You May Need a Hand with the Sonia Kashuk Dripping in Diamonds Travel Brush Set

December 17th, 2010 by Karen 14 Comments

The seven long-handled makeup brushes tucked within the lovely limited edition Sonia Kashuk Dripping In Diamonds Travel Brush Set ($24.99) may not get a lot of use this holiday season…

…because opening the stylin’ silver clutch is like trying to crack a safe!

I swear, Rubik himself would have struggled to figure it out. The latch, which is set flush against the side, looks the same from the top/bottom. It takes a good deal of force to pry open. Poor El Hub looked like a gorilla with a Gameboy when I asked him to give it a try, and after pawing, growling and clawing at it for about a minute, he finally figured it out (still lovin’ ya, babe!). 🙂

Unfortunately, I’m not convinced the blush, foundation, blending, small eye shadow, smudge and lash brushes are worth all the effort. The eye brushes are scratchier than the ones in the Shimmer and Shine Brush Set; a few of them were even shedding a weird dust, which kinda looked like lint.

If you do end up getting the set, I suggest 1) washing the brush heads before you use them, and 2) doing a few hundred push-ups to build the upper body strength it requires to open the clutch. 🙂

To its credit, the clutch itself is gorgeous, isn’t it? And I tested to see if it would fit in my purse, and it does!

Yup, at least there’s that.

PRICE: $24.99 (on sale currently for $19.99)
AVAILABILITY: At Target stores and target.com

Hey it looks really similar to the black shimmer clutch she offered last year, which also is really hard to open.
However, I love those brushes and am sad that these aren’t up to the same quality :(.

Okay, so here’s how much I REALLY need a good night’s rest: I was totally confused while reading this post, to the point that I was thinking:
    1. “Didn’t Karen just review this?!” (for the first few paragraphs),
    2. “Haha, this review seems even funnier the second time around!” (for the next few), and finally,
    3. “OH! OH THIS MAKES SENSE NOW!” (once I got to the part where you link to the other review.)

    .sigh.

But anyhoozle, thanks for the review, lovely! The case really is super-cute, so it’s kinda a bummer that the set’s quality isn’t higher 🙁

I’m sad to hear that it is difficult to get that clutch open. I don’t know if I have the patience to fiddle with that all night. Also I hate doing push ups…lol. I was really thinking about buying it because its on sale right now at target.

      Hi Chanel,

Hmm, how about the Shimmer and Shine set? It’s $13 and actually pretty darn great:

Out of the bunch that one was the most soft. And it didn’t have any weird dust in it!
