Milani Bare It All and My Friday Night Pedicure

Aloha nui loa (new ee low ah), ladies. pink hibiscus

Translation: Very much love.

My in-laws left to return to Hawaii early this morning, and Tabs, El Hub and I were so sad to see them go.

I can’t lie, though… I’m exhausted. After two exciting weeks filled with good conversation, I’m looking forward to just quietly going to bed early (after watching the latest Project Runway while I paint my nails, of course).

What were your Friday plans? Did you live la vida loca tonight?

After the past two weeks, I need a little break from excitement, so I think I’ll paint my nails with something subtle, like one of these colors from Milani’s limited edition Bare It All collection ($4.50 each).

I think the six polishes, which come in shades of pink, peach, taupe and gray, really suit my current mood. Since I have some nail swatching to do tomorrow, I’m only going to paint my toes tonight, and I could use your help choosing a color.

Which one’s your favorite?

I Like NARS Pure Matte Lipstick, as a Matte-er of Fact

August 27th, 2010 by Karen 47 Comments

nars pure matte review

You know what they say, right? You can take the girl out of the ’90s, but you can’t take the ’90s out of the girl.

Well, I’ve never actually heard that before…but wouldn’t it make an awesome fortune cookie?

Back in the day matte lipstick was my BFF, and I always had at least one in my little black backpack (gawd, remember those?). I loved the look, but dangnabbit those old school matte formulas made my lips dry and flaky!

After all these years, I still love matte lips, and now with uber-moisturizing formulas like the one in new NARS Pure Matte Lipstick ($25), matte lips can be comfy, too (think spaghetti strap dress/baby-T combo, circa 1995).

Available in six shades with spectacular geographic names — Volga (a deep aubergine), Bangkok (a soft rose), Tonkin (a plum), Tere De Feue (a blackish cherry), Tashkent (a nude beige) and Vesuvio (a bold red) — the unscented, unflavored line conditions lips with hydrating vitamin E, wild mango butter and acai oil.

All four of the ones I’ve kissed so far feel smooth and soft on my lips. The texture’s considerably thicker than the similarly packaged MAC Mattenes (which I happen to like a lot), but isn’t as slick/slippery.

Lipstick Tips from Francois Nars

  • For a modern matte look, choose a lip color close to your natural skin tone, or pair a darker lip color with simple face makeup
  • For full, hard-to-miss lips, go with an audacious color spruced up with a dab of gloss or shimmer applied in the middle
  • Use lip liner to fill the shape of your lips, but make sure you blend out any obvious edges
  • Avoid over-applying your lipstick; the more you wearing, the heavier it looks (and, interestingly, the quicker it wears off)

Could EZface Kiosks Change the Face of Drugstore Beauty?

August 27th, 2010 by Karen 46 Comments

EZFace

Whenever I come across a new drugstore makeup morsel, I follow a familiar routine.

With the prospective product in hand, I’ll track down a reflective surface in the store (like the edge of a nearby shelf), and hold the item up to my face to gauge how the color might look on my skin.

Admittedly, it’s a rather unscientific approach…

Since most drugstores don’t provide open testers for products, beauty shoppers are often left to guess based on how products appear through their unopened packages.

But the times, beauty lovers, are a-changin’! Drugstore retailers like Wal-Mart have begun testing new technology that could help.

The new EZface Inc. “virtual mirror” lets ladies (and gents) see how beauty products might look on their skin without actually having to try them on (kinda like Daily Makeover’s Makeover Studio in a box).

Wild Cats Couldn’t Keep Me Away from MAC Fabulous Felines

August 26th, 2010 by Karen 66 Comments

mac fabulous felines swatches tabs top

Tabs couldn’t sleep at all last night and woke me up at 3 this morning like a kid on Christmas Christmas came early! morning. MAC Fabulous Felines pounced onto counters nationwide today (and international counters next month), and he wanted to make sure we made it to the mall.

