MAC Makeup, Face of the Day (FOTD): Matte2 in Copperplate, Fig. 1 and Poison Pen; Dear Makeup and Beauty Blog

October 10th, 2007 by Karen 26 Comments

Face of the Day with Mac Matte2, aka When Purple Doesn’t Reign

Try as I might, I can’t seem to get it together when it comes to MAC’s Matte2 shadows. I’ve tried to do a full on matte eye a few times but it’s just too hard for me in terms of blending. Plus, I need a lil’ sparkle and some shine, ya know?

Here’s one of the attempts with three Matte2 colors:
mac-matte2-fig1-copperplate-poison-pen
Fig. 1 — eggplant purple
Copperplate — muted mid-tone grey
Poison Pen — deep mid-tone purple with grey

mac-matte2-fotd-101007

mac-matte-2-1010070-fotd-final

Although I originally wanted to do an all matte eye, I ended up using Next to Nothing (from the Smoke Signals palette) on the browbone to offset the dark colors.

I also used:

MAC Bare Canvas paint as a lid primer
MAC technakohl liner
MAC Plushlash in Plushblack

On my lips that’s MAC Mattene in Composure and on the cheeks is MAC Emote blush.

The colors were really hard to blend, and I had to really put that 217 into overdrive to avoid having stark lines of definition. I also had to work fast too, because once the Bare Canvas paint dried blending was virtually impossible.

And did I mention that I felt too purple to function?
barney-work-that-purple-bitces

I dunno how I feel about this. I guess next time around I’ll try it with a lighter hand, which I think will make me feel less, um, purple.

Dear Makeup and Beauty Blog…

You know that you need tough love some times. And that I’m here to give it to ya!
dear-mbb

Dear Makeup and Beauty Blog,

I think my boyfriend is wearing my eyeliner.

I noticed a few weeks ago that I seemed to be going through my favorite eyeliner (MAC’s Technakohl in Graphblack!) really fast. I mean, I wear it every day, so I’m not surprised when it runs out. But lately it seems like I go through it so quickly. And one morning when I reached for it in my makeup kit, I noticed that the cap was off, which is something I never, ever do.

That night during dinner I mentioned it to my boyfriend, and told him that I thought there was a ghost or something in the house messing with my eye liner. He made a weird face and said that it was probably nothing and that I forgot to put the cap back on. Well, in between bites of pasta I looked closely at his lashline…and it seemed to look thicker, and bit more defined. That’s when it hit me: he’s using my eyeliner!

What should I do? Should I confront him about this? Should I just let it go? Help!

Sincerely,

Confused in California

Dear Confused,

It’s not the end of the world. Think about it: there are plenty of boys out there who work the lined eye with plenty of success.

Pete Wentz does Cleopatra liner
pete-wentz

Prince does the cat eye
prince-eyeliner

Jared Leto does a light smokey grey on the outer 2/3rds
jared-leto-liner

However, if it really makes you uncomfortable, you might want to have a little discussion with him.

Here are a few approaches I’d think about taking if I was in your shoes.

Bait and Switch: Let the boy keep wearing liner…just don’t let it be your expensive eyeliner

I would hide my precious Technakohl away and replace it with a Prestige or Wet n’ Wild liner from the drugstore. I did this a few years ago when El Hub kept using my pricey Bumble & Bumble Gentle shampoo in the shower. He had no clue that it cost an arm and a leg, so I just replaced it with some Suave and he was none the wiser.

Full on Frontal: Ask him straight up why he’s wearing your eyeliner…but be mentally prepared for a potentially shocking conversation

This direct tactic is the one I’d be most likely to take in this situation, but I wouldn’t go into the convo without preparing myself thoroughly. First, I’d make myself a mental list of all the potential answers that El Hub could eventually give me:

“Honey, why are your wearing my eyeliner?”

Potential answer #1
“Because I want to be a rock star like Prince, so I’m quitting my job to start a band!”

Potential answer #2
“Because I’ve discovered that I like wearing makeup. By the way, those stretched out panties you’ve been complaining about? It’s not cause you’ve lost weight. It’s cause I wear them when you’re at hip hop class!”

