More a Slow Burn Than a Blaze, Sheer NARS Disco Inferno Nail Polish

January 15th, 2013 by Karen 21 Comments

NARS Disco Inferno Nail Polish
NARS Disco Inferno Nail Polish ($18), from the new spring 2013 collection

How do you feel about sheer nail polishes? If you answered, “Yes! Love ’em. Gimme-gimme-gimme!” I’d like to direct your attention to a Disco Inferno.

NARS Disco Inferno. It’s from their new 2013 spring collection, and I see it as a provocative counterpoint to the makeup it parties with in the release.

“Intense” barely comes close to describing many of the color products in the collection. This spring at NARS has been a full-on pigment party.

But for nails, the brand decided to go a different, sheerer route.

I like it in the context of the rest of the collection — the contrast between the vibrant, 1,000-watt stereo pigment products, and Disco Inferno’s almost whisper of color.

Sure, if you don’t like sheer nail polishes, this won’t light your fire, but if you do, look out!

Like a real fire, Disco Inferno plays with light. It’s constantly changing colors.

It also reminds me of a mermaids tail…

No, not a tale like, “Once upon a time, a lonely mermaid longed to walk along the shore above her underwater world.”

Nope. Tail, as in T-A-I-L.

Have you ever seen a rainbow trout? How it’s side is almost holographic?

Or pigeon feathers? Wait — that’s kind of gross…

I’ve been wearing Inferno for a few days. From some angles, I see green; from others, grey; and from others still, a dusky purple shines through.

In this swatch I’m wearing three layers, but I also like the way it looks with one, where you can see more of the underlying nail.

Looks pretty darn cool.

After a few days with it on, there are a few chips at the edges…but I did not apply a base or top coat, so there’s that. A base and top coat would surely help.

Sure isn’t for me normally, but I bet this would look awesome over an opaque solid color. Maybe like a muted brown. Then, yes, I would totally love this. 😉

I had such great expectations for this, but I hate sheer nail polish…Guess there is not much of the duochrome left when layered over black or white?

I find it a bit of a pity it’s sheer, but that’s because I’m not a fan of sheer nail polishes. Perhaps it’ll be really wacky layered on top of a black creme!

Perhaps…or maybe a dark purple would be cool.

I like the colour but I wish it was more pigmented. Sheer polishes aren’t my thing.

It is a pretty color, but I don’t know if I could wear this for a whole week. Maybe for a girls night out or a date. Seems like it needs a base color. Like Rachel said, maybe black. 😀

I have to agree, I bet this would look gorgeous over black, navy or dark
    Purple!

Hmn I thought it was going to be more opaque. I’m betting this would look great as a top coat for lighter shade polishes too. Lilac purple, mint green, and baby blue immediately come to mind.

I hope this is available for swatching when I get to Sephora on Friday. I am definitely curious.

Oooh, Sephora trip! Are you going to pick up something specific, or just look around? I might stop by tonight (famous last words).

I’m using my complimentary VIB makeup session on Friday! I just told the guy booking me for the appointment I’ve been going nuts putting on makeup with my winter skin (oily T-zone and dry cheeks). Hopefully miracles will abound and my skin will be happy with makeup again.

I want to check if any spring collections are out at the Sephora on Powell. The NARS collection has that finishing powder that every blogger and their mother is raving about. If there’s time I’ll go to Macy’s and invade the Inglot counter.

Oh NICE. Any idea of the look you’re going to try? Whenever I go in there and sit in the chair, I just say, “Go frickin’ crazy.” LOL

I’m wearing that new NARS powder right now, btw. 🙂

I really like the color but I wish it wasn’t so sheer. I have short nail beds and with sheer polishes, they sort of look funny. Lol

Very pretty! I actually really like this, though I doubt I will get it. When it comes to my nails, I usually like a bright, opaque wash of color. I wonder how this would look layered over an opaque cream…

What a pretty color! But I think this polish looks more prettier over a black base polish.

Burn, baby, burn. 🙂 I actually prefer sheer colors for my fingernails because I’m lazy and can’t be bothered with a base or top coat (and chips and wear are much harder to spot with the sheers). I’m not sold on the green aspect of this, but do like the gray/purple. Rainbow trout was a great example!
