Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 288

March 23rd, 2014 by Karen 12 Comments

Tabs for Covercat Fur Illuminator in Main Attraction

You may not be able to tell because of his Rubenesque physique, but Tabs leads a very active kitty lifestyle. He kayaks, stand-up paddles — actually, he even volunteers as a cheerleading coach for underprivileged kitties; he’s also an experienced tumbler.

He does not just sit around and have me hand-feed him kitty treats. Oh, no! In fact, now that the days are getting longer and the weather’s getting nicer, he’s already preparing for his spring and summer activities, which include whitewater rafting.

He’s an incredibly busy kitty, but that doesn’t stop him from getting sh*t done. He’s still at the top of his modeling game, like this week, he worked on ad campaigns for Covercat, Kerastase, NYC, NYX and Urban Decay.

If you’re interested, here are the latest pics from his kitty modeling portfolio. 🙂

Who is Tabs the Cat?
Kitty Supermodel Tabs the CatAbout seven years ago I befriended a stray, flea-bitten tabby cat with a bad case of worms. I could see he’d fallen on hard times, but his profound knowledge of high fashion and department store cosmetics led me to believe that he was more than meets the eye. We became fast friends, and now he’s actually my boss (and a successful kitty model).

A Makeup and Beauty Blog giveaway

Win a $50 Sephora eCard from Makeup and Beauty Blog

Rise and shine, pal o’ mine! It’s caturday. Do you know where your tubby tabby is?

No, really — do you know where Tabs is? Because I have know where he is right now. He usually gets up with me to beg for treats and lurvies, but I haven’t seen him this morning. He’s probably brooding somewhere, as cats are wont to do…

Cats are #1!How was your sleeps? Did you have any good dreams?

I remember having one about…something.

There was a baseball stadium involved, and I was working at a booth in the stadium promenade selling tchotchkes of some kind, although I can’t remember what they were right now… They might have been those big foam fingers. I’m not sure though. I just remember everything in the dream being very, very important, LOL!

In other news, cleaning today. I don’t want to, but I have to. I really have to straighten up my office because it’s getting to the point where I can’t walk from the door to the chair at my desk. After that, who knows? Maybe some deck gardening.

I picked up some cat grass seeds for Tabs and some radish seeds for El Hub this week, and I want to plant those.

Good luck in this weekend’s giveaway. Talk to you soon. 🙂

The Gerbera Daisies Send Their Regards

March 21st, 2014 by Karen 12 Comments

Regards all the way from Novato, California. That’s about 25 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge and 40 miles south of Napa Valley (for the Star Wars fans out there, we’re about 5 miles from the otherworldly Skywalker Ranch), so these are sci-fi-lovin’ Bay Area Gerbera daisies. 🙂

Start with makeup and add a DJ. That’s a recipe for fun right there. 🙂

If you’re planning to be anywhere near Union Square in San Francisco tomorrow, seek out the MAC Pro flagship store at 45 Powell (you can get there on the Powell Street cable car). They’re hosting their big grand opening event called MAC Rocks Colour.

If you’d like to get your makeup done while you’re there, call ahead just in case the store is busy (there’s a very good chance) at (415) 402-0658 to book an appointment.

While you’re there, check out the new Mineralize Rick Lipstick in Lady at Play ($22), a beautiful tangerine…

Orange lips are having a moment right now. They’re very on-trend for spring.

Too Faced Summer 2014 Pics and Swatches: It’s Summer in Saint-Tropez

March 21st, 2014 by Karen 30 Comments

Too Faced Summer 2014
Too Faced Summer 2014!

KAREN: Ryan, sweetheart, could you please do my back? Mama doesn’t want to burn…

RYAN: Sure, babe.

KAREN: Oh! Hi! How’s the vacation going? Hot enough for ya?

YOU: I’m burning up!

KAREN: You two make such a cute couple. I was just asking RyGos to sunscreen my back. What are you and J-Ren doing?

YOU: Just cruising the beach, ya know, catchin’ some rays.

KAREN: Fun! Wasn’t that beachside buffet this morning dee-vine? I just love breakfast in Saint-Tropez…

YOU: Me too!

Le sigh…

Well, I may not not be kickin’ it old-school with RyGos at a five-star beach resort, but at least I can look the part and pretend with the Too Faced Cosmetics summer collection. 🙂

Inspiration: the French Riviera. We’re talking first class beachside cabanas, Chanel sunglasses and Cristal. Oui-oui, mademoiselle!

LOL!

The release just docked at Too Faced counters and online this week with four new palettes and a new line of liquid lipsticks, codename Melted.

Here are pics and swatches of the four palettes for now, and we’ll do the Melted lippies next week.

I’ll be testing these and getting more acquainted with them this weekend, so check back next week for reviews.

The New NARS Artistry Eye and Lip Brushes Make Accuracy an Art Form

March 21st, 2014 by Karen 17 Comments

NARS Artistry Brushes Eye Lip Category
The new NARS Artistry Eye and Lip brushes, coming April 1 to NARS boutiques and narscometics.com (you can also read about the the cheek and face brushes from the line here).

We’ve got a pooped princess over here…but she’s gonna do her best to persevere and proclaim pertinent particulars about the new NARS Artistry Eye and Lip Brushes.