We did. 🙂

Of the collection’s three color stories, Leopard Luxe was the one we’ve both been looking forward to the most (lots of warm corals and golds)…not that Burmese Beauty and Palace Pedigreed don’t also look interesting.

Despite its name, the collection isn’t just for fellow feline enthusiasts. If warm golds and corals sing on your skin/fur, get your paws on Leopard Luxe; if cool plums, pinks and blues crook your tail, consider Palace Pedigreed; and if you prefer to party with a mixed crowd, try Burmese Beauty’s blend of greens, taupes and browns.

I’d like to hear what you have to think. Take a look at these swatches, and hit me up in the comments.

MAC Fabulous Felines Leopard Luxe Eyeshadow Quad

August 26th, 2010 by Karen 4 Comments

MAC Fabulous Felines Leopard Luxe Eye Shadow X 4 quad, $36.

Can’t get enough of Fabulous Felines? Peep this Q&A with Jennifer Balbier, senior vice president of product development for MAC.

Your mission is to develop a color collection that revolves around cats! Where does one begin?

For me it was really easy. I’ve had two cats for 16 years — Miss Charlie Girl and Shakespeare. In fact, I tried to get Shakespeare a modeling job as part of this campaign because he’s this gorgeous white thing but, unfortunately, it wasn’t the look we were going for! So it was natural from my point of view.

We started by looking at cats as a whole. They’re mysterious, quite unpredictable and, in addition to their characteristics, their coats are quite beautiful. A lot of times I look at Miss Charlie Girl because she’s a beautiful shade of soft brown and I’d like to get her to come out from under the bed and take her to the colorist!

There are three distinct and rich color stories at play, with lots of attention to texture. How did that come about?

We looked at rich greys and plums and greyed-out greens reminiscent of cats’ eyes, and of course ombré and amber. The felines’ coloration and tonality were part of the inspiration. Texture-wise, we started by playing with the various colors of the hair for each of these types of cats, and developed different finishes between the products. As a result of the various finishes, when the color is layered, you can really create differences in terms of light and opacity. Cats are never just one shade, so we wanted to create an ombré effect, for example — an amber that burns into gray green.

While the collection is obviously cat-inspired, it’s also catwalk inspired: those two elements had to fall into place with each other. We work with the latest trend reports and saw all these fall colors and textures — smoky greys, plums and warm-toned ambers — and we had to make it all work together. Each cat had to have her own look, as if each cat were a different type of girl.

The new Superslick Liquid Eye Liner sounds really cool. What’s the story there, and what is its role in the collection as a whole?

The beauty of this product is the amazing formula and this magical new applicator. It is super precise — you can easily create a thin line or a thicker one. It’s very long-wearing (15-hour wear!), water-resistant and leaves an incredibly shiny finish. There are nine different shades — three colors per cat. The goal was to not only offer enough “playtime” with the product, but also have it set quickly, while keeping a super wet look in exceedingly jewel-toned color.

We always like to have a focus for each of our collections, and you can see from this lineup we tended to focus on the eyes. So we chose to include pigments that are complementary accent colors to the eye shadow quads — they mimic cat fur in their multi-dimensionality: It’s never one shade and can be softer and lighter and deeper in some parts.

Got a tip for creating the perfect cat eye?
Actually, that’s why the liner was developed! The way the tip is designed builds a cat eye by itself if you glide it over your lid and swoop the ends. It’s flexible, yet firm enough for precision glide and control. It can be difficult to do a cat eye with a pencil, but this pointed applicator tip makes it simple.

You’ve mentioned that you have cats yourself. As a cat lover, how do you feel this collection will resonate with other fabulous felines?
Everyone knows that cat people are crazy about their pets. There’s a feminine feline connection between people and their kitties that any cat owner will cop to! Cat lovers will be drawn to the collection. Feminine feline enthusiasts always have this one-on-one with their cats, where you look at them and maybe you talk to them and your cat totally understands you at that moment. Cats speak with their eyes and that’s what we captured with this collection. Fabulous felines are just like the girls they portray — sexy, seductive, fun, playful, young and luxurious!