You get the picture.

Next, I’d brainstorm all of the possible ways I’d react to these answers.

Would this exercise help me in the end? I don’t know for sure. However, I do know that going through the possible scenarios would get me thinking about how to handle each possible situation with compassion, dignity and grace. I would also hope that the exercise would prepare me for *anything* he threw my way. And should shit hit the fan, I would hopefully be mentally prepared enough to not lose my cool and be an understanding and open-minded partner during the conversation.

Make Him Up, 101: If he’s determined to wear the liner, make sure that it at least looks good

So if the boy is hell bent on wearing liner, then the least you can do is to make sure it looks good. I’d perhaps give my guy a lesson on blending and brushes, plus a fresh pot of his own MAC Fluildline in Blacktrack.

Good luck, and keep on trucking.

Karen

Product Reviews and Face of the Day: Dita’s Favorite Things from MAC

September 16th, 2007 by Karen 21 Comments

I’m all up in a tizzy getting ready for the Dita interview on Wednesday. Whenever I get excited my stomach goes crazy (I’ve already gone through two large bottles of ginger ale) and I chew lots and lots of gum – it really takes the edge off.

Even though she’s a beauty icon and a celebrity, I’ve been reminding myself that she’s a person just like you and me. And just like us, she’s got her must-have MAC products, too.

I was lucky enough to get my hot lil’ hands on Dita’s Favorite Things from MAC! And of course, it includes MAC products that create the classic makeup look she’s famous for: hot red lips and dark black liner.

Get thee to the MAC counter for some Cremestick lip liner and Technakohl eye liner NOW!

fotd-ditas-favorite-things-mac
One of my biggest makeup issues is that I find reds hard to apply, but the Amplified Lipstick in Dubonnet paired with the Cremestick liner in Red Enriched made it so easy. Both products have a creamy, easy-to-work with texture. I am completely hooked on the Cremestick liner, which slipped right on and didn’t dry out my lips. It’s gonna take all my will power not to buy every color the next time I go to the Pro Store.

I can see why Dita digs this combo. I loved the color and the texture of Dubonnet. The finish isn’t too shiny, isn’t too matte, but just right for a refined, sophisticated red lip. I’m clumsy, ya’ll, but this was possibly one of the easiest red lip looks, ever.
Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A+!

Mocha blush, a soft plum-pink matte, was also easy to work with. It’s got just enough color, and layers nicely. I liked the pinched-cheeks flush it gave me, and I didn’t have to use a lot of it. It looks really natural too.
Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A

Shroom shadow is one of my faves – I’ve gone through three pans, a record for me — and I get a kick out of the fact that it’s one of Dita’s faves too. Brun is a muted blackish brown shadow in MAC’s satin formula. I love satins because they apply easily and blend well, but I had a little trouble with this because I’m still trying to figure out how to work really dark colors in the crease and blend them well. I think with a little more practice I’ll fall in love.

But the standout eye product here is the Technakohl Liner in Graphblack. I am usually a Fluidline kinda girl, but Graphblack is so easy to put on. It’s creamy, but highly pigmented, so you can smudge it if ya want and it still stays dark. And once you get it on your lids it doesn’t budge. I even put it on my waterline and it didn’t irritate my eyes at all.
Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A+

I am happy to say that I’ve gotten so much work done this weekend, hooray! I am just about to mail off my Hawaiian heirloom jewelry travel story, which is a big project I can cross off my list. If you don’t know what Hawaiian heirloom jewelry is then check out this video with Gwen Stefani, another beauty who rocks the red lip/black liner duo. Around 1:25 you’ll see some detailed close-ups of Hawaiian heirloom bracelets made for Gwen by Philip Rickard Honolulu. In the past she’s used heirloom jewelry in L.A.M.B. shows at NY Fashion week. Pretty, yah?

Still have lots more work to do, but I’m glad I got to spend a little bit of time with ya this Sunday.

