Saturday Surfing (and NARS Holiday 2010 Color Comparisons)

October 16th, 2010 by Karen 7 Comments

Good morning and happy Saturday to ya! How was your night? I didn’t do squat, thank you very much. 🙂 But then I never leave the house anymore except to visit Tuttimelon in the middle of the night. I spent the evening on the couch with a bucket of taro root frozen yogurt, watching a Jersey Shore marathon… I don’t know when I turned into a Cathy comic (“Ack!”).

Before we dive into the joys that are Saturdays and surfing, here are comparison swatches of a few pieces from the new NARS Holiday 2010 Collection (with some bits thrown in from fall).

The purple shade in the Melusive Duo versus the Daphne Eyeshadow Single from fall 2010:

Melusine Eyeshadow Duo on left, Daphne Eyeshadow on right

Swatch of Melusine Eyeshadow Duo on left, Daphne Eyeshadow on right

The purple shade from Melusine looks a little plummier than the blue-violet Daphne Eyeshadow Single, which also looks sheerer than the purple in Melusine.

Oh, I got a couple of requests to see Bougainville Lip Gloss beside Strawberry Fields from fall 2010…

Bougainville on left, Strawberry Fields on right

Both shades sure are pigmented, aren’t they? I dig ’em both a lot.

Saturday Surfing: Sites I Surfed Today

  • Stylecaster’s got a story on four DIY projects to try at home this weekend, and it includes my lip gloss organizer!
  • This Sephora Halloween Minx Manicure looks like fun.
  • No creasing and they’re cheap, too? Sounds like I need to pick up a few of these cheap drugstores liners from E.L.F.
  • These crazy paper heels aren’t designed for walking, but they sure look hella cool.
  • For all my fellow time strapped peeps, here are 30 ways to save 30 minutes a day.
  • What an adorable black and white kitten. He’s listening to music! Aww… This made my morning.
  • Ooh! I think I’m gonna try this sophisticated pin-up look!

I hope you have a lovely Saturday. Rest up if you can! 🙂

Karen

NARS Holiday 2010 Collection: Have a Berry Francois Christmas and a Happy NARS Year

October 14th, 2010 by Karen 60 Comments

nars holiday 2010

Holy wow, pumpkin! All I have to say is werk!

I’m not talking work like cubicles, time sheets or lame vacation requests, but the neck swerving, hair flipping, three snaps in z-formation kinda work — the kind of work NARS obviously put into their holiday 2010 collection.

For the holidays, it’s nice to see something almost traditional — with lots of golds, silvers, berries and plums — from such an untraditional brand.

But I did say “almost.” 🙂 After all, this is still NARS we’re talking about. The colors are a casual affair, many of them shimmery and saturated but not heavy or foreboding.

Francois usually likes to throw in a few quirky shades, but this time he shows some restraint to tell a tightly woven color story. He still cuts loose, of course, with unexpected pops of taupe, peach and blue, but it all just fits together.

With the exception of sheer Sex Appeal Blush and Little Darling Lipstick, the lip, eye and nail products burst with color. Francois, inspired by Irish heiress and fashion icon Daphne Guinness, aimed for seductive, audacious and bold, and dagnabbit, homeboy nailed it.

The company’s trademark quality is evident throughout the release, from the pigments to their application and smooth textures.

Oh, yeah. The new eyeshadow trio in the pic at the top is a first for NARS. They’ve never done an eyeshadow trio before, and I like it (doesn’t it look like a Rothko painting?).

If you’re afraid the eye colors might be too intense, don’t worry; I think they’re still work friendly. Just use a light touch when you apply them, and dilute, dilute, dilute.

I Like NARS Pure Matte Lipstick, as a Matte-er of Fact

August 27th, 2010 by Karen 47 Comments

nars pure matte review

You know what they say, right? You can take the girl out of the ’90s, but you can’t take the ’90s out of the girl.

Well, I’ve never actually heard that before…but wouldn’t it make an awesome fortune cookie?

Back in the day matte lipstick was my BFF, and I always had at least one in my little black backpack (gawd, remember those?). I loved the look, but dangnabbit those old school matte formulas made my lips dry and flaky!

After all these years, I still love matte lips, and now with uber-moisturizing formulas like the one in new NARS Pure Matte Lipstick ($25), matte lips can be comfy, too (think spaghetti strap dress/baby-T combo, circa 1995).

Available in six shades with spectacular geographic names — Volga (a deep aubergine), Bangkok (a soft rose), Tonkin (a plum), Tere De Feue (a blackish cherry), Tashkent (a nude beige) and Vesuvio (a bold red) — the unscented, unflavored line conditions lips with hydrating vitamin E, wild mango butter and acai oil.

All four of the ones I’ve kissed so far feel smooth and soft on my lips. The texture’s considerably thicker than the similarly packaged MAC Mattenes (which I happen to like a lot), but isn’t as slick/slippery.

Lipstick Tips from Francois Nars

  • For a modern matte look, choose a lip color close to your natural skin tone, or pair a darker lip color with simple face makeup
  • For full, hard-to-miss lips, go with an audacious color spruced up with a dab of gloss or shimmer applied in the middle
  • Use lip liner to fill the shape of your lips, but make sure you blend out any obvious edges
  • Avoid over-applying your lipstick; the more you wearing, the heavier it looks (and, interestingly, the quicker it wears off)

It’s a Beautiful Life, With or Without a Lip Brush: The New NARS Lip and Cheek Palette

August 9th, 2010 by Karen 54 Comments

nars beautiful life palette review swatches

The universe is filled with things I do not understand, things like Justin Bieber fever, Crocs, and why NARS chose not to include a lip brush in the Beautiful Life Lip and Cheek Palette ($55).

