Crazy About Creams! Say Hi to MAC Pro Face Palette Blush

January 23rd, 2019 by Karen 19 Comments

Oh, ya know, just some Casual Colour with the $40 MAC Pro Face Palette: Bright Blush.

This month I am CRAZY ABOUT CREAMS. Stay tuned for some of my favorite cream makeup products all throughout January.

I know I’ve mentioned the MAC Casual Colours before. They’re brilliant. They’re creamy. They’ve popped up in limited collections before (Beth Ditto, Mia Moretti and Diane Kendall, to name a few). You can wear them on your cheeks and lips, and now MAC has them in three options — Bright Blush, Deep Blush and Light Blush.

To this, all I have to say is YES.

MAC Pro Face Palette: Deep Blush ($40)

Well, obvs, that’s not all I have to say, ha! 🙂 Hello, my name is Karen, and my ability to get straight to the point is questionable.

I will also say this: If you’re a makeup lover who likes fresh, shiny cheeks and plump, juicy lips, you’ll probably appreciate Casual Color’s semi-glossy finish and creamy texture.

These palettes are a go-to when I’m wearing a sheer base (bare skin, BB or CC cream, or a tinted moisturizer), because the semi-glossy finish goes well with minimal coverage.

The trick is to gently tap-tap-tap the tiniest amount (either with your fingers or a stippling brush) you can get away with because these creams are very concentrated. You only need the most minimal of minimal amounts.

Once you figure out how little you can get away with, you’ll be rewarded with surprisingly good wear time. I get about five hours on my cheeks and three on my lips.

Product Spotlight: Oribe Free Styler Flexible Hold Working Hairspray

January 22nd, 2019 by Karen 12 Comments

oribe gold lust dry shampoo

I don’t love cowlicks, but cowlicks love me. [Insert crying-face emojis right here ???.] My cowlick situation was almost mildly tolerable before I started growing out my grays, but now it’s next level orange alert!!!

It’s the texture of the gray hairs, man. They’re wirier than my non-gray hairs, and the short, stubby pieces stick out, especially the hairs right smack dab in the middle of my hairline and in the center of my part.

If I leave them be, I look like I’m being mildly electrocuted… Hence Oribe Free Styler Working Hairspray.

Expensive as it is [$42 for a 9-oz. bottle, OMG!], I love this stuff. I’ve been into it ever since I sprayed about half a can on my bangs for the victory rolls I did for Halloween. The rolls stayed put and weren’t crunchy, and you know me when it comes to crunchy hair (not a fan). When I took my hair down that night before bed, even after ALL that hairspray, I was able to run a brush through it without any flakes or tugging.

Which is rad.

What takes this stuff from “nice” to “must-have” for me is how well it handles crazy cowlicks and those stubs of wayward gray hair. It tames them easily, and I use it daily now as part of my routine. I like that my hair can still move around with it and doesn’t look lacquered into place like a helmet.

It freezes your hair in place but doesn’t make it stiff. Your hair also won’t look too shiny and “done,” thanks to the satin finish, which I also like.

Here’s how I work it: When I’m done curling or braiding or whatever I’m doing on any given day, I almost always have a crown or crazy cowlicks sticking out along my hairline and in my part, so I spray a fine layer of Free Styler directly on top, then finesse them down with a fine-toothed comb from Sally Beauty.

If there are any wayward bits left standing, I’ll repeat the process until I’ve coaxed everything into place.

Crazy About Creams! Revlon Illuminance Creme Shadow in Not Just Nudes

January 22nd, 2019 by Karen 19 Comments

Revlon Not Just Nudes

This month I am CRAZY ABOUT CREAMS. Stay tuned for some of my favorite cream makeup products all throughout January.

First of all, I’m shocked I haven’t already tried this Revelon palette, since I’m such a fan of their individual cream shadows in the pots (Chocolate or Espresso, anyone?!). I have to thank the trauma of my last visit to the dentist for this spur-of-the-moment retail therapy purchase!

