Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 528

June 11th, 2018 by Karen 30 Comments

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Good question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past gazillion years (more than 10!). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a great start. ?

Rise and shine, morning glory! Happy Monday. ?? I’ll be in and out today because I have some cool things to do for the Connor Claire store. And I want to do ’em. So that’s what I’m doing today, but I’m also blogging in a way because I’ll be wearing makeup and testing a few things to share with you.

Now, the poll!

1. A little…never hurt anyone.

A little dry shampoo never hurt anyone (best one of all time: R+Co Death Valley). I mean, if you think about it, you get an extra day out of your hairdo, lift at your roots, and, in some cases, kick-@ss perfumes (hi, Oribe)… Actually, when I’m done with this, I’m gonna use some because my hair feels gross. It’s been like two days since I washed it.

2. Crazy baby hairs — how the heck do you tame them?

Well, you can stop fighting them and just let them be all crazy, which is what I do sometimes. Or, you can do certain things, like redirecting your part, to make the taming process a little easier.

I part slightly down the center left now, whereas I used to do a deep part on my right, and the only reason I do this now is because of a few weeks when I was too tired to bother with my hair, and I just let it do what it wanted to, and the baby hairs always went a certain way…so when I just go with it and don’t spend all my life fighting them, it makes my life easier.

So, go with the grain.

Also, use lots of products if you need to. I highly recommend R+Co – CONTROL Flexible Paste, and also use a strong hairspray that doesn’t flake (I like Bumble and Bumble Strong Finish Firm Hold Hairspray).

3. Who or what do you currently need a break from?

Honestly, I would love a break — or, perhaps, a permanent breakup — from my anxiety. That would be nice. Basically…it’s hard to adult in the Bay Area. There are so many times when I just wish we could pack up and move someplace 1) cheaper, 2) that isn’t out in the middle of nowhere, 3) that’s still close to my family, 4) that has nice weather 5) and lots of Asians and different cultures.

Where is this place?? You tell me, ’cause I’ll move there. I’ll be your neighbor! ??

Anyway, kids are expensive! And Connor’s starting preschool soon. If we conveniently won the lottery, that would be great.

4. What kind of pie would you like?

I don’t think peaches are in season yet, but they should be soon, right? I would love a peach pie with a crust made from scratch and a big scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. (Not Breyers though. Breyers is bullsh*t.)

5. Reggae — love it or leave it?

I love it for about three hours if it’s sunny and I’m drinking a Corona and wearing shorts and a tank top, but after that I’m asking the DJ to please play something else. I’m done pretending I’m in a Shaggy video.

~ Advice on fancy ice cream and life ~

I went to a frou-frou ice cream place last weekend for birthday ice cream, and I appreciated their attention to detail with all organic everything, but you have to test every single flavor you’re considering when you go to a place like that. You don’t just jump in and get the mint and then be shocked when it actually tastes like real mint (like El Hub did, haha).

I tested all the flavors. I did my due diligence. ??

So test, test, test! Test all those flavors, girl — even if you’re holding up the line and people are behind you tapping their foot.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Here are the questions for you to copy and paste with your answers in a comment:

1. A little…never hurt anyone.
2. Crazy baby hairs — how the heck do you tame them?
3. Who or what do you currently need a break from?
4. What kind of pie would you like?
5. Reggae — love it or leave it?

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 505

June 10th, 2018 by Karen 8 Comments

Not even my cat got me flowers for my birthday yesterday. 🙁 So I passive aggressively sent him pics from his recent floral-inspired kitty modeling exploits to remind him of his transgression.

We play psychological games like that with each other… We’re Real Housewives like that.

Saturday Surfing, June 9th, 2018 (The Birthday Edition)

June 9th, 2018 by Karen 21 Comments

A particularly relaxed woman at the Spa on the Plaza, Portola Hotel & Spa, Monterey Bay, California

Hiya! Happy Saturday from Monterey, California! This is the face of a blissed-out birthday lady who just had an hour-long deep-tissue massage.

Ah…

I said “peace out” to my 42nd year on the earth last night with a visit to the Spa on the Plaza, and uh… So good. Afterwards, I hit up the steam room, and since nobody was there (I was one of the last appointments of the day), I spread out a bunch of towels, laid down, tucked a towel underneath my neck, and sweated it out.

The spa had these fancy showers with three shower heads — one directly overhead, one than hits you from the front, and one that hits from the side — and no joke, I was in there for 30 minutes! It. Was. Glorious.

The spa was stocked — shampoo, conditioner, body wash, razors — but halfway through I remembered one time when Cindy, Jen and I went to a spa a few years back, and Jen brought her own body scrub, hair mask and face mask to turn the fancy spa shower into an “experience,” and I wish I’d thought of doing that this time.

