navy cat dress target

Good morning, meow mix! Do you ever have temporary bouts of cat clothing-related insanity? I’m going to venture a guess now that this does not come as a shock, but I do, and mine routinely occur at Target.

I was there the other day when I saw this children’s dress… Or is it a tunic top? I’m not exactly sure what it is, TBH! It was on a rack. When I saw it, I paused and thought, “Hmm… If I can find it in an XL, I bet I could wear it as a t-shirt!”

LOL. Then I came to my senses… Can ya blame me, though? That cat is super cute! ?

Oh, and I also saw this interesting mint green coat that reminds me of the bathroom rug my parents had in the ’80s, ha ha!

target muppet coat

I kinda wanted to get it, but I held back because I already own enough clothing that makes me look like a Muppet…

On that note, let’s get to this weekend’s reading.

  • In case you were wondering what to do if your cat is peeing on your boyfriend’s laundry…
  • Up until recently, the scientific community mostly ignored the bio-mechanics of cat grooming, but researchers recently discovered that the spiny bumps on cat tongues, which are known as papillae, are actually curved backward toward the throat, and they’re now applying this knowledge of cat tongues to the development of cutting-edge technology for hoomans.
  • Netflix has a new drama coming out called Perfume, and it isn’t about the dark goings-on at a haunted fragrance counter… In it, a criminal profiler investigates a series of murders that trace back to a group of boarding school students who once experimented with psychologically manipulating people using scents.
  • Even the Queen loves Charlotte Tilbury!
  • What does “clean beauty” even mean? There isn’t a clear-cut definition here in the U.S., and the marketing can be hella confusing.

This post talks about common chemicals used in cosmetics (including parabens and phthalates), and what different camps of people within the beauty world think of them.

  • Good to know —> Google is working on motorized shoes ? for virtual reality.
  • This baby sloth loves eyebrows! (Side note: I wonder what he or she thinks about Instagram brows.)
  • This photo moved me to tears.
  • A dermatologist’s guide to layering your skin-care products.
  • Things to keep in mind if you’re a darker diva and you’re thinking about microblading your brows.
  • In case you haven’t noticed, teen heartthrob hair is having a may-jah moment.

One of my faves

On my “good morning” playlist at the moment

Why yes, I’m on a ’90s music kick!

All I want for Christmas are Lisa’s lipsticks, LOL.

If you’re that one awkward mom at the birthday party, a.k.a. me

Have a great rest of your weekend. Stay dry.

Skin Care Rave! Fresh Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil

November 23rd, 2018 by Karen 10 Comments

fresh seaberry moisurizing face oil
LOVE IT!

So. Effing. Good.

Last month, while battling a nasty cold, I came to the conclusion that Fresh Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil really does live up to the hype (4.5 stars with more than ONE THOUSAND reviews on sephora.com).

You know when you’re blowing your nose so often that the skin around your nostrils gets rubbed raw, and it’s dry, and it hurts? Mine gets so sensitive to the touch that even splashing water on my face hurts.

My usual heavyduty face moisturizers weren’t doing the job done, so, out of desperation (and perhaps loopy from the cold meds), I tracked this down, busted it open, and patted about a half a dropper of the oil on the skin around my nose, nostrils and mouth.

AHHHH! Instant relief. Seaberry Oil BRINGS IT big time in the moisture department.

“Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil is a precious blend of pure oils—seaberry, cranberry seed, camellia seed, grapeseed, and sweet almond—packed with nourishing omegas to preserve a youthful appearance. The lightweight formula absorbs quickly for a boost of vital moisture.”

— sephora.com

Highlighted ingredients:

  • Seaberry Oil: A powerful antioxidant rich in moisturizing omegas 3, 6, 7, and 9 noted for protecting the skin from aging free radicals.
  • Cranberry Seed Oil: Maintains the skin’s elasticity and smoothness.
  • Camellia Seed Oil: Helps to retain moisture and promote smooth, supple skin.

Ingredients:
Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Camellia Oleifera Seed Oil, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Hippophae Rhamnoides Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Vaccinium Macrocarpon (Cranberry) Seed Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate, Tocopherol, Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate, Fragrance, Bht, Linalool, Limonene, Citral, Coumarin, Geraniol

It’s rich in antioxidants and omegas, and made for normal, dry and sensitive skin types, so peeps across the land can use it! — even if you have oily skin. I saw more than a few reviews from people with oily skin raving about it on the Sephora website.

