Rouge Bunny Rouge Masters of Texture: A Cosmetics Collection Befitting an Old World Fairy Tale

May 17th, 2016 by Jessica Revitte 11 Comments

Rouge Bunny Rouge Masters of Texture Collection
Wearing Rouge Bunny Rouge Raw Garden Eyeshadow Palette in 086 Antigo, Loves Lights Highlighting Powder in 066 Goddess, Alchemy Long Lasting Brow Liner in 088 Antimony and Dazzling Siip Tinted Luxe Balm in 091 Pinch of Nude

Ever encounter a cosmetic brand that’s so fabulous, so excitingly enshrouded in mystery that it almost feels magical to get your hands on a few products? For me, Rouge Bunny Rouge has always been that brand.

Perhaps it’s the whimsical product names, the slight difficulty in procuring their products (I’m not certain there are counters stateside, for instance) and the dreamy colors. I almost always feel like birds should be sweeping the kitchen and braiding my hair while I apply Rouge Bunny Rouge cosmetics.

“Rouge Bunny Rouge is quintessentially British — a vision of intellectual beauty, a uniquely Neo-Victorian style … [the brand is] also renowned for its fantastic world of storytelling. Elements of magic, whimsy and mystery are playfully reflected in the names of [the] products.” — Rouge Bunny Rouge

Very early on in my blogging days at Getting Cheeky (and you can tell just how early on by the photography), I managed to get my hands on the stunning shadow in Abyssinian Catbird, and the love affair began. So it was with the excitement of a love-struck fairy-tale heroine that I started playing with the Rouge Bunny Rouge Masters of Texture Makeup Collection.

Please allow for a brief pause while this makeup and classic literature lover swoons…

Rouge Bunny Rouge Masters of Texture Collection
Rouge Bunny Rouge Masters of Texture Collection, straight out of the pages of a fairy tale!

I can think of no more exquisitely packaged powders than those offered by Rouge Bunny Rouge. Housed in substantial and sleek black external packaging reminiscent of Victorian hat boxes, removal of the lid reveals a weighty black compact and sweet “RBR” monogrammed powder puff.

*swoon*

Rouge Bunny Rouge’s Loves Lights Highlighting Powder ($48) is not your average trend-driven illuminator. Finely milled to the point of feeling like a cloud, these beauties create a diaphanous, rather than overt, glow.

The brand describes the formulation of the powder as being composed of “spherical powders” which “[produce] an unusual perfecting powder with smoothing properties.” While it pained me to swatch away the ephemeral dandelion pattern on the surface of the powder, the result was well worth the temporary torture. I could verily paint myself from head to toe in 066 Goddess (an opalescent pale pink), and 067 Sweet to Touch (a gold spiked amber) pairs well with blushes of a plum hue on my complexion.

As for the Raw Garden Shadow Palette ($55) in 086 Antigo, it’s a work of art. I’ve tried many matte shadows in my time as a beauty lover, and while I have my favorites, it’s not often that I’m this impressed… To be honest, I don’t even remember the last time I audibly said “oooh!” while swatching, but Antigo accomplished just that.

Comprised of a faintly luminous golden pearl, a pink toned mink, rich deep brown and neutral coffee, this palette is as foolproof in terms of creating looks as it is indispensable. I am fully enamored of the texture and highly recommend this particular piece in the collection. Are you a neutral shadow lover? Then run, don’t walk.

Getting Fancy With the Wearable Glitter in the Sonia Kashuk Eye on Textured Nudes 4 Eye Couture Palette

May 17th, 2016 by Adia Goss 13 Comments

Wearing the Sonia Kashuk Eye on Textured Nudes 4 Eye Couture eyeshadow palette ($19.99, available at Target)

The Sonia Kashuk Eye on Textured Nudes 4 Eye Couture palette just screams “fancy night out” to me. It has a nice variety of nude colors, including four really pretty glittery shades.

The matte and satin shades have been great for everyday, but I knew that I wanted to save the glittery colors for a special event.

