Lancome’s Deluxe Brush Set and Fashion Case Is Like Little Purple Kisses

November 23rd, 2009 by Karen 59 Comments

Yes, it’s pricey with short little handles (I prefer ’em long), and the giant plastic gems on the clutch look *hella* cheesy, but DAGNABBIT if these brush heads aren’t softer than a baby’s kiss.

Lancome’s Deluxe Brush Set ($60), one of two Lancome limited edition brush sets for the holidays, makes me wanna shoop!

Lancome-Deluxe-Brush-Set-Expert-Collection-brushes-and-case
Brushes on left, clutch on right

Lancome-Deluxe-Brush-Set-Expert-Collection-all
From left to right: powder brush, foundation brush, domed blending brush, dual-ended concealer/angled liner brush and flat eyeshadow brush

Deluxe comes with five basic eye and face brushes, complete with a matching clutch. The brushes apply and blend like dreams — good dreams. 🙂 My favorite, the powder brush, feels more luxurious than cashmere against my skin. I’d wear it like a sweater if I could.

What do you think about the purple brush heads? Cute twist? Don’t they seem edgy yet classy at the same time?

Lancome-Deluxe-Brush-Set-Expert-Collection-inside-case
Snug as a bug in a rug!

Six pieces, including the clutch, which works out to $10 each — not nearly as easy on the pocketbook as Sonia’s $20 holiday brush set, but, luckily, they aren’t half bad. Exceptionally soft (the powder brush feels like it’s worth $40 by itself), and I think they look fantastic. Too bad Lancome couldn’t have knocked off a couple of bucks, le sigh. And wouldn’t it be awesome if they came in more colors (hint hint)? Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B+

You might like Lancome’s Deluxe Brushes if…

  • You’re into purple
  • You prefer your brushes with short handles
  • You’re looking to indulge yourself or someone else
  • You want to upgrade your basic makeup brushes

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. How was your Monday? Anything exciting happen?

Ohhhhhhhh, those are divine bristles. Purple is my favorite color. However, I like my handles longer. I’m really accustomed to handling my Loew-Cornells when I decide to paint. Loew-Cornells are wickedly long (I think my longest is 10″ from the top of the ferrule to handle base). I also use them for make-up brushes. Dirt cheap but veeeeeeery soft.

Also, I’ve noticed, compared to my actual brushes made for make-up, my Loew-Cornells are a 100 times softer and blend 2x better. Who says you need expensive brushes for make-up? Each one of my Cornells cost less than $10.

I’ve heard lots of ladies love using paint brushes for makeup brushes. It’s a good money-saving tip. 🙂

It is much cheaper. MAC brushes are glorified paint brushes when you think about it. Both (Loew and MAC) have synthetic or animal bristles, a silver or gold ferrule and a wooden handle. I’ll take the actual mop-head paint brush that looks, blends and acts just like a 217/222/224 for $4.69 over the $28 for the 224. The heads of each brush look EXACTLY then same. The artist lives for bargains. 🙂

I’ll have to disagree with you on MAC brushes being glorified paint brushes. Love mine!

What paint brushes do you suggest & where can I find them? I’m on a budget & MAC’s makeup brushes are waayyyy too pricey for me.

            Nicole,

Here’s a few videos where you can start:

            MAV vs. Loew-Cornell

MAC 239 vs. MAC 217 vs. MAC 224 vs. Loew-Cornell

If you’re vegan, though, you’re out of luck. I don’t know any of the synthetic brushes that Loew-Cornell produces (they do have a synthetic range). Synthetic bristles are good for liquid foundation and that’s about it.

When you go to the craft store, you want to look for goat or squirrel hair for bristles as that what MAC uses. The best places are craft stores geared for crafts (like Michaels) and not for fabric (JoAnns). There’s greater selection. Pig hair is far too harsh. I’m not sure about horsetail hair though. Horsehair typically is normally reserved for high-quality, uber-expensive paintbrushes. Talkon bristles typically equates expensive as well.

Some people do state that paint brushes are only for paints and make-up brushes are only for make-up, but MAC uses the EXACT same bristles that Loew-Cornell uses. Bristles aren’t like paint, where they can be suited for only certain items (semi-gloss, eggshell, latex, etc.). It’s preference based mainly. I like natural over synthetic and longer handles than shorter handles.

I have that powder brush. I’ve had it (not in purple) since last spring (it was a total last-minute, spur-of-the-moment, grab-as-I-walked-to-the-Sephora-counter splurge). I ADORE it. I actually can’t tell you how much I love that brush. I bought a second one to keep at work, just so that if I’m having a bad day, I can brush it over my face. It is so soft, and so . . . SOFT! It applies my loose powder perfectly, and sometimes I use it again after I’m done, just to get rid of any edges that I might have from my blush. RIDICULOUSLY LOVE THAT BRUSH 🙂

I’m SO GLAD to hear that somebody else besides me loves this! I thought I was being a freak show about it but it’s sooooo soft, right?

Hee, I’m thinking a second one needs to come into my life, ASAP!

I’m tempted to buy the set, because I live that powder brush so much . . . I’m sure to love the others, right? 🙂 They had this set in indigo for the Nordies sale over the summer, and I managed not to but it then. I don’t know if my will is that strong now . . .

And did you see that all four new colors in the UD Super Stash will be available in full size in their spring collection? I guess I will be purchasig yet more of those 🙂 I should start making lists of the ones I don’t own, it’d be easier than listing the ones I do! Although being able to name all of them helps me feel less guilty about the money I’ve spent . . . I use them so much that I know them all by name!

Thank you for inspiring me to play with makeup and have fun with it. You do an amazing job with this site, and I am sure that many others will agree with me that I feel like you are good friend!

Thanks for being such a great online buddy! I feel so lucky to have met so many amazing women through MBB. 🙂

This is gonna sound totally OCD but one thing I like to do with items that I have multiple colors of is to keep a swatch card. It’s basically just an index card with a tiny swatch of the different colors and a short description next to them. If you do that with your UD liners then you’ll always have a reference in one handy place; each time you get a new one you can just add it onto the card!

That sounds JUST like my type of OCD . . . I’m a perfectionist, and when I can’t do something right, I tend not to do it . . . I will definitely have to make that swatch card when I get home! I feel like people haven’t believed me when I talked about how amazing that brush is, so to see you raving about it is a great justification. If anyone questions me or doubts me, I’ll just pass them on to you (and maybe get them hooked on MBB, too!).

These brushes are *beautiful* 🙂 I’m not very fond of the price, however I probably should be, since I basically spend the same amount for MAC brush sets. I’m in love with the idea of that dual-ended brush. Theoretically, it’d take up less space if I had an entire set of brushes; all with dual ends. Do you know of any sets like that?

I might be a little crazy but when you described the powder brush I swear I felt it swirl against my cheek 😛 I like how it’s a gradient of color instead of a full on purple brush head. Sephora has brushes like that now and I feel like they look like silly skittle brushes. I agree the clutch looks a wee bit tacky like those holiday palettes from MAC last year but I think the brushes make up for that. They are beautiful *drools
