COVERGIRL Total Tease Mascara or Carnivorous Subtropical Plant?

July 20th, 2017 by Karen 13 Comments

covergirl total tease mascara review
Dude, that brush is CRAY-CRAY.

Girl, have you seen this mascara brush?? It is BANANAS.

Bananas. ?

It’s attached to COVERGIRL Total Tease Mascara and, as you can see, there’s a Venus flytrap-looking thing happening on one side of the brush…but the other side looks more traditional.

Venus flytrap?

The reason for the Venus flytrap contraption stems (Get it? Plant stem?? Sorry…) from the idea of backcombing, which is when you use a teasing comb to add volume. So, you use the traditional side of the brush to separate and lengthen your lashes from root to tip, then use the little teasing comb in those hard-to-reach areas, like the inner and outer corners (or, in my case, that missing patch of lashes on my right eye), to “tease” those lashes out and make them look longer and separated.

All about that separation and lift…

I’ve been all about this mascara lately. That slightly threatening-looking comb (it’s scary, right?) thoroughly combs through each and every lash to completely cover them in mascara. Even the littlest, stubbiest lashes!

Total Tease layers well too (even with other mascaras, if you’re into making your own mascara cocktails), so I can go Tammy Faye-style without any clumping, flaking or smudging. I like to layer it with Chanel le Volume or the new squeezable Dior mascara because it isn’t the best for the volume all by itself. So I’ll do a little Chanel or Dior at the base, then run a couple coats of Total Tease through my lashes for separation and length.

I think it’s a good deal for $8.99, but it’s also on BOGO right now at Ulta. In addition to the Very Black shade, which is the one I wear, it also comes in Black, Black Brown and a waterproof version.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

The brush reminds me of Buxom’s mascara brush. I think I feel a comparison post coming on for The Makeup Train……

Thanks, Veronica! It’s NARS Walk This Way, one of the new liquid matte lipsticks.

Hey, whatever works to get voluminous lashes! Even if that wand looks a little scary. 🙂 I’ve been bummed about my newish tube of Dinoplatz (flaking galore and isn’t coming off in those nice, little tubes I liked so much the first time around) but will finish it up. That’s the nice thing about Covergirl at $8.99. I wouldn’t feel as bad just chucking it.

      Hey Kim,

Bummer about your tube. Hmm… I can’t remember if there’s an expiration date on the box? Maybe next time check it before purchasing. I do that whenever I buy stuff at Sephora ever since I accidentally bought a bottle of Kate Somerville Anti-Bac that was on the shelf and within one month of its expiration date. GRR!

??? Love the analogy to the carnivorous subtropical plant!!! The things we do to get amazing lashes right? I’m all about trying this mascara now, so curious. Since it works, I don’t mind the threatening- looking brush 🙂

It’s not so scary once you get used to it. 🙂

Covergirl used to be one of my “go to” mascaras, the other being Max Factor 2000 Calorie. Then I started wearing department store brands. Now there are so many versions of drugstore mascara I never know which one to try. Sure a tube is less than $10, but if you try and discard enough of them it adds up. Might try this one though, especially if it layers well with Chanel Le Volume.

I almost picked this up just the other day – but thought I’d see what the reviews would be… It looked interesting, I thought it would really separate and lengthen. I think I’ll try it while I have some Chanel left too – what the heck? I was so disappointed in the Loreal! Since I have long lashes, it smudged all over! I didn’t much care for, or get any volume with it either. I find drug store (and most other) mascara’s so disappointing unless they’re really high end – and I sometimes don’t like those. I guess I’m a snob — but can’t afford to be. I recently tried MAC’s Upward lash — and I do like it — or the sample– guess it’s next on my list too. This gets old Karen…. and it isn’t for the faint of heart!!! I’m glad I finally figured out the false lash application routine in about 5 minutes…. it only took me about four months… Le Sigh….

Have a great evening…. from Gina and Gracie

      Hi Gina,

If you haven’t already you might want to try MAC Extended Play (it’s the one in the blue tube). It’s long lasting and doesn’t smudge! Happy Friday to you and pretty kitty Gracie from me and Tabs.

Awe thank you Ms. Karen!!! I (as you say) lurve Extended Play! I’m on my third tube!! I use it for my bottom lashes and it ROCKS! I even hit the ends after the Le Volume and it makes them even longer!!! I used the Big Shot yesterday and I liked it, but I had little crumblies after a bit – so that one’s out. AH! The struggle girl!!! I wish Extended play gave just a bit more volume – it would be my holy grail. Back to the drawing board. Gonna try Total tease next!! Kiss the coy wolf for me, and scratch Tabs…. have a Super Saturday!!!!!

Lol, love the Tammy Faye reference! I’m not huge on those plastic type mascara wants (I actually don’t think I own any) but this might be a nice addition to my collection in order to kind of comb out my lashes if I get out of hand on volume (guilty).
