Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 440

September 12th, 2016 by Karen 29 Comments

monday poll
I’ve got a thing for notebooks…

You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”

Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past NINE (!) years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.

  1. Last time you had a Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks?
Gawd, I love those things… I think the last one I had was in December. I know they’re already out there because I’ve seen people with them.

I NEED to go get one soon! Wanna come with me? ?☕️

  2. Last dream you remember?
    It was so weird!

    Are you ready for it?

OK…I dreamt that Connor and I were hanging out at home on the couch, and I looked down at her knees and saw that she had a small patch of long, black wiry hairs (like from a wig at the bottom of the bargain bin at Party City) growing out of the side of her left knee.

Then I started checking her and found more of these patches of stiff hairs that looked like plastic hair brush bristles growing between her toes and even from the bottom of her heel!

What was even weirder? I wasn’t freaking out at all! Every time I found another patch of hair, I just thought, “How odd!” But I wasn’t panicked.

    It was so weird!

Oh, and here’s another random thing: every time I have a dream with Connor, she’s always her current age. She’s never younger or older.

  3. Who was the last person you complimented, and what was the compliment?
It was El Hub yesterday morning, and we were just waking up but still in bed. I gave him a big hug, squeezed his elbow and said, “Nice elbows.”

    LOL!

  4. Who was the last person you gave flowers to?
My mom for Mother’s Day. Before that I sent my friend Jen a small bouquet when she was feeling blue and needed some cheering up.
  5. How are your brows today?
They’re a touch unruly but not full-blown out of control. I need to do some cleanup plucking under my arches, and the longer bits in the outer tail could use a trim…

Aren’t brows funny? Mine will seem perfectly fine for weeks, but then I’ll look in the mirror one day and see two long-haired Persian cat tails where my eyebrows are supposed to be! It’s crazy.

Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!

1. Last time you had a Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks?
2. Last dream you remember?
3. Who was the last person you complimented, and what was the compliment?
4. Who was the last person you gave flowers to?
5. How are your brows today?

Happy Monday, sweet pea. Up and at ’em!

So I’m going through my four (!) favorite notebooks right now to figure out how to handle my day…

Yes, I have four favorite notebooks, because each one has a different purpose, like, the small kitty cat one helps me keep track of emails, and the 106 one with the black-and-white cats tracks something else.

I suppose I could track everything in a spreadsheet or using my phone, but there’s something about writing stuff down… It sticks in my brain better. Maybe I’m just old-school like that.

The latest addition to the family is the hot pink spiral-bound notebook, which is a replacement for a sparkly purple glitter notebook that Tabs threw up on the other day.

You know cats. Despite having a wide range of places upon which to barf that would be easy to clean (like the tiles in the hallway), they find your ONE REALLY IMPORTANT NOTEBOOK that has all of your to-do lists and brainstorming in it, and then barf on that.

Ah, cats!

I hope your day got off to a calm start, and if it didn’t, here’s a gentle hug to ease your mind. *hug* 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 414

September 11th, 2016 by Karen 24 Comments

tabs-cat-connorclaire-7

For the longest time, Tabs only had one girl who was madly in love with him.

(Me, obviously.)

But now he has two, and I’m pretty sure he’s thrilled about it.

I don’t know… It’s kind of hard to tell sometimes.

The other day we — Connor, Tabs and I — were just hanging out in the living room, and he walked up to her and let her pet him. Of course, this was done with supervision and lots of “When we pet Tabs, we have to do it gently” kind of talk.

Then, after some pets and some gentle rubs from Connor, Tabs walked up to her and headbutted her face.

It was so cute! My heart felt like it was going to melt in my chest like a piece of chocolate.

Three Ways to Brow Wow With the New $34 Benefit Brow Kits in Soft & Natural, Defined & Refined and Bigger & Bolder

September 10th, 2016 by Karen 8 Comments

The new Benefit Brow Kits, $34 each

Good morning, glory! Today we’re talking brows, and I’m wondering…would any plaid skirt-wearing, midriff-bearing ’90s girl worth her salt have bothered with any of the new Benefit Brow Kits back in the day? As a survivor of the decade that gave us the Jeremy Jordan (and, as someone who plucked away her brows into oblivion), I think I can safely say HELL NO.

All matte errrthing? Coo’. Dark brown vampire lips? Feelin’ it. Of all the ’90s makeup trends that have boomeranged back into the public consciousness recently, I’m so happy the ’90s brow has stayed back in ye olde times.

OMG, dude. Or should I should I say ’90s non-brow? — because really, there wasn’t a whole lot of brow to be working with.

So, yeah, I love big brows and I cannot lie, and it looks like Benefit does too because their new $34 Brow Kits are all about full, lush brows.

Each one comes in versions with light, medium or dark shades and a different mix of full- and travel-sized brow products for specific looks…depending on what you’d like to wear with your Docs, velvet choker and your babydoll floral print dress that day. 🙂

The Soft & Natural Brows kit

First, to add just a little oomph to your natural brows, there’s the Soft & Natural Brows kit.

