By Terry Baume de Rose Nutri-Couleur Luxe Tinted Lip Balm in Mauve Moon and Corail Stellar

To me, few brands are more chic than By Terry. I’ve adored the unquestionably luxe line since the first time I spotted the brand while living in Paris. I still remember the thrill I got from splurging on my very first tub of Baume de Rose lip balm… How decadent it was! The rich, soothing cream never left my college purse until I’d used every last bit on my dry patches, cuticles and, of course, lips.

Later a good friend sent me Or de Rose, a golden shimmering take on the original, except with rose gold packaging, and I am still scraping to get out every last drop.

I jumped for joy and nostalgic excitement when, this past year, By Terry released Baume de Rose Nutri-Couleur, a tinted version of her precious cult classic in a range of shades from berries to classic cherry reds and deep maroons.

For spring 2016, By Terry has added two new shades — Mauve Moon and Corail Stellar ($56 each) — the first in the line to contain subtle shimmer, and they’re just as stunning as their predecessors.

As a dry-lipped lass, I really appreciate the tinted take on By Terry’s classic lip balm formula, which I clearly love, as I’ve nearly demolished two pots of the original and two pots of the golden shimmering version, and Baume de Rose Nutri-Couleur easily lives up to the classic’s standard.

“The much-loved lip balm has now been given the Rose Infernale full-color treatment. This eye-popping palette ranges from chic and cheerful to innocent hushed hues and whimsical high-drama. The ever-luxurious formula pampers and soothes with softening rose flower essential wax, lipo-regenerating shea butter, free radical fighting vitamin E, restructuring ceramides, hydrating and smoothing filling spheres. Lips will lap up this deep-down long-lasting cure.”

Just as rich and moisturizing as the untinted version, the tinted rendition also has a wonderful rosy garden scent, which smells like real life roses and green stems.

I adore it but, as a word to the wise, if you’re sensitive to scented lip products, you may want to reconsider, as the rosy scent lingers on lips for a while.

Unsung Makeup Heroes: Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso

May 9th, 2016 by Nicole Fraser-Herron 33 Comments

Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso
Wearing Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso

The long-running Unsung Heroes series here on Makeup and Beauty Blog features some of our all-time favorite permanent collection products.

Blush was the last, most recent category of makeup I got into, because I’m really fair, and while I’d say that my skin tone is generally more neutral, I do still get rosy. Since I thought that the point of foundation was to even out your skin tone, and getting rosy plays into that, I guess I just figured that blush was sort of a contradiction and would work against my efforts.

So I rocked a pale face for a long time. Then, well, I found Luminoso.

I’m pretty sure it was the first blush I ever tried, too, and what a good choice it was. It’s not just pink, and it’s not just peach. I feel like it’s the color that was meant to be there, like its found a home on my face.

Milani’s baked blushes are wonderful, and they’re not just good for the price (around 7 bucks). They’re good across the board.

I feel like Luminoso, especially, is kind of a one-stop shop. It isn’t matte, and it isn’t overly sparkly. It’s just a healthy peachy glow with a slight and very fine white/gold glow.

I think it looks phenomenal with, like, a really flawless base down, a strong brow, loads of mascara, and a classic red lip. Luminoso just like brings it all together.

Bolder lipstick shades wash you out pretty instantly, and Luminoso brings the life back into my cheeks.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 422

May 9th, 2016 by Karen 67 Comments

050916-monday-poll-final

You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”

Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past eight (!) years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.

  1. Is there currently anything missing from your makeup life?
Yes, ma’am! A creamy, comfortable white pencil liner that I could wear along my lower water line — one that would stay in place all day long.

Oh, and it can’t pick up any black or gray from my upper lash line when I blink (which, I know, is probably an impossible request, but I want it anyway).

Right now I’m using MAC Eye Kohl in Fascinating, and it’s got the creamy, comfy part down (also doesn’t irritate my sensitive eyes), but I still have to reapply it every few hours…

  2. How well do you handle rejection?
I think I handle it OK… I mean, nobody’s ever super awesomely overjoyed when they get rejected for something, right? But I can usually get past it and focus on what needs to get done (usually).
  3. What time did you get to bed last night?
Between 10:30 and 11. Connor Claire was having what I call a “high needs evening” (translation: she was very fussy and crying), and it took a couple hours of high-intensity soothing to get her to sleep.

