What Makeup Shades Are the Most (and Least) Flattering on You?

October 14th, 2022 by Karen 7 Comments

Happy Friday, friend!

Let’s see, the shades that are the most flattering on my tan skin tone (I’m an NC42 in MAC), are pretty much anything in the warm, but not too warm, category. For eye makeup, warm browns, taupes, purples and bronzes are my go-to shades — NARS Fez and MAC Satin Taupe all day, every day!

There does seems to be a fine line, though, between warm and TOO warm. Like, if an eyeshadow has very strong warm red or orange tones, it looks really weird on me, like I’ve had a bad cold, or I’ve been crying.

Bright jewel tones look OK on me as well. I will take all the purple, blue and green eyeliner. 🙂

For blushes and lipsticks, I like warm shades of pink or coral; I feel like I can pull off reds and browns decently, too. I have a harder time with plum and wine shades, which is why I don’t wear them as much.

How about you? What makeup shades are the most and least flattering on you?

You Get 60 Seconds for Makeup: What Do You Do?

October 13th, 2022 by Karen 19 Comments

lancome idole lash
Mascara, please!

Do you swipe on blush? Brush up your brows? I’m curious to hear what you would do if you were totally pressed for time.

I used to know a girl when I was doing theater who’s “quick and dirty” version of 60-second makeup was black liner on her water lines and loads of mascara. Another friend of mine did a swipe of red lipstick — and that was it! (She looked fantastic in it, by the way.)

For me, it’s my lash curler and mascara, and the mascara has BRING IT. I’m talking length, volume, curl, everything. Gimme all the drama, please.

If there’s any extra time in that minute, then I’ll either 1) run a clear brow gel through my brows, or 2) blend cream blush onto my cheeks.

How about you? If you had only 60 seconds to do your makeup, what would you do?

Apples and Oranges! Seasonal Apple Treats from Trader Joe’s, and a bareMinerals Mascara Made with Orange Peel

October 12th, 2022 by Karen 16 Comments

I’m wearing a mascara that has orange peel fibers in the formula!

One of my favorite lines from one of my favorite movies is from “Good Will Hunting,” and it’s when Matt Damon’s character, Will, tells off a snotty university student by saying, “How you like them apples?” Ahhh! Classic.

Speaking of apples, I popped into TJ’s yesterday and it was all apple everything. I grabbed the Harvest Apple Salad Kit (the dressing is super yummy; I add chopped hard boiled eggs for extra protein), a jar of the Apple Cider Fruit Spread and a bottle of the Honey Crisp Apple Cider.

I came this close to buying a box of the Apple Hand Pies in the bakery section, but I told myself that I needed to chill because I’m making it my mission to finally bake an apple pie from scratch.

Pies are so intimidating to me! There’s so many steps, right? You’ve got to make the crust, and then the filling. Then you have to assemble it, and bake it, and then wait forever and a day for the pie to cool so you can actually cut it without it falling apart… I don’t know, it just seems so much harder compared to cakes, cupcakes or brownies.

Anyway, it’s time for me to embark upon a pie quest, so I’ve been researching various apple pie recipes. All this to say, if you have a solid apple pie recipe, please pass it along, and put me out of my misery. I really need to bake this pie and get it out of my system, LOL!

OK, from apples to oranges… I’m still on the hunt for a new favorite mascara, and I recently tried one by bareMinerals called Maximist which uses orange peel fibers to add volume. Interesting! The brush is crazy-town – way too big!

If you’re looking for big lashes, this mascara holds the curl, doesn’t flake or smudge, lengthens, removes easily… Basically, the whole shebang! The brush messes things up, though. It picks up way too much product, and unless I’m really good about removing the excess, the mascara ends up clumpy and messy. Too bad. It could’ve been great. The search continues.

Have a great rest of your Wednesday.

Fall Nails with OPI Malaga Wine, and Neighborhood Cat Politics

October 11th, 2022 by Karen 9 Comments

Well, hello reading glasses. I recently realized that in order to paint my nails successfully, I need to wear a pair in order to see what I’m doing. Yup, that train has arrived! And I am officially on it.