Now it’s an everyday part of my routine. Every morning and night after I wash my face, I work about three big drops using the included dropper onto my skin while it’s damp. Sometimes I’ll also mix one or two drops into my trusty Clarins Hydra-Essentiel Silky Cream as well, which is another great combo IMO.

It’s $52 for a 1.6-oz. bottle, which is a pretty good size. I think it’s enough to last a long while.

Happy Thanksgiving

November 22nd, 2018 by Karen 33 Comments

happy thanksgiving 2018 final

Happy Thanksgiving, sweet friend. Let me be the cheeseball/ball of cheese that I am for a second, OK? I’m here to remind you 1) that you are ❤️ loved, 2) you are capable, and 3) you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be in life, even if you don’t feel like you’re quite “there” (wherever that “there” is) yet in your journey. I’m thankful every day that we’ve somehow, through the magic of the interwebz, gotten to know each other.

Like a lot of women, I crave connection. Need it. Thrive on it. Feeling like I’m part of a tribe makes life feel a little less…well, tedious. Like I don’t have to go it all alone.

I’ve been thinking a lot about this line I heard recently in a horror show I watched on Netflix called The Haunting of Hill House (of all things!), where one of the characters talks about preparing children for the dangers of “the real world,” and what she says stuck with me. “It [the real world] has teeth. It is hungry, and it is stupid, and it eats and eats mindlessly.”

Sometimes, I feel like I’m being chewed up and consumed by all of the adulting I have to do all the time — bills, work, the drudgery of everyday things like vacuuming the couch and cleaning the bathroom. How do you get through it all without feeling like you’re stuck on a hamster wheel? How do you feel less lonely?

Answer: You find friends where you can, and you hold onto them. Tight. And that’s what I cherish most and am thankful for the most here at MBB — all of the friendships I’ve made along the way (since 2007!). Without you gals, I’d be outta my frickin’ mind by now. Really. Granted, that may sound a little dramatic (what, me dramatic? NO WAY!), but if life had taken a different turn and I were doing something else instead, like teaching underwater basket weaving to tourists on a remote island, I know that I’d probably be fine…but there would most definitely be a hole in my heart. An emptiness. There would be something missing.

I am so, so thankful that we found each other in this little corner of the world. I’m grateful to you for your thoughtfulness, your compassion, your wit and your joie de vivre, and I’m happy to say that I’m one of the lucky women who has a tribe of girlfriends to turn to.

Thank you for being a friend, and yes, I just quoted The Golden Girls! ? Thank you for having my back, because I’ll always have yours.

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Eat an extra helping of mashed potatoes for me, will ya?

With lots of love, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

9 Rad Reasons to Raid the Trader Joe’s Holiday Gift Section Right Meow

November 21st, 2018 by Karen 12 Comments

SO GOOD

It’s that time of year again! — that time when you go into Trader Joe’s intending to only get a loaf of gluten-free sliced bread (El Hub highly recommends the one in the green bag. He says the one in the pink bag tastes like sawdust.) and leave with a cart filled with snacks and holiday gifts “allegedly” for other people, but really they’re just for you.

1. Ginger Ultra Moisturizing Hand Cream ($4.99)

trader joes ginger ultra moisturzing hand cream
It took every ounce of my willpower to not put all of these in my basket…

This is SO GOOD. I bought three tubes because #hoarders, and I’m going back for more. It smells exactly like Origins Ginger Souffle Lotion. If you’re unsure about ginger scents, ask someone who works at TJ’s if they can open a tube so you can test it out first! That’s what I did, and the sales clerk mentioned that he ended up getting one for himself, each of his aunties, his sisters and his mom.

Good man!

2. Lip Treatment Duo ($3.99)

trader joes lip treatment duo
Be gone, dry lips!

A lady I was chatting up in the beauty section said that she bought this duo last year, and she 100% recommended it if you have dry lips.

3. Gingerbread Scented Candle ($3.99)

Smells good enough to eat (but you shouldn’t because it’s just a candle)

Another recommendation from my homegirl in the beauty section. It smells just like a gingersnap!

What a steal!

4. Macaron Soap ($4.99)

Looks good enough to eat? (But you shouldn’t because it’s soap.)

How cute are these little soaps? You might have to tell anyone who uses your bathroom not to eat them though!

5. Face Mask Trio ($6.99)

Different masks for different needs

I’m so intrigued by the Rose Gel Mask! Pro tip/hack: If you see something in a gift set that you wanna keep for yourself, just break up the set and give away the things you don’t want as stocking-stuffers. 😉

6. Exfoliating Body Scrub Trio ($7.99)

Scrub-a-dub-dub

I have a full-sized exfoliating body scrub from TJ’s that I love, and I bet these minis in different scents are just as great.

