The New MAC Kissable Lipcolour Glosses Sure Are Great Kissers

December 27th, 2010 by Karen 45 Comments

mac kissable lipcolour woo me swatch

Like silk. That’s how the 12 glosses in the new MAC Kissable Lipcolours line feel on my lips.

Coming in for a landing with the MAC Peacocky collection on January 6, these brash beauties take their cues from peacock feathers — bold but lightweight (like a feather) pink, coral, red, fuchsia, blue (!), brown and mauve — with a thin, non-sticky texture like that of a liquid lipstick, but the crazy shiny finish of a gloss.

What can we expect from the MAC Peacocky Collection? Brace yourself for intense lip and eye colors with dramatic finishes. The new Kissable Lipcolours are joined by a new line of pigmented metallic shadows. The Mega Metal Shadows ($19.50 each) will make eyes shine like the edge of a vorpal sword in shades of white, champagne, mauve, gold, violet, teal burgundy, copper, green, purple, navy and black.

The way these Kissable Lipcolours feel reminds me of how smooth and comfy the MAC Cremesheens feel, but they don’t look anything alike. These pack much more pigment. Where the Cremesheens whisper sweet nothings of light lip color, the Kissable Lipcolours SCREAM AND SHOUT! These colors are bold and cover lips with completely.

The two I’ve tried, Woo Me (a light pink) and Temper Tantra (a midtone reddish brown that must have been inspired by MAC Paramount Lipstick), set down a crazy amount of color.

Quick-Change Artists, Do You Plan to Make MAC Stylishly Yours?

December 23rd, 2010 by Karen 31 Comments

MAC Neon Orange on Karen of Makeup and Beauty Blog

You don’t have to be a crazy cat lady (or a rotund tabby cat with a low-hanging belly) to appreciate a strong cat eye liner look with bold lips. It’s an enduring, timeless combination that looks great on almost everyone.

The new 19-piece MAC Stylishly Yours collection, a limited edition release for eyes, lips and face (pieces $14-22 each), embodies this tried-and-true classic in a modernized, 21st century way.

The collection purrs onto MAC counters, stores and maccosmetics.com on December 26 and stays put through January 11, 2011. Tabs, being the ho for brights that he is, can’t wait.

A few MAC Stylishly Yours products clockwise from the mascara wand at the lower left: Zoom Lash Mascara in New Hue, Cream Colour Base in Virgin Isle, Lipstick in Neon Orange, Cream Colour Base in Movie Star Red and Fluidline in Dark Diversion

With Stylishly Yours, MAC offers fans fun, fast ways to give makeup looks a shot of dramatic color (without having to think too hard). Eyes in the look are kept simple, clean, and simultaneously dramatic with matte black and burgundy gel liner and mascara. Bright coral, pink, magenta, red and violet leap onto lips and cheeks in lipsticks, cream blushes (they double as lip colors, too!) and loose pigments with creamy and shimmery finishes. But that’s not all — two pink pressed highlighting powders imbue faces with a lovely soft sheen.

What I really like about the release are how the brights are both sophisticated and easy to use.

When you know you want to wear something bold but don’t want to invest the time into a super complex drag queen eye with teal, gold and purple, you could slip into one of these lipsticks instead, top it off with a layer of Clear Lipglass, and strut out the door.

Or, you could quickly do a swipe of thick burgundy cat eye liner with the blackened plum Fluidline in Dark Diversion, add a few layers of the burgundy New Hue Zoom Lash Mascara to your lashes, and blend one of the Cream Colour Bases (Virgin Isle’s my fave!) on your cheeks and lips.

MAC Fix+ Lavender Setting Spray Makes Your Makeup Behave

December 23rd, 2010 by Karen 31 Comments

mac fix+ lavender

Since I like MAC Fix+ and the scent of lavender, falling for the new MAC Fix+ Lavender ($18, part of the upcoming MAC Cham Pale Collection) was sort of a given.

Or was it?

I use the original Fix+ almost daily with foundation, lightly misting my brush with it before blending to help products adhere to my skin, and I was hoping this latest scented version would smell just as light, refreshing and feminine as both the original and 2009’s limited edition Fix+ Rose.

A MAC Fix+ It Tip

This effect’s even better in the summer, but I like to store my bottle of Fix+ in the fridge; the mist feels gloriously refreshing chilled.

A colorless infusion of water, glycerin, vitamins and minerals, Fix+ Lavender seems to work just as well as the original, but the vanilla-ish lavender scent just doesn’t get along with my sensitive schnoz. Heavy and musky — almost like a men’s cologne — the scent makes my head pulse if I’m not careful about how much I use. Luckily, the fragrance dissipates in no time flat.

I’m Bubbly About the Neutrals in the MAC Cham Pale Collection

December 22nd, 2010 by Karen 68 Comments

mac champale on karen of makeup and beauty blog

I would like to propose a toast, friends — my very first serious toast ever — and I think there’s something fitting about it being dedicated to makeup. If you’ll bear with me for a moment, please raise your glass, be it filled with bubbly, wine, water, chai latte or anything else, to the MAC Cham Pale collection, one of the most inspiring neutral releases this lass has seen this year.

