Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 414

March 14th, 2016 by Karen 30 Comments

mbb-monday-poll-march-2016

You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”

Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.

  1. What’s your current favorite lip product?
I picked up a YSL Volupté Tint-In-Oil in Peach Me Love 6 from Sephora right before Connor Claire was born, and it’s been the only makeup I’ve really been wearing lately, first, because I like it, and second, because it’s what I’ve had on my little nursing table next to me, and I haven’t had the time or energy to swap it for anything else, let alone put on any more makeup…or shower for that matter.

It’s this, like, non-sticky, super moisturizing light lip oil/tint, and it smells like yummy apples.

  2. Do you use a lot of slang?
    Yo, dawg! I use a little, but I can’t say I use a lot. 🙂

I feel like I’m getting to that stage in life where if I try too hard to use the current slang, I’m like that aunt who’s trying to be hip, but is, like, so not hip.

There are some words I can’t stop using, like “hella” and “stoked” and “guuuurl” that I’ve been using for years, but I haven’t been able to smoothly incorporate words like “bae” and “slay…”

And I totally didn’t mean to make those rhyme, haha.

So, yeah…I use a little slang, but not a lot.

  3. What’s a beauty-related service or treatment you’d like to try?
Well, I saw this thing in the April issue of Glamour called a lash lift, and I’m very, very intrigued. It’s done at a beauty salon, and what they do is curl your existing lashes and lift them from the root. Then they hold them in place with, like, a special serum so that your lashes look lifted and curled. The process takes about 20 minutes, costs about $100 and the effect lasts about a month. So for that one month, you don’t have to curl your lashes.

Now, this for me? I have stick straight lashes, and the idea of being able to skip my lash curler is super appealing. Plus, something happened when I got pregnant, and I don’t know if it has quite gone away yet, but my lashes got really hard to curl for some reason. They’re stiffer and perfectly straight, so I like the sound of this service.

  4. Do you change your hairstyle often, or do you tend to stay with the style you have now?
Normally I do like to change my hairstyles a lot, but I haven’t really left the house in two weeks on account of being in “temporary baby jail,” so lately, my main hairstyle has been a messy bun.
  5. What’s a trait you greatly value in your friends?
Empathy. I like being surrounded by people who get it, you know? Who can feel my pain and my joy and my fears and understand what I’m going through when I’m going through something, and I can understand what they’re going through, too.

I think I’m a pretty empathetic person, and I’m drawn to people like that. I also like people with a similar sense of humor.

  6. A place you haven’t been but would like to go?
Bora Bora. I’ve seen pictures of the Four Seasons resort there, and not that I’ll ever be able to afford to go, but I’d love to stay at that hotel. They have these huts right out over the water, and when you look down through the floorboards, you can actually see the ocean under you.

I don’t know, but I think that would be really cool, and I love tropical places and places with warm, clear water.

Le List

Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!

Hello, my friend. I hope you’re having a great Monday so far. I’m holding down the fort here in temporary baby jail, trying to sneak in a nap and a shower every once in a while. Overall, I’m basically unbearably tired…but I think things are going pretty well. I think. This is week two.

Some Weekday Glitter Featuring the New Shiseido Synchro Skin Foundation

March 14th, 2016 by Anna Oh 23 Comments

It’s all about the eyes! Glitter eyes

Hi everyone!

The other day I was having coffee with a few girlfriends — probably the BEST time to get makeup inspiration — and I fell in love with one of my friends’ pretty glittery eyeliner. I tried it out myself and found it to be an awesome way to pull off a little glitter during the day. I call it a “weekday glitter” look, and I hope you’ll be into it as much as I’ve been!

One of the key components to this look is nice and even skin tone. I used the new Shiseido Synchro Skin Foundation ($45 for 1oz) in a custom mixture of Golden 2 and Neutral 3. The foundation comes in Golden, Neutral, and Rose undertones ranging between 1 and 5. For some reason, the range isn’t complete, but we will probably find more colors coming with demand.