Product Review: tarte cosmetics’s ready-to-wear/pret-a-porter palette from the Fall 2007 Health Couture Collection

September 8th, 2007 by Karen 6 Comments

Product: tarte cosmetics ready-to-wear/pret-a-porter palette
Use: to achieve two different types of smoky eye looks with just one palette
Price: $44.00 for a dual-look palette with six shadows, two cream blushes, four lipsticks, mascara, liner and brushes
Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you may have noticed that this fall cosmetics companies have been going buck wild crazy with the smoky eye palettes. I love the smoky eye look, and have no objection to this trend!

When most women think of smoky eyes they probably immediately think of the typical black shadow and liner rimmed eye. But did you know that there are several different versions of the smoky eye? You can do a smoky eye with blues, greens, greys, browns –you are only limited by your imagination (and budget, which hello, is the story of my makeup loving life).

Here’s a green-based smokey eye look I did using tarte’s ready-to-wear/prêt-a-porter palette from their Health Couture 2007 fall collection.

tarte-fall-pret-a-porter-ready-to-wear-i-love-ny-fotd
tarte-fall-pret-a-porter-ready-to-wear-i-love-ny-eye
tarte-fall-pret-a-porter-ready-to-wear-i-love-ny-eyes-both
tarte-fall-pret-a-porter-ready-to-wear-i-love-ny-lips

This dual personality palette has two looks packed into one cute case. There’s both green (i love new york) and gray/plum (paris mi amour) smoky eye looks complete with blushes and lipsticks, too.

You also get two short handled travel brushes (one flat shadow brush and a eye liner push brush), a wee tube of 4-in-1 mascara, and a light, peachy colored eye liner called rest assured brightening pencil. I’m not a fan of short handled brushes so I used my own when applying the makeup. If this is your venture into smoky eyes and you don’t have your own brushes then try these first, but know that in order to look like Jessica Alba on the red carpet you will probably need to invest in a few more brushes in the future. If you can make them work for you more power to ya. I know that for me I need at least a brush for my brows, a blending brush for the shadows, and a small angled brush to do any eye detail work in addition to a shadow brush and eyeliner brush.

tarte-fall-pret-a-porter-ready-to-wear-palette-i-love-ny-only
tarte-fall-pret-a-porter-ready-to-wear-palette-i-love-ny-swatches

What I liked about the i love ny side:
– Pretty, sheer green shadow colors that combine well
– Detailed “How to” booklet included with the palette
– Buildable honey peach cream blush
– Long staying power for the lipsticks, beige shade didn’t make me look questionably undead
– 4-in-1 mascara builds well for thicker, dramatic lashes

I love the bone highlighting shade; it’s shimmery but subtle. The moss and olive shadows are sheer, and while many seasoned shadow lovers might not like that I think that it’s great because it gives beginners a lot of leeway for mistakes.

The honey peach cream blush and the lipsticks were nice surprises. Because I have oily skin sometimes cream blushes slide right off but tarte’s formulation stayed on throughout the entire day. It’s also sheer but easily buildable, like the shadows. Both the beige and pink lipstick shades are pretty by themselves or mixed together, have good staying power, and don’t have a weird taste or smell.

I have lashes on the wimpy side so I really like to make them big and dramatic. I didn’t feel like one or two coats of 4-in-1 mascara was enough for me, so I ended up putting on four coats on. While this might seem like overkill, it actually turned out pretty well. The mascara builds up nicely without looking too spidery or truck stop hooker.

What I didn’t like about the i love ny side
I am a brush fiend and I’m very particular about brushes so I wasn’t crazy about the ones that came with the kit because of the short handles and the lack of weight.

I also wasn’t crazy about the rest assured brightening pencil. It’s this light, peach shade you apply to the inner rims of the lower lids to make you look more awake. Hmm. I ended up applying it along the lower lash line, and had to smudge it out so that it wouldn’t look to obvious. I’ll probably skip this step in the future.

I also wish that this came with a shadow primer or some kind of base to help “grab” the shadow. Beginners who use the palette without some sort of creamy shadow base might be disappointed with the results because of the sheerness of the shadows. I used MAC Paint in Bare Canvas and I think that helped the richness of the colors come through.