Oh, boy, lots of “p” words up there… I can already tell it’s gonna be one of those reviews (read: wackadoo).

This is round two. We looked at the face and cheek brushes in round one.

So why am I tired? Well, I went out to dinner last night and partook (partook — is that a word?) of some wine, and now I’m having trouble stringing coherent sentences together.

Funny how that happens.

Anywho! These new brushes…

NARS Artistry Brushes Eye Lip Category

There are nine eye brushes and one lip brush in the new Artistry Brush line (we looked at the Face and Cheek brushes the other day). I’ve been using them to paint my mug for a few days, and so far I’m impressed.

Time to paint!

With the eye and lip brushes we’re looking at today, “versatility and soft bristles” are the figurative words. There are some exciting things here if you like makeup tools.

NARS Eye Shadow Brush 40, $32

NARS Eye Shadow Brush 40
NARS Eye Shadow Brush 40, $32

Like my favorite tubby tabby, the flat, paddle-shaped NARS Eye Shadow Brush 40 ($32) is on the thicker side.

Also like my husky tabby’s tum, the shape is…interesting. 🙂 It’s flat like a paddle brush, but fluffy like a domed blending brush, and the shape makes it usable for a variety of tasks, like dusting a base color all over your lids, blending two different shades together, or sweeping color into your crease.

It also blends as well as it applies, so it’s a multitasking mofo. If you want an eye brush that does it all, I think the 40, with its super soft, sable hair bristles, is a good option.

The New Clinique StoryChangers Program: My Smile Lines Tell the Story of My Life…and So Far It’s a Pretty Good Story

March 21st, 2014 by Karen 24 Comments

This post is sponsored by Clinique and the new StoryChangers program. “We Are Story Changers. Watch and read stories from women like you who prove that when you change your story, you change your outlook.” For information about my posting policy, please see my Disclaimer.

I was looking through some old pictures the other day when I came across one of me and my best friend, Jen, on the day we graduated from high school (20 years ago!).

In the pic, we’re standing in my living room in our graduation caps and gowns, all excited and hopeful, and truth be told a little clueless, LOL!

karen high school yikes 2

Of course I had to snap a pic with my phone (I feel like I’m always doing this, taking pics of other pics). I texted it to Jen with a note, “Recognize these two youngins?”

She wrote back, “WOW. Just look at our faces. We were babies.”

And yeah, I guess we were. Although at the time, I remember thinking that I was all grown up because I was off to college in a few months.

Little did I realize then the challenges ahead, and when I look at the pic now, at my smooth, unlined skin and my squishy baby-faced cheeks, I see a young girl who has no idea of the hills she’ll have to climb, the obstacles she’ll eventually conquer, the missteps she’ll make, and make again, and again, the wonderful people she’ll meet along the way and the lessons she’ll learn.

And when I look in the mirror now, these many years later, I see proof of those lessons in my lines.

Sure, my pores are more visible, and my under-eye area isn’t as bright as it once was (ah…to be 18 again and able to get away with not wearing under-eye concealer!), but those smile lines around my eyes that show up when I’m happy, and those lines that show up around my mouth when I’m laughing, are reminders of the good times I’ve had along the way.

We all have our stories to tell and our paths to take. The decisions we make — both big and small — chart the course of our lives, and the beauty of it is, we can change that course. It’s kind of powerful, really, if you think about it. I don’t know where I’d be now (maybe still working at a job I didn’t like) if I hadn’t listened to that nagging voice in my head seven years ago that kept bugging me to start a blog. I’m grateful I listened to it.

This idea that we have the power to change our own story is the backbone of Clinique’s new StoryChangers program, a new multimedia platform on Clinique.com with videos, stories and vlogs from bloggers (including yours truly!) that celebrate the different ways women change their own stories, while introducing Clinique’s line of Acne solution products.

Hopefully one of their stories inspires you (and maybe your skin, too!), one decision at a time.

Every day of my life, my skin is changing, and so am I. As are you. We can’t stop things from changing, but we can alter course along the way. 🙂

If you have any questions at all about Clinique Acne solutions and you want answers straight from the source, they have a live chat available on their website where you can talk to a Clinique consultant about a regimen that’s right for your needs.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Sit Back, Relax and Enjoy the Show With H. Gillerman Organics Tension Remedy

March 20th, 2014 by Karen 18 Comments

H. Gillerman Organics Tension Remedy
Frankie says RELAX!

So, I’m not sure if this is beauty related (kinda sorta not really?), but I think whenever you find anything that prevents you from throwing your computer across the room while you’re doing taxes, it’s worth MAJOR props.

Say hello to H. Gillerman Organic’s Tension Remedy ($48). When you need/want to suppress yo’ crazy, this stuff is the sh*t.

H. Gillerman Organics Tension Remedy

A blend of organic essential oils, including lavender and peppermint, it helps ease neck tension and mental fatigue — two things I’ve had in spades lately, not gonna lie.

H. Gillerman Organics Tension Remedy

The bottle fits nicely in the palm of my hand (ooh, making it convenient for business trips). Just apply a couple drops on the back of your neck, right at the base.
