Why Do You Think Red Is Such a Popular Lipstick Color?

May 13th, 2014 by Karen 39 Comments

Illamasqua's Fiesty Coloring Pencil, Maneater Lipstick and Touch Intense Lipgloss
Wearing Illamasqua Lip Colouring Eye Pencil in scarlet red Feisty, Maneater Lipstick and Touch Intense Lipgloss

Hmm…

I don’t know if there’s a scientific reason behind it — like if it has anything to do with red being the color of blood and romance and hearts and hot-blooded passion — but it is one of those classic colors that defies trends. It seems like red lips are always in fashion.

Like when I see pictures of fashionistas and famous screen sirens from the last century, the ladies in red lips always look like they’re wearing makeup I’d want to wear in this era.

And then I think there’s also the romantic notion of there being a different perfect red lipstick out there for every woman (and makeup-loving dude).

I’ve been wearing red lips since I was a teenager, and I remember regularly prowling the local Thrifty looking for every new red tube because I wanted — no, I NEEDED! — to find my perfect red, too.

Red lips are one of makeup’s common denominators. I mean, if I had a 13-year-old daughter, I’d probably tell her to wait a few years before wearing that intense matte red lipstick, but I think I’d be OK with her wearing a sheer red lippie on special occasions. And if I’m lucky enough to still be around in my sassy 70s, you better believe I’ll still be rockin’ red lips. 🙂

From two Christmases ago — my granny touching up her red lipgloss!

I do like to think that there’s a perfect red lippie out there somewhere for each and every one of us. The real fun is finding it.

What about you, friend? Why do you think red is such a popular lipstick color?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Tabs the Cat for Benefit Pot o' Gold Fur Highlighter

It’s rough for Tabs when it’s sunny like this because he wants to be outside constantly. There’s just so much to do! — like cavort with the new neighborhood kitties (there are two of them) and tend to his deck garden, now freshly planted with snapdragons, Gerbera daisies and catnip, among other plants his human friends find tasty, like tomatoes and sweet pepper.

On Saturday he made a Home Depot run and picked up a few tools and some pieces of lumber.

Yes, he’s multitalented like that. 🙂

Seriously, have you ever seen a cat do carpentry? It’s really quite incredible. He built a table to set his daisies and snapdragons on and a small planter box for cat grass. Later this week he plans to build an improv cat tree from which he’ll be able to survey his dominion. He’s drawing up the plans as we speak…

Tabs loves gardening. It’s how he relaxes after a tough week of kitty modeling. Last week was particularly brutal. He had back-to-back trips to Tokyo and Ireland to shoot ad campaigns for NARS and Benefit, respectively, and then an overnight stay in New York for MAC.

He’s really racking up the frequent flyer miles…

Here are the latest kitty modeling campaigns in his portfolio. Hope you enjoy!

Who is Tabs the Cat?
Kitty Supermodel Tabs the CatAbout seven years ago I befriended a stray, flea-bitten tabby cat with a bad case of worms. I could see he’d fallen on hard times, but his profound knowledge of high fashion and department store cosmetics led me to believe that he was more than meets the eye. We became fast friends, and now he’s actually my boss (and a successful kitty model).

P.S. So much good TV on tonight! Gah! I can’t wait to see what happens on The Walking Dead, and then there’s Cosmos. I have to make a really quick run to Trader Joe’s now, and Tabs needs more dry food from Petco. Must hurry back!

Tabs the Cat for the Illamasqua Arctic Aurora Palette

Dear Diary:

The state of the outside time in this company has gone way downhill lately. I haven’t been outside in two whole days, and I intend to file a complaint.

The shareholders must be made aware of this egregious injustice and corporate malfeasance. At the end of the day, it’s the company’s most serious pain point, and it demands a holistic, proactive paradigm shift to bring our synergies back into alignment.

It’s like I always say, we have to think outside the litter box to leverage our mission critical organic growth to streamline our strategery with some clear goals moving forward.

According to my assistant, it has been “drizzling” outside, and the ground has been wet. Well, let’s diversify, or something, and push the envelope! It would be a win-win situation for everyone.

Mrow! Do I have to do everything around here?

