Smashbox Enchantress Beauty Kit: Yes, We Can All Get Along

November 28th, 2008 by Karen 13 Comments

Okay, I’ll fess up — the pewter clutch and silver necklace that come with the Smashbox Enchantress Beauty Kit ($45) were the real reasons why this limited edition set first caught my eye, but, as it turns out, they were just icing on the cake.

Enchantress, one of eight limited edition holiday makeup sets from Smashbox this year, also comes with some highly wearable makeup — Lip Enhancing Gloss in Protege, That’s a Wrap Mascara in Black, Cream Eye Liner Duo in Caviar/Midnight Brown and Soft Lights Quad in Aglow.

Each of the items in the set play well together, and I used them for the makeup I wore to my parents’ house for dinner last night.

Lip Enhancing Gloss in Protege

The nude gloss is my favorite item the set. A shimmery warm pink with golden pearl, Protege looks good with smokey eyes, and the thin formula, which smells faintly of cinnamon, doesn’t feel overly sticky to the touch.

Like most glosses, Protege doesn’t last all day/night (about two hours per application), but by filling in my lips first with Chanel Nude Lip Liner, I managed to squeeze out an extra hour of wear time. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A

Clockwise from left: Soft Lights Quad in Aglow, Cream Eye Liner Duo in Caviar/Midnight Brown, Lip Enhancing Gloss in Protege and That’s a Wrap Mascara in Black

Soft Lights Quad in Aglow

I mixed together the four shimmery highlighting powders — peach, rose, pearl and pink — that come with this quad with a MAC 187 Duo Fibre Brush in the pan and then applied the shimmery golden pink mix to my cheeks and nose.

Aglow’s highlighting powders may not be as fine or as pigmented as MAC Beauty Powders, but they do leave a pretty glow without making my skin look oily. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B

That’s a Wrap Mascara in Black

That’s a Wrap excels at lengthening and separating lashes, grabbing onto the smallest, stubbiest lashes and drawing them up and out, and it holds the curl all day long, too. But all that awesomness is offset by its mediocre lash thickening power, which is too bad for me because I need a mascara that really pumps up the volume. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B

Cream Eye Liner Duo in Caviar/Midnight Brown

With a pointed eyeliner brush like the MAC 209, Cream Eye Liner creates some very pretty, soft lines. This particular duo comes with two shades, Caviar (a matte gray-black) and Midnight Brown (a matte red-brown). Both are creamy, extra smudgy and ideal layered beneath eyeshadows for smokey eyes. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B

I like Enchantress (available online only) because the items work well together as a cohesive set, which I like because that’s not always the case. I swear, sometimes it seems like companies fill limited edition sets with all the products they couldn’t unload any other way, LOL!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Wow, nice set! I may get this set after all 🙂 The items seem to work well together but how is the standing power of the eyeliner? I have oily lids, just want to make sure.

Hi Karen! I’ve been lurking here for a while, and I would like to come out and say that all of the beauty products you’ve walked past me have been a really terrible influence on my budget, but I love reading your blog anyway. It was such a pleasure to find a beauty blogger who isn’t obsessed with being a porcelain princess and absolutely rocks the skin she’s in!

Your reviews have tempted me to buy something quite a few times, but I was able to resist–until now. I just bought this for myself, also mainly for the clutch and necklace, waah. Could not resist. The look of the lipgloss helped, but the multiple pockets in the clutch was what really sold me, so thanks (my wallet is putting air quotes around the thanks, but let’s ignore it for now) for the overhead shot!

    Hi Dao,

The eyeliner is very emollient, so I mostly like it for layered smokey eye looks. If I use it by itself (sans primer beneath or shadow on top) then it moves all over the place. If your lids are super oily then be sure to wear primer and then layer a shadow on top. 🙂

    Hi CSB,

Heya! It’s very nice to meet you… thanks for saying hello!

OH, btw, I think you’ll love that purse. It fits a ton of stuff and feels very soft (big plus) in your hand. The necklace is super cute in person, too. 🙂

    Hi Luv J,

I hear ya! It’s hard for me to say no, especially when I can justify saving money on stuff I’d probably buy separately anyway!
