Of Lists and Lashes: 15 Things I Learned Today About Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Mascara and Life

15 Things I learned today about Bobbi Brown’s Smokey Eye Mascara and life in general

  1. Today is a new day.
  2. The world is not falling apart. It only felt like that for a little while.
  3. It helps to set a timer when you write. Ten minutes is a good starting point. More than that, and you’re apt to spew a lot of crazy talk.
  4. When it comes to busting through writer’s block, don’t think too much. Avoid the urge to self-edit. Just dictate the words as you hear them in your head.
  5. It helps to read about writer’s block when you have it (go figure).
  6. A little light reading…

    • 3 Simple Steps for Staring Down Writer’s Block
    • How to Identify the Dread Writer’s Block and Its Relatives
    • How to Deal with Writers Block
    • Strategies for Overcoming Writer’s Block
    • Overcoming Writer’s Block
  7. The constant sound of construction in my neighborhood (it seems like all of my neighbors are doing work on their homes right now) is surely contributing to my agitation.
  8. It almost always helps to make lists.
  9. Playlists are also pretty cool.
  10. It also helps to straighten your hair (seriously), and flat irons are great.
  11. Also, random thoughts like, I wonder if I would ever date a man who used a flat iron (I’m guessing probably not).
  12. I wonder if I would ever date a man who regularly borrowed my mascara. Hmm… Perhaps.
  13. I’ve been wearing this new Bobbi Brown mascara for about a week.
  14. Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Mascara

  15. It’s (Bobbi’s Smokey Eye Mascara) really dark, like jet black (the pigment contains kohl), and I like how it makes my lashes look long and stretched out, but if you use a lash curler to curl your lashes beforehand, the formula will straighten them out. Quickly. In less than 10 minutes.
    Plain ol' lashes
    Plain ol’ lashes
Two coats of Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Mascara
Two coats of Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Mascara

It also doesn’t flake, smudge or clump, which is cool.

Bobbi’s website says the formula will give you dramatic lashes, and I guess if you haven’t reached drag-queen-in-training status yet like I have (girl, you know it’s true!), it’s pretty dramatic.

I love the length, but I find myself wanting more of everything else. More volume, better curl hold and more badabing-badabang.

    All told, yeah, I think it’s a’ight.

  16. PRICE: $28
AVAILABILITY: Available now at Bobbi Brown counters and also online
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: B

  17. Even with writer’s block, it’s important to remember that things could be worse. I could be covering town council meetings or high school bowling tournaments, where I would probably not be able to use phrases like “bling-tastic” and “drag-queen-in-training” as often.
  18. It always helps to hear someone say, “Everything is going to be alright.” 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Heart you back, my friend. I’m feeling better. It will take a while to fully recover, but I’m realizing that this is a part of being a working writer and it happens to everyone.

How’s your day been? Mine’s going OK. I’m about to put on some eyeliner just for fun.

Everyone has better and worse days in their jobs. There are days when I absolutely hate mine and I can only imagine how hard it must be to be that creative every day.

My day was mediocre at best. Lol. Hopefully tomorrow will be better although I have to work at 4am ;(

You’re so good at continually coming up with unique and interesting approaches to your reviews, so I suppose running up against a wall occasionally is just a part of the process. It’s been nice to see you work through it, thanks for being so open! Lists are the best.

      Hi Erin,

Lists are the best. They are a great way to get the juices flowing without too much commitment.

I hope you’re having a nice week so far. Almost Friday, hooray!

Hey – applaud yourself for continuing to write and work through the block! Most people just stop posting! You’re amazing, girl. Your posts are always so genuinely YOU – vivacious and FUN and different and surprising. I’d pass out if I came here and saw swatches and a robotic description of the colors/textures. You’re just yourself, and guess what? Yourself is allowed some time to say F it and eat some pumpkin-themed Trader Joe’s treats. Big hugs, chickadee!

I like the phrase, “This too shall pass.” It’s what I tell myself when things aren’t going my way; and while it may be a bit cliche, it always helps to hear it from someone too or pass it along. Great post. Thank you for the suggestions:-)

Karen, for what it’s worth, you are my favorite beauty blogger of them all (& trust me, I have many loves) because you are so real with your readers. I love it.

Thank you for everything <3. Your posts always bring a little respite from a crazy & complicated & screwed up world we live in, you know?

I always enjoy your posts, and a little hiccup now and then is totally understandable! I follow another blog, Psychology for Photographers, and she has a whole section on writing, interestingly enough. Reading hints like that get my creativity flowing! Thanks for keeping on writing, even when the writing gets tough! What would we do without our daily dose of pretty stuff from our friendly neighborhood beauty addict? 🙂

You’re still pretty dang inspiring, even when you have writer’s block! So everything is going to be alright :). I actually love this mascara. It gives me long, very long very black lashes, so while the volumising is indeed not dramatic I am happy with the result. And it NEVER smudges. This is worth gold.
