When You Shop for Beauty Products Online, How Often Do You End Up Buying Extra Items So You Can Get Free Shipping?

August 14th, 2018 by Karen 18 Comments

What I wanna know is this: Is there anyone out there who doesn’t fall for this?! Because if you’re out there…TEACH ME YOUR WAYS. I swear, it doesn’t matter how well I plan out my purchases, it seems like I’m always this shy from qualifying for the free shipping threshold, and you know I’m not about to pay an extra 5-10 dolla-dolla-bills-y’all just to get my haul to my doorstep.

Inevitably, I’ll end up with some nonsense I don’t need but would rather spend the equivalent $$ on to snag that free shipping.

What about you?

Karen

[The Shower Files] Get Fresh Life Body Oil and Body Lotion Into Your Shower Right Meow

August 13th, 2018 by Karen 2 Comments

fresh fresh life body oil
I *just* sniffed my arm, and it smelled absolutely delicious.

Obvs, Fresh is a skin care line, first and foremost, but I have extra gravy-caliber love in my cat lady heart for their fragrances.

Fresh Life is my favorite of them all, but Sugar Lemon runs a close second.

Then Hesperides Grapefruit.

And Sugar Lychee.

Bah, who am I kidding? I love them all…but Fresh Life is the one I wear the most. It’s airy, refreshing, girly and doesn’t get up in your grill. It’s like a lighter cross between Chloe and Byredo Gypsy Water. I think if you like either of those — or if you just love lemony or sugary scents, or grapefruit, or lilac and/or magnolia — you’ll love this too.

I wore the Eau de Parfum through spring and summer, but I just realized that there’s also a bunch of other Fresh Life products, like lotion, oil and soap…

SAY WHA!?

Rock that I’ve been hiding under, meet my beauty bestie. Beauty bestie, meet the rock I’ve been hiding under FOR YEARS.

Dear, Fresh Life Body Lotion ($23 for 10.1 oz.) and Fresh Life Body Oil ($48 for 3.3 oz.), thank you leveling up my after-shower scent game.

WARNING: The bright lemon and toasty brown sugar notes may tempt you or anyone in your immediate vicinity to nibble on your forearm (side note: neither of these are classified as edible). Yes, that sounds Hannibal Lecter-y, but hopefully nobody will cannibalize your limbs.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 537

August 13th, 2018 by Karen 27 Comments

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Good question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past gazillion years (more than 10!). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a great start. ?

1. How good are you about keeping your makeup collection de-cluttered?

Ya know…even before I started blogging, I was terrible at it.

Absolutely awful.

I need someone to hold my hand and talk me out of my crazy next time I sit down to clean up my collection because I hold on to things way too long. I will generally always find a reason to keep something. Forever.

I wish I could be one of those people who mercilessly unloads items they never use. Maybe then I could finally let go of that ancient pan of NARS Amour Blush that I took with me to Europe in 2005. (In case you were wondering, no I don’t use it anymore.)

2. Do you play Fortnite?

Nah, I’ve heard about it many times in passing, and I actually had to Google it to find out what the fuss was about.

My dream idea of gaming is playing Tetris. On a Gameboy. In the ’90s.

3. What’s the last thing you explained to someone?

El Hub asked me, “What’s the deal with Cardi B? Why’s she so popular?” HA HA HA! I may or may not have given him a dissertation on her rise to fame.

4. Jellybeans or chocolate?

Chocolate! ???

5. Cher or Beyoncé?

Bey, although Stevie Nicks trumps everyone, every time.

5+ Bonus question: who’s your team?

The Warriors, baby!

Happy Monday!

Why am I always caught by surprise when I see the pink ladies pop up this time of year?

No, they aren’t a girl gang from Grease. They’re those flowers up at the top. 🙂 They show up in Bay Area every year in late summer and signal that fall is right around the corner.

