Is There a Graceful Way to Go Gray?

May 18th, 2017 by Karen 43 Comments

Literally counting the seconds to my next coloring appointment

I’ve been dyeing my hair for what feels like forever. I think the last time I rocked my natural color from roots to ends, gosh… It must’ve been when I was in my 20s. Maybe? It’s been a really long time.

I’m currently two weeks out from a hair coloring appointment with my friend Alis, who lives and works in Las Vegas but visits here to California every couple of months and takes some appointments (I usually go every six to eight weeks).

Girl, I love going to the salon. It’s like a getaway experience for me. For two hours, I tune out, read trashy magazines and just get to be pampered for that short block of time. 🙂 Ah…

But even though it’s a fun thing for me, little by little, it’s starting to feel less like a treat, and more like hair handcuffs, because now whenever I go, it’s like, “Ugh, gotta cover up these grays!” My hair is getting to the point where my roots are very obvious while they’re growing out.

I’m seriously considering letting my hair go to its natural raw state, but I just don’t know if there’s an elegant way to make the jump to gray, especially with dark hair.

Yes, this is not a serious problem in the greater scheme of things. I realize this, but still.

Maybe it would be easier if I were completely gray. I’m probably about 15% now. Actually, more than that. Maybe 20%. 30%? Anyway, now gray hairs are starting to show up in my baby hairs on my forehead and, like, in my bangs and on the veeeeeery top of my head, so they aren’t as easy to hide.

If I were 100% gray already, at least it would be a single color, like cool girl gray hair, but that’s not the case. I would be salt ‘n’ pepper, but without the dope rhymes or Spinderella.

Brand Spotlight: IGK

Getting to know the IGK hair care line

Girl, there’s this IGK display at the Sephora by my house that I’ve walked past…I don’t know how many times, and I swear to gawd, up until about a month ago, I thought it was a display for R+Co!

Doesn’t the packaging look similar?

IGK has cute packaging, yeah?

Still, I should probably, like, get my eyes checked soon. Maybe I should break down and get Lasik already.

IGK is a pretty new brand. I think they showed up in 2016, so they’re still the new kids on the hair block.

The name “IGK” is an acronym based on the names of the founders — two brothers and two of their friends — Frank Izquierdo, Leo Izquierdo, Aaron Grenia and Chase Kusero.

There’s a reference to “X-Men.” Wait for it.

They’re all US hairstylists who work in different cities, and if you look closely at the labels, they have a code at the top — MIA, NYC and LA — which is a shout-out to their respective city and the name of the scent, of which there are three in the line.

MIA, or the Miami scent, has guava, coconut water, pink lotus, violet and vanilla notes.
LA, the Los Angeles scent, has notes of bergamot, lemon zest, mimosa, heliotrope and black amber.
NYC, the New York City scent, has of black pepper, blackberry, violet, geranium and leather notes.

They’ve got everything you need to take care of hair — shampoos, conditioners and hair styling products. All of the products are cruelty free, offer UV and heat protection protection, and are made without mineral oils or petroleum.

Smoke & Mirrors Conditioning Cleansing Oil ($29)

I’ve tried a handful of things, and the product I’m totally and completely in love with is Smoke & Mirrors Conditioning Cleansing Oil.

How to Not Lose Your Damn Mind When You’re Shopping for Beauty Products

May 17th, 2017 by Karen 10 Comments

Nope!

When I’m at Sephora and one of the sales associates walks up to me with an empty basket, I turn into the emoji with the crossed hands, like, NO!

Literally. So. Me.

Those baskets are my downfall, man. I can go into a Sephora with one specific item in mind, but if someone hands me a basket while I’m there, it’s suddenly, “Oh, shampoo! I definitely need a new one, and here’s an eyeliner I’ve been wanting to try, and what a pretty glitter shadow! Yup, I need that too. Now, hmm… What did I come here again for??” Seriously, those baskets are a free-for-all, and I’m throwing stuff in there like there’s no tomorrow.

So, I live and die by this beauty shopping rule: I can only go up to the cash register with whatever I can hold in my hands.

It sounds so #basic, but it’s surprisingly effective! If you, too, are prone to walking into a Sephora (or a Target or Ulta or really anyplace with shopping baskets) and going into a fugue state while beauty shopping, limit yourself to whatever you can hold in your hands. It’ll basically save you from yourself.

Marc Jacobs Is Going Nuts for Coconuts

May 17th, 2017 by Karen 26 Comments

marc jacobs coconut products
Crazy for coconuts!