Illuminance Creme Shadow in Not Just Nudes ($7.99) comes in a slim, trim plastic package with a mirror on one side and four neutral cream shadows on the other. It’s a lineup of coordinating colors with a glossy finish to illuminate yo’ lids.

You know that high fashion/editorial glossy lid look? This does that, but without the thickness, heaviness or major creasing (I do see some minor creasing after a few hours, but not a lot).

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 560

January 21st, 2019 by Karen 21 Comments

Have a colorful day!

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start. ?

1. Your thoughts on colorful eyeliner?

Love it. Love wearing it. I do tend to gravitate toward darker jewel tones like green, navy, purple and the occasional burgundy, rather than more adventurous “out there” colors like true red, lime green or neon yellow… Way back in my yonder days, I used to love a shot of bright teal on my upper lash line, but the last few times I tried it (and this might all be in my head), I felt like it looked…like I was trying too hard.

2. Warm reds or cool reds?

Cool reds please! The ones that border on fuchsia.

3. Are you able to now (or have you ever been able to) do a backflip?

Oh, hell no.

4. Is face powder/setting powder a non-negotiable for you?

It was for me in my 20s, a.k.a. back in my oily skin days, but I try to skip it when I can now. If you can get away without it, I say skip it or use the absolute least amount.

One less thing to do…

5. Something you recently learned that you like?

I don’t mind kale chips…as long as someone else makes them. When I make them at home, though? Two words: soggy leaves.

Colorful liner week?

Hi, friend. ? Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

OK, can we talk hair for a sec? — because I’m looking at myself in the mirror now, and all I see are half a dozen scraggly gray hairs sticking straight up at crazy angles, and I think I need some help getting through this part of the growing-out-the-gray process…

I’ve heard that everyone who grows out their grays hits a point when they think their hair looks completely ? bananas for a while, and I’m officially at that point.

Ugh…

I’ve reached the multiple ??? bananas point… I cried about it half the day yesterday.

I know, I know, it’s just hair, but this is a big change for me, and I’m struggling with it, because right now when I look in the mirror, I don’t feel like I’m seeing myself.

Lying awake in bed last night, I kept reminding myself that it’s just a phase. How can I can get through it gracefully? Then it occurred to me… How about bright pops of color? Some gals who grow out their gray tweak their makeup to go with their new hair, so maybe a colorful liner instead of the neutrals I’ve been wearing the past few months might help? Maybe a green or blue cat liner would distract me from staring at those white hairs.

So that’s my makeup plan. Anyone down to embrace colorful liner with me this week?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Question time! Here they are to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to you soon.

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 537

January 20th, 2019 by Karen 5 Comments

Some cats forget that Tabs wasn’t always just the Chief Feline Officer (CFO) of one of the largest multinational media empires in the greater Novato area. He was also the first kitty supermodel of the modern era.

In fact, he practically invented all of the major cat modeling poses in widespread use today.

He also pioneered kitty couture and cat-themed print modeling in the beauty biz.

And all of that was in his second career. Before becoming a world-renowned kitty supermodel, Tabs also played professional cat football for the Mill Valley Wildcats.

He still holds the record for the most touchdowns by a feline tight end.

The only reason he retired was because of an untimely injury…

Saturday Surfing, January 19th, 2019

January 19th, 2019 by Karen 3 Comments

Morning, friend.

So…movies. I’m at the point in life where it takes me three days to finish watching a movie at home. I’ll watch them in bite-sized chunks on my couch, a few minutes here and there between loads of laundry and making dinner.

Last night I finished a good one called Eighth Grade, and it only took me two days! Could this be progress?? Maybe by summer I’ll be back to actually finishing a movie in a day, ha ha!

But I digress…

I liked this one a lot. It’s fictional, but it’s very true to what I remember being an eighth grader was like. The main character, Kayla, perfectly captures the awkwardness and hopefulness I remember feeling throughout middle school.