7. Handwoven Recycled Newspaper Baskets ($5.99)

Snazzy organizers

Each basket looks different, and they feel sturdy, too.

I Just Found Out Spanx Makes Leggings, and I Am Shooketh

November 21st, 2018 by Karen 16 Comments

spanx leggings stripe
The universe has sent me a sign.

Leave it to the universe to have impeccable timing, because it just reminded of a commitment I made to myself years ago about Turkey Day — that I would never again wear pants with buttons that constrain me in any form or fashion upon the date of a major mega-food fest!

All those years of wearing bullsh*t jeans to Thanksgiving meals… NEVER AGAIN.

Which leads me to my latest aha! find: Spanx leggings. Girlfriend, I AM SHOOKETH.

This knowledge was dropped on me, an unsuspecting woman with a closet filled with raggedy “private stretchy pants”, last Sunday at a meeting of the Novato Mothers Club.

It was held at a Nordstrom. The store sectioned off some of the dressing rooms for the moms, and provided drinks, snacks and stylists.

One of the stylists brought out a selection of Spanx leggings and subsequently raved about them. I kid you not, the leggings looked amazing on everyone — like J. Lo booty, outta-this-world amaze-balls.

More than half the women left with a pair.

I’d wear that furry top thing in a heartbeat because I love anything that makes me look like a Muppet.

CUTE

OK, first things first: These are NOT workout leggings (although Spanx makes some of those, too). This line is for everyday life. These are thick, high-waisted stretchy pants that suck in your gut, smooth out cellulite, slim your quads and lift your butt to the next level. A couple of the styles also come in petite sizes.

The stylist recommended wearing a long sweater or a tunic with the leggings if you don’t want your booty showing, which is probably what I’d do for some of the styles, like the Faux Leather, the Moto (SUPER CUTE) and the camo.

They’re even cuter in person.

Oh, and don’t reflexively dismiss the camo. I wanted to hate on it at first because camo isn’t my thing, but one of the moms actually showed up to the event wearing the gray camo pair with black booties, a loose camel sweater tunic and a few layered gold necklaces, and she looked super chic. Equal parts edgy and elegant.

Nordstrom didn’t have any of the jeans-looking leggings in stock, but those look very tempting, too.

And this pair with sequins! WANT. You know me, though. Any excuse for bling.

Ah, LOVE!

Makeup of the Day // Shades of Blue Liner

November 20th, 2018 by Karen 17 Comments

Feeling blue

I got the idea for this metallic blue eyeliner look from a look Kristin Stewart wore to Cannes earlier this year, and I’ve been wanting to wear it ever since. Obviously, I’m no Beau Nelson (I WISH), but I tried.

#kristenstewart in Cannes hair by @bridgetbragerhair styling @taraswennen makeup and Photo by me @beau_nelson #beaunelsonstudio

A post shared by Beau Nelson (@beau_nelson) on May 10, 2018 at 12:31pm PDT

There are so many things I love about this makeup look, but the main things are 1) how vibrant and metallic the liner is, and 2) how the liner morphs from bright metallic teal in the inner corner, to green in the middle (it isn’t obvious, but it’s there, methinks) and a dark blue in the corner, and that’s just along the upper lash line! The lower lash line has these small, subtle blocks of dark blue interspersed with teal… It’s colorful but not cray-cray.

I would totally wear this out to run errands. In fact, I did, out to get groceries, and I almost said “WASSSSUP” to the older woman who straight-up stared at me in the bread aisle as if I were a visitor from another planet.

Some thoughts on the key products

The most complicated thing in this look is the liner, but you can make it as easy or as complicated as you want. If you want to go a simpler route, you can use a couple of bright metallic blue pencils and a black liner on your water line, but I did a combination of eyeliner, cream shadow and powder shadow… Basically, I was in the mood to play. 🙂

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Electric: A metallic teal with silver glitter, available in the permanent line. It’s super bright and intense, but don’t get it anywhere close to your water line because your eyes will tear up if they’re sensitive.

Chanel Stylo Ombre Et Contour in Contour Graphique ($34): I used this dark matte navy as a base for the darker blue parts of the liner. It’s creamy, smudgy and intensely pigmented. It also takes about 5 minutes to fully dry down, so you’ll have lots of time to play with it.