Like…

My mom is on the board of the Alameda Health System Foundation, which raises funds for the public hospitals and clinics in Alameda County (go, Mom!). I was going to attend the annual gala at a winery (fancy, right?), and I knew that the Sonia Kashuk Eye on Textured Nudes would be perfect.

Loving these glitter shades!

Nude palettes aren’t exactly uncommon, but I like how this one has three different textures. There are the matte shades for everyday blending; the satin shades are nice for easy washes of color, and the glitter shades are perfect for when you want a bit more drama.

The shadows don’t have names, but here are swatches. These are according to finish, and from bottom to top in the picture above.

The New Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Eye Pencils Are THE Eyeliners of all Eyeliners

May 16th, 2016 by Jen Clark 17 Comments

Makeup Forever Aqua XL Eye Pencil
The Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Waterproof Eye Pencils ($25 each) — literally, there’s a shade for everyone!

Where are my watery-eyed ladies at? (*frantically waves arms above head*)

If you’re raising your hands, listen up!

And even if you aren’t raising your hands, still listen up.

If you’re in need of an uber-pigmented, budge-proof eyeliner, look no further. The Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Waterproof Eye Pencils have arrived, and they are the *BLEEEEEP!*

Make Up For Ever teamed up with Charli XCX to create these 20 amazing $21 shades, and let me tell you about the formula, because I’ve never met another eyeliner that does what these do — and I’ve met a lot of eyeliners.

First, I’m so impressed by how smooth and pigmented they are. When first swatching them, I couldn’t believe how lightly I had to press to get a smooth, opaque line. There is no tugging or skipping here!

I did a look using shade M-26 (a matte pastel blue) on my upper lash lines, and I was able to get a wing with a pencil eyeliner.

I have never been able to do that before!

Because they are so smooth and blend-able, I was able to use a tiny angled brush to pull out the color to get that sharp wing I was looking for, and you do have some time to play and smudge if you’d like. But once they set, giiiirl, they are not moving around!

Makeup Forever Aqua XL Eye Pencil Waterproof Eyeliners
The new Makeup Forever Aqua XL Eye Pencil Waterproof Eyeliners

Now back to why I think watery-eyed girls will love these: wear time. It is usually so pointless for me to line my waterline and tightline because my eyes just wash away the color within minutes, sometimes seconds, so after hearing about these pencils and their reputation, I had to give them a go.

You guys, this liner stays on my waterline THE. ENTIRE. DAY. I kid you not. I did my makeup and used ME-42 (a metallic bronze), and when I looked in the mirror to take off my makeup that night, ME-42 was still where I put it. That has never happened to me before.

I have found a few of them that only last a couple of hours, which is still great in my book, but many of them, including ME-42, last well over six hours.

What I Wore to Work, ft. Sugarpill’s Loose Eyeshadow in Countess

May 16th, 2016 by Nicole Fraser-Herron 27 Comments

Eyeliner: Sugarpill Countess loose eyeshadow; Lips: Lumiere by Colourpop; Highlight & Contour: MAC All the Right Angles in Light

Do you ever sit down to get ready for work and just…wing it? Sure, I have a few different go-to looks for different occasions, but sometimes I’m down for a challenge.

It usually goes something like “alright Nic, we’ve got 30 minutes to shower, beat thy mug, and be out the door.” I paw at my makeup till I see something sparkly like the pigment Countess by Sugarpill ($13) and some Eyelure lashes that kind of resemble black caterpillars. Then, I decide there is no way to continue on with my day until I have giant, sparkly cat eyes and dense, fluttery lashes.

_MG_2318_web

Isn’t Countess stunning? It’s a deep maroon with subtle aqua reflects that are pretty difficult to capture on camera, but are definitely apparent in real life.

Luckily everything worked out this time, because I had to get to work.

I photographed one of my favorite shows, Baloney! Baloney is San Francisco’s first (and only) gay all-male revue. It’s part theater, dance, peepshow, and pays homage to classic burlesque and pantomime. The show was created and choreographed by some of my favorite artist friends and couple, Rory Davis and Michael Phillis. It is among the most visually stunning shows I’ve seen and is a total dream to photograph, let alone just watch.