Dear Diary,

Jiminy Cricket, Diary, I’m exhausted! I’m not kidding. The new hire has been putting in a ton of overtime, and it’s digging into my precious nap time. She’s always at the office. I mean, I like working the night shift, but she really likes working the night shift.

I’ve tried to tell her to clock out and go home, but we’re having communication issues. It’s like we’re speaking different languages.

Even when I can sneak away for a nap, I can’t sleep long because there’s just so much noise in the office.

I thought a new mattress would help, but it really hasn’t…

I’ve also tried warm milk.

And I read once that a good way to get sleepy for bed is to read something boring, so I tried that, but now all I want to do is upgrade my tabby command center. I’m thinking about adding a rooftop catnip garden…

sephora-giveaway-march-12-2016

Top o’ the mornin’ to ya! Rise and shine, pal o’ mine. Happy Caturday!

Question for you: when will it stop raining? That’s what I’d like to know. We’ve gotten so much rain this week that the neighborhood is greener than I’ve seen it in years. There’s stuff blooming out there that doesn’t usually bloom here, like, get this: about a month ago I was about to throw out a few potatoes that had started to sprout in their bag in the kitchen, but El Hub said, “No! I want to plant them outside…”

And, you know, that was weird, but boys will be boys, so I said “Um…OK?”

Anyway, he took them outside and buried them somewhere…

I come to find out yesterday that they’re growing huge! So now we have potatoes growing in our front yard. If this had been another year, like last year, I don’t think that would have happened, because I can’t remember it raining once all through last February or March.

In other news, Happy St. Patrick’s Day week! 🙂 Will you be having green beer? If you are, please have a sip for Connor Claire, who happens to be one eighth Irish.

Must-Have Moisturizing Products

March 11th, 2016 by Adia Goss 26 Comments

must have moisturizing products

I have combination skin, and I LOVE pampering it with all kinds of moisturizing serums, potions and masks. I’ve found that keeping my skin moisturized is the best way to keep it happy and avoid minor irritations and redness (my skin is also pretty sensitive, lucky me!).

Even though we don’t really experience severe winter weather in the Bay Area, thanks to indoor heating and cooler temperatures, I still load up on moisturizers, and these are my current favorites for keeping my skin moisturized and soft:

moisturizing products

My nighttime skincare routine is sort of long, but I love it. I turn it into a mini pampering session, and I’ll double-cleanse, tone, add a serum, then a moisturizer, then a facial oil…and this is on my “low key” nights!

Lately, I’ve been using Murad Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture at night (you can check out my nighttime skincare routine here). It’s packed with avocado, sunflower and olive oils, and even though it also has shea butter, it somehow manages to feel light. I’ve only been using it for a couple of weeks, but my skin feels really soft and plump in the morning after I use it. I’ve noticed no irritation, either, so this is a definite winner. It’s available now at Sephora for $72.

A High Brow Collection: MAC Brows Are It!

March 11th, 2016 by Jessica Revitte 21 Comments

MAC Brows Are It
Loving the fact that (MAC) “Brows Are It!”

One of my favorite things about being a makeup devotee is watching trends come and go, and I’m sure that fashion lovers feel the same flash of nostalgia when they see ‘90s styles come back in vogue that those of us who love all things makeup feel when brown lips make a comeback and are bigger than ever.

But even though I love following the trends, I’m not one for hopping on bandwagons all too often. Contouring? Only if it’s subtle. Strobing? I thought I was already highlighting — what’s different? I’m confused…

I’ll be honest with you ladies (and gentlemen), that’s why I am SO excited that brows are having their moment again. As a child, my grandmother praised my thick, arched brows and told me never to pluck them. So I didn’t (I listened to her), and though brow fashions have waned and waxed from thin back to thick, my brows have remained my own.

