NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint SPF 30 in Action!

January 8th, 2016 by Karen 22 Comments

There’s a video review in this post, but if it’s not appearing, you can click here to watch it on YouTube.

Well rock my world, why don’t you, NARS!? I’m officially in lurve with new NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint SPF 30, and because it helps sometimes to see a product in actual action (I got ‘chu, visual learners!), here’s a video showing it do some work.

For a while now I’ve been all about skin that still looks like skin, and this new NARS tinted moisturizer offers just that. It does many of the same things as the brand’s epic Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer (blurs pores, evens skin tone, looks HELLA natural), but instead of a dewy finish, the finish is matte.

If you want a full review (including swatches of all 12 shades), check it: NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint SPF 30 Makes Makeup Life Easier With Sheer, Natural Coverage.

How do you feel about NARS Pure Radiant, and, since we’re on the subject, how do you feel about tinted moisturizer in general? Inquiring minds want to know.

As always, thank you for watching!

Karen

Looking for Interns to Write for Makeup and Beauty Blog

January 8th, 2016 by Karen 53 Comments

MBB is hiring interns!
Looking for a few great interns…

Hey friends,

Are you (or is someone you know) looking to gain more beauty blogging and writing experience? I’m searching for 4-5 motivated, marvelous interns to write for Makeup and Beauty Blog while I go on maternity leave in late February through March, April and possibly early June. I’ll still be blogging and doing my thing, but I’ll also need some help.

What’s in it for you?

Your work will get published on MBB, so you’ll get online writing experience (if you’re planning to move into a career in beauty writing or online writing, this is a great way to build your resume and provide links to your work to potential employers), and if you currently have a blog, it’s a great opportunity to grow traffic to your site. I’ll also be happy to write you a glowing recommendation letter if you need a reference.

FYI: This is an unpaid internship; however, I will be able to pay you in product. I’ll send you beauty products to review, you’ll review them, and then you’ll get to keep them after you submit your review. You’ll be writing 3-5 reviews (or how-to posts, tutorials, looks or faces of the day) per week.

What I need from you…

If this sounds like something you might want to do, then please send the following to karen@makeupandbeautyblog.com by Friday, January 22:

  1. A resume highlighting relevant writing/photography/beauty blogging experience and a cover letter
  2. Writing and photography links or examples (it’s extremely important that you’re able to take good product pics, and, ideally, you’re comfortable showing your face on the blog)
  3. Any links you may have to previously published work in the beauty niche

I’m looking forward to hearing from you! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

The Urban Decay UD Gwen Stefani Lipsticks: Swatches!

January 7th, 2016 by Karen 30 Comments

The eight lipsticks from the new Urban Decay UD Gwen Stefani Collection ($18 each)

GIRL, you know I had to do it. You cannot put all of those juicy reds in front of a girl like me and NOT expect her to at least try on a couple (OK, all) of them.

Here’s the whole batch, swatches of all eight lipsticks from the new Urban Decay UD Gwen Stefani Collection ($18 each).

I have to say, a few of them have me seriously wowed — Firebird, 714, Rock Steady, Spider and Wonderland (basically, all of the opaque shades). They’re all gloriously intense, although, hello! — note to self: use them with their coordinating UD Gwen Stefani Lip Pencils next time, because getting those edges smooth was harder than herding cats.

The sheer shades (Ex-Girlfriend, Phone Call and Plaid) have a healthy dose of pigment (for sheers), but they end up showing off my lip flakie-flakes more than I’d like, and, yes, I’m still bummed about Ex-Girlfriend breaking in the tube. ?

Urban Decay UD Gwen Stefani Collection First Look and Swatches

January 7th, 2016 by Karen 38 Comments

ud gwen stefani collection
The Urban Decay UD Gwen Stefani Collection

Urban Decay UD Gwen StefaniI realize that the “L.A.M.B.” in Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B. line stands for “Love, Angel, Music, Baby,” but can we please pretend for a sec that it stands for “Love, Angel, Makeup, Baby”?

Because, makeup? Pretty please? It makes sense when you consider Gwen’s new collaboration collection with Urban Decay, UD Gwen Stefani.

Think of it as a part deux extension of last year’s UD Gwen Stefani Eyeshadow Palette. There are lipsticks galore (and, hello! — it wouldn’t be a G.Stef collab without rockin’ reds), lip pencils, a blush palette and a brow box.