The final word
The i love new york side of the ready-to-wear palette gets a solid Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating of A. I was pleasantly surprised that all of the colors worked for my skin tone (which rarely ever happens for me with all-in-one kits), and I liked the quality of the products. If you’re new to the smoky eye and aren’t quite ready for a full on black raccoon eye then this is a good introduction. However, know that you’ll have to invest in some brushes in the future.

Stay tuned for the next installation of this palette review for the paris, mi amour colors in the next few days, along with rewiews for the rest of the Health Couture 2007 collection.

So, I’m still kinda cranky because the internet is still out in my house but the Comcast guy is coming at one to allegedly fix the problem. We’ll see if it actually happens. Later this afternoon I’m going to my friend’s house for lumpia rolling/cooking mini-party. If ya don’t know what lumpia is then grab your closest Filipino friend and have her/him take you to a Filipino lunch counter stat. (If you live in the East Bay or in Daly City I’m sure you’ll have no problem doing this, lol.) It’s basically a superior form of the typical egg roll, and it’ll take you into fried food ecstasy. Before I roll out though I gotta do some pre-lumpia cardio at the gym, so I’m off!

How has your weekend been so far? I hope you’re feeling good this Saturday.

Karen

Face of the day (FOTD) — MAC Smoke Signals Gentle Fume Eyes with Rondelle, Waft, Gentle Fume and Carbon

September 3rd, 2007 by Karen 10 Comments

So here’s the Smoke Signals Gentle Fume quad. You might notice that it looks a little world weary, like it was in after school fight where the girls took off their earrings and busted out a jar of Vaseline. Damn if this quad wasn’t the bane of my existence this weekend! I love it and I hate it at the same time!
mac-smoke-signals-gentle-fume-quad
The “Gentle Fume Incident” happened when I first tried it on Thursday night. I put a little swatch of Rondelle on my wrist. “OHHH!” I thought. “Love!” Unfortunately it was all down hill after that. For some unknown reason I was physically unable to stop myself from putting on layer after layer of Waft! It was like the ghost of Ru Paul (should s/he ever become a ghost) came and guided my brush further and further into the palette to turn my eye makeup into the uber-ist, fiercest Filipino drag queen eye makeup ever. And let me tell you, there are some fierce Filipino drag queens!

After recovering from to the trauma of El Hub asking if I was trying out for a job at Asia SF, I tried again on Saturday after getting some inspiration from the Chris Brown video, Wall to Wall. The video is all about Chris (what a cutie!) being lured into a life of the undead by some vampire hotties who just happen to be wearing lots of black vinyl and smokey eye/Smoke Signal-ish looks.

Here’s what I ended up with:

090107-mac-fotd-smoke-signals-gentle-fume-quad-eye

090107-mac-fotd-smoke-signals-gentle-fume-quad-final

I used:
Concrete on brows
Bare Canvas Paint on lid
Rondelle all over lid
Lithograph Fluidline on top and bottom lashline applied with soft, pointed concealer brush
Waft layered on top of fluidline
Waft and Gentle Fume brought barely into crease
The tiniest amount of Carbon in the outer v
Blacktrack fluidline on top and bottom waterline
Orpheus Kohl Power Pencil on top lash line
L’Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black mascara

Cheeks:
Ablaze and a touch of Emote. Ablaze shows up highly pigmented, so use this sparingly unless you want to look like Bozo the clown!
mac-smoke-signals-ablaze

Lips:
Barely Lit lipstick
Bare Truth Lipglass on top
Soft & Slow Lipglass applied on lower pout

After the “Gentle Fume Incident” I was wary of putting on too much color. And looking at these pics I almost feel like I should’ve put more on to increase my vampire-osity, but that could be my inner drag diva trying to find her way out again. I still love Rondelle, and will keep trying to find ways to make this pretty quad wearable.

It’s been a great weekend so far! My childhood friend and good buddy J-MONEY called me at the crack o dawn to announce her engagement. Her man, M-MONEY, popped the question this weekend. Maybe we’ll do some bridal makeup posts to celebrate. YAY, wedding!!!

