Urban Decay Halloween Eyes, Rated PG (Purple and Gold)

October 30th, 2009 by Karen 29 Comments

urban decay halloween fotd karen-2

Fo’ reals, it’s physically impossible to take pictures of yourself wearing purple and gold striped eyeshadow without making a cra-zaaay face! 🙂

I was feeling adventurous yesterday, so I decided to try another potential Halloween look, this one inspired by this face chart from Urban Decay.

All of the makeup for my lips and eyes is from UD, namely the 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils in Eldorado (from the Super Stash kit) and Ransom, Heavy Metal Glitter Liner in Midnight Cowboy, Deluxe Eyeshadows in Frigid and Freakshow, Skyscraper Mascara, 24-7 Glide-On Lip Pencil in Wallflower and Lipstick in Naked.

On my cheeks I’m wearing Benefit Dallas blush…

The Urban Decay Smoke Out Palette: How Would You Wear Sweet Lucy?

October 13th, 2009 by Karen 8 Comments

urban decay smoke out sweet lucy swatches

Before bed I like to surf for celebrity makeup inspiration online.

I’ll bookmark the looks I think I might like to copy and save them in a folder ironically titled, “Celebrity Makeup Inspiration.” 🙂

Last night I bookmarked this pic of Jennifer Hudson at the 2009 Grammy Awards.

Hello, hawtness! I love the black, gray and white eye she’s wearing. Soo sultry…

This morning I rifled through my makeup stash to see if I had dupes for a similar look when I remembered Urban Decay’s Smoke Out Kit in Sweet Lucy ($34).

It’s one of three Smoke Out Kits UD released for the holidays. This one’s all about the smokey eyes.

Each Smoke Out Kit comes with four powder shadows in coordinating shades, a mini 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Zero (a deep black), a mini tube of Skyscraper Mascara (black) and a tiny eye brush.

  • Sweet Lucy: Blacks and grays for smokey looks
  • Ju-Ju: Browns for neutral looks
  • Yerba: Deep greens for colorful looks

A Homecoming Dance Makeup Tutorial Featuring Urban Decay Cosmetics

October 9th, 2009 by Karen 41 Comments

homecoming-makeup-tutorial

If you’re feeling blue about Homecoming, you’re not the only one. The color’s been a popular choice this season for formals and dances.

MBB reader Cheyda is looking for makeup ideas to go with her blue dress.

Hi Karen!

I am going to my first formal dance (homecoming) in about a week.

I’m wearing a navy strapless dress with my hair down, and I have NO idea what makeup to wear.

I want it to be kind of dramatic, but not too out there. Plus, it needs to stay put.

Any suggestions as far as colors and brands?

Thanks a bunch!

Cheyda

Hi Cheyda,

How exciting! Dances are so much fun. Not only do you get to play dress up, but they’re also great opportunities to try new makeup looks.

It sounds like you want to be noticed without looking overly done. I got you. 🙂

Before we get into details, here are some things to consider:

Photography. Chances are you’ll be in some pictures, so you’ll want makeup that looks good in photos. When I do makeup for pictures, I wear a little more than I normally would. Natural, everyday-type looks, those done with a very light hand, can look washed out under flash photography.

Leading up to Homecoming, take a few practice swings at your look. Go from start to finish and ask friends or family (or use your camera’s shutter timer) to snap some test pictures with the flash. It’ll give you time to adjust your technique before the dance.

Long-wear products. If you plan to dance the night away, you’ll want your makeup to last, so primers, waterproof formulas and long-wear products (like lipsticks vs. gloss) are musts. Layering also helps increase wear time.

To go with your navy dress. I’m thinking a shimmery purplish blue smokey eye with pinkish nude lips and a sheer, matte pink cheek. What do ya think? 🙂 I can see it now… The colors should pop without looking to matchy-matchy or melodramatic.

What you’ll need

  1. A shimmery peachy eye primer like Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion in Sin ($17)
  2. A shimmery golden beige shadow with glitter like Urban Decay Eyeshadow Midnight Cowboy Rides Again ($16)
  3. A long-wear, shimmery blue eye pencil like Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Binge ($36, part of the Super Stash set)
  4. A shimmery purplish blue eyeshadow like Urban Decay Deluxe Eyeshadow in Frigid ($18)
  5. A black eye pencil like Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Zero ($17)
  6. A waterproof mascara like Stila Lash Visor in Black ($12.50)
  7. A sheer matte pink blush like Chanel Joues Contrastes in Rose Dust ($40)
  8. A nude lip liner like MAC Cremestick Pearl Liner in Gingerroot ($14.50)
  9. A nude lipstick like Benefit Full-Finish Lipstick in Lady’s Choice ($18)

You can find drugstore alternatives (Sonia Kashuk makes some great ones) to most, if not all, of these products. If you’re interested, shoot me a line and I’ll send some suggestions. 🙂

Urban Decay Holiday 2009: 24-7 Set in Stereophonic

October 8th, 2009 by Karen 20 Comments

urban decay stereophonic 24 7 set 1

“Urban Decay is rocking my world lately.” — MBB Reader Louise Gray

Louise, you took the words right outta my mouth! Cruelty-free Urban Decay took vegan makeup mainstream with bright colors and glitter, and they’re still going strong with what I think are some really interesting and fun launches for fall and holiday (Book of Shadows Vol. II!!!) .

