There is a method to the madness!

Hello and happy Caturday! I feel like Smokey the Bear saying “Only you can prevent forest fires” in this picture. I was taking pics of makeup and listening to Taylor Swift and… Well, you can guess how that went. I almost deleted the pics, but eh, life is short. If you can dance and laugh at yourself, you must not be doing *everything* completely wrong, ha ha! ?

On the VIP subject of nails, I finally painted mine yesterday afternoon while Connor was napping. This is two coats of Sally Hansen Mega Strength in She-Ro. Let’s hope it lives up to its name.

Oh, and please excuse the somewhat haphazardly done edges. I was too lazy to remove my contacts or look for my cheaters, so I couldn’t really see what I was doing. (Side note: If you ever want to challenge yourself, try painting your nails when you’re practically blind.)

On that note, now would be a really great time to 1) catch up on your weekly beauty reading, and 2) paint your nails! ?

  • If you drive a Subaru ? and wear perfume (or wash your hair with shampoo, use fabric softener, or wear nail polish or makeup), FYI, you may want to take your car in for a checkup, ASAP. Apparently, Subaru is recalling some vehicles because of chemical compounds emitted from common consumer products that are messing with brake light switches and rendering them useless.

A Few Quick Things…

March 8th, 2019 by Karen 12 Comments

Happy Friday!

First of all, happy International Women’s Day from me and the Coywolf! Here are a few inspiring stories of women making a difference in our world today.

Much less interestingly, all of the awesome Revlon black hair elastics I started using a while back have disappeared into the mysterious black hole located inside my house, so I went to Target to replace them and found these…

Seriously so massive!

SERIOUSLY! They’re huge. I don’t know if they’ll be able to handle my mane, but we shall see. Side note: I wonder what Jason Momoa thinks of them, ha ha ha!

Lastly, I desperately need to paint my nails! Having my nails done always makes me feel like I’ve got my sh*t together and makes the world around me seem less chaotic. (Am I the only one?) Gonna try out this new brand by Sally Hansen called Mega Strength.

How are you (and your nails) doing on this beautiful Friday? What’s new?

The MAC Boom Boom Bloom Collection Offers a Bouquet of Proper Petal Pinks

March 7th, 2019 by Karen 9 Comments

Boom Boom Bloom!

Quick take: This limited edition spring launch has lots of lovely wearable pinks for your eyes, cheeks and lips. Definitely grab ye a bottle of the Cherry Blossom Fix+ if you’re already in the Fix+ fam. And if you like wearable makeup like I do, check out the eye palette, the pink cheek powder, Tsk Tsk Lipstick and Heartmelter Lipglass.

[PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT] The first time you spritz the new $28 Cherry Blossom MAC Fix+ on yourself, you are strongly advised to sequester yourself somewhere where you can be obnoxious in private, because you are very likely to become so enamored with the scent (it really does smell like cherry blossoms!) that you’ll want to spray it everywhere — on your face, in your hair, all over your body, under your ‘pits (true story)… Perhaps even on the closest available toddler.

I may or may not have enveloped my entire person in a nimbus cloud of the stuff when I got out of the shower last night. *shrugs* Needless to say, I’m going through this gorgeous bottle very fast, and I am tempted to hoard a backup or two (but I’m not going to, I swear).

I’m a MAC NC42.

Cherry Blossom Fix+ is just one of the springy surprises in the flower-fueled MAC Boom Boom Bloom collection available now. The most striking thing about it — beyond all of the pink, ERMAHGOSH! — is the elegant, upscale LE white packaging, complete with pink petal cherry blossoms. (Extra points for the light pink metal on the inside of the lipstick tubes!) I think it looks almost like something Shu Uemura would do.

Lips: Wagasa Twirl. Skin: Studio Fix Fluid in NC42 mixed with Strobe Cream in Pinklite set with MSF in Golden Tan, with a light spray of Cherry Blossom Fix+.

“Pink” is the theme, but don’t expect Easter egg pastels.

Well…there is a little of that happening in a few of the lipsticks and the glosses, but in the nine-pan eyeshadow palette and the cheek powders (which are technically highlighters but can double as blushes), the pink is more of whisper or suggestion.

Makeup Experiments: Trying “Just One Thing”

March 7th, 2019 by Karen 20 Comments

Only wearing one piece of makeup —> Wander Beauty Mascara in Mile High Club

The other day I asked you what makeup you’d pick to wear if you could only wear “just one thing.” I picked mascara, mostly because I had a hunch that for me it would make the overall biggest impact on my look and give the most bang for my buck, since it has the whole eye-widening effect thang.