I wonder if Marc Jacobs has ever opened a coconut… He likes coconuts, obviously, because there’s a bunch of new products in his makeup line that are coconut inspired and have coconut water in them, but has homeboy actually ever opened a coconut? I hope he has! And I hope you have at least once, because it’s weirdly empowering. Girl, we’ll get to Marc’s new coconut bronzer and highlighter in a second, but let me just tell you that I opened a coconut this morning for the very first time — used a hammer to lay the beat down on that husk! — and when that bad boy finally cracked open, I was like, “YES! I opened a coconut, motherf*ckers! I CAN DO ANYTHING.”

It felt really good. LOL! Anyway, just your daily fruit diversion. 🙂

Marc’s got some new coco-nutty products, and they’re all about tans, glowing and summer skin.

O!Mega Bronzer Coconut Perfect Tan

The new bronzer is kind of ridic because of the price — $49!! I know. Think of it this way, though: at least it’s cheaper than Tom Ford’s.

It’s called the O!Mega Bronzer Coconut Perfect Tan because it smells like coconuts (it’s not overwhelming or faux-sweet), but looking at the ingredient list, it doesn’t appear to have coconut in it.

Hmm…

I’ve never tried the original O!MegaBronzer in Marc’s permanent line, but I’ve read that this new one is supposed to have the same formula. It’s LE and has different packaging (crisp summer white!). It also has a different undertone, which is less warm and more neutral than the bronzer in Marc’s permanent collection.

The Surratt Beauty Relevée Lash Curler or the Shiseido Eyelash Curler?

May 17th, 2017 by Karen 12 Comments

I got these two curlers during the Sephora VIB sale last month because I needed to replace my ancient, much-loved Shu Uemura curler.

Yup, my little trooper finally broke (RIP). 🙁

I’d heard that they’re similar to Shu’s curler and read some rave reviews, and so, in typical Karen fashion, since I couldn’t decide between them…I grabbed both.

They’re similarly shaped and flatter than many lash curlers (like the ones by Tarte, Urban Decay and MAC), and I like this shape a lot because it fits my eyes better than most.

The Troy Surratt Relevée Lash Curler (which is $30) is just a teensy bit wider than the Shiseido one (which is $20), and when I place my lashes into it (the Surratt one) and press down, there’s no pinching at all, whereas I feel a little bit of pinching on my outer lashes with the Shiseido curler if I hit them at certain angles or get too close to the lash base.

With the Troy Surratt curler, I can really get up in there.

I also like the lash look I get with the Surratt curler a bit more. The curl is more pronounced, and I just think it looks more natural and better.

The Shiseido one definitely has its advantages, though. It costs $10 less and comes with an extra silicone pad. I mean, I like the curl (although it’s more of a crimp) I get when I use it, and I think it’s pretty.

Oh! — also, because the Surratt is wider, I can easily fit false lashes into it (on those rare occasions when I wear falsies and want them to curl with my natural lashes).

Honestly, though, I don’t think you’d go really wrong with either one. Both are solid choices. It mostly depends on whether you want the extra width.

In order, I like the…

  1. Troy Surratt Beauty Relevée Lash Curler
  2. Shu Uemura Lash Curler
  3. Shiseido Eyelash Curler
  4. MAC Full Lash Curler

The Lust List, Vol. 9: Stuff I Kinda Want

May 16th, 2017 by Karen 24 Comments

Moar, she said. MOOOOAR!

Me: Karen, you should stop cruising the interwebz, because whenever you do it, you always end up with even moar lemmings.

Also Me: Karen, you shouldn’t stop cruising the interwebz, because whenever you do it, you always end up with even moar lemmings.

Do you see the problem here? Ah, the eternal conflict…

Sometimes I like to pretend that it makes a difference when the things I’m lusting after are things I know I would use all the time, like…