What happens at Baloney usually stays there, but here are some of my favorite moments I’ve shot from Baloney shows both past and present:

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 423

May 16th, 2016 by Karen 56 Comments

monday-poll-may-16-2016

You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”

Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past eight (!) years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.

  1. When was the last time you went all out with your makeup?
I think it’s been about two weeks… Or has it been three? Funny how time gets all mushy when you’re doing hard time in baby jail.

I did a bright blue lid with warm browns in the crease. Foundation, concealer, brows, lashes and lips (frame the face!). It was the most elaborate eye makeup I’d worn since pre-Connor.

I didn’t recognize myself in the mirror either. I was like, that can’t be me because she doesn’t look like a freshly turned zombie (it was me though).

  2. What was the last goofy thing you did?
Dude! Every single day of my life is a series of goofy things strewn together one after another! The last one involved a song which I sang to Connor while I changed her diaper. It included various silly references to poop.
  3. When was the last time you checked a social network, and which one was it?
It was Facebook about 20 minutes ago. I watched a video about how people don’t interact with each other as much anymore due to smartphones…and then I thought about how funny it would be to be watching this video on my phone in a public place while not interacting with anybody. 🙂
  4. How do you feel about full-coverage foundation?
Different now than I did a few months ago. I think full coverage looks great in photographs, and I like to wear full coverage for pics, but it’s a lot of look for everyday life. At least, lately for me, but this has been a relatively recent development. I haven’t been wearing a lot of makeup lately, and I’ve started getting accustomed to seeing myself without it.

Even so, in the times I have put on a little extra makeup over the past few weeks, I felt like I was wearing a ton.

Does that make any sense at all?

Anyway, I go through phases like this every once in a while. They usually last a few months, and then I’m back to doing the full-coverage thing.

  5. Should you trust your instincts?
Yes, always! Because whenever my gut is telling me to do something, or not do something, and I don’t go with my gut, it always comes back to bite me in the butt.

    Your gut knows… That’s all I’m saying.

monday-poll-le-list-spring-2016

Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!

1. When was the last time you went all out with your makeup?
2. What was the last goofy thing you did?
3. When was the last time you checked an online social network and which one was it?
4. How do you feel about full-coverage foundation?
5. Should you trust your instincts?

Have a wonderful week, my friend. May fortune smile upon you.

Karen

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 398

May 15th, 2016 by Karen 40 Comments

A Love Letter to My Cat (yes, you read that correctly)

Dear Tabs,

Hello, my sweet kitty friend. I know that even though we see each other every day (as we have for pretty much the past 10 years), things haven’t been the same lately, now that you’re a “big brother” to baby Connor Claire.

tabs-watching-connor

It probably seems like she’s always in my arms, or on my lap, or somehow otherwise up in the mix, and that when you try to snuggle with me (like the time she was breastfeeding and you tried to sneak onto my lap to make biscuits), it seems grossly unfair when I say, “No, Tabs, not now.”

I see you slinking away, sadly. I hear your tiny kitty sighs and meows.

tabs-bed

Honestly, I can’t blame you. Things have changed a lot over the past two months, both for you and for me, more than they have in the previous nine years we’ve spent together. It’s been quite a shock to both of our systems.

But I wanted you to know that even though our familiar daily (and nightly) patterns have changed, you’re still my special tabby baby boy, and now I cherish the quiet moments we have together even more, when it’s just you and me again, like last night, when I woke up at 3 and saw you curled up next to me, sleeping soundly.

tabs-corner

Or, right now as I’m typing this with you napping in the corner next to my chair, and with me at the keyboard tap-tap-tapping away. How many hours have we spent just like this, my sweet friend? Hundreds? Thousands? I know that soon you’ll wake up, hop up on my desk, and rub your cheeks against my face before draping your body across my left forearm as I continue to type. You’ll start to purr and stare out the window and occasionally blink contendedly.

So…Tabs has been all about his new employee’s Fisher-Price Rainforest Melodies and Lights Deluxe Gym lately, even though I keep shooing him away from it because I don’t want him tearing it apart.
