The Chanel Smoky Eye Quad Seduction

September 23rd, 2008 by Karen 99 Comments

She arrived dressed to thrill in a sleek black compact — four sophisticated shadows born to seduce and built to weaken knees. Crafted to create the ultimate smoky eye, she prepared to do her dance of makeup seduction.

Even before I opened the Chanel Smoky Eye Quad ($56), I could hear her siren song…

“Play with me, Karen,” she sung, “You know you want to play with my matte black, shimmery gray and white shadow shades.”

“Don’t you want to try my dark, shimmery gray shade above a layer of MAC Smolder eyeliner?” she probed.

I trembled.

It’s hard enough to resist Chanel on a normal day, but after weeks of self-imposed Chanel makeup lockdown, I was helpless against her.

“You know I’ll look effortless and classic,” she purred in my ear. “Use an angled brush and line your bottom lash line with my matte black… You won’t regret it.”

“Yes…” I replied, defeated, my willpower gone, “and to complete the look, I’ll add a nude cheek and lip.”

“Heavenly,” she demurred.

Water lilies at the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers

  1. Mood:
  2. Sleepy

  3. Fragrance:
  4. Chanel Allure

  5. Nails:
  6. My fingers and toes are bare right now, but later today I’m painting them in The Good Earth, a shimmery dark brown by Sally Hansen.

  7. Sweet tooth:
  8. Carrot cake with *lots* of cream cheese frosting

  9. Celeb crush:
  10. He’s mainly a local celebrity, but I’m still giddy about meeting San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom last week.

  11. Makeup crush:
  12. Cat Eyes ($16) eye liner by Pop Beauty, an eye crayon shaped to create the liner “flick” at the ends of cat eyes.

  13. Something you don’t know about me:
  14. I love the beach late at night.

  15. Latest makeup or beauty find I’ve been telling my homies about:
  16. Chanel No. 5 Eau de Premiere. I always considered Chanel No. 5 a little too overbearing and stuffy, but I’m really into this interpretation of the scent. It’s lighter and not as rich old lady as regular No. 5. I think it just might be my new fall fragrance.

  17. Hair:
  18. A loose, low bun.

  19. Goals for the week:
  20. To keep repeating my mirror mantras (hey, those things actually help!), to survive work and to put together the prize bags for the bachelorette party I’m throwing this Saturday. Got any ideas for prizes?

Your turn. 🙂 Just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

Celebrity Poll: What Do You Think of Sarah Jessica Parker’s Audrey Hepburn Look?

September 20th, 2008 by Karen 24 Comments

At last night’s Sex and The City: The Movie DVD release party in New York City Sarah Jessica Parker took inspiration from an icon of Hollywood style. The gloves, bangs, the black shift dress — girlfriend was obvs channeling Holly Golightly/Audrey Hepburn’s look in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

I think Audrey’s classic, timeless look in Breakfast represents the pinnacle of style. Sure, 99% of the time I dress like a bum in tank tops and jeans, but with unlimited financial resources you better believe I’d hit the Safeway wearing pearls, a tiara and a black satin gown.

At first, I wasn’t sure how I felt about SJP’s interpretation of the look (the sheer gloves, eek!), but I think I’m on board. The pink patent leather shoes won me over in the end. 🙂

I wish I had a Holly Golightly dress to wear to the wedding I’m going to this afternoon in SF. One of my best friends from college is getting hitched. They’ve been dating forever, so it’s about time. I’ll take some pictures to share.

I’ll probably recycle the dress I wore to Macy’s Passport the other night (Shhh…).

Whatcha doing this fine Saturday? Got any plans?

Face of the Day with Stila’s Red Carpet Looks Palette

September 18th, 2008 by Karen 36 Comments

Heya, ladies! What’s shakin’? I just got home from work and wanted to share the look I wore to the office today. It’s a subtle, smokey, purple, pink and taupe eye (what a mouthful!) done using products from Stila’s Red Carpet Looks palette.

Self-imposed makeup lockdown came to an end a few days ago when I spotted the palette on sale for $15.20 at Beautycrunch.com. Isn’t the “magazine” cover cute? Inside are three shadows, a blush and a lipgloss.

Stila Red Carpet Looks

  • Shell eye shadow: light, shimmery pink with glitter
  • Puck eye shadow: shimmery taupe
  • Dahlia eye shadow: matte, dark purple
  • Fade blush: matte tan
  • It Gloss in Sweet: a shimmery coral-pink lipgloss

I like to wear a lil’ color to the office but can’t go over the top, ya know? I’ll gladly push the envelope, but I can only push it so far before getting in trouble. I think the shadows that come with this kit are great work shades — colorful but not draggy.

Tonight I’m heading into SF for the annual Macy’s Passport charity fashion show. I went last year and had a blast. No interviews scheduled this time around, but I’m bringing along my trusty camera and reporter’s notebook, so hopefully I come away with some good photos and maybe a makeup tip or two for the blog.