Those years were rough, man! And can I just say bravo to the filmmakers for featuring a main character with acne and eighth graders who actually look and act like eighth graders? Even though the movie is set in 2017, it still captures how I remember feeling back then. All the memories came flooding back! — the feeling of being on the edge of something, not quite a child but not yet a teenager either.

Give it a shot if you have some time this weekend. I found it on Amazon Prime.

But before you press ‘play,’ your weekend reading…

  • See, this is why I never accept drinks from strangers, even at fancy spas. You could walk out with a $22k bill, OMG!
  • Fave read of the week: Washington DC-based makeup artist Carl Ray does makeup for some of the most influential women in politics.
  • How Hollywood artists transformed the hair and makeup for some of the stars (including Christian Bale) of the biggest movies last year.
  • The history of leggings…
  • And how they became the most controversial members of the pants family.
  • Speaking of leggings, these black leggings allegedly rock, AND they’re supposed to look like real pants. Um…sign me up?
  • How the 10-step Korean skin care routine changed American skin care.
  • The Fenty effect is a real thing, and now it’s happening in skin care.
  • Peep these skin care innovations of tomorrow, including a wand that supposedly removes dark spots right before your eyes.

What happens when you Konmari a massive makeup collection…

Because I’m listening to Lizzo 24/7 right now

And because I still secretly believe Keanu and I will be married someday

Yes, THAT Keanu.

Oh, yeah, one more thing about that movie (Eighth Grade)… I’m no longer allowed to use young people slang, because I had to google “Why do kids say Gucci?” HA HA! I’m officially one step closer to retreating to the tomb in my pyramid with all of my cats and worldly belongings.

Have a good one!

Karen

Fresh Friday: Blending Feels Good With the Super Soft Bristles in This New Cruelty-Free Vegan Makeup Brush Line

January 18th, 2019 by Karen 7 Comments

adesign makeup brushes 1

MBB’s “Fresh Friday” series takes a look at new beauty brands (and venerable O.G. brands that are new to me). Let’s discover new makeup!

One of the issue I’ve had with some synthetic makeup brushes is how stiff their bristles are, but that is not a prob for the brushes I’ve tried from aDesign, a new makeup brush line exclusive to Amazon. The angled buffing brush, for one, is so soft that it feels like you’re getting kitten kisses. Sometimes I’ll sit at my desk just rubbing it all over my face. If soft is what you want, soft is what you’ll get with these cruelty-free vegan brushes.

adesign makeup brushes 2

The line is the beauty brainchild of Anisa Telwar Kaicker of Anisa International (Forbes recently gave them a shout-out as one of the best small companies of 2018). Incidentally, Anisa makes brushes for some of the biggest beauty brands out there (Estée Lauder, NARS, Sephora, MAC, Hourglas, La mer and Laura Mercier, to name a few), so I guess it’s safe to say they know brushes.

The new aDesign line has 30 brushes, which are sold in sets of two brushes each. The sets range from $14 on the lower end (for a pair of eye brushes, which breaks down to $7 a brush = not bad!) to $34 on the higher end (for two face brushes). The brushes are lightweight with medium-length handles, and they feel a lot like It Cosmetics brushes in my hand.

How do you choose which set to get? Well, they’re categorized by function. For example, the Eye Power Duo ($14) is all about smoky eyes and comes with two eye brushes for applying and blending cream or powder shadows for smoky looks.

What Kind of Makeup Looks Are You Into at the Moment?

January 17th, 2019 by Karen 25 Comments

becca apres ski glow face palette k
Mine’s a very BECCA look.

I’m always curious to hear what you’re into ’cause I’m a nosy noodle like that. Myself, I’m in a bronzed lid/nude lip phase, which I know is more of a summertime ensemble, and it’s midwinter and pouring buckets here, but I’m rolling with it. Might as well let it work its way through my system. ?

Before this, I went through a taupe eyeshadow phase, and before that I was all about warm reds and oranges.

How ’bout you? What kind of makeup looks are you into at the moment?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen
