To Brighter Days! Limited Edition Skincare Goodies From the Tarte Spring 2014 Collection

January 21st, 2014 by Karen 14 Comments

Tarte Spring 2014
Tarte Spring 2014
Tarte Spring 2014…here’s to brighter days!

Ravishing…

What a great word.

Ravishing never goes out of style, ya know? “She had ravishing, radiant skin.”

That just sounds great. 🙂

Tarte’s new spring 2014 collection has some limited edition skincare products designed to create exactly that — someone/something ravishing — with pieces to brighten dull, winter skin.

Here’s to brighter days (she called, raising her coffee cup in the air)!

Limited edition Supersize Maracuja Oil ($75)

Tarte Supersize Maracuja Oil
Limited edition Supersized 3.4-ounce Maracuja Oil ($75)

I try to always have a bottle of Tarte’s Maracuja Oil in my bathroom, and I use it for a bunch of things, like taking off hard-to-remove long-wearing makeup, moisturizing the dry patches on my cheeks and hydrating my shredded carrot-like cuticles.

Even El Hub loves it. He uses it as a shave oil because, apparently, it’s the only thing that doesn’t irritate his sensitive man skin (awww!).

Supersized Maracuja with a regular-size bottle
The Supersized 3.4-ounce Maracuja bottle beside a regular-sized 1.7-ounce one

Brace yourself for sticker shock, though, as the extra large limited edition bottle costs a whopping $75 (!). But, considering that the regular-sized 1.7-ounce bottles cost $46 apiece, if you’re a maracuja oil maven, it’s a pretty good deal…and you can also re-purpose the cute limited edition box for something else, like storing brushes or lipglosses.

Limited edition Maracuja C Brighter Eye Treatement ($38)

Look at that jar! I give it extra points for cuteness. 🙂 I love the design on the cap of Maracuja C-Brighter Eye Treatment ($38). It’s a brightening eye cream with a host of helpful-sounding ingredients, like vitamin C, rice bran, mango and coconut, and oat sugar. It’s supposed to brighten, smooth and tighten skin and — you know — do a whole host of great things, like diminish fine lines and dark circles over time. I like it. I use it all the time to prep my eye area for makeup. It sinks in quickly, which is nice, and does a good job of de-puffing my lids.

Does it make my fine lines and dark circles go away? Uh…not yet, and I don’t know if it will. But then, I am not very good about committing to the same eye cream for the weeks and months it usually takes to detect a difference with products that make awesome-sounding claims.

Tarte Bright By Night Skincare Discovery Set ($10, a Sephora exclusive)

This little cutie, the Tarte Bright By Night Skincare Discovery Set, is a Sephora exclusive that comes with travel-sized versions of Tarte’s Maracuja Oil and C-Brighter Eye Treatment for $10.

The bottles are tiny…but $10 seems like a good deal. You’d never have to leave home without your Tarte skincare faves.

Tarte’s To Brighter Days spring 2014 skincare products are available now online and at Sephora and Ulta stores.

What’s the Most Wonderful Experience You’ve Ever Had at, or as a Result of a Trip to, a Makeup Counter?

January 21st, 2014 by Karen 13 Comments

Hands down, the class I took with Bobbi Brown Manager of North American Artistry Marc Reagan last spring.

Not exactly a “bumping into someone at a makeup counter” kind of experience, but it was counter related, and did come about as a result of a trip to a makeup counter.

The class was organized by the gals at the Bobbi Brown counter at Saks in San Francisco, and it. Was. Awesome! I learned some of the best makeup tips I’ve ever learned in that class. It was also frightening, sitting in front of a group of people without a stitch of makeup on (Marc demonstrated some techniques on me), but liberating…once I got past the whole terror part.

Not including that class, let’s see…

Oh! The last time I got my makeup done at Sephora was a total blast. It was for Valentine’s Day last February, and the gal who did my makeup, Chelsea, was a makeup artist rock star! — incredibly talented, chatty and really knowledgeable.

It was one of the best makeovers of my life, one of those unforgettable ones where you leave feeling like a million bucks. 🙂

What about you, my friend? What’s the most wonderful experience you’ve ever had at, or as a result of a trip to, a makeup counter?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Sheer, Why Not? To the New Physicians Formula Nude Wear Nude Glow Makeup Collection, Sheer, You May Glow

January 20th, 2014 by Karen 23 Comments

Physicians Formula Nude Wear Nude Glow Collection
Physicians Formula Nude Wear Nude Glow Collection
Three of the seven pretty pieces in the new Physicians Formula Nude Wear Nude Glow makeup collection, available at drugstores now…

OK, so even if rose gold has jumped the shark, and I’m not saying it has, I don’t care. I’m not over it yet, and apparently Physicians Formula isn’t either, because it’s all over their new Nude Wear Nude Glow makeup collection like attitude on cats. 🙂

What’s up with the new Physicians Formula Nude Wear Nude Glow collection?

