There’s Something Fishy About Nails Inc. Kensington Hand Cream, and It’s Not the Scent

August 13th, 2011 by Karen 14 Comments

One of these days I’m gonna start a bumper sticker line for beauty addicts. You’ll find it at Sephora in one of those wire kiosk things that twirl, and the stickers will say things like, “I’m lost without Shu,” and “I’m a ho for hand cream.”

Speaking of that, have you tried the new (well, new to us Yanks) Nails Inc. Kensington Conditioning Hand Cream ($18 for a 3.4-oz. tube)? I like it so much that when I switched purses for the eighth time in just as many days, I was sure to move the tube over with my essentials (wallet, keys, lipgloss, iPhone, emergency travel packet of Nutella).

The cream, which recently made the trip out here from London and now lives at Sephora stores, contains caviar extract, which is fancy for “fish egg juice.” 🙂

Ingredients: Aqua, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glycerin, Glyceryl Stearate, Stearic Acid, Cetearyl Alcohol, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa Butter), Triethanolamine, Dimethicone, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Caviar Extract, Soluble Collagen, Parfum, Tocopheryl Acetate, Alcohol Imidazolidinyl Urea, Retinyl Palmitate, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Hydroxyproline, Lecithin Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Sorbitol , Tocopherol, Glyceryl Oleate, Butylparaben Ethylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Methylparaben, Phenoxyethanol, Propylparaben Citronellol, Geraniol, Limonene.

I’m not sure what, if anything, the caviar is doing in there (I suspect it’s more of a red herring, haha!) but it sure sounds rich. The non-greasy cream also contains a few other compounds, unfortunately, like various parabens and dimethicone, that I’d just assume not see in the list of ingredients, but the product’s performance is its saving grace. It’s supposed to reduce the appearance of fine lines while firming the skin and boosting collagen production. I can’t attest to any of those claims yet, but I will say this: it’s mad crazy moisturizing!

And I love the way it smells — downright sexy, like warm amber, vanilla and musk. It reminds me of Gucci Guilty, my favorite fall scent from last year. Nails Inc. says the fragrance also contains notes of orchid, but I haven’t been able to pinpoint them.

PRICE: $18 for a 3.4-oz. tube
AVAILABILITY: Available now at Sephora stores and also online
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: B (contains a few ingredients I’d like to see replaced)

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

It’s pretty cool that you travel with a packet of Nutella! I wish I could do the same with raw cheddar and organic golden crackers. 😀

I’m kinda meh on this hand cream. It’s good that it’s non-greasy, but $18 is way more than I’m willing to spend on a hand cream. Even if it does contain fish egg juice.

Caviar extract sounds… interesting, haha. I still need to head to Sephora and check out the Nails Inc stuff, but my Sephora is in the mall and I HATE the mall. I’ll just have to suck it up because now I’m really curious about this cream, too!

I thought I was the only one that traveled with Nutella in her purse. My Nutella obsession increased from a recent trip to Italy..Nutella gellato and snack packs gallore! Anyway I will give this handcream a try…grazie 🙂

    Noo, all that tasty caviar!

There’s a grocery store that sells teeny tiny packets of the world’s most amazing nut butters; I keep some almond butter packets as dog treats because my dog looks so funny eating sticky butter! 😀

The cream sounds lovely but at that price, the way I go through hand cream, I would be in the poorhouse in no time. lol

I have a zipper compartment in my purse full of Splenda and Crystal Light To Go packets. We should get together with Ada and have a purse snack and drink party. 😀

Alterna has a hair care line with caviar and I always thought the same thing (marketing and price justification over function). However, I haven’t tried either so maybe caviar is a miracle ingredient. 🙂 On a side note, this packaging is beautiful!

Oh yeah, I remember seeing that in the stores. La Prairie also has a very pricy collection in their skin care line made with caviar extract, too. I dunno… when it all breaks down we’re still talking about fish eggs. Eww!
