If You Throw Me a Line, Make It Velvet Rope: New NYX 10 Color Eyeshadow Palette in Velvet Rope

November 11th, 2010 by Karen 42 Comments

Oh, my goodness! Look at all that purple. Is this a Prince video or a beauty blog? 🙂

Today I left the thugs to their gangsta’s paradise while I escaped yet again to my purple one. I could go on and on about how much I love purple eyeshadow, but the No. 1 reason why I think every girl (or makeup loving boy, for that matter) should play with purple is because of how great it goes with everything.

Alright, I admit I’m plum biased, but I think purple looks great on almost everyone. Whether brown, green, gray, blue or hazel eyes, the right purple on your lid or lash line can make those peepers

POP! Yeah, I use that word a lot…but you know what I mean.

Now, brace yourself for a plethora of purple, and behold the new NYX Velvet Rope 10 Color Eyeshadow Palette ($9.75)!

nyx velvet rope eyeshadow palette runway collection review swatches photos

It’s one of four newcomers to NYX’s permanent “The Runway Collection” family of slim, trim eye palettes, each of which hold 10 pans of powder eyeshadow in coordinating shades.

You may be thinking, “Did Barney explode in that palette?” Haha! I assure you, he did not.

As you can see, most of the shades are purples, but NYX incorporated a few other colors to spice things up.

Despite being a budget brand, NYX does some things very well, one of them being eyeshadows. I think they’re among the best!

Not knowing these were from NYX, I would have never guessed they were less than $10, not being as smooth as they are with this kind of pigment. I’m beginning to think of NYX as the Marshalls of the eye makeup world — proprietors of great value products.

If you’re already a fan of the brand, you might have noticed that several of the shades in Violet Rope look like colors from the company’s summer stunner, the Purple Smokey Eye Kit. Yup, several of the colors are the same, but this new palette’s got one major thing going for it — BIGGER PANS!

They’re big enough to use with larger eyeshadow brushes, which means being able to cover more ground on my lids per pass and bang out looks that much faster.

That may not seem like it would make a huge difference, but if you’re always running at least 15 minutes late to everything like I am, even something like the ability to use a slightly bigger brush can save time.

I also think the larger pans are butterfinger- and beginner-friendly.

You might not need Velvet Rope if you already have the Purple Smokey Kit, but you still may want it. 🙂

Purple riders, mount up!

PRICE: $9.75
AVAILABILITY: At drugstores, Ulta and other locations online.

Looks like a deal to me! I don’t usually wear purple/berry shades but if they were all in one palette maybe I would 🙂

This palette has one thing going for it that the Smokey Look palette does not… a highlighter shade! Every time I use SL, I think how much better it would be if one light shade had been included!

      Hi Alison,

That’s a good point. The pink shade has the cutest little sparkles, too. It would be great as a wash of color on the lid for busy days.

Do you use the lipsticks in Smokey Look often? I hardly ever open the drawer!

I’ve only used the lipsticks in Smokey Look once or twice. I feel like the gold/bronze-y shade isn’t the best match with the purple shadows, and the nude shade is a little hard to wear. I worry that it makes me look a bit corpse-like!

I thought it was kind of an odd pairing, too. I guess they wanted to do something unexpected? It would’ve been nice to have a shimmery pink… or maybe something with a touch of violet. 🙂

I believe NYX has a 10 color palette just like this one called “Champagne & Caviar”, lots of pretty browns, bronzes and taupes 🙂

      Hi Glosslizard,

Most excellent! I like how they threw in a blue just to mix things up and keep us on our toes. 🙂

BTW, I got my Panthera mascara in the mail today. The cat head tube is kinda scary!

Really?! I have tried it and didn’t like the wet consistency. It wouldn’t dry on my lashes.
You seem to rock it, though.

I love the effect, but hate how the tube dries out so quickly. 🙁

Have you tried Chanel Exceptionnel? It gives lashes the a very similar effect.

You are right, Karen! I have Purple Smokey Look Kit, but I still want this palette! There’s nothing like a full-fledged eyeshadow palette! 🙂

Very lovely EOTD. Like the combi of purple-pink with blue on the lower lash line.

So many pretty colors, and you’re right about the bigger pans. What a difference! I really have a soft spot for this make-up look. It’s like 80s inspired, but so much prettier. 🙂

You got me thinking about NYX again. I have the Runway palette – I should play with that one and see what I can create with it. I do like the soft texture I just wish that each pan was equally pigmented. I can hate thought with that nice price!

I also love that it’s a sponsor of RuPaul’s Drag Race and Drag U – if it’s good enough for the girly boys then it’s good enough for us, RIGHT?

Do you know if NYX is available at Walgreens or CVS, perhaps? I looked on their website but it didn’t say where to buy their products.

    Thanks!
