The Chanel Quadra Eye Shadow Quad in Regard Perle Will Shine a Light on Your Eyes

December 20th, 2010 by Karen 55 Comments

Every girl remembers her first…Chanel eyeshadow quad. 🙂

Mine was Garden Party. Ah, Garden Party… Just saying the name brings back memories (and a warm, fuzzy feeling) of the first time I laid eyes on that mix of green, peach and pink.

I still love that quad so much that it’s the first thing I thought of when I saw promo pics of the new Chanel Quadra Eye Shadow quad in Regard Perle ($56). I was kindasorta hoping Perle would look more like it in person.

It’s not a Garden Party dupe, but I think it’s very pretty in its own right, particularly if you have a thing for glowy skin.

Each of its four soft powder shadows shine with a mirror-like finish that lights up eyelids when when they’re applied. Chanel channeled pearls this season — or rather the way skin glows when you’re wearing pearls — and here they got it spot on. The chai latte I had last night right before dinner screwed with my sleep, and it was evident all over my face this morning. But a few swipes of Regard Perle today, and my eyes looked visibly brighter and more awake.

Ladies who kneel at the altar of the glitter gods may want to take a look at the shimmery grayish green and peach shades on the quad’s left. Both of them burst with the cutest flecks of silver micro glitter. Be prepared, though, to deal with serious fallout from both of them. They’re kinda powdery and don’t adhere to my skin as well as the other two colors in the quad, so that might be something to keep in mind.

The light beige and salmon pink on the right are the more pigmented of the four. Speaking of that, the beige in the lower right really surprised me. When the light hits it just right, I see subtle flashes of gold and green. The shimmery salmon pink in the upper right may not have the same wow factor as the beige, but I think it’s still a nice complement to the other three shadows.

Chanel Mat Lumiere Soft Matte Makeup with SPF 15 Helps Combo Skin Face the Day for $54

December 20th, 2010 by Karen 92 Comments

chanel mat lumiere soft honey

Who among us hasn’t crossed paths with her share of craptacular liquid foundations? — the runny ones that leave streaks, the heavy pore-suffocating ones, and, oh, how about the ones with the open-mouth bottle…like the one you accidentally spilled on your buddy’s white shag carpet back in school (so sorry, Shell!).

I know it’s asking for a lot, but I would love a great, preferably inexpensive medium-coverage liquid foundation that I can wear every day (something I can throw on before I run out for a chai latte). That said, it’s with great joy, and a little pain, that I type these words: Chanel’s $54 Mat Lumiere Long-Lasting Soft Matte Makeup SPF 15 just might be the best liquid foundation I’ve used in years.

But…it’s $54.

At the Chanel counter a couple weeks ago, while I was taking a look at the Rouge Allure Extrait de Glosses, a friendly makeup artist made me a sample jar of Mat Lumiere in Soft Honey and predicted that I’d “be ba-aaack!”

Guess what (she was right).

One of five liquid foundation formulas in Chanel’s permanent line, medium-coverage Mat Lumiere is available in 12 shades. It’s oil-free, designed for combination skin, and has been around for a while.

I treated my combination oily/dry skin to it for two weeks until the sample ran out. I couldn’t believe how natural the finish looked and how it felt as light as a feather on my skin.

Even though my heart stopped yesterday when I handed my credit card over to the sales associate, I still went through with it.

The texture? It’s so smooth that it’s almost like a gel. Blending away imperfections with it is a breeze, and it never leaves any weird patches or streaks behind.

As for the finish, it’s matte, but not so matte that it makes my skin look flat, artificial or severe (not mannequin-ish at all).

On top of everything else I like about it, it’s practically weightless, like I’m barely wearing any makeup at all.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Dec. 20

December 20th, 2010 by Karen 65 Comments

  • You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past three years, which I guess makes this somewhere around Vol. 150. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
  1. Mood:
  2. Feeling positively great because I’m finally done with Christmas shopping. All that’s left to do is wrap, which I can get done in the blink of an eye (I honed my skills as a gift wrap girl at Emporium-Capwell when I was a teenager).