She was pretty good, though, after that. I only got up once at 3:30 to feed her, and then she went back to sleep from 4:30 to 6.

  4. What’s your favorite accessory?
Right now I’m (still) all about this branch necklace El Hub got me for Valentine’s Day.

I like that it’s a little unusual, and it goes with just about everything I ever wear. And I can layer it with longer necklaces, too, which is nice!

  5. What was the last meal someone cooked for you?
My parents came over yesterday and brought enough food to feed a high school marching band! I’m not even kitten you; it was a TON of food. Among other things, my mom brought a huge tub of pancit, which is this yummy Filipino noodle dish.

I ended up giving most of it away to my neighbors, because there was just too much for us, and we still have leftovers.

Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!

Hey, hey! Happy Monday, friend. Did you have a good weekend? What are you doing right now?

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 397

May 8th, 2016 by Karen 17 Comments

tabs-cat-small-business-juice-bar-7

Weekend salutations to all my frenemies, friends, fans and health fiends. Oh! — and yeah, happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there. I hope you’ve all been having a wonderful Sunday. Mine has been great so far. I’ve been hard at work all day long. To that, most people would probably say, “Well, shoot, Tabs, that sucks.” But not me. I’m a mover and a shaker, even on holidays, and I’m very excited about my latest business venture, a juice bar dedicated to health conscious cats.

Oh, sure, Marin County’s got plenty of juice bars. I’ve walked by several that charge a staggering $15 per juice, but we’re gonna undercut all of them by serving premium organic, locally sourced ingredients (i.e. grown on my back deck) and affordable juices that are the freshest imaginable.

I should know; I oversee all operations from top to bottom. Since the business is just getting started, my employees worked today as well.

To convey my authority, I wore my business casual outfit — you know, to show em who’s boss, while at the same time projecting an air of approachability. I’m a very paws-on employer with all of my business ventures. I’m not the type of cat who just sits behind a desk.

** THE GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED **

This giveaway is closed, and the winner has been contacted (CONGRATULATIONS, EMILY!!!), but check back next Saturday for another giveaway.

sephora-giveaway-pic-050716

Rise and shine, pal o’ mine! Good morning! Happy Caturday. I hope you slept well.

I did. The baby slept for — get this — seven hours straight! I think that’s the longest stretch yet. She’s becoming a good sleeper (*knocks on wood*). I hope it lasts.

Do you have any plans for Mother’s Day? Brunch? I think we’ll stay home, probably. Maybe El Hub will make breakfast. 🙂 We’re still not really going out together very often because, you know, it’s still a little tough. Connor’s baby patience wears thin after about an hour, and it’s nice to be close to home when the fussiness starts…

How’s everything with you? What have you been up to this spring? How’s work? How’s the family? It’s been wonderful having the interns help with their great posts here on the blog (thank you, ladies!), but I don’t get to check in as often as I’d like. I read every single post and every one of your comments, but I don’t spend 10 hours online like I normally would/used to.

I’ve been slowly easing my way back into blogging… Or, rather, Chanel started pulling me back into blogging, because it’s just too damned gorgeous to deny, but I’m still officially on my maternity leave. Maybe another month or so.

Let me know how you’ve been doing and what’s new with you. Happy Mother’s Day tomorrow. Good luck in the giveaway.

A Rockabilly Winged Liner Look: This Eye Look’s Mine, So I Walk the Line

May 6th, 2016 by Jessica Revitte 18 Comments

Rockabilly Winged Liner
I “walk the line” with my go-to Rockabilly Wing!

You know I love makeup (duh), but what you may not know about me is that I’ve always been into the rockabilly/psychobilly music scene.

Everybody luuurves Johnny Cash, but I also adore Empress of Fur, the Nekromantix and Tiger Army. Sadly, 1950s-inspired hairstyles and outfits are challenging to keep up with on the day-to-day, especially as a professional and a mom, so I most often indulge my affinity for this “look” by applying a nice big winged cat eye.

