The Urban Decay Midnight Emergency Kit in Action and a Glitter Eyeshadow Application Tip

September 3rd, 2011 by Karen 11 Comments

There’s just something magical about glitter, ya know? Something that reminds me of Tim Burton movies and Danny Elfman songs. And Urban Decay knows it, too. Even though I was dog tired from the day, I had to try on a few of the eyeshadows from the new Urban Decay Midnight Emergency Kit last night because the glitter made me do it. In a way, I didn’t really have a choice.

That’s Midnight Rodeo in my crease, AC/DC on my lids, Midnight Cowboy along my lower lash lines and Lip Junkie Lipgloss in Midnight Cowboy on my lips.

Now, is the glitter in these eyeshadows the kind that gets all over the place? Well, yes. It most certainly is, so I think it helps if you approach these shadows with that in mind. Whenever I use glittery shadows like these, I more or less plan to get glitter on my cheeks, nose and chin. It’s inevitable. Just like you can’t fight city hall, you can’t fight glitter like this, but I think you can do a few things to get along with it better.

Most of the time I’ll start with an eye primer to help the shadows adhere to my lids (a lot of UD fans love their Primer Potion; I think NARS makes a really good one, too) and will do my eye makeup first, so I can clean up any fallout before I apply concealer, foundation, powder, blush and anything else.

My new favorite trick with glittery shadows, though, is one I gleaned from Wende Zomnir in the QR code video tutorials available through the new Book of Shadows Volume IV.

When working with super glittery eyeshadows, like Midnight Cowboy and Midnight Rodeo, Wende says she prefers to press them onto the lids with her fingers, rather than trying to do it with a brush.

I gave it a try last night, and I think it really did cut down on the amount of glitter fallout I probably would have seen had I used a brush.

Friday Night Fun with Urban Decay Holiday 2011 (Yup, Holiday)

September 2nd, 2011 by Karen 42 Comments

Hey, babe! Have you finished your Christmas shopping yet?

Okay, sorry… Not funny, but we do have some super new bits and bobs from Urban Decay to talk about, and some of these are actually part of UD’s upcoming holiday lineup.

Yup, you read that correctly: holiday (!). Pretty soon we really will be celebrating Christmas in July.

Just some pics for now while I track down official prices and availability. I’ll update this post when I find out more, but I couldn’t wait to show you pics and swatches.

The Nail Kit looks pretty fun, and I’m just about ready to try out the Midnight Emergency Palette. Gotta get gussied up for fro-yo. 🙂

Enjoy.

Urban Decay Book of Shadows Vol. IV: A Bit of Glam to Brighten a Bloated Day

August 31st, 2011 by Karen 50 Comments

I was up before the chickens this morning, thanks to 18 pounds of tabby cat making biscuits on my butt.

Don’t get me wrong — I usually like my early morning kitty massages (I find them kind of charming), but at 4 in the morning, a good two hours before my alarm was set to go off, today’s wasn’t exactly what I’d call a good time. 🙂

This is probably TMI, but I’m going there because we’re friends: I’ve been feeling decidedly un-glamourous this week, and not even makeup has been cheering me up.

Hard to believe, but it’s true.

I’ve just been so beyond bloated, fussy and tired that I felt like Thelma and Louise there for a minute this morning when I realized that my stretchy clothes weren’t fitting the way they did/should.

I almost lost it. It was intervention time — that, or I was headed off a cliff.

And then it beckoned me, like a beauty beacon of light from above — Urban Decay’s Book of Shadows Vol. IV — and I answered the call.

Dressing Up for Asparagus with Urban Decay Book of Shadows Vol. IV

August 27th, 2011 by Karen 33 Comments

Urban Decay Book of Shadows Volume 4 FOTD

If you saw a girl all dressed in black with a gunmetal grayish purple cat eye fondling the asparagus at Whole Foods in Novato last night, yup, that was me. 🙂

It’s been a long week, so last night I decided to reward myself with makeup for dessert. Before I left to hunt and gather at Whole Foods, I opened Urban Decay’s Book of Shadows Volume IV, scanned a few of the included QR codes with my phone and watched the corresponding tutorials.

One of the videos is for a dramatic purple-ish cat eye look (it’s actually called the “Purple Cat Eye”), and that’s the one I chose.

The Urban Decay Book of Shadows Vol. IV kit/palette comes with five very sci-fi QR codes, which work a little like bar codes. After installing a free iPhone app to read QR codes, I held the phone’s camera up to the code. The phone scanned it and then opened a link to the video. Each tutorial features Urban Decay’s Executive Creative Director Wende Zomnir and a model, on whom Wende completes the look while describing each step in the process, including which products and brushes to use.

The look is a sultry twist on a classic cat eye using products from the palette — perfect for an evening out, or for any time you’re in the mood for something a little naughtier than a simple smokey eye. It involves makeup for eyes and lips, but the cheeks are bare.

Unfortunately, these pics don’t convey one of the coolest, most unusual things about the cat eye part of the look — how the colors subtly flash from gray to purple and back. I think it looks more gray than purple in these pictures than it does in real life.

Urban Decay Book of Shadows Vol. IV Starts to Crystallize in the First Video Tutorial

August 19th, 2011 by Karen 31 Comments

urban decay book of shadows volume IV

Today I started reading the new Urban Decay Book of Shadows, Vol. IV ($64), and it’s quite the page turner so far. 🙂

Urban Decay’s latest tale stars 16 eyeshadows (10 of them new) and a host of other interesting characters, like Supercurl (Full name: Supercurl Curling Mascara) and Potion (Full name: Eyeshadow Primer Potion).

I’m a sucker for science fiction, and when it’s good like this, I feel compelled to cosplay! — in a manner of speaking. I based my makeup this afternoon on the first of five tutorials in the story, the lovely “Crystallized.”

The book/palette comes with five special QR codes, which work a little like bar codes. After installing a free iPhone app to read QR codes, I held the phone’s camera up to the code. The phone scanned it and then opened a link to the video.

Cool…

Each of the tutorials features Urban Decay’s Executive Creative Director Wende Zomnir and a model, on whom Wende completes the look while describing each step in the process, including which products and brushes to use.

In Urban Decay Book of Shadows Vol. IV, Technology Meets Makeup

August 17th, 2011 by Karen 61 Comments

Urban Decay Book of Shadows IV

The gorgeous gadgeteers at Urban Decay headquarters know that technology plus makeup equals fun, so they engineered a little something special for us with their latest limited edition Book of Shadows: Volume IV ($64).

This installment in the storied line comes with plenty of makeup, as well as five QR (Quick Response) codes that you can plug into your iPhone or Android phone to access five online video tutorials featuring products from the palette.

The Urban Decay Book of Shadows Vol. IV ($64) comes with…

  • 16 eyeshadows (10 new and exclusive to the palette)
  • One full-size 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Perversion
  • One travel-size Supercurl Curling Mascara
  • One travel-size Eyeshadow Primer Potion
  • One small external speaker that can be used in place of your phone’s internal speaker
  • Card with the five QR codes and instructions on how to use them to access the five tutorial vids from your smartphone (I watched part of the “Naked” one featuring the palette’s neutral shades)
  • Cables to connect the small speaker to your phone by its headphone jack

The palette’s a holiday release, so it won’t be available for a while (I’m trying to pin down the exact date), but here are a few pictures and swatches to wet your whistle.