OK, now, I know that fall is coming, but it’s like my mind refuses to accept that summer will be over soon. 🙁

I have Facebook friends who are already posting pictures of pumpkins and their pets and kids in Halloween costumes, while I’m here knocking on a watermelon and thinking about the pool.

Sigh…

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Question time! Here are they are to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to you soon.

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 514

August 12th, 2018 by Karen 9 Comments

Today the system worked.

All of the planning, the training, the high-intensity napping and the gallons of gravy — all the effort paid off.

Today while Tabs was actually on neighborhood patrol, Harris the Cat attempted to break into the offices of Tabs the Cat Industries LLC.

The following images were pulled from this morning’s CCCTV (Closed Circuit Cat Television) security tapes…

Saturday Surfing, August 11th, 2018

August 11th, 2018 by Karen 9 Comments

Good morning, glory. Happy Caturday. ? We’re getting ready to head to the ?️ beach (because you gotta get there early to grab a spot in the main parking lot, or you end up having to park a mile away and hike up mini Kilimanjaro).

The ? ocean is calling!

But first, some light reading. ?

  • If you don’t know, now you know. The ’80s-style makeup on Netflix’s GLOW is authentic and epic — so epic that the artists have been nominated for an Emmy! To keep the makeup as authentically ’80s as possible, they eschewed modern-day tools like the Beauty Blender. According to GLOW makeup designer Lana Horochowski, “The ’80s were all about severe, harsh lines… I applied the girls’ makeup as if they were applying it themselves really quick for a show,” she explains. “If something was a little wonky, I’d just leave it.”
  • Linda Cantello (widely regarded as the inventor of the smoky eye) is not feeling Instagram makeup.
  • Period parties are an old tradition being revived in many families, and ya know what? I think it’s kinda cool, because why not celebrate this major milestone in a woman’s life as a joyful step into womanhood? I’d rather have it be something positive than something shameful or negative.
  • Charlotte Tilbury’s coming to Sephora…which means that I’ll have one more reason to lose my damn mind at the VIB sale!
  • This was non-beauty related but still interesting and somewhat frightening (to me, at least): There’s a new field of research called “persuasive design” that examines how computers can change the way we act and think. The ideas are built into thousands of games and apps, and companies like Twitter and Facebook rely on persuasive design techniques to encourage people to do things…like spend more time staring at their phones.

    From the article:

“While defenders of persuasive tech will say it can have positive effects, like training people to take medicine on time or develop weight loss habits, some health professionals believe children’s behaviors are being exploited in the name of the tech world’s profit. On Wednesday, a letter signed by 50 psychologists was sent to the American Psychological Association accusing psychologists working at tech companies of using ‘hidden manipulation techniques’ and asks the APA to take an ethical stand on behalf of kids.”

  • I blessed the rains down in Africa! How a teenage fan’s fervent Twitter campaign gave us the magic that is Weezer’s cover of this iconic ’80s Toto song.

What are you up to this weekend?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Easy Everyday Hair Styles for the Dog Days of Summer, Day 4: Friday Fun Buns

August 10th, 2018 by Karen 6 Comments

oribe summer hair buns 7

And for more heat-less hair styles for the dog days of summer, check out…

  • Day 1: The Woven Wonder
  • Day 2: Textured, Tousled Waves
  • Day 3: Wash-and-Wear Wow

OK, I’m sweating behind my knees and between my toes right now… I woke up this morning to second-day air-dried bed-head hair and scorching heat (today’s been in the ’90s, and we don’t have air conditioning), which left me with the following choices for living my best hair life on a blisteringly hot day like today: 1) throw it into a high pony (boring), 2) squirrel it underneath a hat (which is great for sun protection, but man…hats make me sweat so much.), or 3) fun bun it up.

Wanna guess which option I went with?

I feel like buns had a mega moment a few years back with the whole sock bun trend, but I’m still here for them in a major way. It’s an easy hairstyle for a summer Friday because you can look as sleek and done or as messy and undone as ya please! Do a single bun, or double the fun with two. Keep it simple, or jooj it up with dainty Dutch braids (like I do here). They’re surprisingly versatile.