Here are swatches and pics of the whole kit and caboodle, but I need a little more time with these products to canoodle (!), then I’ll holla back, girl (haha, you know I couldn’t resist), with some looks and the full scoop.

I’m lovin’ the reds, especially the matte red, 714. Very bright. And I like the packaging. That gold and black seems very Gwen.

I was a little bummed when I swatched Ex-Girlfriend, one of the Lipsticks, because it was so creamy that the lipstick bullet broke. 🙁 And I won’t be able to use the Brow Box, because it’s for blondes…so in this case, I guess blonde’s really do have more fun.

The Urban Decay UD Gwen Stefani Collection

  • (1) Blush Palette — $45
  • (8) Lipsticks — $18 each
  • (6) Lip Pencils — $20 each
  • (1) Brow Box — $30

What’s the Minimum Number of Brushes You Need to Do an Entire Makeup Look From Start to Finish?

January 7th, 2016 by Karen 29 Comments

hot-pink-brushes

In a perfect world…but one where you don’t have six dozen different brushes, what’s the bare minimum number of makeup brushes you need to comfortably do an entire makeup look from start to finish?

For me it’s four. Actually, I could probably get away with three, but four is my magic number, and they’d be…

  • 1. An angled eyeliner brush, which I could use to fill in my brows (I’m back on an eyeshadow-as-a-brow-powder kick) and line my upper lash line.

See what I’m doing here? It’s multitasking madness, yo! I like the NARS #47 Angled Eyeliner Brush (it’s a splurge at $28, but DAYUM! — it always does my winged liner right, and I recommend it to beginners all the time). The good ol’ MAC 266 is another great one.

  • 2. A tapered blending eyeshadow brush, which I’d use to quickly get a base color all over the lid. Then I’d clean it by running it across a paper towel before using it again to blend my eyeshadow.

And, as long as I’m not working with any dark or bright colors like blues, greens and purples, it could also double as a highlighting face brush.

Right now Laura Mercier makes my favorite version of this type of brush, which she calls a ponytail brush.

  • 3. A domed eyeshadow brush, which I’d use for crease work. LOL! — “crease work.” Makes it sound like I’m building a better mousetrap or something. 🙂

I’d also use this one to run shadow along my lower lash lines. MAC makes my standby favorite, the 217. I consider it an absolute essential in a makeup bag.

  • 4. A medium-sized face brush, which I’d use to apply all of my face stuff (powder, highlighter, bronzer and blush) because it doesn’t just take a village, people! It takes a small nation!

I really like the MAC 128 Split Fibre Cheek Brush because you get both natural fibers (good for powder products) and synthetic fibers (best for cream products) in the same brush head, but I usually just use one side to apply my products and then blend with the other.

You are literally getting two brushes in one!

I guess the theme here is multitasking… I like brushes that do different jobs.

How about you? How many brushes do you need?

NARS Spring 2016 Collection First Impressions & Swatches

January 6th, 2016 by Karen 16 Comments

There’s a video review in this post, but if it’s not appearing, you can click here to watch it on YouTube.

Ya know, I never would have thought to wear icy mint with rose gold — never in a million years! — but because NARS is NARS, for some reason, they go together. Who knew?! I sure as heck didn’t.

I really appreciate how NARS gets me out of my usual color comfort zone, and it’s their unexpected color combos that I think make their seasonal collections some of the most interesting ones around.

This year for spring 2016 we get a small, succinct NARS launch of nine products — about half of them eye products, half lips products, and a powder blush — mostly in sweet rosy and beige tones.

There’s also that icy mint up in the mix and a shimmery blue for a fun, springy touch.

I tried something a little different with this video by filming my first impressions as I use each of the products.

Um…please excuse mah crazy hair! It’s been raining cats and kittens here in NorCal this week, and I haven’t wanted to bother, LOL!

The NARS Spring 2016 Nouvelle Vogue collection…

  • Tarvos Dual-Intensity Eyeshadow, an icy mint ($29)
  • Cressida Dual-Intensity Eyeshadow, a shimmering midnight blue ($29)
  • Kari Dual-Intensity Eyeshadow, a soft rosy pink ($29)
  • Hammamet Duo Eyeshadow, a matte beige and a bronze rose ($35, limited edition)
  • Impassioned Blush, a pink orchid ($30)
  • Instant Crash Lip Gloss, a soft shimmering apricot ($26, limited edition)
  • Vida Loca Lip Gloss, a guava ($26, limited edition)
  • Rosecliff Lipsticks, a soft rose ($28)
  • Banned Red Lipstick, a mulled wine ($28)
  • Available January 15 at NARS boutiques and narscosmetics.com, and February 1 at NARS counters

As always, thank you for watching!

