Dior Sparkle Shine Glitter Top Coat For Lips Gets the Party Started

November 11th, 2008 by Karen 44 Comments

If a tube of glitter lipgloss looks like something a gang of tween girls would wear to a Miley Cyrus concert, I usually stay far away. It’s just when glitter goes wrong it can go *really* wrong, you know?

There are those rare times, though, when a truly dynamic glitter gloss takes my breath away. That magical feeling swept over me when I first marveled at Dior Sparkle Shine Glitter Top Coat for Lips ($24.50), a limited edition lipgloss from the Dior Night Diamond holiday collection.

Imagine sucking on a disco ball lollipop for hours; that’s the effect Sparkle Shine gives lips. Infused with a plethora of large green, blue, pink, gold and silver glitter pieces, this bad boy is the mutha of glitter glosses.

Girrrrl… This Is GOOD GLITTER

Dior really should call this stuff glitter with a touch of gloss.

While there are many elegant glitter lipglosses out there, like Chanel Galactic Glossimer, Sparkle Shine stands out because it contains an abundance of glitter (I’m guessing double the average amount).

When I put it on I see all these intense layers of multi-colored glitter pieces reflecting and sparkling in the light. There’s so much packed in the gloss it looks almost 3-D, like the glitter is about to jump off the lips and come straight at ya!

It’s not just the amount of glitter that creates this otherworldly effect. The size of the pieces plays a big part. Large glitter flecks can make a gloss look like play/pretend makeup made for kids, but Sparkle Shine’s pieces are just big enough to catch your eye without being so large that they look childish.

A Few Things to Consider

There are a few tradeoffs for all this glittery goodness. Sparkle Shine feels very sticky on the lips, and when I rub my lips together I can feel grittiness, which I’m not crazy about.

Dior Sparkle Shine Glitter Top Coat for Lips

Price: $24.50
Use: To add glittery shine to lips
Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A

And because Dior is a luxury makeup line, it’ll cost you a pretty penny. However, a little goes a long way. I only need a single layer to get the disco lips effect! I’m thinking this would be fabulous paired with a bright pink lipstick like MAC Hollywood Nights. OoOoo — I just might wear that lip combo on New Year’s Eve!

Extra Cheer, Please

I guess I needed a little bit of glitter to cheer me up today because El Hub hopped on a plane headed to Hawaii early this morning to be with his mom. It’s only been a day and I miss him already, so I’ve been looking through our wedding pictures all afternoon.

Maybe to cheer myself up I’ll throw a raging kegger while he’s gone! Or, maybe I’ll just stay at home with Tabs, order some take-out veggie Pad Thai and watch No Reservations on DVD.

How was your Tuesday? I hope many good things happened to you today.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

mmm-good! too bad that chanel was limited edtion (I just re-read the old post). I actually like that it had a little less glitter than the dior….but this is gorgeous. And I actually like sticky glosses, LOL. I think a bright pink with this would be perfect for New Year’s-maybe with a cat eye too?

Best wishes for El Hub’s family, and you too. I know it’s hard when all the family is going thru a crisis and you are not there. My whole family is in another state, and my grandpa had to be admitted to the hosptial. He’s better now but I hated not being there, ya know?

My hubby is going to be gone for one night this weekend too-just one night, but still. I’m trying to decide between Penelope or Definitly, maybe from the netflix.

All I can offer right now is a humongous hug for you while El Hub’s gone – prayers and wishes for his family, too!

Not too sure about glittery lip gloss, but maybe I’ll try this one once I get the chance. There was this pot gloss from BeneFit that I once tried, but I looked like I snacked on Tinkerbell when I wore it, LOL.

Also, I forgot to post this yesterday – but re: body splashes with oils, I’ve been experimenting with patchouli for food-like fragrances with vanilla or coconut in them. Will probably post more in my blog later!

    Hi Amanda,

It’s your lucky day! I was just at the Chanel counter and it turns out that Galactic still around. 🙂

OoOo — good call on the cat eye. Maybe I’ll do a silver wash on the lid since the lips will be so flashy.

I’m glad to hear that your grandpa is doing better. Do you live very far away from your family? Although I love visiting my in-laws in Hawaii there are times we all lived closer together. I just have to keep my fingers crossed and hope that the next few days will have some good news.

El Hub will be back this weekend, so it looks like I’ll be watching lots of chick flicks and eating tons of vegetarian dishes until then. It’s weird to not have him around the house. He’s the one who always gets up at 4 am to let Tabs out. I guess I’ll be the one to do it tonight (this morning?), eek!

I vote for Definitely, Maybe for your weekend movie! It’s really cute. 🙂

That is definitely too glittery. I like MAC Sugarrimed Dazzleglass. I like the shimmer I get from it.

No Reservations is actually a good movie. I didn’t think that it wouldn’t but I really liked it.

Everything will be ok. Definitely thinking positive thoughts.