Today’s fun buns is/are the last of the heat-less summer hair styles I had planned for this week, and they build on day 3’s wash-and-wear ‘do.

Once again, I Oribe’d it up…

oribe mystify

Dry Texturizing Spray is an old fave of mine (I like keeping a backup on hand), but Mystify Restyling Spray is new to me. You spray it on second-day (or third- or fourth-day hair, for that matter), and it reactivates whatever styling product you have in your hair from the day before. It also has UV and heat protectors to guard your hair if you decide to use hot tools.

Let’s get ready to put the fun in ‘ze bun…

1. Fix flatness with dry shampoo

Spray a dry shampoo or texturizing spray through your hair, concentrating at the roots, to lift your second-day style.

5 Things I’ve Been Loving Lately

August 10th, 2018 by Karen 15 Comments

lemon in purse
When life literally gives you lemons…

1. Finding weird, random presents in my purse

Like this ? lemon ?, which mysteriously appeared in my Kate Spade this morning.

2. Weezer’s cover of Africa

I’ve been driving around town a little more than usual this week, and every time I’ve turned on the radio in the car, this song has been playing.

I freakin’ love it! I hear it more now than I heard the O.G. version in the ’80s, LOL.

3. This water bottle

Otherwise known as “My Terrific Temperature-Trusting Carafe.” It’s by a company called Swell, and it keeps drinks hot or cold for a reeeeeeeeeally long time. Easily all day.

swell water bottle
This thing is swell!

I put some TJ’s pink lemonade in it last Saturday (side note: their pink lemonade is the best! Not too sweet, and it’s very lemony.), and it stayed ice cold for nine hours.

Easy Everyday Hairstyles for the Dog Days of Summer, Day 3: Wash-and-Wear Wow

August 9th, 2018 by Karen 22 Comments

oribe wash and wear hair

And for more heat-less hairstyles for the dog days of summer, check out these posts here:

  • Day 1: The Woven Wonder
  • Day 2: Textured, Tousled Waves

I don’t know if it’s because I’ve thoroughly embraced the triple “L”s (otherwise known as #lazyladylife), or if it’s because stepping outside right now feels like walking into the world’s largest oven, but I’m super into wash-and-wear hair right now. Beach babe meets laid-back French girl chic, if you please. Loose waves that willfully bend whichever way they want, with textured ends that signify that I tried enough to care about my hair this morning but didn’t obsess over every stray strand.

Lurves it!

And ya know, it’s also an instant pick-me-up, too, because I swear, I stand up straighter and smile wider 🙂 when my hair is even just a little bit done. It makes me feel like a functional human being.

For this easy hairstyle, I used Oribe products again because right now “Or” is my “bae.”

See what I did there? (OK, that was pretty lame. I should not be allowed to say “bae” in public.)

oribe featherbalm weightless styler

Here’s how you can work those dog-days-of-summer breezes to your air drying advantage:

1. Prep with a repairing shampoo and conditioner to heal any damaged ends

I like shampoos and conditioners that don’t strip my color, and Gold Lust Shampoo and Conditioner do that while simultaneously adding moisture and shine.

oribe wash and wear hair

2. Towel dry, then apply a lightweight, moisturizing styling balm from the mid-shaft to the ends

Here’s the thing about air drying: unless you’re one of the lucky people who steps out of the shower with perfect hair that automatically falls into place (my friend Christine has hair like this, and yes, I’ve been jealous for over two decades), you gotta work a little something-something into it. Ideally, it’s a styling balm that does a bit of everything — moisture, hold, a touch of smoothness, and hydration, of course! The goal is to tame that mane a little (but not too much).

Oribe Featherbalm does everything aforementioned, so your air-dried ‘do looks done but not overly worked.