This beautiful shade by OPI is called Malaga Wine, and no joke, for the longest time I thought that it was called “Malaga Wino” because of OPI’s penchant for cheeky names. Maybe I should’ve looked at the name while wearing my reading glasses, ha ha ha!

It’s a gorgeous creamy reddish wine and very much a fall shade, and while Essie Angora Cardi will forever be my number one fall color, this is a close second. The version I have is from their Infinite Shine gel polish line, by the way, and I picked it up at Ulta. If you prefer a more traditional nail polish formulation, FYI, OPI also carries it in their regular nail polish line.

This is going to sound gross, but I kind of like how it looks like dried blood… I feel like it sends a subtle message to people not to mess with me. Side note: I wish somebody sat me down in high school to warn me that most of one’s work day is devoted to keeping a neutral face and voice while you silently rage inside.

Oh, and cat lady note, guess who stopped by this morning! My neighbor’s orange and white kitty Milo decided that he lives at our house, too. I’ve caught him rubbing the post right next to our door, an act we affectionately call “booping.”

Anyway, he left a whole bunch of boops at the front door this morning, and then he tried to actually go into our house. I was like, “Listen buddy, I love you, and you’re adorable, but Rosie-Pose will eff you up.”

I realize it’s a very cat lady thing to keep tabs on neighborhood cat politics, LOL!

Happy Tuesday to ya, and oh, before you go, let me know if you’re wearing fall-inspired nails today.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 750

October 10th, 2022 by Karen 19 Comments

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007).

1. One of your favorite things about fall beauty?

Ooh, the nail polish. Please give me all the deep and moody burgundies, greens and blues!

2. Candy corn: great or gross?

A little bit of both? I can handle a few nibbles, but there’s no way I’m eating a whole bag of candy corn.

3. In your neck of the woods, how big is the change in the fall leaves?

I live in a neighborhood with a lot of old trees that drop their leaves in the fall, and the change is pretty significant. It usually starts around the middle of October, and by the end of November, most of the trees are bare and the streets are carpeted in leaves.

4. Gray or brown eyeshadow?

Brown. Although I love how gray instantly adds the illusion of a deeper crease, brown requires less effort for me to blend.

5. Hot chocolate or hot tea?

Right now, a hot cup of green tea with a drizzle of honey and a squeeze of lemon sounds good.

6. A memorable Halloween costume?

In kindergarten I dressed up as Big Bird, and I wasn’t happy about it at all. I guess my parents were busy because even though they’d been in the U.S. for years and knew about Halloween, it never occurred to them that their five-year-old child would need a costume. So, the day before Halloween, we drove all over to find me something last minute, and everything was too big or too weird. I remember ending up at the Thrifty’s in our town and picking a Big Bird costume because it was the only thing that was available and would fit me. I guess I should’ve been glad I had something, but I mostly remember the disappointment.

7. Would you rather get a blowout or a mani/pedi?

I’ll take the mani/pedi!

8. Persimmons or apples?

Persimmons any day of the week.

9. The scariest movie you ever watched?

Oh gosh, for years I was terrified of the movie “Salem’s Lot.” One day after school, one of the older children at the babysitter’s house thought it was a good idea to play it on the VCR for a bunch of elementary school kids, and why they were able to get away with it, I will never know.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Here are the questions to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to ya soon.

1. One of your favorite things about fall beauty?

P.P.S. Happy, happy Monday, beautiful girl. Let’s have a productive and peaceful day. Here is a virtual *hug* to get your week off to a sweet start. Remember, you are very important and very loved. 🤗

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 731

October 9th, 2022 by Karen 3 Comments

Back when Tabs was the ruling force in the neighborhood, all of the felines knew that once fall arrived, it was time to turn up their fashion game. Inevitably, hats, jewelry, various accessories and the occasional tuxedo would all show up amongst the gang of felines parading around the circle.