When Nicole and I talked about teaming up to show you our tips, tricks and techniques for all things “cat eye,” I immediately knew what I wanted to feature: my go-to Rockabilly Wing! Long before I started my own blog or possessed more makeup than I could choose from on a daily basis, I always had a good black liner in my collection to rock this look quite literally every day.

My arsenal of “tools” has grown exponentially, but somehow I can’t quit this classic.

Grab your favorite liners, put on your favorite vinyl and get ready! 🙂 I’m going to show you how to Walk the Line.

I keep a close watch on this wing of mine,

I keep my cat eye flicked out all the time,

I pick a long lasting liner formula to bind,

This eye look’s mine…so I walk the line.

How I Rock Pink Eyeshadow (A Collaboration With Jen and Adia)

May 6th, 2016 by Anna Oh 17 Comments

Wearing Ardency Inn Rose Gold Eyeshadow, Becca Rose Gold Pressed Eyeshadow, and MAC Finally Free Lipstick

A friend and I recently had a photography date in a charming neighborhood, snacking on amazing salted caramel “cake” donuts (they are as good as they sound). It was a picture perfect weekend, so I decided to take advantage of the amazing weather to wear pink.

This week Jen, Adia and I are showcasing our favorite way to rock pink eyeshadow, and I call this look “Rose Gold Eyeshadow for a Day of Donuts and Photoshoots.”

Here are a few of my favorite pink-toned pieces…

Urban Decay Naked 3. I used this palette to blend

What I used:

  • Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer ($29): I have the shade called Honey, and I’m joining the bandwagon… It’s an awesome concealer. I use it to target my problem areas, and I can skip the foundation step on good days.
  • MAC Charged Black Mineralize Multi-Effect Lash ($22): From the MAC Future Collection, this mascara is lightweight and lengthening. No crazy volume here. but I have been using this for weeks.
  • Kat Von D Tattoo Liner ($19): There are 2 types of people in this world — those who love the Tattoo Liner, and those who prefer the Ink Liner. I always come back to the Tattoo because I love the flexible soft brush pen.
  • MAC x Caitlyn Jenner Finally Free Lipstick ($17): This is with me in my minimal makeup bag, and I can’t recommend this color enough. SO pretty and perfect. I didn’t re-apply after the donuts, though, so it’s not present in the outdoor images.
  • Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed ($38): As the only Shimmering Skin Perfector I own, this deserves a special place on my vanity. Rose Gold is a highlighting blush or a blush-topper for the lighter skinned girls.
  • Ardency Inn Modster Manuka Honey Enriched Pigments ($21): The star of my look, Rose Gold is the creamiest, most nuanced rose-taupe eyeshadow I’ve seen. A perfect pick for anyone interested in getting into pinks.
  • Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette ($54): I use the darker shades in this palette constantly for many of my looks. They blend perfectly, and I love the matte colors in particular. I used some of the darker shades to quickly shade in my eyebrows too.

Does Too Faced Shadow Insurance Really Work?

May 6th, 2016 by Jen Clark 18 Comments

Too Faced Shadow Insurance
Too Faced Shadow Insurance eye shadow primer ($20)

I have been cursed with an annoying curse — oily eyelids. This basically makes it impossible for my eye shadows to look the same at the end of the day as they look when I put them on, and who wants to spend precious time blending away till your arm falls off when you know it’s just going to look like you sprayed Pam all over your eyelids a couple of hours later!

Eye shadow primers to the rescue! Too Faced Shadow Insurance is what’s on trial today.

I am so happy with this primer! It pretty much does just what it’s supposed to do, and I want to show you up close and personal.

For this test, I only applied the primer to one eye, and then I left my makeup on as long as I could stand it, which ended up being about 8 hours.

I don’t really notice a difference in how my eye shadows apply with this primer. They go on exactly the same as they do when I’m not using primer at all. Sometimes, with some primers, your shadows can go on a little smoother, or even sometimes a little chunkier, but that’s not the case with Shadow Insurance for me.