Anyway, while I type up my complaint, you may peruse the new kitty modeling pics in my portfolio. I hope they meet with your approval.

Toodles,

Tabs

Tabs the Cat for the Illamasqua Mummy Cat Collection

Who is Tabs the Cat? About six years ago I befriended a stray, flea-bitten tabby cat with a bad case of worms. I could see he’d fallen on hard times, but his profound knowledge of high fashion and department store cosmetics led me to believe that he was more than meets the eye. Who the heck invites a bobcat to a Halloween party? That’s what I want to know.

Yeah, Tabs went to Karl Lagerfeld’s big Halloween bash last night, and there was this bobcat there — huge cat — apparently he does a lot of print ads and covers for cat romance novels. Anyway, I guess he had a little too much catnip because he went batsh*t crazy at one point, smashed a sliding glass window and fell in the pool.

Yes, it was that kind of party.

Tabs said it was OK, but if you’ve been to one kitty supermodel Halloween party, you’ve been to ’em all. Same thing, different day. Choupette, Lagerfeld’s cat, went as a dominatrix…

Yeah, bo-ring.

I mean, you work with Karl Lagerfeld, for crying out loud. Do something original.

Tabs went as a mummy cat, but only because he was still dressed up after shooting an ad campaign yesterday for Illamasqua.

All things considered, it sounds like it was a good party. Tabs said the catnip hard candies were great.

Tabs actually did do some work this weekend, so it wasn’t all fun and games. If you’re interested, here are the highlights from his kitty modeling campaigns…

What Are Your Most Reliable, Gotta-Get-It Drugstore Makeup Products?

October 10th, 2013 by Karen 75 Comments

That’s L’Oréal’s matte reddish coral Le Matte Colour Riche Lipstick in She’s So Matte on my pout…

I’ve been on a drugstore makeup tear lately, and I’m curious — what budget makeup products do you absolutely swear by? Is there a line of drugstore foundation you love? A particular brand/shade of lipstick you’ll always go out of your way for? An eyeshadow, waterproof mascara or liquid liner?

Let me know. Spill the beans in the comments. What are your most reliable, gotta-get-it drugstore makeup products?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. How’s it going? 🙂

P.P.S. Not drugstore related, but if you’re an MBB reader in NYC, Illamasqua’s Creative Director, Alex Box, will be at the 59th Street Bloomingdale’s today from 6:30-8:00 p.m. to celebrate the launch of the brand at the store. She’ll be doing live beauty demonstrations, so it’ll be a great opportunity to watch her work some serious makeup magic. How cool is that?! Wish I could be there, but Tabs wouldn’t give me the time off…

Say Auf Wiedersehen to Boring With the Six 1920s Berlin-Inspired Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Moderncraft Collection Lip Tars

September 27th, 2013 by Karen 26 Comments

OCC Sebastian Lip Tar
Uh…that’s Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar in Sebastian ($18)

Should you ever get the sudden urge to wear a plummy mauve matte lip on a Friday night, don’t over-think it. Just GO WITH IT!

Aw, come on! Why not? It’s only makeup. If it doesn’t work out, you can always wipe it off.

Heck, and you never know what’ll work out. Sometimes it’s the products you least expect that end up being holy grail. Maybe Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar in Sebastian ($18) will be a perfect fit for you.

I didn’t know what to expect, but I liked the swatch, so trying it on my lips seemed like the next logical step.

Granted, the reason I liked the swatch was because it reminded me of a rug I want to get for my office, but still… Details, details.

As soon as I tried it on, I was like, “Sweet! Not nearly as cray as I thought it would be.”

Well…it looks a little cray, but I actually expected it to look even more cray (crayer?).

It’ll be perfect for scaring my neighbors! 🙂

Sebastian is one of six intriguing Lip Tars in the Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Moderncraft collection for fall, the inspiration for which was 1920s Berlin.

Sounds a little like something Illamasqua might do, yeah? In fact, some of the colors even remind me of Illamasqua, which might be why I like them so much.

Four of the shades are in the regular Lip Tar formulation (so pigmented, and they last all day long), and two are Lip Tar Stained Glosses (sheer and lightweight, with a three-hour wear time). All of them have a lovely, light minty flavor and fragrance that fades fast.

