Dior Misty Mauve 5-Colour Eye Palette, Meet MAC Satin Taupe

July 22nd, 2010 by Karen 70 Comments

dior misty mauve swatches review photos

I know it’s a little unusual to start a Dior review with a question about MAC, but here goes: do you do MAC Satin Taupe eyeshadow? It’s a shimmery purplish taupe in MAC’s permanent line and a staple in a great many makeup bags (I love it too).

If it’s also a favorite of yours, take a gander at the new Dior Misty Mauve 5-Colour Eye Palette.

This $58 princess is one of two new eye palettes Dior released with their fall collection (the other being Pink Design), and it shimmies onto lids with five cool-toned shades — a shimmery light pink, a shimmery white, a shimmery purplish taupe, a matte taupe and a shimmery mauve — that MAC Satin Taupe should get along with quite nicely.

Misty doesn’t need the help, though. She can also stand on her own, and when I slipped her on my lids this morning, I marveled at how well the included colors complement each other, blending sans muss or fuss.

Methinks it’s one of the more user-friendly palettes (especially if you like shimmer) to hail from the House of Dior in many moons.

When it comes to shimmer, Misty Mauve has it in spaces. Dior did add one matte shadow to keep fans on their toes…but the other four shimmer like sunlight through glass (borderline frosty even).

Wearing Misty Mauve

Dior may have priced the palette out of reach for many, but $58 isn’t totally unreasonable for a good department store quint (here’s one from Guerlain’s fall line for $84!).

I really like these colors for what they are (shimmery AND wearable), and I applaud Dior for everything except the price. If you wear mauves, purples and taupes on a regular basis, Misty Mauve might be worth a closer look. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B+

Apparently I’m on a return kick. The glasses are going back. They were uncomfortable. I had them adjusted but still no joy. So so sad as they were so dang cute. Was going to give them a few more days but as I was walking home yesterday I passed another optician and a pair in their window grabbed me. Smaller, lighter frame in a dark, translucent green. I pick them up tomorrow.

Yeah, I think the universe is telling me to take a shopping break. I weighed both glasses and the new ones were 50% heavier then my old ones – I think that was the problem. They don’t seem that much bigger so I was surprised to see that.

Those rock! I tried on a pair of retro cat’s eyes frames and loved them, but not for everyday. I could see getting a cheaper fun second pair. I wound up getting this brand http://www.prodesigndenmark.com/Default.aspx?ID=126&GroupID= frame #1665 in petrol — a dark green with hints of blue and grey. They felt great the minute I put them on. I think they may have messed up the lenses on the other glasses.

      Hi Kristine,

I got ’em a few weeks back, but I think they just finally started lightening up enough to show up in pics. 🙂

As for the quint, it depends on what types of purples play well with your skin. I know for me purples with red or burgundy tones give me that bruised look, so I didn’t really have trubs with these colors. These are more violet/lilac, so if you wear those colors well it could look great on you!

I think Dior has the best eyeshadow formula in terms of pigmentation and blendability. I’m glad they included a matte shadow in this, I haven’t seen them do any mattes in a long, long time.

Also I finally found a combo that photographs really well — Laura Mercier Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer topped with a 50/50 mix of MAC Prep+Prime and MAC Blot buffed in with a kabuki brush.