Maybe (hopefully) next birthday.

Now, we’re off to the aquarium! I have it on good authority that Dori and Nemo were last spotted there… 😉

Here are some stories last week that caught my eye…

  • The Fenty Effect is officially a thing now, as more and more brands are offering a wider range of foundation shades.
  • There’s a small but growing pro-gray hair community on social media, and it’s starting to shake up the hair care industry.
  • This month I started testing products from Frank Beauty, an Australian line available in the U.S. now, and this article talks about one of the co-founders, Bree Johnson, and how she and her partners built the company into a global brand.
  • Makeup artist Thomas de Kluyver is new to me, but he’s been doing club-inspired makeup since his club days in the ’90s. Now he’s famous for his magazine and runway work. His style isn’t what I’d wear most days, but I love his artistry and how he uses color in unconventional ways.
  • This is what it’s like to have a custom-made perfume created for you by the Queen of England’s personal perfumer.
  • I can’t believe there are people out there who’d need or want this, buuuuut if you’ve been hoping for a ring that shoots out perfume every time someone calls your cell, HERE YA GO.
  • Speaking of technology, this rotating kitty litter machine looks absolutely terrifying, but it allegedly makes it easier to scoop poop.
  • I’ve gotta thank this guy — well, technically thank his nose! — for creating one of my fave scents of the ’90s: CK One. Master perfumer Alberto Morillas, also the nose behind Marc Jacobs Daisy, Estée Lauder Pleasures and Kenzo Flower, was shocked by the success of CK One. About it he says…

“In all honesty, I never expected CK One to be that famous. Sure, I hope all of my creations are successful, but I never knew it would be so quick and leave such a lasting impact,” he says. “In as little as three months, everyone in the world wanted CK One, and it’s the first time something like that had happened in my career. Young women, men, everybody enjoyed wearing it and that was such a unique thing — it still is. In the world of perfumery, things like that don’t happen very often.”

  • Have you seen any beauty products that contain “starfish fluid,” because, apparently, it’s a thing? Like a dairy farmer, fishermen in Canada milk fluid from starfish for use by the cosmetic industry.

    Seriously, who knew?!

Have a wonderful weekend, whatever you’re up to. See you soon.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

[The Shower Files] A Terrific Tropical Duo From H2O+ Beauty…and Disposable Razors to Avoid

June 8th, 2018 by Karen 8 Comments

h2o plus beauty coconut verbena
Stuff in my shower I’m loving…and stuff I’m not

OK, I’ll come clean (haha! Get it?). I spend an inordinate amount of time in my shower because 1) nobody asks me questions while I’m in there, 2) nobody bites my ankles, 3) nobody tugs at my hair, tries to get on my lap, or begs for food (I’m talking to you, Tabs). It’s my safe place, so if it seems like I spend more time showering than a normal woman should, it’s BECAUSE I AM HIDING. 🙂

A couple things I’m currently using in the pursuit of covert cleanliness…

H2O+ Beauty Coconut Verbena Body Wash and Body Butter Body Duo ($34 for both)

I’m gonna call it. This will be a summer 2018 “must have.” Between the foamy bath gel (bubbly nirvana) and the moisturizing body butter (I’ve got lizard skin and use it twice/day — once in the morning and again at night), my skin smells like I just teleported here from the Grand Hyatt in Poipu on Kauai.

Lemony without venturing into Pledge territory, and coco-nutty without smelling like a corny celebrity perfume. It’s hard to find something that smells tropical without the eau de sunscreen notes, a la Bobbi Brown Beach, and this hits the spot. Plus, the backs of your knees won’t feel sticky afterwards (totally crucial).

Have You Ever Dealt With Cystic Acne? What Was It Like?

June 8th, 2018 by Karen 15 Comments

I have. It was when I was in my late teens (~19), and, in a nutshell, it was not fun.

Before that, when I was still in high school, my skin was clear and smooth. I still got the occasional pimple, especially on my forehead, but it didn’t get serious until my sophomore year in college.

For one, it hurt. Like, physically hurt. The pimples I had were big and red, and they were tender to the touch, and I remember so clearly how simple things that I take for granted now, like washing my face or putting on sunscreen, became a chore because it hurt to touch my face.

And then when I started taking Accutane in my sophomore year, my face hurt even more because the medication dried out my skin and made it extremely sensitive to sunlight and, surprisingly, even wind.

On sunny, breezy days my cheeks would hurt like a MUTHA. I remember stepping out of my apartment one day, seeing that there was a breeze outside, and wishing that it was socially acceptable to wear a helmet around campus and to lectures.

And of course there was the mental and emotional pain. I got really, REALLY good at hiding behind my hair and under hoodies.