I’ve been thinking about my answer since then, though… I’ve been wondering what it would really look like to wear just one piece of makeup, because really, when does one ever wear “just one piece of makeup?” It’s usually all or nothing for me, but still…what would it look like? Would it look like I forgot to do a few steps before leaving the house? Like something is missing?

I decided to do a quick test! In each of these shots, I’m only wearing one piece of makeup.

First up, two coats of mascara (the top pic) and nothing else. I would definitely feel comfortable wearing just mascara because it doesn’t feel like anything is “missing” to me.

Next up, concealer.

Yup, just concealer. Nothing else!

I’m wearing it here underneath my eyes, around my nose and on my cheeks, and while I like that my skin looks more even, I feel like I look like I forgot to put on lipstick and blush, ha ha! Maybe that’s because the concealer seems almost too polished? Hmmm… Interesting!

And how about brows?

nars atacama
NARS Brow Pencil in Atacama

OK, I don’t mind this. I think that filling in your brows can have a similar effect to using mascara in that it opens up the eyes a bit… Who’d a thunk it? I also like how balanced things look with just my brows done.

I think the trick here, though, is to pull back a little, because if I’d done a super strong brow, all you’d see is BROWS BROWS BROWS.

Product Spotlight: Wander Beauty Mile High Club Mascara

March 6th, 2019 by Karen 13 Comments

For crazy curl!

Quick take: This marvelously easy-to-use mascara lengthens, lifts and holds a curl almost all the way up to the stratosphere. It’s also practically waterproof (even though it isn’t alleged to be).

Wander Beauty just gets me, man. It’s like they have a camera into my soul! They know that I usually only have 10 minutes a day to do my makeup, so every nanosecond of that 10 minutes counts, and every moment is so precious and beloved and luxurious to me that I’ve become obnoxiously picky about the products I use. I literally have no more time for nonsense.

The days when I would bust out three different mascaras to do a single look are long gone. Now I’m all about one tube — ONE TUBE TO RULE THEM ALL! — and that’s what I’ve found with Wander Beauty’s New Mile High Club Mascara ($26).

It has since replaced the It Cosmetics Super Hero Mascara I was loving on for a minute, and the reason is because it isn’t finicky at all. Like, I can just pull it out of the tube, plop it on, and I get even better results that I get from Superhero — lighter-than-air lift, longer lashes and darker, richer pigment — all without having to deal with any drama.

My lashes also look fuller, since Mile High combs each hair out so precisely that it looks like I have more lashes than I actually do. Two coats, and they’re full and fanned.

Product Spotlight: Clinique Redness Solutions Soothing Cleanser

March 6th, 2019 by Karen 9 Comments

clinique redness solutions cleanser
And my skin goes “AHHHH!”

Quick take: Here’s a hidden Clinique gem for anyone with red, irritated skin, or for anyone who simply loves creamy, moisturizing cleansers.

Ugh. Red patches.

So not fun! I started using a retinol product about three months ago, which has also meant that my skin freaks out every so often and the aggressive exfoliation triggers these red patches to appear. And MAN, those spots hurt like a mutha.

Yesterday I took a walk around the neighborhood, and the red spots on my neck were so itchy and sensitive that I couldn’t even zip up my hoodie all the way. The fabric rubbing against my neck felt like straight-up FIRE on my skin.

clinique redness solutions

Thank the beauty gods for Clinique Redness Solutions Soothing Cleanser, which is one of those cleansers that’ll have your skin sighing with relief — AHHH! — after you wash your face.

It’s from the Clinique Redness Solutions line, which is their calming and soothing skin care collection for people with Rosacea or “reactive redness,” which is when an event, like a sunburn, or certain medications or retinol, in my case, causes your skin to become red and inflamed.

From clinique.com…

Details:
For any skin with occasional or persistent redness.

What It Is:
Non-drying cream cleanser is the first step in our Redness Solutions Regimen. Use the entire regimen to see an immediate improvement in visible redness.

What It Does:
Melts away makeup and impurities. Helps calm redness and irritation while preserving skin’s moisture balance.

Key Ingredients/Technology:
Probiotic Technology includes our patented, skin-soothing lactobacillus extract.

