Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 315

Sundays with Tabs

Many kitty supermodels are so busy napping, eating and pouncing that they neglect their creative side.

This is why Tabs decided to start publishing his own series of graphic novels last year (“The Husky Tabby”). He didn’t care if other cats thought it was strange, or if any of the comics were bestsellers (even though “Turning Point” was), because he didn’t do it for anyone else. He did it to express his feline creativity.

Still, other cats noticed.

In July, the cat division at Marvel called and helped produce “Surely You Jest.”

What started as a creative outlet has since become a profitable side gig: feline graphic novels.

Fast forward to now… This fall, Tabs begins a completely new series, and today you get to read part 1. 🙂

Introducing “Legacy!”

7 Ways to Win a $50 eGift Card From Sephora! (Ends Monday)

September 27th, 2014 by Karen 305 Comments

Enter this week's Sephora giveaway

I’m so exci-ted,
I’m so exci-ted,
I’m going hi-king,
I’m going hi-king.

Yeah, I’m so excited! I’m going hiking with a girlfriend up at Muir Woods over in Mill Valley this morning, so I’m having a quick cup of coffee, a couple pancakes, and then I have to bolt.

I gotta tell ya…this whole blogging thing? Lots of indoor time. I’m really looking forward to just walking around outside.

It’s not going to be intense. We’re doing a loop around this one popular hike, but it’s sunny today, and the area is heavily forested redwood trees, so it should be fun. Maybe I’ll even see a Sasquatch or a porcupine or something interesting like that. 🙂

I hope you’re doing something other than chores and errands today. I know all of that stuff has to get done, and you’re probably the person who has to do it a lot of the time, but dang it! — screw that. Do something fun today instead.

Good luck in this weekend’s giveaway, babe. Onward and upward! Talk to you soon (maybe from the redwoods).

Win a $50 gift card from Sephora

  • One (1) Sephora eGift card containing $50 sent to the winner by email (international readers, you may opt to receive $50 sent by PayPal instead).

  • You must be 18 or older to enter (or otherwise an adult based on your local laws).

    • What’s the best time you’ve ever had dancing?
    • Where’s your favorite makeup counter?
    • Who’s your best makeup shopping buddy?
    • What’s your favorite matte lipstick?
  • You can enter in up to seven ways to boost your chances of winning.

Cream shadows and nude lipsticks by Illamasqua

I’m pretty excited about tomorrow. I’m supposed to be going hiking with a friend in Muir Woods, which I haven’t done for years, and then to Cheesecake Factory for Avocado Egg Rolls.

I’ve been craving those things lately…

I’m also going to trying out some new items from Illamasqua. The Vintage Metallix Eye Shadows ($26 each) are from the new Once fall collection, and the lipsticks from the Glamore collection ($30 each).

It’s not as easy to find Illamasqua here in the US anymore, with Sephora no longer carrying the line, but you can still get your fix online at illamasqua.com.

L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Ombre Quad in Incredible Grey

September 26th, 2014 by Karen 8 Comments

L’Oreal Paris Riche Eyeshadow in Incredible Grey (1)

L’Oreal Paris Riche Eyeshadow in Incredible Grey (2)

So…sometimes I want to wear a smokey eye look, but I want it to just magically appear on my face, like POOF! All done. Instant smokey eye.

Basically, I want the smokey payoff part without all of the work, the blending.

That’s where palettes like the Colour Riche Ombre Quad in Incredible Grey ($9.99) by L’Oreal Paris are great. I’ll line my lash lines with a dark gray or gunmetal liner, smudge out the edges, and blend a deep gray shadow directly on top of the liner. Then I’ll line my water lines with a black kohl for a subtle gradient from black to gray.

I’ll keep it kind of messy on purpose…kind of rock ‘n’ roll.

By the way, these Colour Riche Ombre Quads are fab. The shadows are super pigmented, and the formula couldn’t be a whole lot easier to blend. Plus, they’re only $9.99 each.

Next time you swing by a drugstore, take a look. Incredible Grey and the other Colour Riche Ombre Quads are available now at drugstores, Ulta and online.

P.S. Whew! What a long week. Anyone else in the mood for Chinese food? I’m really craving walnut shrimp…

A Model of Elegant Versatility: The new MAC Brooke Shields Collection, Available Now

September 26th, 2014 by Karen 17 Comments

MAC Brooke Shields Collection
Wearing the new MAC Brooke Shields collection, available now online, and coming to MAC stores and counters October 2, 2014

If you ever wished upon a star (or begged the tooth fairy in a note scrawled on pink Hello Kitty stationary) for a pair of Calvin Klein jeans in the early ’80s, chances are you remember the phenomenon that is/was Brooke Shields, the face of MAC’s latest collaborations.

