The Many Highlights of MAC High-Light Powder in Crew

May 17th, 2012 by Karen 31 Comments

Don’t tell the rest of my makeup this…but I’ve been showing product favoritism toward highlighting powders lately, as evidenced by the forlorn, shimmery creams and liquids gathering dust in the corner of my office.

Currently docked in the port of my daily makeup bag? The new MAC Hey, Sailor! Highlight Powder in Crew ($29).

mac crew highlight powder
High-Light Powder in Crew, $28

The four purple, pink, orange and yellowish beige shades in this superfine pressed powder swirl together seamlessly, creating a combined color that adds a peachy, pinkish beige glow to the skin.

No glitter here! Crew’s pearly sheen glows softly, like light passing through a seashell (very Becca-esque). From some angles, I think it even looks matte.

And second to the snazzy design on the pan, the finish is my favorite thing about High-Light Powder in Crew.

It’s just so forgiving! — unlike highlighting powders super high in shimmer and shine, which can call attention to every single flake and pore on my cheeks. Crew, on the other hand, makes my skin glow without highlighting (pun intended) every imperfection.

It’s a fresh-faced look, like I’ve been tooling around the Bay on a sailboat with Detective Stabler, the wind sweeping my hair as we share guava mimosas and feed each other grapes and cheese.

Mmm…cheese (SIDE NOTE: the non-dairy experiment is not going well).

Highlights of MAC High-Light Powder in Crew…

  • It’s a limited edition product in the new Hey, Sailor! collection
  • The stripes aren’t over-sprays; they go all the way to the bottom of the pan (don’t ask me how I figured this out; it was painful!)
  • The powders are very pigmented; one layer gives me a fresh glow
  • The combined color should show up on most skin tones, and it could probably double as a blush for some guys/gals
  • It glides like satin on skin
  • The powder looks and feels lightweight, and it applies smoothly and evenly
  • Either on both bare or atop foundation, it lasts from 7-9 hours on me
  • Guys/gals concerned about large-looking pores might really like this a lot (because I think it has the opposite effect, making pores appear smaller)

Crew might not be flashy enough for sailors seeking bolder looks, but if you prefer subtler shores, consider sailing these waters. 🙂

PRICE: $29
AVAILABILITY: Available now at maccosmetics.com, and coming May 24 to MAC counters and stores
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A (it does seem a little pricey)

Beep beep! Yeah, toot toot!

My fave Donna Summer song, evah!

R.I.P., Donna Summer. Back when I was in college, whenever I’d drive home from Davis to the Bay, I’d listen to Donna’s greatest hits CD over and over on the two-hour trip.

And I can’t even count how many times my friend Jen and I rocked out to Bad Girls back in high school when we’d cruise around town in her Nissan Sentra (like rock stars!).

Big sigh… Do you have a favorite Donna song?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

      Hi Agata!

I’m really enjoying this collection. It’s so fun and really beautiful. 🙂 What are you thinking of getting?

Hope you enjoyed your day off!

Yes, I did. It was a day of relaxation (and a little bit of house cleaning :)) I’m thinking of getting the Barefoot eyeshadow, the lipstick in To Catch A Sailor ( not sure if it’d look good on me so I’m still hesitating) and the suntint in Au Rose 🙂 choices, choices.

BTW, I love that you respond in such a personal way to every comment. It makes me feel special 🙂

Sounds like a good way to spend the day off. I always like to sneak in a little cleaning when I can (I’m very much my mother’s daughter that way, LOL!).

So, Barefoot eyeshadow! I wore it to dinner tonight and it’s really pretty, especially in the inner corner. If you love glowy golds, you won’t be disappointed.

Aw, it’s my pleasure to get to chat with you in the comments! I really enjoy getting to know everyone here. Makes me feel like I’m always surrounded by friends.

Have a great night, and happy almost Friday!

Ha, I do love golds. But how many gold eye shadows can a girl have? That’s what holding me from buying it…I probably have something similar already although it looks really really pretty 🙂

It’s an early Friday for me, started work at 4.30 am 🙁 Happy Friday though!

This is true. If you have Gorgeous Gold you may not need it. It’s really pretty though, and the packaging is so fun!

Eeek, 4:30! That’s some seriously early translating, LOL!

You mentioned that the “stripes aren’t over-sprays, and that “they go all the way to the BOTTOM OF THE PAN”. I saw from other people’s swatches that the beige shade is an overlay and underneath the beige layer are shades of purple, pink and orange. Do you know if there is another beige layer under that? Do you have a picture of what happened when you scraped your Crew powder?

Regardless, I’m still getting it! It looks so gorgeous in the pan and when swatched. =)

Nope, no beige shade beneath the purple. I don’t have an after pic… sorry!

That looks so pretty on you, and yay for matte! Oh my god, did you drop the powder??? I know you said not to ask but that’s what I thought first!

I still haven’t ever tried any MAC ever. Ever. How sad is that? This looks really nice… still trying to figure out what my first MAC purchase will be 🙂

I ordered this today, along with fleet fast. Then, I went back and bought sail la vie and jaunty. What can I say? This girl loves some pretty colors, especially if they’re wrapped up in sailor stripes!

      Hi Amy,

Me too. I love collections with beach/ocean themes is general! The crisp blue and white stripes had me at hello.

Have you been a MAC fan for long?

I honestly can’t resist anything with a beach theme! I broke a no-buy for this, and I think it’s going to be totally worth it. 🙂

I’ve loved MAC for ages–I bought my first MAC product (the plain clear lipglass) when I was in middle school, and after that, I was totally hooked!

So with you on this. Did you get anything from last year’s Surf Baby? I’m a surfer (not a very good one, but I enjoy it) so it was a no-brainer for me.

Ahh, every girl remembers her first MAC product! I love that Clear Lipglass and still do.

          Happy Friday!

Unfortunately I missed that one! I did manage to snag a few items from the Wonder Woman (my fave superhero!) collection, though, so it’s all good.

            Have a great weekend!

    Hi, Karen,

New reader here. Love the blog! FYI, the beige stripes are oversprays. If you scrape about a millimeter or two into the powder, you’re left with just the pink, orange, and purple.

    Hi Sara Elizabeth,

Yup, I know! You have to scrape really, really deep to get to the color beneath it though. I really had to chip away at it.

So sad about Donna Summer…. my favorite song of hers is Hot Stuff. Reminds me of one of my guilty pleasure movies — The Full Monty.

Fun fact: one of Tabs’ theme songs is Hot Stuff. (Naturally!)

      Hi Sara,

Thank you! I’m wearing MAC Pro Longwear Lip Pencil in Throw Me a Line! and MAC Lipglass in Send Me Sailing. Both are from Hey, Sailor!

Are you a red lips kinda girl, too?

    Hi Karen!

I was wondering…how does this compare to Guerlain’s meteorites les perles in terms of shimmery-ness? I know they’re quite different products as the meteorites are supposed to colour correct as well. There is so much dissent about whether the meteorites are glittery/shimmery or not but I need to have it in my collection. Based on your review of Crew, it may be a more suitable alternative for me. (But I really want them balls :P).