Ingredients:
Water\Aqua\Eau, Cyclopentasiloxane, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Cetearyl Alcohol, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Sucrose, Isostearyl Palmitate, Peg-100 Stearate, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Polygonum Cuspidatum Root Extract, Hordeum Vulgare (Barley) Extract\Extrait D’Orge, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Extract, Cetearyl Glucoside, Camellia Sinensis (Yellow Tea) Leaf Extract, Aspalathus Linearis (Red Tea) Leaf Extract Saccharomyces Lysate Extract, Ascophyllum Nodosum Extract, Asparagopsis Armata Extract, Camellia Sinensis (White Tea) Leaf Extract, Yeast Extract\Faex\Extrait De Levure, Algae Extract, Caffeine, Lactobacillus Ferment, Sodium Lauroyl Oat Amino Acids, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Polyethylene, Glyceryl Stearate, Salicylic Acid, Sorbitol, Methyl Glucose Sesquistearate, Cholesterol, Linoleic Acid, Acetyl Carnitine Hcl, Glycine, Inulin, Tromethamine, Decarboxy Carnosine Hcl, Phytosphingosine, Cetyl Alcohol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Bisabolol, Squalane, Hdi/Trimethylol Hexyllactone Crosspolymer, Behenyl Alcohol, Carbomer, Silica, Disodium Edta, Potassium Sorbate, Phenoxyethanol, Blue 1 (Ci 42090), Yellow 5 (Ci 19140), Chromium Hydroxide Green (Ci 77289), Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891), Mica

It’s a gentle moisturizing cream cleanser, so no bubbles, and the moment that it hits my skin, my face and neck immediately feel better…less itchy and tight, and just generally less angry. The smoothing “ahh!” effect lasts for hours afterwards, too, which I love.

If you wear minimal makeup, Redness Solutions can also double as a makeup remover, but if you’re a “foundation, concealer and setting powder” kinda girl (or guy), I’d suggest using a separate makeup remover first (I like Fresh Seaberry), and then doing a second cleanse with Redness Solutions.

But even if you don’t have redness, and perhaps just have sensitive skin and/or you prefer gentle, creamy cleansers, I still think you’ll like this, just because it’s so, so agreeable.

Three Revolutions Around the Sun

March 5th, 2019 by Karen 30 Comments

cocobaby birthday ballerina serious

The Coywolf turned three on Saturday, and I’m still processing the fact that she’s a full-on toddler.

Mind you, I know she’s technically been a toddler for a while, but El Hub and I still call her “Babytime” because… Well, no reason. That’s just what we do.

I was looking at old pictures of her this morning, and every single year those chubby little cheeks and baby features seem to get further and further away…

cocobaby birthday ballerina toe point

It’s a joy to watch children get older, but every birthday breaks my heart a little because the older and bigger she gets, the closer she gets to leaving the nest, which, I know, kids eventually do. I did it. Everybody does it. I just don’t know if my heart will ever be strong enough to let her go, you know?

cocobaby birthday ballerina smile

Now that she’s three — man! — she’s so much fun. It’s really cool to see her personality blossoming. She’s generally a very cheerful and sweet little girl (I can’t believe I just called her a little girl), and she can be shy sometimes around new people, but after she warms up, she’ll happily offer hugs and kisses. She also likes to call the shots, HA HA! I’ve definitely seen her bossing around her peers, a.k.a. “practicing her leadership/future CEO skills.”

She also has a really funny sense of humor and an excellent ear for music. When she sings, it’s always on key, and when I’ve seen her in dance class with rhythm sticks, she’s on the beat, which funnily enough made my brother, who’s a musician, cry tears of joy (he was deathly afraid she’d have no rhythm, for some reason). Right now she loves ballet, Taylor Swift, nursery rhymes, playing soccer and drawing. And her favorite book is Madeline.

If You Could Only Use One Piece of Makeup Today, What Would It Be?

March 5th, 2019 by Karen 23 Comments

mac work it out mascara
Mascara FTW

Deep thoughts… If you could only use one piece of makeup today, what would it be? (And it has to be something real. Magical fairy dust doesn’t count.)

Once upon a time, I would’ve said “under-eye concealer!” because for years I believed that my dark circle situation rivaled Uncle Fester’s, but they aren’t that big of a deal for me anymore… (Looking back, I think I may have been making a mountain out of a molehill, but that’s a story for a different day.)

Now, I’d go with mascara — Wander Beauty Mile High Mascara to be exact.

A lash curl and length boost is makeup magic for my slightly hooded lids, because when my lashes are lifted and point up instead of down, my eyes look less droopy, and my eye sockets look deeper.

I think mascara even makes more of an impact than eyeliner or even eyeshadow.

And if I couldn’t pick a mascara for any reason (BOO), I’d opt for a pinkish nude matte lipstick that I could also use as a blush (and possibly even an impromptu eyeshadow).

How about you? If you could only use one piece of makeup today, what would it be?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen
