Charlotte Tilbury Magic Foundation: Hallelujah for This Hocus Pocus!

April 26th, 2016 by Jessica Revitte 31 Comments

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Foundation
The spell has been cast! Wearing Charlotte Tilbury Magic Foundation in Shade 2 Fair ($44)

I’ve long been enamored with Charlotte Tilbury. The UK-based makeup artist exudes old Hollywood glamour, and her personally designed makeup collection is to die for.

Burgundy and rose gold packaging, names that evoked cosmetic legends and breathtaking hues… For months I agonized over what to buy. Did I want to test a shadow palette first? What about a lipstick? And why was the gorgeous Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds gloss already sold out? Each time I thought I’d made a decision, my mind was promptly changed by another more beautiful item.

But, as I’ve mentioned several times, my head can always be turned by a good foundation, and turned, it was, when a buzz built into a roar over the new Charlotte Tilbury Magic Foundation.

The care a brand takes in formulating and marketing a base product says a lot to me. Foundations and concealers are often overlooked in favor of more exciting, colorful products like eye shadow, blush and lipstick, so when a foundation, of all things, generates this kind of fuss, I knew I had to have it.

While not quite as costly as some high-end foundations, Magic Foundation is no less luxurious at $44 per fluid ounce, but despite the price, it’s hard to resist the allure when this is how Charlotte describes this bewitchment in a bottle…

“My Magic Foundation is a miracle in a bottle that transforms skin for all ages, skin tones and skin types. I have worked with laboratories for five years to create a “hyper-intelligent” formula that gives full-coverage yet feels completely weightless, with all the anti-aging and protective benefits of a luxury skin cream. It conceals imperfections, glides on like a dream, and literally feels like a second skin. Whether your skin needs just a bit of perfecting, or you struggle with a frustrating issue like acne, melasma or rosacea, my Magic Foundation will give you a perfect looking skin day, every day!”

— charlottetilbury.com

Given the buzz, I bet you’re wondering what to expect.

Magic Foundation promises a laundry list of beauty advantages, like universality (regardless of age, skin type, or condition), weightlessness, anti-aging benefits, imperfection concealment, glide-on texture — the list goes on!

And if those weren’t enough, Charlotte’s YouTube page also features several tutorials of the makeup artist concealing a variety of skin concerns with Magic Foundation alone. It’s hard not to feel like a moth to a flame with that promise and potential!

I’ve said before that I’m a tinted moisturizer girl, but even though Magic Foundation provides full coverage…it doesn’t feel like full coverage, so I’m going to say what many makeup lovers have already said before: this literally feels like my skin alone.

I have some dry areas on my face, and Magic Foundation doesn’t cling. Even after a long day, Magic Foundation doesn’t need to be touched up. I often wear several concealers, but when applied and set right, Magic Foundation conceals everything for me. It’s like an eerily perfect boyfriend… You keep searching for something wrong, but he’s always bringing you flowers and grande lattes!

I Hung Out With James Vincent and All I Got Was This Brush Set*

April 26th, 2016 by Nicole Fraser-Herron 29 Comments

James Vincent x LBC
James Vincent x London Brush Company

I was oohing and ahhing over pots of glitter when I felt someone tap my shoulder. I turned around to see James Vincent smiling at me saying, “Hi, Nicole.”

A mutual friend introduced us. I have long since admired James Vincent, but meeting him in person, artist to artist, was so wonderful. I met him at The Makeup Show in San Francisco last year. If you aren’t familiar with The Makeup Show, it’s a pro-focused beauty convention that travels the US every year. Bigger brands and smaller local brands attend, and you can find tons of goodies at a pro rate. They also have classes! I could listen to James Vincent teach for hooooours. And I did.

When I met him, he told me about this brush collection from the London Brush Company (it looks like they’re sold out as of right now), and I obviously needed it. The brushes are vegan Mongoose hair, and very simple in design with only James Vincent and London Brush Company on the ferrule. They’re very soft, and very versatile.

Let’s break it down: there are 3 pyramid brushes and two bent ones.