Launching right after Christmas (Dec. 26), the limited edition collection is a relatively small one for MAC, with just 26 pieces for the face, eyes, cheeks, lips, nails and skin in prices ranging from $14-36.

As much as I love neutral colors like gray, beige and and peach, collections dominated by them run the risk of venturing into snooze territory, especially when the finishes are mostly matte. They may be practical as all getout, but matte beige and gray don’t exactly set the world on fire, ya know?

Which is why I’m so surprised by MAC Cham Pale. The collection does for neutrals what Glee did for musicals on television. Like a mimosa on the beach, these finishes — which range from soft, pearly shimmers to high shine frosts — sparkle in the light. MAC made something practical into something inspiring, and I think it’s a refreshing take.

The color palette almost looks like someone started by melting a gilded gold and silver jewelry box and siphoned the colors into makeup pans, tubes and pots. Quiet pink, cool gray, warm peach and inky onyx weave their way into the metallics, keeping the colors soft and wearable. Nothing’s either too warm or too cool, and I’m betting these shades are going to look fabulous on a wide range of skin tones.

I love everything in this release, but the eye makeup is exciting me most, especially the Paint Pots and the quad.

Concealer Comparison: MAC Select Moisture Cover and Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer

December 11th, 2010 by Karen 32 Comments

Jessica

Friend me on FacebookWritten by Jessica

It’s a battle of epic proportions! Blogger Jessica pits two powerhouses of the beauty world together in today’s guest post. Dark circles better hide!

I can’t remember a time when I didn’t suffer from dark circles, yet I only recently discovered the wonders of a nice concealer. I’m an avid viewer of Pixiwoo on YouTube and noticed that both Sam and Nic use different products to deal with their under-eye circles. I purchased MAC Select Moisture Cover Concealer after watching one of Nic’s videos, and I instantly fell in love. Then, later, I found Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer, and now I love both of them so much that I decided to do a product comparison.

I began by taking a photo of myself not wearing any makeup. AHHHH! I know. Shameless. Well, I wanted you to be able to see the unevenness of my skin. I have pretty heavy dark circles that are very noticeable if I don’t wear concealer, and I also have large cheeks which cast a shadow on my dark circles, making them appear even worse!

Not wearing any makeup

I proceeded to do all of my makeup without using concealer. As you can see, I get quite dark near my tear ducts, and my cheeks, again, cast a nice shadow over my dark circles! 🙁

Makeup without concealer

Then, I put the two products on each of my eyes, Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer on the left and MAC Select Moisture Cover on the right.

Unblended concealer
Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer on the left, MAC Select Moisture Cover on the right

After blending, I took several photos to show the differences. The left side is Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer in Sand, the right is MAC Select Moisture Cover in NW25. As you can see, the Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer covers a little bit better. It’s also a bit thicker in consistency, which I believe is why it conceals my circles so well. MAC Select is more of a liquid. Although the shades look really different before they’ve been blended, both of them actually blend quite well into my skin. I also like how they each reflect the light, and both of them have nice finishes.

The two blended concealers

I think the difference is the most obvious in this photo. The left eye (Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer) shows less of the purple/brown color that’s usually present in my under-eye circles. Unfortunately, the MAC Select Moisture Cover on the right side looks sad.

Looking down

THE OVERALL WINNER: Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer in Sand!!! Although I originally believed it might settle into the fine lines under my eyes, it held up quite well. Creamy, easy to blend, smooth and good coverage — I would definitely repurchase this concealer again. 🙂

Like Love, Pink 4 Friday Lipstick by MAC and Nicki Minaj Is Fleeting

December 7th, 2010 by Karen 74 Comments

karen of makeup and beauty blog reviews Pink 4 Friday Lipstick by MAC and Nicki Minaj
Wearing Pink 4 Friday Lipstick by MAC and Nicki Minaj all by its lonesome (left); with MAC Lip Liner in Spice and MAC Clear Lipglass (right)

I’m sure she’s out there somewhere — the girl who can pull off cool and creamy MAC Pink 4 Friday Lipstick ($14.50) all by itself. And wherever you are, you gorgeous princess (or prince) of great makeup fortune, I salute you (and pump my fist in the air, Jersey Shore style)!

mac pink 4 friday nicki minaj

The extremely limited-edition color, just 4 days (!) in this world, is a collaboration between MAC and hip-hop artist Nicki Minaj (to coincide with the release of her new album, Pink Friday).

MAC loves to fire up their fetishists (like me) with hard-to-snare products. I can’t help it, and I think there’s an element of human nature behind the phenomenon, but knowing that the color won’t be available for very long does make me want it even more.

There’s only one way to pick up Pink 4 Friday, and that’s online, and only on exactly two more dates — Friday, December 10 and Friday, December 17 — beginning at midnight Eastern Time on each of the dates and lasting 24 hours. Sadly, the first two Fridays already came and went (November 26 and December 3). 🙁

I gotta be honest — I loves me some Nicki Minaj (got Pink Friday on repeat right now), but this creamy, pale pastel pink’s not a cinch to wear.