    Hi Meimei,

Thank you very much… it’s good to feel like I’m not at home alone. Well, Tabs is here, too, LOL!

Like you, I’m very picky about my glitter glosses, and I’m tellin’ ya, this one isn’t Tinkerbell-y at all. It’s actually pretty and grown-up looking. 🙂

Your fragrance Frankenstein mixes sound yummy. I bet the mixes smell very warm and tasty. Perfect for fall/winter!

I thought it would be too when I first swatched it on my hand. But really, it’s fabulous!

I’m off to the video store and to pick up some Pad Thai. I hope the movie is there!

hey karen! thank god the week is half over.
i would love to share my dance comp pictures with you!

    OOOH
    looks fun!
totally love lip gloss, so i may have to give this one a go! i might layer it over a fun pink lip, like you said, to jazz it up for a girl-hot look (boyfriend is going to hate this one, it’ll get stuck in his stubble)!

having a horrible library day (aka sweatpants and chapstick under flourescent lighting, looking at all the similarly disheveled and unhappy students sitting next to me) but makeup never fails to brighten my day, as does coffee!

have a great rest of the week!

    Hi Ines,

I’m so with you! I am ready for the weekend!

LOL, boys always seem to prefer “the natural look.” Little do they know it takes 12 products to get there! El Hub hates when I get glitter up in his stubble too, but I think at this point he’s just given up. 🙂

Hang in there… just a few more days and a few more tests and then you’ll get to reap the benefits of all that studying. Perhaps you should bribe yourself with makeup. That always works for me.

I love me some glitter! My very good friend and I used to get all dressed up for a night out and we would say…”lets get glitterific tonight”! Yes we were 21, and such dorks! Our favorite glitter to use was Tony and Tina loose glitter that I would mix with clear lip gloss to create crazy looks on the eyes! Ah, those were the days!

I will be thinking about you and your family, I hope you can keep your self busy while the hubby is gone…I know its hard.

I love your wedding photo! So pretty!!

Glitter is like sequined dresses. They’re both funky-looking in natural daylight, but at night, under the right lights… magic!

Tabs spent the entire day (and most of the evening) sleeping. He just ate some Fancy Feast. Yup. Such a tough life. 🙂 I really hope he stays comatose through the night… if he gets fired up (FIRED UP!) at 4 am I’m screwed.

The Dior lipgloss reminds me of the covergirl wetshine lipgloss in clear, but with a lot of sparkle. I remember getting it from the dollar store, but I was not satisfied with the texture. It felt like a cheap watery lipgloss. But it sure looks pretty!

    Hi Karen,

I was actually chatting with one of my regional managers who had breast cancer 8 years ago about her battle last week and she was so incredibly positive about her experience it really maes you realise that its more than possible to come out of it the other side a stronger person! I hope if you have to go through something so horrible as a family at least you can draw strength from that.

The Dior holiday collection is far too tempting!! I just bought the diamond shine hightlighter in the jeweled compact it is absolutely beautiful, the powder is so finely milled that the shine looks almost natural!

Thoughts and prayers to you, your husband and MIL right now. It will be ok! Hug Tabs a lot if he will let you 🙂

No Reservations is a cute movie, and Aaron Eckhart is adorable in it…

Love the glitter gloss, but not sure I can deal with the gritty stuff, though. Headed to Chicago’s Magnificent Mile to check out the Christmas decorations and the deals on Saturday. Supposed to have snow showers, so that might put me in the Christmas spirit 🙂 Maybe I’ll have to check out that gloss in person. I live in the boonies, so we don’t have those brands at the local department stores…

    Take care!

i am so lovin this – i tried an urban decay gloss very similar to this but it had a clear pink base but it came in a palette so i passed on it i hate lip palettes they always get super messy at least for me

my best wishes again to you and your fam – my mom is actually considering a masectomy even though her radiation treatments went well along with her taking tamoxifen being her cancer was hormonally related the safest bet if the cancer hasnt travelled to the lymph nodes is to remove the breast to reduce the chance of reccurence even less

i am sure el hubs mom will recover well this will definitely make her a stronger woman and bring the family closer together

    Hi Karen B.,

It’s okay. I felt that the 2001 German version it was based on called Mostly Martha was better. The characters and story line in the German version were more complex; the stakes also felt higher. No Reservations is still worth watching, though, if you want a simple chick film to cheer you up.

    Hi Karen,

I have a stupid number of powders too but this one really is something special, I bought a bare minerals one last week and really dont rate it, the glitter is too chunky but this Dior one is beautiful although I do think it has something to do with the fact that the pink tone works really well with my colouring as I tried it on my friend who has dark brown hair and a similar skin tone to me and somehow it just didnt look the same!

Its kinda freaky really, that regional manager I was telling you about came into work tonight for a surprise visit which is really really weird as she never ever does that!