Popping any one of these on your lips with cat eyes is a surefire way to kick your look into fall.

Tabs for the MAC Eye Shadow Single in Reach for the Stars

Who is Tabs the Cat? About six years ago I befriended a stray, flea-bitten tabby cat with a bad case of worms. I could see he’d fallen on hard times, but his profound knowledge of high fashion and department store cosmetics led me to believe that he was more than meets the eye. We became fast friends, and now he’s actually my boss (and a successful kitty model).

Hi, babe. Hope you had a nice weekend. This was sort of a recuperative one for me. My batteries were tapped out after Vegas, I guess. I was so tired yesterday that I could barely keep my eyes open all day and didn’t get a darned thing done. I passed out before 10 last night, and slept in till 9 today.

Tabs, my kitty liege/employer, was none too pleased about that. He hopped on the bed at one point and bit me on the chin, as if to say, “B*tch, who’s gonna make my gravy!?”

Today I just did a couple things around the house, went for an easy run, Watched some TV (new eps of Portlandia on Netflix, and more of the first season of 24) and cooked a pretty good dinner, if I do say so myself, of tilapia filets on white rice with diced tomato and garlic, and a side spinach salad with candied walnuts and grilled apricot and plum slices, yum!

It was delish.

Tabs wholeheartedly agreed. He said, “meow,” about the fish, which meant a lot to me. As a world-renowned plus-size kitty supermodel, Tabs only eats premium cuisine. 🙂

Speaking of kitty modeling, here are the highlights from his week… Have a great night.

I’m Celia San Miguel of Sicka Than Average, and This Is My Makeup Life

September 3rd, 2013 by Karen 6 Comments

The charming Celia San Miguel of Sicka Than Average
The My Makeup Life series asks beauty biz insiders, bloggers, makeup mavens and artists to share their holy grail products, tricks, tips and favorite beauty tools. Is there anyone you would like to see featured in My Makeup Life or questions you think I should ask? Let me know here.

Name: Celia San Miguel
Location: New York, NY
Day job/current gig: I’m a freelance writer for a number of magazines (mainly LATINA), and I’m also a social media manager for a leading digital agency in NYC. In addition to that, I’m also an on-air style and beauty expert, working mainly with Telemundo here in NYC.
Hangouts online: sickathanaverage.com, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube
Current favorite product: Make Up For Ever Aqua Rouge lip color and Ouidad’s Moisture Lock Leave-in Conditioner
Beauty inspirations: Markets, flappers, can-can dancers, Chinese hibiscus flowers, pink peonies, parakeets, butterflies, Mick Rock’s glam rock photographs, Brazilian samba dancers, punk fashion…. The list is endless!
One word that best describes your outlook on beauty: Exuberant 😉

What makeup/beauty products can’t you live without?

The list of products is endless! Starting with the basics, I can’t live without my Clarisonic Mia 2 for a really deep and thorough cleanse. I’m always testing different facial cleansers, but I tend to come back to the Korres Wild Rose Daily Brightening Cleanser, the Pacifica Sea Foam Complete Face Wash, the Caudalie Instant Foaming Cleanser, and the L’Occitane Immortelle Precious Cleansing Foam. As far as moisturizers and anti-aging products, I like using the Caudalie Vinoperfect Day Perfecting Fluid SPF 15 over the Estée Lauder Idealist Even Skintone Illuminator during the day and, at night, I apply the Clarins Double Serum and then add my nightly moisturizer (either Caudalie’s Premier Cru or L’Occitane’s Immortelle Precious Night Cream). And that’s just skincare!

As a makeup junkie it’s so hard to pick just a handful of products! For the face, I love Tarte Cosmetics’ BB Cream, Make Up For Ever’s Pro Finish Foundation, Hourglass Cosmetics’ Veil Fluid Makeup, Tarte’s Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Full Coverage Foundation, Hourglass Cosmetics’ Ambient Lighting Powder, and NARS’ blushes (Orgasm is still one of my all-time fave shades). For eyes, I swear by Urban Decay’s eye shadow palettes (the Naked 2 palette is so fantastic!) and Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Shadow pencils. And, since I’m all about bright lips, I tend to gravitate to Illamasqua’s lipsticks and Make Up For Ever’s Rouge Artist lipsticks or, for a more liquid, slick look, I’ll use Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Rouge lip colors or OCC Makeup’s Lip Tars.