Face of the Day (FOTD) – MAC Smoke Signals Madness Continues

August 30th, 2007 by Karen 18 Comments

I’ve got deadlines galore (the beauty book editing and writing another Hawaii story…yay!) but here’s a quick face of the day using MAC Smoke Signals.
083007-fotd-eye-single

083007-fotd-eyes

083007-fotd-lip

083007-fotd-final

The look:
The Smoking Eyes Quad: Next to Nothing, Satin Taupe, Smoking and Showstopper
Raven Kohl Power pencil
Emote blush
Brew Lipstick
Illicit Lipglass

mac-smoking-eyes4
The skinny:
If you are on the fence about the smoking quad lemme tell ya – the Smoking shadow (applied with a fluff brush on the upper lash line and brought barely to the crease; also on the lower lash line layered over Raven Kohl) on the lower right hand side makes it all worth it. This is a beautiful rich black with gold flecks, and when applied with a fluffy angled brush like the 275 it is *very* pretty AND beginner friendly. Next to Nothing is pretty, it reminds me of Shroom. I like it on my brow bone because it’s not too disco or silvery. I have lukewarm feelings about Satin Taupe – I find it really difficult control for some reason. I have to really watch how much I put on otherwise it overwhelms the other colors. I used Showstopper on the outer v. If you are a beginner then you may find this hard to apply. It’s dark and very matte and it can go very wrong very quickly, so you’ll have to watch how much you apply and apply it carefully.

I give this a Makeup and Beauty Blog rating of an A-. I think it’s a great beginner palette for smokey eyes, and seasoned MAC makeup junkies will GO FRICKIN BUCK WILD over Smoking.

083007-emote
Emote is another not to be missed part of the Smoke Signals collection. It looks kinda gross and brown and blah in the pan but it gives me the perfect warmed cheek without being too orange. It’s easy to apply, too, which I love! I think it will become one of my go to 5-minute makeup blushes. VERY beginner friendly!

Emote gets a Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating of A+! I love the color, the application and like that I can use it as both a blush and a contour color.

If you like multi-dimensional eye pencils you’ll love Raven Kohl Power Eye Pencil. I put this on the top and bottom lash line and layered it with Smoking! The color is gorgeous – kinda bronzey/black. It was very soft, didn’t tug, and made a nice, smooth line. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B+

As for Brew lipstick, Illicit Lipglass and the “natural” lip … what’s kinda funny to me is that to achieve this “natural” lip takes a lot of work. I just can’t slap the Brew on and throw some Illicit over it because it looks chalky and weird and kind of scary lunch lady wrong. In order to make this work I had to use a 316 and take the time to carefully put two layers of Brew on and then one layer of Illicit. I like the look of this nude lip but I wish it was easier to achieve. (What can I say? I’m lazy, ya’ll.) If you’ve got Viva Glam V then you don’t need this. However, if you have a natural lip fetish then you still might want to try this. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B-

Have a wonderful Thursday, friends. =)

News – Makeupandbeautyblog.com Attends Dinner Hosted by SF Fashion Week Key MAC Makeup Artists, Victor Cembellin and Louise Zizzo

August 23rd, 2007 by Karen 14 Comments

082207perbacco
The outside of Perbacco Restaurant in San Francisco, California

Last night Victor Cembellin and Louise Zizzo, MAC Senior Artists and key makeup artists for San Francisco Fashion Week 2007, hosted dinner at Perbacco restaurant in San Francisco, California. Writers, editors, beauty bloggers and key members of the MAC team met and mingled over drinks and dinner to discuss the upcoming fashion shows.

I had the pleasure of meeting many people involved in the San Francisco Bay Area fashion and beauty world, including Donna Kato, Style Editor at The San Jose Mercury News, Annie from the beauty Web site bellasugar.com and Christine M. from the blog Temptalia.com. And of course there were all the lovely folks at MAC, like Allison Greenberg and Heather Park, a Manager in MAC’s Global Communications and beauty blog connoisseur!