James Vincent x LBC
James Vincent x London Brush Company Pyramid Blender Brush

The biggest pyramid brush works for so many base products. That’s something I LOVE about LBC — the multitude of uses a single brush is made to have. I’ve used this brush for moisturizer, primer, foundation, setting powder, and contour. It’s bloody brilliant. The fine point makes it easy to get in there and contour precisely and the pyramid angle helps blend it out. It applies powder so easily with not too much product (I’ve been using it with the Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder and the Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder).

The next two pyramid brushes I’ve been using mostly as eye brushes, but also for contouring my nose (which I don’t do often, but it helps in photos and when I’m hanging out with drag queens and feel under…painted). Again, this pyramid thing is bloody brilliant. Apply with the tip, blend with the edges. It also makes crease work so damn easy because the flat part of the triangle sort of blocks pigment from blending down onto your mobile lid. Brilliant I tell you.

When Doing Your Makeup, Do You Reach More Often for Cream or Powder Formulas?

April 26th, 2016 by Carolina Braina 23 Comments

Cream makeup products

Hmm… If you’d asked me a few months ago, I would have definitely replied “powder”. You know, as someone with oily skin, for years I thought that using powder products for my base was the right thing to do. God knows how many pans of Shiseido Pureness foundation I went through in my late teens and early twenties…

Then I moved on to liquid foundations and never really looked back. I still kept using mainly powder bronzers and blushes, though, more out of habit than anything else. But over the last few weeks, I’ve been obsessed with achieving the most natural-looking base as possible, one that would be undetectable on the skin even when using a magnifying mirror.

Well, I’m happy to report that I’ve found the perfect product combination for that, and they’re all cream or liquid formulas.

Cream Makeup Products

Primer: Since these days I only powder the areas I conceal, I find that using a mattifying primer helps my foundation stay put longer, so the Make Up For Ever Step1 Skin Equalizer Mattifying Primer has earned itself a premium spot in my everyday makeup bag.

Foundation: My most recent base product crush is the La Roche-Posay Effaclar BB Blur. You may read all about it here, but basically it’s a silicone-based BB mousse that is AMAZING at minimizing pores and fine lines while blurring the look of imperfections. AND it doesn’t require powdering.

Bronzer: My favorite bronzer at the moment is yet another blurring product, and it comes in the form of the YSL Les Sahariennes Sun-Kissed Blur Perfector. It’s a balm-to-powder formula that melts into the skin and makes you look like you’re glowing from within. I apply it all over my face and neck, focusing on the areas that tan first, and it gives me the most subtle, natural-looking radiance. I just can’t get enough of it!

Blush: The Chanel Le Blush Crème de Chanel is my all-time favorite cream blush formula, but sadly it seems to have been discontinued. The shade I’ve used today is Affinité, a beautiful cool-toned pink with a satin finish that lasts way longer on my oily skin than any powder blush I’ve ever tried.

Highlighter: As a finishing touch, I like to dab a couple of drops of the Revlon Photoready Skinlights in 100 Bare Light on my cheekbones. Again, the result is pretty subtle, but in real life you can definitely see a juicy sheen whenever the light hits the area.

The Incredible NARS Under Cover Summer 2016 Collection Dual-Intensity Eyeshadows!

April 25th, 2016 by Adia Goss 25 Comments

nars under cover dual intensity eyeshadows
I’m still in love with the packaging…

Have you seen the four new Dual-Intensity Eyeshadows in the NARS Under Cover Summer 2016 Collection yet? They are incredible! I REALLY love the finish, because the shimmer is so soft, and they’re so crazy pigmented, that the fact that they’re also versatile and can be worn wet or dry is icing on the cake. You can use a fluffy brush to get just a wash of color, or you can dampen your brush and layer the colors to get more intensity.

Starting with Topless, a light seashell pink — I’m glad NARS included it, because it balances nicely with the bolder colors in the collection.

As for rich neutral brown Tan Lines, it’s neither too warm nor bronzey, but it doesn’t turn gray either, so I think it’s a great eyeshadow color, especially if you’re looking for a rich brown. The shimmer keeps it from being too plain.

And then there’s shimmering teal green Deep End — gorgeous! It reminds me of the waters off a tropical island! I mean, it’s not a color that I tend to wear…but it’s so beautiful.