Tabs’s most audacious outfit happened during the fall of 2011 when he showed up for a walk wearing a vegan leather moto getup from head to tail. Yes, they still talk about that around these parts…

One day a couple years ago, in a fit of heartbreak, I donated most of his fall couture to the Smithsonian, but sometimes I wish I could hug one of his old feather boas…

While a little said, I’m comforted by the fact that his legacy will live on through fashion posterity.

Rosie

Trust me, I tried to get Rosie-Pose to dress up today, but no matter how much I explained that this was the thing to do amongst the cats of the neighborhood, she absolutely refused. She looked up at me and went “MROW!” which, according to Google Translate, meant “NO THANK YOU! I dance to the beat of my own drum!”

So it was a simple collar and her favorite leash today.

Instead of parading around with the other local cats (I could have sworn I saw Harris sneaking around with a red bow tie.), she and Connor Claire spent their morning checking the perimeter for paranormal activity.

Rosie recently watched a documentary about ghost hunting, and is now fixated on proving the existence of paranormal cat activity. 👻🐈‍⬛

SCRUNCHIES!

Good morning and happy Caturday! We made it. 😀

Right meow, I’m way too excited to put my hair up in one of these scrunchies. LOL! I went on a hair accessory hunt yesterday and grabbed a few things from Target: Scrunchies in neutral tones, a pink oversized jaw clip, black hair ties that allegedly don’t damage your hair, and a shampoo and conditioner set by a brand new to me called Rhyme & Reason.

Have you tried anything from this line? They do shampoos, conditioners and treatments. While it’s on the pricier side for drugstore (it was $20 total for the shampoo and conditioner), it’s supposed to be good! Side note: I got the recommendation from Abby Yung, a YouTuber who’s videos I’ve been enjoying a lot! She has a lot of videos on healing damaged hair.

This week’s reading

  • Ozzy Osbourne just launched a makeup line. Thoughts?
  • The first fragrance recipe comes from modern day Iraq.
  • What it’s like to visit a cat convention. Side note: Sign me up!
  • Why you should train your cat, and how to do it.
  • Affordable drugstore skin care!
  • FYI, skin cycling does not involve a bike.
  • Why are celebrity men’s skin care lines booming?
  • OK, why isn’t Essie Angora Cardi on this list of best fall nail polish shades?

Well, I’ve believe I have arrived.

I’m low key obsessed!

Speaking of Lizzo…

Talk to me Abby.

Pretty!

I love smokey eyes.

What are you up to today? I hope that things on your end of the keyboard are relaxed and peaceful.

Scrunchies, the Unsung Heroes of the Hair World, and TGIF!

October 7th, 2022 by Karen 2 Comments

Need more scrunchies in my life

TGIF, my friend! Thank goodness we’ve reached the end of the week because last night I had yet another evening of elusive sleep, and I’m barely functional. This time the topic keeping me awake was — don’t laugh — scrunchies.

It recently occurred to me that I need to treat my mane with more TLC, so I’m going to lay off the curling iron and stick to hair accessories that are less likely to damage my strands.

During last night’s witching hour, I made a mental list of things I need to buy, including elastics made with hosiery (it’s a thing!), jaw clips and yes, scrunchies.

I want to get a few scrunchies in neutral colors — brown, tan, black, cream and taupe. If I find anything of note when I pop into Ulta and Sephora on the weekend, I’ll let you know.

Apparently since I already was up in the middle of the night, YouTube decided it would be a good time for me to fall into a 45-minute rabbit hole, LOL!

I somehow ended up on the Fitness Marshall’s channel, which eventually led me to dancing in my bathroom with the nightlight on at three in the morning.

I CANNOT BE THE ONLY PERSON WHO HAS DONE THIS. THERE HAS TO BE OTHERS.

Anyway, strangely enough, I kinda felt like I was at a club, except it wasn’t crowded, or dirty, or filled with dudes trying to touch my butt, and I was in my pajamas.

Be warned: Watching these clips may inspire you to put on a mesh shirt and enthusiastically shake your @ss.

LOL! Happy, happy Friday to you!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen
