Unsung Hair Heroes: $6 Tresemme Fresh Start Renewing Dry Shampoo

June 18th, 2014 by Karen 20 Comments

Second-day hair don’t care!

Second-day hair don’t care!

Err…make that third-day hair don’t care.

OK, fourth-day hair. 🙂

Yes, fourth-day hair. Last week I ran three days in a row without washing my hair (no judgment) and, dude! — by the last day my roots were janky to the Nth degree.

I was only able to tolerate myself thanks to Tresemme’s new Fresh Start Renewing Dry Shampoo. I was actually kind of shocked by how well it worked.

Tresemme Fresh Start Renewing Dry Shampoo (1)

Now I’m thinking I might’ve even been able to make it to five-day hair…

Maybe.

Since I got my hair chopped a couple weeks ago, I’ve actually had to — gasp! — style it in the mornings (because I can’t just put it up in a ponytail anymore and forget about it), so to save a little time between shampoos, I’ve been spraying Fresh Start on my roots after my morning shower.

Tresemme Fresh Start Renewing Dry Shampoo (2)

It contains oil-absorbing mineral clay and sucks up sweat and funk like a root-sucking hair vacuum!

After using it, my scalp definitely feels less greasy, but doesn’t feel thick or packed with powder, which happens sometimes when I use other dry shampoos. My roots actually feel less dirrrrty when I use this stuff — not as clean as real shampoo, obvs, but all things considered, it’s pretty great for two- or three-day hair.

And I love how much it lifts my roots, which flatten and lose volume between shampoo washings, but spraying Fresh Start at my roots restores a lot of bounce and movement.

What’s more…

  • No white roots! The powder is virtually invisible. It comes out of the bottle stark white, so it looks a little scary at first, especially if you have dark hair, but it disappears once massaged in.
  • This mist is foine! One of the problems I have with a lot of dry shampoos is the spray bottles are weak and don’t cover enough area, but this one has oomph. The spray spreads in a fine mist, sending out a swath of powder to cover a good amount of hair, but it’s still easy to control. It’s quick and easy to use.
  • The fast-fading fragrance comes on strong. I’d like it more (it’s floral, a mix of white flowers, I’m guessing) if it wasn’t so strong, but it fades quickly.
  • A weightless wonder. It feels like nothing — zero weight — even after days, and it creates crazy volume at the roots. I really hope Tresemme makes a travel version that I can bring with me on trips.

I almost can’t believe this is only $6 because it seems more like one of those fancy-schmancy $20 dry shampoos. Highly recommended!

FYI for the bargain hunters, Fresh Start is BOGO (buy one get one 50% off) now at Ulta and ulta.com. 🙂

The long-running Unsung Heroes series features some of my favorite permanent collection products from a variety of bodacious beauty brands.

“WHAT AM I GONNA DO NOW?!”

I may or may not have said this out loud after watching the season four finale of Game of Thrones the other night.

Finally, after YEARS of being behind on the show, I’m all caught up, and I seriously have no idea what to do with myself now, LOL! If you want to chat about the finale, let’s do this.

Hit me up in the comments.

Your friendly neighborhood addict,

Karen

I haven’t tried dry shampoo in a million years since I was in the hospital with mono. I’ve never really seen the need for it. But I have color-treated red hair that I wash every 3 or 4 days. In the winter, it’s no problem, but in the warm/hot weather, after jogging and sweating, it’s hard to go more than a day or two. Maybe this is the answer.

Really? I tried Treseme’s dry shampoo when I ran out of my Suave dry shampoo with keratin, and I was so disappointed I threw it out! Suave works so much better for me! (Fine straight blonde hair but a lot of it, runs to the oily side, and I try to only wash 2-3 times per week. –which I get away with thanks to up-dos and Suave dry shampoo!)

      Hi Molly,

Did you try this version? It’s a new one that recently hit shelves. There’s also several different formulations. I tried the “Fresh Start Renewal” one.

The GOT Finale!!! Were you as surprised as I was about a certain ahem…

    **SPOILER ALERT**

person’s escape? Was NOT seeing that coming… I had resigned myself to his fate after the trial by combat. Also… Brienne of Tarth (!!!) would never have to worry about white dry shampoo, huh? Ha ha ha 🙂

OMG! Yes! Although I try not to get attached to anybody I’m Team Tyrion at the moment.

Am I crazy for loving the idea of Brienne and Jamie?!

I am *so* curious about dry shampoo! I have the feeling that I won’t get away with it (almost any product of any kind in my hair, especially at the roots, feels impossibly heavy and sticky), but I might convince myself to get one of the little travel size Batiste ones to try…

I really love the Tresemme dry shampoos. I have one for color treated hair and I have one that is meant for hair that goes through a lot on a daily basis (sweat, being put up in tight braids, ponytails, and buns, etc.). I read a good tip in a magazine recently: Use dry shampoo at night and sleep on it to achieve the best results. For anyone having trouble with dry shampoo (I initially didn’t like how much I had to massage it in and brush it out to achieve results). When you sleep, tossing and turning does the massaging for you. And Karen, I hear you on shorter hair requiring some more work. Any time I have gone shorter or gotten new layers, it takes work to get it looking good after waking up. I have been debating on going shorter again for a while but I really love how easy it is to French braid my hair or throw it in a bun or ponytail and go because it is mostly one length with layering at the ends.

I tried the Tressame Dry Shampoo’s when I was back in Germany. They actually made my hair greasier! Maybe they changed the formula!

I can’t talk about the finale quite yet since I haven’t seen it (though I did read the books up til this point but it seems to me they’re adding some things I don’t remember), but just wanted to say I have that dry shampoo and think it’s pretty snazzy, although I do have issues with the white powder sometimes. It’s one of those learning curves with how much to put in and where…

I love Jon Snow <3 DREAMY.

Right now I'm kind of having to wash my hair everyday because of sweat (heart condition + summer), but dry shampoo is a life saver – I even add it to clean hair for volume!

His hair is the best! I wonder if he uses dry shampoo, LOL!

I can’t remember if I asked you this, but have you watched the finale yet?

SO much. I almost can’t handle it!

I started re-watching the first season last night and it’s kind of heartbreaking to see all the characters you know are going to die.

He would’ve been great king material.

You know what I realized last night while watching season one? Daenerys did a pretty good job of putting a positive spin on a situation where she initially had absolutely no control or say in the matter. Go girl! LOL

I’ve go a travel sized version of that dry shampoo! I got it in one of the beauty boxes I subscribe too and I’m so pleased with it. I like it more than the expensive dry shampoo I got from another brand.

I didn’t know Tresemme made dry shampoo. I’ll keep an eye out for it. Dry shampoo is so good to use after hair salon appointments, it doesn’t feel as “clean” as actual washed hair but it is good to use to keep hair fresh.

Kit Harington is a cutie. 😀