Lastly, Pool Shark. It’s an iridescent blue with lots of purple shimmer, and it looks mostly blue in the pan, but as you can see in the pictures below, there’s also a lot of purple in it. It’s a really unique color, and I think you can get it to look more blue or purple, depending on how you wear it. I love colors like this because they always look a little different when you wear them!

Here’s a closer look at these stunning eyeshadows:

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 420

April 25th, 2016 by Karen 37 Comments

monday poll 042516
Have a peaceful Monday

You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”

Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past eight (!) years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.

  1. Can’t stop/won’t stop! What beauty products are you guilty of hoarding?
GURL, you know I love me some foundation. I’ve got a drawer full of them because I fall in love with a new one every five minutes, LOL! (It’s so true, though.) I also stockpile lipsticks, nail polishes, body lotion and perfume.
  2. What’s your favorite thing to do on Sunday morning?
Sleep in as late as I want, and then have a leisurely breakfast (ideally, made by someone else!) and sit on the couch and watch TV or read in my jammies for a couple of hours.

Mind you, right now with the baby it feels like this is never, ever going to happen again, but I’m holding out hope…

  3. What are three makeup-related things you need/want?
    Mostly, I need errrday basics…

    1. A new pan of MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural face powder in Medium Tan (I’m just about done with mine)
    2. A stick of Urban Decay Brow Beater (I can’t find mine, and it’s breaking my heart into a million little pieces, WAH!)
    3. A lengthening mascara with killer curl hold, but I’m not sure which one… Ever since I gave birth, the lash situation has been dire, man. I don’t know what happened, but my lashes are even shorter now and absolutely will not hold a curl! If you have a recommendation, please let me know.
  4. Who always calls at the most innopportune moments?
My mom! I always love hearing from her, but she has an uncanny ability to call right as I’m about to fall asleep, or when I’m in the shower, or when I’m cleaning the bathroom, or when I’m almost to the front of the checkout line at Trader Joe’s, or when the baby’s feeding and my phone is somewhere on the other side of the house.
  5. When was the last time you felt on top of the world?
This morning when Connor opened her eyes, smiled from ear to ear and made cooing noises when I picked her up and held her in my arms. It made my heart sing!

I know, I’m such a cheeseball! But it was a great feeling.

Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!

Dear Diary,

You’ll never guess what happened! I was going through one of my boxes of kitty modeling mementos when I found a treasure trove of modeling pictures from some of the old editorial and print campaigns I worked on. I totally forgot about these!

I’m going through and picking out my favorites to add to my portfolio.

Leave a Comment for a Chance to Win a $50 Sephora E-GIFT CARD! (Ends Monday)

April 23rd, 2016 by Karen 327 Comments

** THE GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED **

This giveaway is closed, and the winner has been contacted (CONGRATULATIONS, MARIA!!!), but check back next Saturday for another giveaway.

Win a $50 Sephora e-gift card!
Win a $50 Sephora e-gift card!

I actually have to wash my makeup brushes today because I haven’t washed them since before I left for the hospital seven weeks ago.

[WOW!]

Yeah! But I haven’t been wearing a lot of makeup, and it’s weird — when you don’t wear a lot, you kind of get used to it. I mean, the other day I did full-on makeup, like foundation, concealer, brows, eyes, cheeks, lips — the whole kit and caboodle — and when I looked in the mirror, I was just like, “Who is this girl?”

Maybe I’m just used to seeing myself looking really tired…

Today I wanted to try another look with the Chanel Summer 2016 collection I mentioned yesterday. I’ve used all of the products so far, but there’s a green eyeshadow in the eyeshadow quad I really want to play with.

Also, in baby-related stuff, because a baby runs my life these days, I need to figure out how to collapse her stroller so I can get it in and out of my Mazda. And unlike my dad and my husband, I will actually read the instruction booklet instead of standing there for two hours grumbling, “I can’t figure this thing out!”

I do also plan to do some weekend-y stuff, like maybe rent a movie and leave the house at some point… Whatever you’re doing, I hope it’s fun. Good luck in the giveaway. 🙂
