Seduce Me, Marc…

“Um…dude,” I said, “I think that’s Marc Jacobs!”

Have you seen Disconnect, starring Alexander Skarsgård, Jason Bateman and Paula Patton? And Marc Jacobs?

Yeah, Marc Jacobs.

El Hub and I rented it last weekend, and I was kind of surprised to see Marc in it (he plays a scary, unsavory character).

These cuties here are from his makeup line. That’s Lovemarc Lip Gels in Role Play (left) and Seduce Me (right), both available now at Sephora stores and sephora.com for $30 each.

Unsung Makeup Heroes: Tom Ford Beauty African Violet Nail Lacquer

March 3rd, 2014 by Karen 21 Comments

Tom Ford African Violet Nail Lacquer
Tom Ford Nail Lacquer in African Violet ($32)

African violetPurple eyeshadows; purple liners; purple lipsticks; flowers; candy; sweaters; one-eyed, one-horned flying purple people eaters! PURPLE EVERYTHING!

And purple paw polish, too. 🙂

Of the millions (well, hundreds) of promising purple paw polishes in the universe, the one that electrifies me like a Tesla coil from the tips of my ears down to the tips of my toes has to be Tom Ford’s bright creamy Nail Lacquer in African Violet.

It borrows its name from one of Mother Nature’s most perfect purple creations, in my opinion, the Saintpaulia ionantha plant, or African violet, which, coincidentally, happens to be cat-friendly, according to the good folks over at VCA Animal Hospitals.

Speaking of cats (’cause we alway circle back to the kittehs around here), this particular African Violet has never elicited any complaints from my favorite fashionable feline.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 312

March 3rd, 2014 by Karen 34 Comments

The Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll for March 3, 2014
Extra cute with a side o’ cute!

You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”

Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.

  1. What’s your current favorite product from MAC?
As of this exact moment in time, Warm Soul Mineralize Blush.
  2. What was the highlight of your weekend?

    Sleeping in yesterday.
  3. Have you ever photobombed anyone?
I’ve been photobombing since before it was a thing, so yes. 🙂
  4. Is your desk or office messy or neat?

Ungh! So messy and I hate it.
  5. What’s your current favorite social network and why?

Instagram, because where else can you share countless pictures of your cat without people thinking you’re completely nuts?

Wait — I guess I already do that on this blog, haha!

  6. Have you ever had any cartoon-themed lunch boxes, bags, binders — things like that?

Yes, when I was a kid. I had Hello Kitty everything. I had a Hello Kitty lunch box, Hello Kitty binders, pens. I wish I’d kept all that stuff.
  7. Pink: love it or leave it?

Love it. Pink flowers, lipstick, pink summery clothes and colors. It just makes me happy.

I think I have a little bit more love for bright pinks…

Ooh! Watermelon pink is my fave.

  8. Have you ever had to tie a tie (for yourself or someone else)?

Hmm… I don’t think so? Actually, I did go through a phase — I think it was fourth grade — when I wanted to wear pastel ties, so I did learn how to do it.

    It was the ’80s… I don’t know.

  9. Have you ever had a pet bird, and if so, what was his/her name?

We had a cockatiel when I was a kid, very briefly. I can’t remember its name or what happened to it though.
  10. What does your umbrella look like?

It’s one of those longer ones with a wooden handle, and there’s a painting on the surface of a woman dancing barefoot at the beach with a man holding an umbrella over her.

Le List

Now it’s your turn. Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em! 🙂

1. What’s your current favorite product from MAC?
2. What was the highlight of your weekend?
3. Have you ever photobombed anyone?
4. Is your desk or office messy or neat?
5. What’s your current favorite social network and why?
6. Have you ever had any cartoon-themed lunch boxes, bags, binders — things like that?
7. Pink: love it or leave it?
8. Have you ever had to tie a tie (for yourself or someone else)?
9. Have you ever had a pet bird, and if so, what was his/her name?
10. What does your umbrella look like?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

P.S. Did you watch the Oscars last night (we turned back and forth with The Walking Dead, which was one of my favorite episodes ever, BTW)? Didn’t Ellen do great??

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 285

March 2nd, 2014 by Karen 10 Comments

Tabs the Cat starring in The Great Catsby

Only a few hours till showtime! It’s so exciting… Are you watching the Academy Awards tonight?? 🙂

Tabs is down in SoCal now getting ready for the show. In fact, I’ve had to assist him remotely all day long. I couldn’t fly down to L.A. with the rest of Team Tabs because there was no room in the executive jet for me, so I had to stay behind.

Thank goodness for technology; otherwise, my job would be nearly impossible. I’ve had to coordinate stylists, the best fur handlers in the business, celebrity manicurists — all from Novato!

Wasn’t easy.

In addition to the show, Tabs has several after parties to attend. Of course, he thinks he’s going to sweep every single category he’s nominated in, but even if he loses, you know he’ll lose gracefully.

I’m just really hoping that he and DiCaprio stay out of each other’s way… They got into a tiff last summer while playing tennis, and things have never been quite the same between them. I can’t wait for it to blow over.

Here are five more kitty movie posters (did you see the Best Picture posters from last week?) for movies Tabs starred in last year.

As for tonight, may the best cat win! 🙂

Who is Tabs the Cat?
Kitty Supermodel Tabs the CatAbout seven years ago I befriended a stray, flea-bitten tabby cat with a bad case of worms. I could see he’d fallen on hard times, but his profound knowledge of high fashion and department store cosmetics led me to believe that he was more than meets the eye. We became fast friends, and now he’s actually my boss (and a successful kitty model).

L’Oreal Purple Priority Infallible 24HR Eye Shadow

L’Oreal Purple Priority Infallible 24HR Eye Shadow, $8

I plan to make this purple a priority this weekend. 🙂

While stunning on its own, I bet this hybrid cream/powder eyeshadow, with its metallic finish, would look that much more amaze-balls under one of Urban Decay’s shimmery purples like Gravity, Flash or Asphyxia.

Can’t. Wait. To play!

Purple Priority, one of six shades in L’Oreal’s Butterfly collection, is available now at drugstores, Ulta stores and ulta.com.

Cleanse, Prime and Shine Your Claws With Sephora’s Formula X “The System”

February 28th, 2014 by Karen 8 Comments

Sephora Formula X The System
Sephora Formula X The System

I usually lack the wherewithal for multi-step manis involving a base and top coat when I’m painting my paws (read: I’m too lazy, yo), even though my rational mind fully recognizes the prudence of taking the extra time to extend the life of my polish.

But ever since I started using Sephora’s Formula X “The System” $32 nail kit, I don’t mind going the extra mile at all.

Sephora Formula X the System Nail Cleanser
Nail Cleanser

This is partly due to thinking that the bottles in the kit look kind of sci-fi and cool, like they belong in an Apple store beside the latest iMacs, and also because they just plain work.

The kit gets high marks from reviewers on sephora.com, and I can see why. I used the Nail Cleanser (a brush-on liquid that helps remove residue from your nails so the products you layer on top bind better), Base Coat and Top Coat with Tom Ford’s Viper Nail Lacquer this week, and my nails have definitely handled the hell I regularly put them through better.
