I Can’t Imagine Falling Out of Love with Laura Mercier’s New Baked Eye Colour Palette

December 22nd, 2011 by Karen 15 Comments

Are they macarons, or are they eyeshadows? Well, that depends. The baked beauties in Laura Mercier’s new Baked Eye Colour Palette ($48) just might be a bit of both.

Like macarons, they make me smile. 🙂 All five of the shimmery shadows in brown, bronze, beige, pink and purple deposit very little fallout on my cheeks, and I love the glowing, wide-awake look their punchy pigments bestow upon my eyes.

The palette, a holiday release, also comes with a time-saving surprise — a dual-tipped brush with a flat eyeshadow brush on one end and a dense, pointed cream shadow brush on the other. I’ve tried the shades both wet and dry with the flat shadow brush and got some fast, fresh looks, and because the shadows adhere to my lids so well, I didn’t have to spend any extra time cleaning up fallout on my cheeks.

The Laura Mercier Travel Brush Kit Successfully Tries to Sweep Sticker Shock Under the Rug

December 22nd, 2011 by Karen 11 Comments

Okay, now I want you to brace yourself, and take a deep breath.

Good? Okay, now when you’re ready, slowly read the following line…

$85.

Now that feeling there? — that split second when you felt the air forced out your lungs and could barely draw a breath? That’s called sticker shock, and the $85 Laura Mercier Travel Brush Set causes it a lot.

Thankfully, it subsides (somewhat) after a bit of number crunching and quality play time with these super soft brushes.

The kit, one of several of Laura’s holiday 2011 offerings, includes four travel size dual-ended eye brushes, a full size skunk brush and a faux snakeskin pouch with a removable insert.

Now, if this were just an $85 kit containing four travel eye brushes, a face brush and a cute, zippered pouch, I’d probably feel disappointed and a little upset, but the dual-tipped brushes serve to justify the price. With brush heads on both ends of four of the brushes, it’s like getting nine brushes for $9.44 each — practically a steal for Laura Mercier brushes, which usually sell for $30 a pop.

As for the quality of these travel brushes, color me impressed. I haven’t observed any shedding, loose ferrules or construction mistakes, and their performance seems to be on par with Laura’s more expensive full-size eye brushes.

Better yet, and why I really like this set, it covers all of the most important bases for my eye looks, with brushes for brows, concealer, liner, and for applying and blending eyeshadow.

And the full-size skunk brush? Amazing! I can’t believe I went without it for so long. It buffs powders, blushes and bronzers with a very light, natural touch. Great for getting that flawless, airbrushed look.

Today Mother Nature Did My Makeup, and She Used Products from Make Up For Ever, MAC, NARS, Pacifica and Laura Mercier

November 29th, 2011 by Karen 44 Comments

make up for ever wild & chic palette

Today I found my makeup inspiration by looking down — down at the multi-colored leaves scattered on the sidewalk outside. Yup, I turned to Mother Nature this afternoon and reached for colors in copper, beige and khaki for my face of the day.

I’ve been meaning to try a look with Make Up For Ever’s new Wild & Chic Palette ($39) for, um, ever! MUFE fans, this palette does not disappoint. The rich colors are super easy to blend, and I think they look pretty great in pictures, too.

This look also features my new favorite lip combo — Pacifica Color Quench Lip Tint in Blood Orange topped with Laura Mercier Lip Glace in Blush. I wore it last week to Thanksgiving dinner and even got a few compliments from the makeup-loving cousins. 🙂

The look also features a few other tidbits from MAC and NARS.

A Pocketbook of Purples with the New Laura Mercier Luxe Colour Portfolio

October 26th, 2011 by Karen 19 Comments

laura mercier luxe colour portfolio (7)

Three days later, and I still have no idea what the new $98 Laura Mercier Luxe Colour Portfolio has to do with snakes.

With its lid shut and its faux snakeskin midriff showing, doesn’t the new limited edition holiday kit have an almost Western motif? I keep seeing it in the hands of a woman wearing bloomers and white gloves on the wooden steps of an old saloon…

But then when it opens, exposing a palette of six powder eyeshadows, three cake liners, two powder blushes and three travel-size eye brushes, I see the palette in a different light — one that’s purple, kinda glamorous, and not all that Western at all.

How Far Would Gulliver Travel for the Little Glosses in the Laura Mercier Limited Edition Mini Lip Glacé Set?

October 25th, 2011 by Karen 28 Comments

Wearing Laura Mercier Lip Glacé in Rose

Minis rule! — and I’m not just saying that as someone who’s usually the shortest person in the room (even in heels). 🙂 The diminutive glosses in the new Laura Mercier Limited Edition Mini Lip Glacé Set may share my challenges with vertical stature, but that’s only one of the reasons I think they’re such a dang good deal.

From the left: After Hours, Blush, Quartz, Rose and Sparkling

At first glance, the $48 kit may seem expensive, but it makes pretty good sense if you do the math. The price on the set translates into big savings on what are arguably some of the most underrated glosses available on counters now.

I’ve been wearing and loving the Lip Glacés for years, and while the full-size versions cost $22 for a 0.159-oz. tube, these smaller 0.1-oz. tubes work out to just $9.60 apiece. Even ounce for ounce, they’re a much better deal ($138.38 per ounce for the full-size ones vs. $96 per ounce for the minis).

Not too shabby, tabby, especially if you love super shiny glosses and hyphenated words, like non-drying, long-wearing and non-sticky.

With the Mini Lip Glacé Set you get five meow-worthy glosses, each one packed with pigment, in a range of shades from dramatic to nude, and all of them come with a convenient doe-foot applicator.

The shades…

  • After Hours: a creamy, peachy pink with golden micro-glitter
  • Sparkling: a shimmery nude beige
  • Rose: a shimmery reddish pink with golden glitter
  • Blush: a creamy brownish pink
  • Quartz: a shimmery reddish sienna