  • How ’bout lingerie? The pieces were designed to feel like luxurious lingerie on the skin.
  • The formula feels as light as a feather, almost like nothing at all, and the finish is practically, except for a gorgeously understated glow, invisible.
  • We are talkin’ sheer! Hence the name, the products have something PF calls “Nude Glow” pigments — translucent pigments, as opposed to traditional opaque pigments, that allow your skin’s natural color and radiance to show through.
  • The seven-piece collection includes the Nude Wear Nude Glow Powders ($14.95 each, and available in Light and Medium); Nude Wear Nude Glow Bronzers ($14.95 each, available in Light Bronzer and Bronzer); Nude Wear Nude Glow Blushes ($12.95 each, available in Rose and Natural); and one Nude Wear Nude Glow ($12.95, available in a single shade, Touch of Glow).
  • All have been added to the Physicians Formula permanent line, and are available now at drugstores, in many grocery stores and also online.

  • A pinkish peach powder blush with an opalescent glow.
  • I bet this one would look pretty as a highlighter.
  • Hello, sheer! Super sheer! — and totally fool-proof. Perfect if you tend to be heavy-handed with blush.

Unsung Makeup Heroes: NARS Radiant Cream Compact Foundation

January 20th, 2014 by Karen 14 Comments

NARS Radiant Cream Compact Foundation
NARS Radiant Cream Compact Foundation. That’s the compact in the center surrounded by refills.

“Feline enthusiast.”

“Beauty addict.”

“Beyonce advocate.”

“Defender of dental floss.”

“Hater of the word, ‘panties.'” (YUCK! I can’t even stand seeing it in print.)

“Advocate of enabling (primarily in the makeup arena).”

“Enemy of under-eye circles.”

Like you, I wear many badges, and I wear them all with pride. 🙂

“Foundation philanderer.” I’m growing quite fond of that one, too.

Interestingly, I’m able to remain committed to the same cat for seven years (I don’t count my dalliances with Charlize and Orangey, my two favorite neighborhood kitties), yet I’m unable to stay with the same foundation for more than a few months.

Weird.

Just when I think I’ve found THE ONE, I stumble on to something else, and frequently describe it as having, air quotes, “changed my life.”

NARS Radiant Cream Compact Foundation
Loving it: NARS Radiant Cream Compact Foundation

As of now, that distinction goes to NARS Radiant Cream Compact Foundation, and yes, it really has “changed my life.” 🙂

At least I think it has… I certainly love it; that’s for sure.

Yeah…I’m kind of on a serious NARS kick right now, and Radiant Cream has something to do with it.

It’s a great little foundation, especially if you like medium-to-full coverage and have combination, or straight-up dry, skin.

I’ve been fiendishly obsessed with MAC Face & Body for the better part of a year, and I still love it…but I’ve temporarily set it aside in favor of this. For now. I mean, I still have mad love for Mac Face & Body, but like I said — I’m on a serious NARS kick.

This stuff handles my combination dry/oily skin like RyGos handles ab work — beautifully. Even the dry parts. It smooths and evens out my skin tone without catching on any flakes or drawing attention to my dry or scaly bits (gross, but true). Great coverage, and it looks natural.

The Fab 5, Vol. 4: BECCA Cosmetics

January 20th, 2014 by Karen 23 Comments

Show me a picture of a beautiful beach (ideally, someplace warm), and whisper the words, “elegant makeup, Karen” in my ear, and guaranteed — BECCA is the brand that’s gonna pop in my mind.

I’m so happy to see it at Sephora again!

Ooh, there was a while there — dark, dark days — where BECCA was really hard to find here in the U.S. — like, you had to trek to small, sad counters at Neiman Marcus stores or get lucky and stumble across a Pure Beauty, so I’m glad it’s carried at a major retailer again.

How well do you know BECCA? If you’ve been wanting to get to know them better, have I got a video for you! 🙂

Here are my fave 5 (Fab 5?) products from the brand.

Products mentioned in the video…

  • Radiant Skin Satin Finish Foundation, $42
  • Beach Tint in Dragonfruit, $25
  • Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal, $41
  • Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed, $38
  • Mineral Blush, $32

Thank you for watching!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

With Their Green and Purple Wedges, Don’t These New Tarte Colored Clay CC Primers Look Like a Willy Wonka Collaboration?

January 20th, 2014 by Karen 27 Comments

Tarte Colored Clay CC Primer
Tarte Colored Clay CC Primer
Two of Tarte’s brand-spankin’ new Colored Clay CC Primers ($34 each)

Well color me intrigued… 🙂

These new Tarte Colored Clay CC Primers look really cool. They’re like a primer and a sheer stick foundation in one, with two color correcting wedges in purple and green embedded inside each creamy stick.

This powerful, multi-tasking, skin perfector brightens skin, evens skin tone, blurs imperfections and neutralizes any redness or discolorations. The oil-free, talc-free formula soothes skin as it glides and blends effortlessly for a smooth, even finish. Its “hourglass” applicator design delivers the perfect balance of color correction and coverage to adjust to your skin. Use it before foundation as a color-correcting primer or alone as a light coverage for an all-over flawless look.