5 Tips for a Successful Spa Experience

January 6th, 2016 by Karen 13 Comments

The Spa on the Plaza at the Portola Hotel and Spa in Monterey, California
The Spa on the Plaza at the Portola Hotel & Spa in Monterey, California

If I could, I would go to a spa every single day of my life. They’re quiet, they smell good, you get to walk around in a robe and slippers, and somebody takes care of you, instead of the other way around. For a good hour, you don’t have to worry about anything, and sitting around for long blocks of time is considered totally OK. You can just sit there and zone out…

Going to a spa is one of those treats I like to give myself once or twice a year, especially when I travel, and on my trip to Monterey last weekend, I popped on over to the Spa on the Plaza at the Portola Hotel & Spa for a prenatal massage (in a nutshell: it was great!).

Incidentally, when you’re a pregnant lady, the prenatal massage is pretty much your only massage option if you can’t lay flat on your tum, but it works most of the majorly sore spots, like your back, hips and feet.

If you go to the Spa on the Plaza, and I hope you do, ask for Ashleigh. She has amazing hands, and she’s super nice. Seriously, her hands were among the best parts of my trip.

Beauty products galore
Beauty products galore!

While I sat in the Relaxation Room (that’s actually what it’s called), I got to thinking about the things that make for a successful spa visit. If you have a spa day in your future, here are some things to think about…

1. Get there early

The relaxation room
The Relaxation Room…

Most spas suggest that you arrive at least 15 minutes before your appointment, but I suggest a full hour or two — maybe even three, depending on the spa’s facilities and how stressed you’re feeling.

Seriously. First of all, you don’t want to be stressed and rushing to make a spa appointment (kind of defeats the purpose, yo!). You want to get there with plenty of time to check in, check out the facilities, and give yourself some time to relax (possibly even take a nap).

Research the spa’s facilities online or by calling them on the phone before you go. That way, you can take advantage of any extra niceties they may have, like steam rooms and pools.

On a Scale of 1-10, Where Are You in Terms of How Involved/Heavy Your Makeup Has Been Lately?

January 6th, 2016 by Karen 29 Comments

minimal makeup december 2015
This makeup look took 15 minutes (which is about all I can handle at the moment)

On a scale of 1-10, with 1 being hardly any makeup at all and 10 being full-on diva drag queen fabulousness, where are you in terms of how involved/heavy your makeup has been lately?

Seeing as how, pretty much, all I’ve been wearing lately hasn’t been much at all (Well, let me clarify that… It hasn’t been much for me, since my idea of “hasn’t been much at all” might be more than the average gal’s, since I love le face paint and all.), I’d put myself at about a 4 or a 5… Maybe a 4.5. Or a solid 4.75? LOL! Let’s just say that I’m smack dab in the middle at 5.

Honestly, with the hectic holidays and a little bit of travel thrown on top — plus my inability to sit still for long (pregnancy has made me antsy, yo!) — all I can manage is whatever I can squeeze into 15 minutes.

And I’ve also been into more natural looks lately. I guess I’m going through a phase… I mean, sometimes I want to do all of the fun makeup extras — the extra contouring, the blending, the layering, the playing with different textures and finishes — and I like wearing a “heavier” makeup look, too, because, well, it’s fun, and it can be a great artistic outlet when I have the time, energy and patience for it, but right now, though, I’m all about skin that looks like real skin (which doesn’t require a lot of effort) and a light touch of color and definition on my eyes and cheeks.

The furthest I’ll go in terms of color lately has been on my lips, because for me I think they’re the quickest way to make an impact that doesn’t require tons of work. I keep a couple of nude lip colors in my makeup bag (one foolproof combo that works with everything: MAC Cremesheen Lipstick in Only You from the Ellie Golding collection and NARS Lipgloss in Chihuahua), along with some brighter options.

For brights, I still like ’em easy, and I have several reds, oranges and pinks in my bag from the MAC Velvetease Lip Pencil collection (Anything Goes, Lover’s Lane, Just My Type and Just Add Romance) because they’re like lip pencils and matte lipsticks in one, so they don’t take much fuss.

How about you?