As a kid in the ’80s, I was obsessed with Brooke’s long brown hair, in part because I was rocking the same short, feathered hairdo that most of my grownup uncles were wearing at the time.

Ugh!

I wanted Brooke’s long, flowing hair more than almost anything…except a Hello Kitty lunchbox.

If you weren’t around back then and never saw The Blue Lagoon, you may still recognize Brooke as the woman who elegantly poses on La-Z-Boy sofas (not gonna lie, I kind of want a teal one!) or shows off her Foster Grant sunglasses.

Homegirl seems to do a lot of endorsements, and a little bit of everything else. Among other things, she’s an actress, model (In 1980, at 14, she was the youngest fashion model ever to appear on the cover of Vogue), spokeswoman and purveyor of big brows.

And now, a MAC collaborator.

I’ve been eagerly awaiting Brooke’s 14-piece limited edition collection (a mix of new shades and re-promotes, now available online) because, hello! — neutral eyeshadows.

There are so many in this release, but before you throw that suspicious side eye at me, hear me out. These neutrals are totally fun. Buttery golden browns, neutral golds, beiges and grays, that kind of thing. The collection also features some purply taupes, bronzes and olives, to turn things up if you want, and for cheeks and lips, we get soft corals and warm, orangey reds.

I think what we have here is definitely a mellower look for MAC, and it may not appeal to every MAC crowd. Those who hunger for the edgier collaborations with Rihanna/Lorde/[INSERT TRENDY MUSIC ARTIST HERE], might not be impressed. Like, if you want a new bold green eyeshadow to wear with your black pleather and whip on stage somewhere, or a matte black lipstick to go with your Katy Perry-style bra that shoots out string cheese, then you may not be into this.

But maybe you will.

Gosh, I love, LOVE this release. Many of the pieces feel timeless and easy to wear, with finishes and textures that makeup lovers of all ages could pull off — not a big surprise, considering that Brooke is 49.

OK, first though, sad panda face. 🙁

The 15-pan Gravitas palette sold out in like two seconds online. Yesterday afternoon, I chatted with a MAC rep online who said that as of now, there are no plans (that she knew of) to restock additional palettes on maccosmetics.com.

Honestly, I’m not surprised it disappeared so quickly, as it contains some of MAC’s bestselling neutrals, like Soft Brown, Shroom, Satin Taupe and Carbon, as well as many new shades, all for $85, which is dramatically less than the $160 MAC normally charges for its 15-pan palettes. If you still have your eye on this one, a call to your closest MAC counter might be in order. Perhaps you can ask an associate to contact you when the palette arrives. I might even consider calling in every day until the official October 2 launch date.

September 26th, 2014 by Karen 17 Comments

Too Faced Under the Mistletoe
The new Under the Mistletoe set by Too Faced Cosmetics, $28

Other than El Hub getting his share, I’ll be saving my mistletoe kisses for the three La Creme Lipsticks in the new Under the Mistletoe set by cruelty-free carolers Too Faced Cosmetics.

Too Faced Under the Mistletoe Box

The $28 limited edition set comes with three full-size, shimmery versions of a few La Creme Lipstick bestsellers, including my favorite, Spice Spice Baby, and to keep them safe and sound, tuck them in at night in the included glittery pink lip bag.

Note to self: Ask Santa for a glittery pink sleeping bag. 🙂

Last Hurrah of the Gerberas

September 25th, 2014 by Karen 19 Comments

I planted these gerbera daisies last spring, and they grew strong and bright and looked lovely through summer. Now, sadly, they’re saying farewell.

Aww! Glittery tears… Like on Westeros, winter is coming. 🙁

I’m not ready for the cold weather. Are you?!

What a Tweet Palette! Rouge Bunny Rouge Raw Garden Eye Shadow Palette in Chronos

Rouge Bunny Rouge Raw Garden Eye Shadow Palette in Chronos

Rouge Bunny Rouge Raw Garden Eye Shadow Palette in Chronos, $59

Maybe it’s because I spend waaaaaay too much time kickin’ it with my cat, but I get really, REALLY excited about bird-themed makeup. 🙂

My heart flutters like a hummingbird when I look at the new Rouge Bunny Rouge Raw Garden Eye Shadow Palette in Chronos ($59).

Eep! There’s a bird on the pans! So pretty…

Metallics take flight in this five-pan palette of shimmers, which includes a beige, taupe, khaki, plum and deep blue.

I can’t wait to try winged liner with the plum shade. Ooh, maybe with the khaki on the lid and the lighter beige on the inner corner? I see some smokey eye looks in my future.

Chronos is available now at Rouge Bunny Rouge counters and online for $59.