  1. Sephora Collection Colorful Shadow & Liner ($14 each) — The purple pencil I picked up last week was my gateway pencil into this line of cream stick shadows/eyeliners. I didn’t even realize there mattes until I got back home and looked them up on the Sephora website. Of course, now I want all the browns, as well as electric blue My Boyfriend’s Jeans, because it’s hard to find electric blue shadows/liners that are matte. Have you ever noticed that?
  2. Bumble & Bumble Sunday Shampoo ($25) — I want to be a rebel and use this on a Saturday! ? I had an ill-fated run-in with a Klorane shampoo and conditioner for dry hair last week, and now my hair feels heavy…like it has 10 years of product built up in it. A friend recommended this clarifying shampoo, and I’m definitely gonna get it because I need something to get all of this stuff outta my hair. Plus, I read recently that clarifying shampoos can help with color-treated hair by removing excess product, so your hair color doesn’t look dull. I don’t know if that’s true, but I’m hoping it is?
  3. Pretty Vulgar Bird’s Nest Blurring Beauty Mousse Foundation ($44) — Gimme anything that with the word “blurring” in the name. The mousse part sounds cool, too. Lightweight!
  4. Drunk Elephant Umbra Tinte Physical Daily Defense Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 30 ($36) — I’ve been using a few Drunk Elephant products for about month now, and I really like them a lot. This is their new tinted sunscreen, and I’m intrigued.
  5. Brooks Ravenna 8 ($110) — I think I’ve finally mostly recovered from the cold/cough from Hades I had. Dang, that thing lingered. I’m ready to get back into running again, and these colors remind me of Skittles.
  6. Athleta Ready Set Go 2 in 1 Short ($59) — It was HOT here in Novato a couple weeks ago, and I noticed one night at the gym where I go to my HIIT class that they have really crappy air conditioning. I was miserably hot in my Zella capris, which usually keep me cool, so I’m looking for some new workout shorts, but I don’t want to be wearing tight shorts, you know what I mean? And I don’t want shorts that are so loose that they go flapping in the wind and let everyone see my butt cheeks while I’m doing burpies. These shorts from Athleta look perfect! There’s a tighter base layer with looser shorts on top, so the boo-tay isn’t on display for all the world to see. I just wish they weren’t so expensive.
  7. May Coop Raw Sauce ($43) — My friend has dry skin (hey, Marisol!) and totally recommends this. Not that I need to throw another product up into my skin care mix, but it’s been windy here lately, and the wind sucks all of the moisture outta my face, especially my cheeks.
  8. Lancôme Matte Shaker Liquid Lipstick ($22) —
Breyerchic mentioned these Matte Shaker Liquid Lipsticks in the comments on a post and said that I NEED one in my life… This orange coral one is calling to me.
  9. Urban Decay Naked Skin Shapeshifter ($45) — Urban Decay recently released these powder/cream contouring/highlighting blush palettes a while ago, and even though I’m not a contouring person (she says for the millionth time), I wanna try them, mostly because I think the packaging looks cool.

Have you been wanting anything lately? Wait — let me rephrase that. 🙂 What have you been wanting lately?

Stay (Rose) Golden, BECCA: The New BECCA X Chrissy Teigen Glow Face Palette

May 16th, 2017 by Karen 17 Comments

The new BECCA Chrissy Teigen X Glow Face Palette ($46)

So, remember when rose gold hit the scene this last time, and everybody went crazy for it? When was that…? 2014? 2015? I keep thinking that one day it’s going to fall out of fashion, but it doesn’t appear to be going anywhere anytime soon, am I right? Like, the new BECCA X Chrissy Teigen Glow Face Palette ($46) is ROSE. GOLD. EVERYTHING. And I’m lovin’ it.

Isn’t it pretty??

This face palette… It caused quite a stir when it launched a couple weeks ago. I had a friend text me, and she was like, “Should I get it? SHOULD I GET IT?” and I was like, “I dunno! You should get it if you want to,” and she texted back, “Well, OK, I guess I’ll hold off on it…” Then she wrote back 30 minutes later and said, “I bought it!”

I totally get why it would ignite a frenzy. I mean, even the outside packaging is beyond beautiful. It’s got pinkish peach marbling and the BECCA X Chrissy logo.

But when you open it, it gets even better.

Purple Power! A New Purple Liner Love I Found at Sephora

May 16th, 2017 by Karen 15 Comments

purple eyeliners
Kindasorta obsessed with purple at the moment. Here’s an assortment of old faves (and a new one!) from the top: MAC Eye Kohl in Prunella ($17), Urban Decay Glide on Eye Pencil in Vice ($20), Sephora Colorful Shadow & Liner in Violet ($14), Make Up For Ever Waterproof Eye Pencil in 1-90 ($21) and MAC Pearlglide Intense in Designer Purple ($17)

It’s both wonderful and terrifying to live so close to a Sephora, because when I get on a makeup whim, I can just hop in my car, and BAM! Five minutes later I’ve got every purple liner in the store swatched on the back of my hand.

Yeah, I’m going through a purple liner phase right meow, big time (in case you haven’t noticed, LOL!). I love the look of a warm brown lid with purple liner on the lash lines. I’ve just been into it lately! Please be patient with me as I work my way through it…

Anyways, Connor convinced me to go to Sephora last Friday (yes, it was all the baby’s doing), so we went looking for a new purple to add to my collection. This latest love is a shade called Violet by Sephora Collection.