This one suits my style the most because I like a full brow that doesn’t look overly drawn in.

New $22 Too Faced Lip Injection Glossy Juicy Color Plumping Lip Gloss

Holy habaneros, girl! Somebody grab a fire extinguisher because my lips are on FIYAHHH! — and I’m not talking jalapeños. I’m talking next-level ghost pepper to the Nth degree flames rising up from the depths of the earth’s primordial molten core HOT! ?? That’s how my lips feel when I wear these new Too Faced Lip Injection Glossy Juicy Color Plumping Lip Glosses.

These bees sting like battling rivals on the dance floor!

Thankfully, it does subside after a few minutes…

So, yeah…on one hand, I feel like I’m making out with a ghost pepper when I wear these, but on the other hand, I like how they shine (like the twinkle in Nick Jonas’ eye when he sings about lost love).

I also like how long they last and how thick they feel, so they stick to my lips for 3-4 hours.

Say Hey to the Gals in the Benefit Holiday 2016 Sassy Lassie, Girl-A-Rama and Kissy Missy Sets

September 9th, 2016 by Karen 12 Comments

benefit holidbenefit holiday 2016ay 2016
Hey, cuties!

Babycakes, on a scale of “1” to full-blown Ricksanity, where do you think I’d stand if I were to walk into a salon with Benefit’s Kissy Missy Holiday 2016 set and said, “Do this to my hair”?

CUUUTE!

I’d wanna hang with a girl with bubblegum pink hair and big-@ss hoops. I bet she’d be cool as hell!

I want to hang with all of the girls on these new holiday sets from Benefit. These chicas are three of the six new Holiday 2016 Benefit sets that officially arrive on counters September 30 (although I’ve already seen a few of them at Ulta).

The Benefit Girl-A-Rama set ($36) and Kissy Missy set ($26)

Benefit loves their limited edition sets, and these have products — some with minis, some with full-size pieces and some with a combination of both — from their permanent line.

Of course, Benetint and Hoola make appearances, as they so often do every year (like in the $39 Sassy Lassie set here), but every once in a while Benefit will put newer items in a set, and that’s the case with the $46 Girl-A-Rama set, which has the new They’re Real Duo Shadow Blender in Brazen Bronze, and the Kissy Missy set, which has mini versions of the new They’re Real Double the Lip Lipsticks in Revved-Up Red and Pink Thrills.

MAC Liptensity Collection Lip Swatches and First Impressions

September 8th, 2016 by Karen 21 Comments

The new MAC Liptensity Collection

I wonder what it’s like to see things like Maureen Seaberg does, who used her genetic tetrachromatic ability to see 100 million color variations in her collaboration with MAC on the new MAC Liptensity Lipstick collection (coming Sept. 20 to the MAC website).

I bet it would be a lot cooler than what I usually see…which is barely anything half the time, LOL! Could somebody pass my glasses, please?

I just powered through these swatches, so a few of them are a little dicey. My apologies, but homegirl was flyin’! Some of the darker shades definitely could have used more babying, particularly Stallion, the black shade, and dark Blue Beat.

Hey, ma, I did my best in the two minutes I alloted myself to do each of them, but they’re the kind of colors that could easily take 15 minutes to apply flawlessly.

How Do You Feel About Holiday Collections Coming Out This Early?

September 8th, 2016 by Karen 21 Comments

Tabs in his Christmas outfit
I think you can tell how Tabs feels about it…

It’s still technically summer here in the U.S. — summer — but the holiday makeup collections are already showing up!

I went to Ulta the other day to grab a tube of Urban Decay Naked Skin One & Done and saw holiday stuff from Benefit on display.

I can totally appreciate wanting to get a jump on your holiday shopping and trying to get everything done waaay before the Christmas craziness, but holiday collections in summer? Isn’t that kinda cray?

I joke about Christmas in July, but seriously, it’s only matter of time before that actually happens, LOL!

How do you feel about holiday collections coming out this early? Does it get you excited to hear the word “holiday,” or does it make you feel kinda grumpy?

Karen

So Long, Dolla-Dolla Bills! The Giorgio Armani Runway Fall/Winter ’16 Limited Edition Collection Is Here

September 7th, 2016 by Karen 20 Comments

armani runway fall winter 16
Two of three items from the Giorgio Armani Runway Fall/Winter ’16 Limited Edition Collection

I have a theory that we’re going to lose our command of the English language someday because it’ll be completely replaced by the use of emojis, and when that day comes, if I’m still kickin’ and startin’ sh*t and bustin’ moves at the grown folks club, this is how I’d convey this review of the Giorgio Armani Beauty Runway Fall/Winter ’16 Limited Edition Collection:

????????????

Dude, this palette? It’s one hundred and twenty bones.

$120!

No, seriously.

OK, now, I’m down to make it rain sometimes (says the girl who just put the $80 Hourglass Surreal Light palette into her Sephora cart ???), but $120 for a compact with a transparent face powder and three eyeshadows??

That’s like an alternate universe-type price where diamond-studded grills are a valid form of retirement savings.