Then there were the comments from people, most of them friends and family who felt like they could say anything about the state of my skin. It was never from strangers. Today I remembered someone mentioning all of my “big old gross pimples” in a picture of us, and it brought back sharp pangs in my heart… Why is it that the people who are closest to us often feel like they have free reign to say hurtful things?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. I hope this post wasn’t a downer for you. I didn’t mean for it to be. I just know that it was something I went through, and other people probably do too. I hope you have a nice Friday. 🙂 TGIF!

Wearing the New MAC Aaliyah Collection (VIDEO REVIEW)

June 7th, 2018 by Karen 14 Comments

mac aaliyah collection
Wearing Eye Shadow X 9 in Age Ain’t Nothing, Bronzing Powder in Baby Girl and Lipglass in Li Li’s Motor City from the new limited edition MAC Aaliyah collection, coming June 20th to the MAC website and select stores June 21st.

You know what I just realized? I just realized that I can tie different eras from my teens and 20s to Aaliyah’s music. Like, Jen, Cindy and I played Back and Forth so much in the summer before I left for college, and then in the spring of my senior year at Davis, Are You That Somebody was almost constantly on the radio whenever Eleanor, Mary Anne, Christine and I drove anywhere (In-N-Out after class, to the city late at night to go clubbing, house parties, the library, to go rollerblading all over town, to the gym).

And then around the time El Hub and I met, Rock the Boat was THE JAM.

Aaliyah’s legacy lives on through her music, and her fans lobbied hard for a MAC collection.

What a Fab Formula! Clinique Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Mineral Sunscreen Lotion for Body Sensitive Skin

June 7th, 2018 by Karen 13 Comments

clinique mineral sunscreen for body
Feeling this!

Mineral sunscreen realness right hurr! I wore this a lot last weekend, when it was hotter than baby-faced Ethan Hawke in the ’90s, and I have absolutely zero complaints.

Clinique SPF 30 Mineral Sunscreen for Body ($32 for a 4.2 fl. oz. bottle)

No sticky inner elbows or greasy limbs. No sticky neck. No weird white sheen on my skin — which makes it virtually unheralded for a mineral sunscreen! No beads of sunscreen dripping down my face and into my eyes as I sweat through my day.

“A gentle, 100 percent mineral sunscreen that glides on easily and absorbs quickly for virtually invisible defense. Incredibly comfortable, even for sensitive skins, this lightweight formula glides on easily and absorbs quickly for non-irritating broad spectrum defense. Invisible shield technology forms a protective veil that’s virtually invisible on all skin tones.”

— Sephora website

Best of all, the formula is kinda melty and runny, and it sinks right in, so instead of having to work a thick paste into my legs and arms for 10 minutes, I just put it on like a regular lotion in the morning and move on with my life. It’s also unscented, so it won’t clash with your Designer Imposters Body Spray (I kid, I kid!). 🙂

The Revamped MAC Eye Brows Styler Stands Up to Sweat

June 6th, 2018 by Karen 9 Comments

mac eye brows styler
MAC revamped the Eye Brows Styler pencils, and they’re GOOD ($18 each, available in eight shades).

It cooled down quite a bit here since last weekend. At least 20 degrees. Last weekend it was freakin’ ? hot. Like, the type of hot that makes you feel like your thighs are going to spontaneously combust into beef jerky slabs when you climb into your car.

To beat the heat, I left the house to get my errands done early on Saturday morning, but I was still sweating like a nervous teenager on a first dance. I was really surprised when I got home to find that my brows were still doing their thing. HELLO! — it’s the little things, ya know? Like not sweatin’ your face off while you’re buying watermelon and strawberries.

Thanks, MAC Eye Brows Styler pencil!

MAC revamped it recently, and I’ve been using the new version. I like it! Did you ever use the old one? I used it once or twice, and I can’t remember why I didn’t use it on the regular.

This new version is cool. Granted, I don’t remember how I felt about the previous one, but this one doesn’t budge at all.

“Self-propelling, self-sharpening, brow-defining – and now with an updated water-resistant formula and added spoolie. Offers grooming alongside extreme colour precision in one dynamic microfine pencil that emulates fine hair-like strokes on brows for a perfected look. Confidently adds what you need: shape, colour and/or density. Like a pen, creates its own just-right point for striking arches. Easy to tote around — no sharpener needed.”

— MAC website

The old one didn’t have a spoolie, but this one does, and I like it because it means that I can fill in my brows without having to grab a separate brow comb.

Also, the tip of the pencil is thinner than it was in the old version, and it’s crazy precise. I can draw individual tiny brow hairs without really thinking about it. By comparison, it’s more precise than MAC Brow Sculpt, which I also like.

Overall, I like the defined look and overall shape of my brows when I use this (they’re sharp, but not Insta-sharp, although you could easily do that too if you wanted).