The MAC Brows Are It! collection is the brow collection for those who are proud of their brows, whether bold and defined or soft and natural. Whatever your outlook on brows, this collection has something for everyone!

MAC Brows Are It
The MAC Brows Are It! collection

The MAC Brows Are It! collection includes a wide breadth of products to help you create just about any brow look, in almost any natural shade imaginable. MAC’s website offers product breakdowns on different looks and recommends which of the many products released with the collection would work best for your personal preference.

Many Things in Life — Including Your Makeup Game — Can Benefit From a Different Angle

March 11th, 2016 by Carolina Braina 26 Comments

Bologna Asinelli Tower
Torre degli Asinelli, Bologna’s tallest medieval tower, as seen from two different angles

“To raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a new angle, requires creative imagination and marks real advance in science beauty”. — Albert Einstein

Sorry, Bertie, I hope you’re not turning in your grave. But, you know, your quote can totally apply to any field — including beauty.

You really were a genius, after all…

Yes, because regarding problems from new angles is a great way to go, I think. If you’re stuck seeing things from a single point of view, you’ll never grow nor improve and, most importantly, you’ll never solve your most troublesome makeup problems (HA!), like:

  • Does applying eyeliner to your waterline bother you?
  • Do your filled in brows look like illustrations in a coloring book (that is, like a solid block of color)?
  • When you apply lip liner all over your lips, does it feel scratchy and uncomfortable? And does it look uneven?

If you answered yes to any of the above, today’s your lucky day, because we’re about to solve your problems!

YOU JUST NEED TO CHANGE YOUR ANGLE. *Cue heavenly choir and rays of glorious sunlight.*

More specifically, you need to change the angle of your pencil. Next time you do your makeup and you’re using a pencil product, try angling it so that you’re using the side of the tip, rather than the point.

It’ll be life-changing, I promise.

How to Apply Eyeliner to Waterline
No more tingly feeling! And you can do this on the upper waterline, as well.

How to Apply Brow Pencil
Harsh brows, begone! Especially if you have dark brows, using the point of your pencil can easily make them look too strong.

Get Clearer Skin in 5 Steps With Pixi

March 10th, 2016 by Jen Clark 34 Comments

IMG_6070

I chase clear skin like I chase the donut food truck. Having the best skin possible is super important to me, as I’m sure it is for you too!

Weirdly enough, I’ve had way more skin issues in my 20s than I did in my high school years. Maybe that’s a blessing, because now I have the patience to experiment with different concoctions to find the best products and routines for my skin, and as of this moment, I think I’ve found it.

I’ve been using this routine now for several weeks and have been so happy with how my skin has been acting. In case you haven’t noticed yet, I use mostly Pixi, along with a lovely little Elizabeth Arden serum.

Let me take you through my skin care routine, which I follow morning and night…

Step 1: Cleanse

Keeping your skin clean is so important. Removing your makeup and the nastiness of the day from your pores will help keep the breakouts away.

First, splash your skin with warm water to open up those pores, and then work Pixi Glow Mud Cleanser into your skin. It’s a delicious recipe for clear skin packed with yummy ingredients like glycolic acid, hyaluronic acid, and aloe vera.

IMG_6077

Step 2: Mud mask

This step, you only want to do two or three times a week. Shmear the Pixi Glow Mud Mask all over you face, and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. The rich mask is loaded with minerals to draw out excess oil and impurities from your skin. You can see all of the crud it pulled out of my pores!

So satisfying…

IMG_5951

IMG_5958

Step 3: Toner

Toner is a step that a lot of people feel is unnecessary, but I don’t think so at all. You need a toner, and let me tell you why. Toner helps to balance the PH level of your skin, meaning that, depending on your skin type, it’ll prompt your skin to produce either more or less oil on its own, whatever it needs.

Pixi Glow Tonic is the best toner I have EV-AR used. I don’t know how it does what it does, but it has reduced redness and breakouts in my skin more than any other product ever has. You have to try this one.