At first blush, it looks like a traveler’s makeup dream come true — compact, cute, with a convenient zippered case. The included mirror works well for on-the-go touchups, and by leaving out powder products (it comes with four lipsticks and two cream blushes), NARS eliminated annoying product cross pollination (when your powders spill all over your cream products). So smart!

They thought of everything — almost. I know NARS doesn’t usually include brushes with their palettes, but I wish they would have found room in this one for a lip brush. Beautiful Life is just so obviously designed for travel; a brush would have been a great addition. Of course, I’m a stickler when it comes to packaging.

That aside, what’s a palette without pretty colors, right? These go great together. NARS included a versatile mix of business and party shades here, and the blushes even double as highlighters, too.

I’m a little bummed about one of the products in the palette — Honolulu Honey lipstick. Honolulu is one of my favorite cities, but this Honey looks kinda cakey on my lips. It seems to do a bit better, though, when I use very little and apply it with my fingers. I may also just mix it with other lip colors to help it along.

It’s a NARS Beautiful Life, and Only You Palette Swatches

August 4th, 2010 by Karen 56 Comments

Do you suppose Francois Nars was bumping vintage Ace of Base when he named his new fall lip and cheek palette “Beautiful Life”?

It’s a beautiful life…oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.

I secretly hope so, because even though the song’s hella cheesy, I also think it’s kinda awesome. 🙂

The new NARS Beautiful Life Lip and Cheek ($55) and Only You Eye and Cheek ($65) palettes for fall, available now on the NARS website, are equally spectacular (but in a totally non-cheesy way).

NARS Mangrove: A Green, Gold and Teal Tuesday Face of the Day

July 20th, 2010 by Karen 80 Comments

nars mangrove

man•grove |ˈmanˌgrōv|
noun
1 a tree or shrub that grows in muddy, chiefly tropical coastal swamps that are inundated at high tide. Mangroves typically have numerous tangled roots above ground and form dense thickets.

2 a grove of shirtless hot dudes : Ooooh, gurl, check out that mangrove over there!

Even if someone at NARS had foliage in mind when they named this golden green eyeshadow, I can’t help but picture something else. 🙂

NARS Mangrove eyeshadow

Mangrove bloomed as an eyeshadow single with the NARS Fall 2010 collection. Francois (first name basis, yo!) loves unexpected colors and textures, and Mangrove fits the bill.

My first impression? — pureed vegetable baby mush. As an eyeshadow, it doesn’t jump out of its pan as something traditionally pretty, but like the plant from whence it draws its name, it just needs a little time to grow.

NARS Daphne and Eye: A Monday Face of the Day

July 19th, 2010 by Karen 62 Comments

nars daphne eyeshadow

We’re almost there. That’s it up ahead — the Monday finish line — and we’re about to cross it together. 🙂

How was your day? Good, I hope.

Mine wasn’t bad as far as Mondays go. I rode my bike for the first time in forever over my lunch break (hello, sore booty!) and had a grand old time experimenting with the new NARS Daphne eyeshadow.

Remember it from the NARS fall 2010 collection? The pretty purple girl?

Oh, she’s quite the charmer… If you like sheer purple matte shadows, beware; she could rock your boat. I took her out for a spin today, and now I’m smitten.

Daphne and Eye: A Monday Face of the Day

The Eyes

The first thing I did was find my flat eyeshadow brush…which turned out to be the hardest part of this look (it was hiding in a purse)! With the brush (a MAC 239), I packed several layers of Daphne on my lids, drawing the color up into the crease. Next, I swept the shimmery golden brown side from the NARS Rajasthan duo, another new product for fall, into the crease and up a bit to the brow bone (I like how the shimmer contrasts with Daphne’s matte finish).

Then, to define the whole eye and tie it all together, I lined the upper lash line with the shimmery dark blue shadow from the same duo (Rajasthan), and lined the lower lash line with Coconut Grove (another eyeshadow from the fall collection).

The Lips and Cheeks

Smokey purple eyes without coordinating cheeks and lips are like Salt without Pepa, or Keith without sweat. To make sure Daphne wouldn’t feel lonely, I brushed NARS Sin blush onto my cheeks and a mix of NARS Strawberry Fields and NARS Greek Holiday lipglosses on my lips (Question: Do you ever wear multiple lipgloss colors?).

NARS Fall 2010: My Dinner Date Face of the Night/Day

July 8th, 2010 by Karen 32 Comments

Yeah, my tummy just rumbled, but I can’t tell if I’m hungry for food or hungry for more makeup. Some days I swear I derive more sustenance from NARS and MAC (more In The Groove swatches coming soon) than I do from actual edibles, ha!

This afternoon I invited four tidbits from the nine-piece NARS Fall 2010 collection to play with me and the NARS Orgasm/Laguna Blush and Bronzing Duo (NOTE: all seasonal NARS products are rolled into their permanent collection). At the time I didn’t have dinner date makeup in mind, but El Hub just asked me to Thai…and he suggested I call this look my Dinner Date Face of the Night/Day. 🙂

NARS fall 2010 items clockwise from left: Tzarine Duo Eyeshadow, Coconut Grove Singe Eyeshadow, Palladium Soft Touch Shadow Pencil, Strawberry Fields Lip Gloss. NARS Orgasm/Laguna Blush and Bronzing Duo from the permanent line

For the eyes, I layered the shimmery gunmetal gray shadow from the Tzarine Duo on top of the Palladium Soft Touch Shadow Pencil and swept the shimmery beige shadow from Tzarine below my brow bone. Then, I lined my lash and waterlines with Coconut Grove Single Eyeshadow.