Makeup newbies, or those new to the brand, may want to keep eyes peeled for UD’s new holiday liners. Called the 24/7 Set in Stereophonic ($29), the kit I’m talking about here includes four large 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils in some very wearable colors, along with one full-size Heavy Metal Glitter Liner (for when you need a little sparkle in your life).

Angel Karen: “Young lady, you really should be working. You’ve fooled around enough today. Time to get down to business right now.”

Devil Karen: “Duuuuude, work sucks! Swatch those nine mini-pencil liners already. It’s a holiday set, for crying out loud. Purple, blue, brown, gold, black, green — soooo many colors. I’m not kidding here; these will glide like buttah on your lids.”

Urban Decay’s Novel New Book of Shadows Vol II

September 30th, 2009 by Karen 40 Comments

Urban Decay Book of Shadows Vol. II shadows

I devour books like they’re food! There aren’t many things I cherish more than a few uninterrupted hours alone with a good novel in a comfy chair, mmm…

Now, Urban Decay’s newest “book” (Book of Shadows Vol. II ($48)) may not have an ISBN and be in stock at Borders, but it’s still a novel product that I wouldn’t mind curling up with on a brisk fall afternoon. 🙂

Urban Decay Primer Potions: Primed and Ready

September 10th, 2009 by Karen 33 Comments

urban-decay-primer-potion-1

Looking to step up your makeup game this fall, girls? Consider a few of Urban Decay’s new primers for face, lips and lashes:

  1. Pore Perfecting Complexion Primer Potion ($30)
  2. Brightening Complexion Primer Potion ($30)
  3. Eyelash Primer Potion ($20)
  4. Lip Primer Potion ($20)

These bad boys deliver an almost airbrushed application for smooth skin, luscious lips and longer, thicker lashes.

To get the most bang for your buck, Urban Decay International Makeup Artist Eric Jimenez suggests a few insider tricks.

urban-decay-spring-2009-24-7-glide-on-eye-pencil-eric
Smile, Eric!

Flawless makeup in t-minus three, two, one…

Urban Decay Complexion Primer Potion — Pore Perfecting

urban-decay-primer-potion-2

What it is:
An oil-free, velvety foundation primer with a texture like medium-weight lotion.

What it does:
Minimizes the size of pores, gets oil under control (great for areas like the t-zone) and helps foundation look smooth and flawless.

How to apply:
Begin by cleansing and moisturizing your skin. Cleansing encourages better absorption of moisturizer. Blot away any excess with a tissue.

Next, with your favorite foundation brush (interestingly, Eric prefers stiffer synthetic brushes made from Taklon or nylon), apply Pore Perfecting Primer to forehead, nose, the apples of the cheeks and chin. Blend in an outward direction.

While the primer is wet, apply your foundation with the same brush. Eric suggests blending both together, rather than layering one on top of the other, because “You get more of an airbrushed effect.”

Breaking it down

  • Eric likes synthetic Taklon or nylon brushes precisely because the man-made fibers don’t absorb as much product as natural fibers do. With that, he says, you can really make your foundation last, as one is apt to use and waste less.
  • If you have very oily skin, avoid applying primers and foundation with your fingers. Being warm, they can stimulate the pores on the face to up their oil output.
  • Live where it’s hot and humid? Pore Perfecting keeps makeup in place even in the stickiest, steamiest locales.

Urban Decay Complexion Primer Potion — Brightening

urban-decay-primer-potion-3

What it is:
A lavender-tinted, oil-free primer to brighten, smooth and extend the wear time of foundation.

What it does:
Brightening’s color-correcting lavender tint adds a reflective, but not necessarily shimmery, look to foundation. Eric applies it wherever there are fine lines, like the fine lines around the eyes, nostrils, mouth, and in the hollows of the cheeks. Opt for this formulation if you have combination skin.

How to apply:
Apply in the same manner as the Pore Perfecting formulation (the steps above).

Breaking it down

  • Anticipating a big event? Exfoliate the night before, not the morning of. The reason being that exfoliation stimulates the production of oil, which means shine. It can also change the color of your skin for a short time, giving it a warmer, pink tone.
  • And when you want heavier coverage (like for photo shoots), apply primers with a sponge, rather than a brush.

Urban Decay Eyelash Primer Potion

urban-decay-primer-potion-4

What it is:
A hydrating, protein-rich mascara base packed with silk protein (aka gossamer) and panthenol.

What it does:
Eyelash Primer Potion is like a POWERUP A mascara POWERUP! for mascara, boosting lash thickness and length. It also makes mascara more water- and smudge-resistant.

Urban Decay Fall 2009 Purple Cat Eye Face of the Day

August 12th, 2009 by Karen 108 Comments

urban-decay-fall-2009-fotd-karen2a

Earlier today I needed a little help getting over the hump day blues, so I pointed my browser in the direction of Urban Decay’s big friends and family sale.

From now through August 20, get 30% off online orders with coupon code FNFF1 at checkout.

I was looking at the online fall catalog when I felt a sudden urge to play.

This was my inspiration for the eyes…

…and then I tried a version of these nude lips here:

LOL, pardon the fan action. 🙂 I couldn’t resist.

I was actually sweating bullets in these pics because it was like hot soup in my apartment today.