When did you start getting into makeup?

I think around the time I was five or six! I remember watching my grandma getting ready in the morning, and she had this ritual that seemed so glamorous to me as a wide-eyed little girl. I still remember the facial massages she gave herself while applying her Pond’s Cold Cream and the way she’d blot her lips after smoothing on her favorite shade of lipstick (a wine-ish red from Estée Lauder). It was magic to me.

What’s your best beauty time-saving trick?

A healthy, glowing complexion and a bright lip goes a long way. When in a rush, I’ll typically reach for one of my favorite tinted moisturizers (I adore Hourglass’ Illusion Tinted Moisturizer, NARS’ Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer, and Tarte’s Amazonian Clay BB Tinted Moisturizer), and then I’ll mix that with a drop of luminizer, like the NARS Illuminator or one of Make Up For Ever’s Uplight shades. When you apply the mixture to your face, you’ll get that nice bit of coverage with an added glow that makes you appear lit from within. Add a nice, creamy lip color in a vibrant shade and you’ll be good to go!

What’s your favorite beauty tool?

I’m currently obsessed with the TRIA Hair Removal Laser. I always suffered from ingrown hairs on my legs and, since I started using the TRIA a year ago, it’s ceased to be a problem (and, of course, there’s less hair growth overall, which cuts down on shaving time). Given how costly in-office laser removal treatments tend to be, this tool is as an absolute lifesaver.

What’s the best beauty advice you ever received?

Hmmmm… So many things come to mind! I think some of the greatest advice I received involved the art of using concealer. For example, to cover a reddish patch or a blemish, you want to use a concealer with a mint-y, light green tint so as to neutralize the redness and then, afterward, dab on a neutral shade that matches your skin tone. Similarly, to cover purplish or blue under-eye circles, you’ll want to reach for an orange-tinged concealer and, again, dab the neutral shade above this one. It’s all about make up color theory and learning which hues neutralize each other, which complement each other, and so forth.

What’s your skincare routine?

Check out the answer to the No. 1 question. 😉

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve tried in the name of beauty?

There were several peels that were a bit scary (to say the least), but I think some of the weirdest things have involved at-home, DIY treatments that I attempted (like coffee scrubs and hair masks with egg yolks and mayonnaise and avocado). I’ve learned over the years that I’m not particularly gifted at whipping up these all-natural beauty remedies and treatments, so I pretty much steer clear, since having to clean up the mess afterwards is never fun.

Do you have a trademark look (hair/styling/makeup)?

Not really! I love to experiment with different looks — it’s part of the fun for me. That being said, I love color, so you’ll usually find me wearing either bright eye colors or vibrant lip hues.

Are there any beauty decisions you’ve made that you look back on and ask yourself, “why?!”

Of course! I wore acrylic nails as a teen and twenty-something and I thought I looked so fly but, really, it was a hot mess! And then, of course there is the plethora of botched hair color experiments, which include a jet black color that left me looking like Wednesday Adams and a bright, orange-tinged red that was Carrot Top all the way.

Where are your favorite places to shop?

I love Sephora, of course, as well as Ulta, but I also love going into drugstores and roaming along their beauty aisles — whether it’s Duane Reade, CVS, or Walgreens.

Anything else you want to share?

For one, I own over 50 perfumes, and I wear them all since I firmly believe in switching up scents depending on your mood, your outfit, and your destination. What else? I have tiny feet, so even my 11-year-old stepdaughter wears a larger shoe size than me (it’s kind of embarrassing). Oh, and you’ll never catch me without earrings on — I even wear tiny studs when I sleep! What other random factoid can I give you? Oh yeah: some kids used to call me Punky Brewster as a kid, which I secretly loved since I always thought she was so scrappy and funky. Oh, and I used to have the hugest crush on Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest when I was a teeny bopper, and I still get hype every time “Scenario” comes on!