So what happens during a four-course meal when you get a bunch of beauty-obsessed writers, bloggers, and MAC Artists together? The conversation inevitably goes to the products. In between bites of heirloom tomato salad, filet mignon and truffle mashed potatoes, there were declarations of brush devotion (Victor loves the 266, Christine loves the 187), exclamations of life-changing MAC products (Heather swears by Mineralize Skinfinish and Liquidlast Liner), and the skinny on MAC makeup on the runway.

So what’s your favorite brush?
082207dinner
To create the looks for the 2007 runway, Victor and Louise first met with the designers at the San Francisco MAC Pro Store to discuss collections and the designer’s makeup vision. Victor says that this year we’ll be seeing a lot more ’40s-inspired looks and lots of sophisticated smokey eyes.

I was also not surprised to discover there’s an element of improv backstage when it comes to achieving a look. Last year, for the designer Genevieve Primavera’s show, the MAC makeup team at first had trouble creating a deep, dark goth lip with traditional pencils. Victor decided to improv by using Fluidline Liner in Macroviolet and applying the liner on the lips with the 266 brush. The result? Deep, dark-colored lips that would make any vampire jealous.

Heather and I talked at length about how beauty bloggers are changing the face of the beauty industry. She mentioned many interesting facts and statistics she’s learned since becoming MAC’s blog expert. Would you believe that 63% of women who read a positive review of a product in a beauty blog go out and purchase that product? Beauty bloggers are beginning to hold serious sway in the beauty product court, yet many traditional retailers and fashion show organizers don’t recognize blogging as a legitimate form of journalism. MAC is doing cutting edge work by cultivating relationships with bloggers; in due time I think we’ll see more and more cosmetics companies and retailers actively courting the blogosphere.

Another shot of the MAC dinner held in the Barolo room in Perbacco restaurant
082207dinner2

After dessert, a chocolate molten cake that sent me to chocoholic ecstasy, the dinner attendees received a lovely goody bag with MAC products from the new Smoke Signals Limited Edition Collection. I’m looking forward to reviewing all of it for you soon!

Who knew there were others out there who could wax philosophic for hours about the merits of concealer? It was a great evening with lively and interesting people, and I had a fantastic time.

I’m so glad that I get to share this with you! Have a stunning, yes stunning, Thursday.

MAC Tips and Tricks: Brushes

March 1st, 2007 by Karen Leave a Comment

I’m getting so much mileage from the Barbie Loves MAC Seminar I went to a few weeks ago. I finally rifled through the technique folder they gave us and found some cool tips and tricks pages. Here are the best tips from the page for brushes:

Tips and Tricks: Brushes

When choosing brushes consider the following…

  1. Firmer fibers tend to deliver a faster application than softer fibers.
  2. Softer fibers tend to offer greater control of color application.
  3. Try applying skincare with brushes for a luxurious experience.
  4. The 190 brush works well for applying masks and moisturizers.
  5. The 194 brush words well with eye cream.
  6. The 180 brush works well to lather shave cream on the face or body.
  7. When dipping brushes into pressed powder products, like eye shadows, do not mash the brush into the pan. This causes breakage of the fibers. It’s better for the brush and more effective to either swipe from side to side or run the brush around in a circle to gather powder.
  8. Try using two brushes for some of those tricky applications, like smokey eyes. Use one brush to pick up and apply the color and the other brush to blend.
  9. When applying makeup, try holding the brush further away from the hair bundle, almost like holding chopsticks. This allows for greater control in application. Not to mention, with the hands out of the way, greater visibility!
  10. Brushes for personal use should be cleaned about once a week. For emollient-based product on the brush use cleanse off oil to emulsify and then brush cleanser to clean and condition.
  11. If after makeup application you find it necessary to throw your brushes in the bag before cleaning, be sure to store the brushes you used for liquid or cream products separately from the ones used for powder products, to avoid the cream dirtying the other brushes. And if using the same bag for both, try wrapping the brushes for cream products in plastic wrap or a tissue before tossing them in the bag. 🙂
