When It Comes to Fragrances, Is Bigger Better?

June 16th, 2010 by Karen 42 Comments

Bigger fragrances?

Not bigger as in bolder scents, but bigger as in fragrance packaging. In 1981’s The Incredible Shrinking Woman, a mix of perfumes and other household products causes an ordinary suburban housewife to shrink down to just a few inches in size (whee!). Today, it’s the other way around, with perfume bottles shrinking on fragrance counters worldwide.

Increasingly for fragrances, it’s a small world, with smaller and smaller options like rollerballs, fragrance sticks and mini-bottles (1 oz. or less) for sale. The economy has something to do with it — smaller bottles generally cost less than bigger ones do and contain less product — but shrinking bottles don’t necessarily mean better values, at least not in terms of price per ounce.

A small (CUTE!) 1 oz. bottle of Gwen’s Harajuku Lovers fragrance, for instance, costs $45 at Sephora, but if you don’t go through fragrances very quickly, that may not be a bad deal. Of course, if the same scent came in a bottle the size of a Coke can (12 oz.), we’d be talking about a whopping $540 instead.

Are shrinking fragrance bottles a win-win for consumers and beauty companies alike?

“Smaller sizes are a great way for consumers to get a taste of what’s new or to remember a loved, favorite scent,” explains Karen Grant, Vice President and Global Industry Analyst at The NPD Group. “This could be not only a thoughtful option, but a budget-friendly one for gift giving.”

When it comes to fragrance packaging, is bigger always better?

I Look and Sea the Ocean: A Blue, Teal and Golden Eye

June 15th, 2010 by Karen 34 Comments

Written by Makeup Morsels

Today the makeup maven behind Makeup Morsels blog shares a bright and summery eye look inspired by the beach.

Hey, guys!

Lately I’ve been loving nautical themes, and I suspect it has to do with summer. My brain’s on a sunny beach somewhere far away, and its gentle waves have shooed away the stress of my exams.

Maybe that’s a dream that won’t be happening any time soon, but I can still pretend with makeup looks like this ocean-inspired eye of the day!

Here’s what I used to get the look:

  • Too Faced Shadow Insurance ($17)
  • Revlon Illuminance Crème Shadows in Not Just Nudes (about $7)
  • Victoria’s Secret Beauty Rush Wet/Dry Shadow in Blue-Ray ($7)
  • Covergirl Quad in Tropical Fusion (about $5)
  • Milani Liquif’Eye Eyeliner in Gold ($6)
  • The Body Shop Super Volume Mascara in Cobalt ($14)

First, I primed my lids with Too Faced Shadow Insurance to prevent creasing and fading. Then, using a finger, I patted the light matte shade in Revlon’s Not Just Nudes quad over my lids to creates a base to amplify the vibrance of the colors to follow.

Next, I covered the inner two thirds of my eyelid with Victoria’s Secret Eyeshadow in Blue-Ray.

NARS Pure Sheer SPF Lip Treatment for a Soft, Sheer Look

June 15th, 2010 by Karen 32 Comments

nars pure sheer spf lip treatment review

With summer approaching, it’s perfectly natural to love lips kissed with NARS Pure Sheer SPF Lip Treatment ($25). The new line of six sheer little lovelies delivers natural-looking color (for that coveted “nude” lip look), subtle shine and sun protection just in time for summer.

NARS didn’t just add SPF 15 to these and call it a day. They also made them hydrating by adding wild mango butter, Acai oil and Vitamin E.

I’ve been wearing Aurore, a light pink nude, practically nonstop for a few days because I love how creamy it feels on my lips. I’d also like to thank NARS for not loading it up with any funky flavors or scents. When I see a product for the first time, I usually make assumptions about how it might taste or smell, ya know? Don’t some products just look like they’re destined to have a fragrance? In this case, the moment I saw Aurore, I thought, “Please don’t smell like strawberries.” And it doesn’t, so yay! 🙂

NARS Multiple Tint: Invading a Makeup Dream Near You

June 15th, 2010 by Karen 54 Comments

nars multiple tint review

Last night I had a makeup dream, except that in this dream there was an ice cream truck, and instead of ice cream it sold the new NARS Multiple Tints ($38 each). 🙂

Okay, now here’s where it gets REALLY weird. Instead of applying the sheer, buildable tints to my cheeks and lips, I gobbled ’em up like they were sweet, creamy treats!

Available in three eye-popping shades — Beverly Hills (a bright red tint), Cadaques (a bright fuchsia tint) and Turks & Caicos (a bright orange tint) — these do look a lot like desserts, don’t they? Kinda like Push Up Pops, yum!

But don’t be fooled by their vibrant shades. Each adds just a whisper of highly wearable color.

I’ve been playing with Beverly Hills, the red shade, on my cheeks (NOTE: I also tried it on my lips but didn’t like the flavor…like an odd mix of concentrated Hawaiian Punch and Sour Patch Kids) this week, and, impressively, it lasts for a good 6-8 hours! — even without a primer.