  3. What’s your favorite winter comfort food?
  4. Soup. It’s warm, easy and filling. Lately split pea’s been my jam, with butternut squash a close second.

  5. One small thing that always makes you happy?
  6. When Tabs crawls onto my chest first thing in the morning, tucks his head beneath my chin and fires up his purr machine. I call it “The Tabby Alarm Clock.”

  7. Three beauty products that changed your life?
  8. Philosophy Purity Made Simple One-Step Facial Cleanser because it thoroughly takes everything off without stripping my skin; Clarins HydraQuench Cream because it moisturizes my hella dry face; and the Shu Uemura Lash Curler because it creates perfectly curled lashes without pinching.

  9. Khaki cargo pants: fashionable or faux pas?
  10. Hmm. I’m not crazy about how they look, but I’ll wear them when I’m traveling or covering an event. Having accessible extra pockets comes in REALLY handy.

  11. Favorite lip balm?
  12. MAC Naked Honey Skin Salve. I’m gonna cry some serious tears when I run out of the stuff!

  13. How do you sign off on your emails?
  14. I generally rotate between kind regards, best, warmly, take care and talk to you soon. Really close friends and family get the crazy sign offs — peace and chicken grease, word to Big Bird, haaay…

  15. Your purse: messy or organized?
  16. Depends on the purse. My big “photography purse” (a Kipling bag I’ve modified to store my camera equipment) and wristlet (where I keep keys, cards and all the important stuff) are immaculate. Everything else is another story, LOL!

  17. Today’s outfit?
  18. Right now I’m looking quite un-stylish, but festive, in a white pair of sweatpants, a red sweatshirt with a faux fur hood and a pair of beige knitted, knee-high boots.

  19. Weekly goals:
  20. Enjoy every minute of the run up to Christmas, spend at least 30 minutes every day on the treadmill (damn those macarons!) and be in bed by 10 every night.

Five more days till Christmas, merry makers! Will you be taking any time off this week? Since I work for Tabs full time, I’ll be lucky to get one day off, LOL! If you’re on break this week (or if things are slow at work), how about stopping by for a second to fill out the Monday poll? I’d love to hear from ya. 🙂

  • To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

1. Mood:
2. What’s your favorite winter comfort food?
3. One small thing that always makes you happy?
4. Three beauty products that changed your life?
5. Khaki cargo pants: fashionable or faux pas?
6. Favorite lip balm?
7. How do you sign off on your emails?
8. Your purse: messy or organized?
9. Today’s outfit?
10. Weekly goals:

Happy holidays!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Tabs for the Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Cat Collar

Okay, I have to get Tabs a new phone, because either he doesn’t know how to use his, or he’s deliberately ignoring me. He’s been on location in Paris for a few days doing his kitty modeling thing while I’ve been stuck here in Novato getting the place ready for Christmas. He was very specific before he left about how we wanted things prepared for his return. Two stockings hung by the tree, fresh catnip sprinkled around his cat tower, two scoops of Fancy Feast tuna in gravy heated to exactly 73 degrees in the microwave, a clean litter box, and a bowl of chilled Evian.

I need to find out when he’s coming back, but I’ve already sent him like 20 unanswered texts!

Who is Tabs the Cat? About three years ago I befriended a stray, flea-bitten tabby cat with a bad case of worms. I could see he’d fallen on hard times, but his profound knowledge of high fashion and department store cosmetics led me to believe that he was more than meets the eye. We became fast friends, and now he’s actually my boss (and a successful kitty model). 🙂

Here’s the latest from his portfolio…

Flower Power!

December 19th, 2010 by Karen 5 Comments

This flower in the biome at the California Academy of Sciences caught my eye on Friday.

Unfortunately I forgot to check the label so I don’t know the name. I’m tempted to say it’s an orchid, but I think it might be some sort of pitcher plant. Really, I have no clue.

Are there any botany enthusiasts in the house who happen to know?

Flutterby, Butterfly

Wouldn’t these colors make a pretty eyeshadow palette?