Chanel Splendeur et Audace Quad ($61): I layered the black and blue shades on top of the dark matte navy liner. It’s shiny but less intensely metallic than similar shadows from Urban Decay and MAC… Eh, it’s alright.

Current Positivity Playlist

November 20th, 2018 by Karen 12 Comments

only love today
One of the notes I’ve been writing to myself. The liner is Urban Decay Glide-On in Abyss, which is bulletproof!

I might sound like a broken record…especially when I say, “I might sound like a broken record,” which is a phrase I know I use all the time, but I think it’s important to be open about taking care of one’s mental health. I know the holidays can be a stressful time, so here are a few things on my “Positivity Playlist” at the moment, in case you need a little help this week.

Time for some Electricity on repeat…

I’ve discussed some of this before, but when I was going to therapy a couple years ago (just needed someone to talk to about work, life, self-doubt, motherhood, loneliness, aging), one of the things my therapist and I talked about was conscientiously trying to see the proverbial glass as half full, rather than half empty, and how it can take a LOT of work sometimes to see the world in a positive light.

I still think about this all the time because, depending and on how I’m feeling, it’s either really easy for me to feel positive and grateful for the things I have in my life (even though it’s far from perfect), or it’s really hard, let’s be honest. Some days I feel like everything’s a sh*t show, and I can’t handle it.

One of the most helpful techniques I’ve come across for me has been actively recognizing that when I feel that “life is a sh*t show” feeling coming on, I openly acknowledging it to myself.

You know how you can smell the rain coming before it happens? It’s a little like that. When I start to feel that feeling creeping up on me, I recognize it, acknowledge it (“Oh, here we go!), and then turn to my positivity toolbox.

Pretty sure I’ve mentioned all of these things before, but here they are again:

  1. I make it a point to do a little extra cardio, whether it’s jogging, walking or doing a workout DVD or YouTube video, because those endorphins really do help me a lot.
  2. I try to get some extra rest by going to bed early.
  3. I leave myself encouraging, positive notes everywhere — Post-its, on mirrors, on my wrists. Side note: The notes are usually written with an Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-on Eye Pencil, LOL!
  4. I listen to songs that make me wanna move my booty and dance around (see below).
  5. I fire up a Ted Talk on positive thinking.

Something here usually makes me feel better. They definitely don’t make me feel worse.

Here’s what’s on my Positivity Playlist right now…

I hope this can help you in some way, too, even if it’s just to get your heart pumping and your body moving.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I May Be Too Vain for This, But I’m Gonna Do It Anyway

November 19th, 2018 by Karen 34 Comments

k gray roots
Here we gooooooo…

You guys, I think I’m ready. I think it’s finally time. I’ve been going back and forth for what feels like forever (but in reality has been about a year and a half, ha ha!) about whether to let my grays grow out, and you know…after this this last round of dying my hair and absolutely hating every second of it, I think I’m going to make the jump. I’m gonna grow out my grays.

We’ll see if I feel the same way in about two months when all of the baby hairs along my hairline are white and there’s that jarring line of demarcation where you can see the the last round of color, but I figure, if I can grow out my eyebrows, I can do anything!

And you know, it’s hair. If I’m not feeling it after I grow it out, I can always dye it back. Plus, it’s been a really, really long time since I rocked my natural hair color — more than 10 years. Shoot, maybe even 15? So it’ll be a nice change to see what my hair actually looks like in its natural state.

Knowing that I don’t plan to dye it again already feels like such a relief. What pushed me over the edge was a comment from Kristy (hey, girl!), who said…

“I’ve gone down the demi-permanent rabbit hole trying to cover grays myself, and I’ve found it to be unsustainable. It doesn’t cover the grays for long – the roots tend to fade, and the lengths just get darker and darker. I have dark hair too, and I found myself coloring almost monthly until it was just too much to take and my hair was the color of shoe polish. I don’t color anymore and I now have silver streaks, free of charge! I mean, people are paying to get gray hair! It’s a statement look for me now and I’ll never color again. I would strongly encourage anyone who is sick of covering gray to go for it. Yes, it sucks for a few months, but no one really cares (just you) and you will come out happier, stronger and more beautiful in the end!”

This got me thinking about seeing my dad’s retired friends hanging out in the neighbor’s garage. There’s always a few guys in the group with hair that just looks a little too dark, and there’s something about it that doesn’t look quite right. If I keep using the demi-permanent hair color I’ve been using, I fear that that’s where I’m headed, and I don’t wanna end up there. That’s my main motivator.