We’re almost to Friday. Looks like we made it! 🙂

Heya, chicas. Can you believe it’s already mid-September? Before you know it, it’ll be Thanksgiving, then Christmas… Where does the time go?

I’m already feeling a little nostalgic for summer, so I put together this list of posts from July. These were some of my favorites of the month.

Not much on my agenda for today beyond some cleaning and maybe a trip to the mall. El Hub asked that I help him pick out some new clothes for work. In boy parlance that means his last few pairs of pants have holes in them, lol!

Have a good one today. Tabs says hi.

P.S. Hey, animal lovers. Stop by the cosmetics department at the downtown San Francisco Bloomingdale’s this Thursday, September 18, for a Day of Beauty for Pets. The event will benefit Pets Unlimited, a local non-profit providing emergency medical treatment and adoption services for pets.

I volunteered with them as a dog walker a couple years ago and had a lot of fun. They’re a fantastic organization.

On the 18th, Bloomies will donate 10% of all cosmetics purchases to Pets Unlimited. You can even bring along your pet to help you shop. Fido can get his picture taken or his portrait drawn while Fluffy gets her pet tag engraved. Keep an eye out for the workshop on holistic animal care.

If you live out of the area but would still like to support the cause, call Bloomingdale’s at (415) 856-5540 to place an order by phone. They even ship internationally (as long as your items aren’t flammable, lol!). For more information, visit Bloomingdale’s.com.

Pop Beauty Wallet Eye Shadow Palettes Are Cute, Convenient and Affordable

September 5th, 2008 by Karen 29 Comments

I popped by Sephora this afternoon to snag a jar of Stila Hydrating Finishing Powder. I’d been wanting to try it for a while (review coming soon!), but, like a true makeup junkie, I couldn’t just grab one thing and leave. I had to look around, and then these cute Wallet Palettes by Pop Beauty took hold of me and wouldn’t let go!

A Real Eye Shadow Bargain

There are seven of them, ranging in price from $32 to $42. Each wallet contains a different color-themed eye shadow palette. They go by the names Brown Eyes, Green Eyes, Blue Eyes, Smokey Eyes, Smokey Rose, Day to Play and Bronze Pop.

The palettes are mixes of coordinated shimmers and matte shadows; a couple of them also come with blushes and lipsticks.

I think my favorites are Smokey Rose and Day to Play ($42 each).

Smokey Rose’s purple, faux-snakeskin case is packed with enough to create several different smokey looks — 12 eye shadows (shades of neutral pink, rose and blue), four blushes and two lipsticks. I can totally see myself packing these for a weekend trip! And the price… I really like the sound of $42 for 18 products. That works out to $2.33 each!

And Day to Play’s cute silver wallet houses 24 (!) eye shadows. At $1.75 each, it’s one of the better eye shadow bargains I’ve seen in a while.

Have You Tried Stila Perfecting Concealer?

August 31st, 2008 by Karen 37 Comments

Sephora kinda let me down yesterday. The only item in stock from the new Too Faced Smoke & Mirrors Fall 2008 collection was the Smoky Eye Palette. Bummer, but I didn’t leave the store unsatisfied or empty handed.

In the Stila section I found Perfecting Concealer in Shade F ($22).

It’s a highly pigmented formula and looked great in the store. I’m looking forward to trying it out. Anything able to conceal my dark circles gets a special place both on my makeup shelf and in my heart.

I hope it has good staying power. I’ll let you know!

Anywho, today should be interesting. El Hub volunteered to drive one of the floats for the local Labor Day parade, and I get to ride shot gun, ha! We haven’t seen the float yet, but I’ll take some pictures to share.

What are your plans for today?

Too Faced Cosmetics Smoke and Mirrors Fall 2008 Collection Looks Lovely

August 30th, 2008 by Karen 25 Comments

G’morning, girls! How’s your Saturday going so far? I slept in a lil’ bit and then spent some time catching up on my beauty reading; check out these really cute vintage perfume bottles on Bella Sugar and Beauty Addict’s favorite fall nail polish. I also spotted the Too Faced Cosmetics Smoke and Mirrors Fall 2008 makeup collection. A few of the items look super cute, especially the lipsticks, smokey eye palette and the glitter liner. Right now I’m getting ready to run some errands (Target and Costco, fun!), and since my closest Sephora sits next door to House of Tar-ghay, I figure it won’t hurt for me to pop in and take a look. 😉

I don’t have much experience at all with the Too Faced brand, but earlier this year I tested Too Faced Shadow Insurance Anti-Crease Eyeshadow Primer, using it for one week beneath Clinique, Dior and MAC eye shadows and had much better luck with it than I had with Urban Decay Potion Primer. I had no problem blending shadows layered on top of Shadow Insurance.