— tartecosmetics.com

Tarte… That gang never forgets about us gals on the deeper, darker skin tone side of the beauty swimming pool, and I love them for that. These come in five shades, encompassing most of the beauty bases from Fair, to Light, to Medium, Tan and Deep.

I’m a Medium right now, but I can’t wait to be a Tan this summer! (Because it’ll mean I’ve been getting some much-needed sun.)

My thoughts after playing with them this morning…

  • LOVE the lightweight, silky formula. They contain dimethicone, and consequently have that tell-tale dimethicone “slip.”
  • They really couldn’t be a lot easier to use. Just apply directly to the skin, and blend out with your fingers.
  • I’d describe the coverage as somewhere between sheer and medium. The one I’m using, Medium, does seem to cancel out the redness around my nose, thankfully, but I can definitely still see the freckles on my cheeks…
  • I think I like wearing best these under powder foundation (looks very natural, and my pores look smaller).
  • Medium does seem to even out my skin, but it doesn’t create anything like a mask. I’ve yet to try these under liquid foundation, but I want to.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 307

January 20th, 2014 by Karen 31 Comments

The Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll for January 20, 2014
May you always see rainbows…

You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”

Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.

  1. Have you ever owned a Caboodle?
YES, and I still have it, LOL! My grandma bought it for me many moons ago. It’s mint green and pink, and I keep old costume jewelry in it from my teen years that I don’t wear anymore but can’t part with.

Funny thing is…I don’t think I ever kept makeup in it. I’ve always used it for jewelry and knick-knacks.

  2. What’s the first thing you do when you get to work?
Well, the workday here at Tabs the Cat Industries, LLC, starts early. First, I make a pot of coffee, and then clean off my desk, which is usually always a mess from the day before.
  3. What’s the bravest thing you’ve ever done?
Hmm… Well, the first thing that comes to mind was when I left a secure job working in the legal department for a big company to pursue freelance writing some years ago.

Thank goodness for El Hub…because without his encouragement, I don’t think I would’ve done that on my own.

  4. How often do you entertain?
Rarely, but not because I don’t want to. I just don’t ever feel like I have enough time to get it together to invite people over, plan a meal, then clean and cook.
  5. What’s one of your mottos?
“Please leave your crazy at the door.”
  6. How many hours of sleep do you get a night?
Around 7-8, which is enough for me to function, but not enough to be my best. I think I do my best when I get — no kidding — 10-12 hours of sleep.
  7. We’re rollin’ up to In-N-Out for lunch! What would you like?
A grilled cheese with grilled onions, tomato and lettuce (cut in half please). Also, fries and a vanilla shake.

I’ll run it all off later (I hope).

  8. What three things never fail to make you smile?
When men hold and coo at babies, watching kittens (especially tabbies) play, seeing something I’ve been wanting to buy go on sale (YES!).
  9. What mascara are you wearing today?
MAC Extended Play Gigablack Lash. We fell out of love for a while, but we’re back together again.
  10. When was the last time you saw a rainbow?
It has been a while, but then we haven’t seen much rain here in California this year…

    May 2012, I think?

Le List

Now it’s your turn. Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em! 🙂

1. Have you ever owned a Caboodle?
2. What’s the first thing you do when you first get to work?
3. What’s the bravest thing you’ve ever done?
4. How often do you entertain?
5. What’s one of your mottos?
6. How many hours of sleep do you get a night?
7. We’re rollin’ up to In-N-Out for lunch! What would you like to order?
8. What three things never fail to make you smile?
9. What mascara are you wearing today?
10. When was the last time you saw a rainbow?

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day, everyone. Are you taking the day off? Things are proceeding as usual here at Tabs the Cat Industries, LLC. Tabs figures that jumping right back into the regular work schedule will help distract us from the heartbreak of the 49ers losing the game yesterday (he doesn’t want to talk about it).

Hope you’re having a nice day so far. I’m about to make a second cup of coffee. Would you like one, too?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 279

January 19th, 2014 by Karen 20 Comments

Tabs wanted to do something a little different for his column this week — share a look into his personal life outside the realm of high-intensity kitty modeling.

You know what they say: all work and no play makes tabby a dull boy. And he’s a firm believer in relaxation/meow time.

go-ninersRight now he’s on the couch getting ready to watch the big 49ers-Seahawks football game. As you know, he played professionally for the Mill Valley Wildcats before getting into kitty modeling…

Hope you’re having a great weekend so far. Talk to you soon. 🙂

Who is Tabs the Cat? About six years ago I befriended a stray, flea-bitten tabby cat with a bad case of worms. I could see he’d fallen on hard times, but his profound knowledge of high fashion and department store cosmetics led me to believe that he was more than meets the eye. We became fast friends, and now he’s actually my boss (and a successful kitty model). 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen
