My makeup mantra this summer: all roads lead to surfer chicks and Las Vegas showgirls.
But there’s a problem with this — and you might not think it would be an issue, but it is! It’s hard to find beachy nude glosses that I can actually see on my lips.
They’re either so milky and opaque that I look like a third-tier backup dancer in a Nicki Minaj video, or so completely sheer that I look like I just gave up and used that crusty jar of Carmex that’s been sitting at the bottom of my bag since the mid-2000s.
I’m looking for that perfect blend of laid back beach babe, rhinestones, feather boas and glam, and I think I found it over at Bobbi Brown.

I have this workout playlist called “Power Boost” that I keep in my back pocket to get me through the last (usually painful) mile of my runs, when all I feel like doing is stopping, plopping down on the ground, and passing out in a puddle of sweat.
One of the songs on it is Jay-Z’s Empire State of Mind, and sometimes when I’m running on the treadmill at home I’ll sing the chorus — “New Yooooooork!” — at the top of my burning lungs, between panting and gasping for air.
Sometimes I also sing this…
I sing it with so much verve that someone who didn’t know me might even think I’m from New York.
Which wouldn’t be a problem for me. I’ve only been there once, but I mean, it’s New York. Once was enough to fall in love. We spent a few days sightseeing over Thanksgiving back in 2004, and it was so much fun. We got bagels and coffee and watched the Macy’s parade from the sidewalk by the park.
The Bay Area, though, has always had my heart…

My family lives here, and it’s where I grew up, so I’ll just have to be content admiring NYC from afar and getting my fixes in other ways, like with the new NARS Hearts New York City set ($75).

Complete with an Eye & Cheek Palette and a full-sized lip gloss and nail polish, the limited edition set pulses with top-selling NARS shades from New York.

You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
Which reminds me, he does thing thing where he rolls in his sleep like a log down a hill, and it’s always in the same clockwise direction. When he’s really fired up and just rolling and rolling, I up half the night whispering to him, “Sweetie, roll the other way. You’re rolling again. Go the other way.”
Haha! Otherwise, he’ll roll me right off the bed. 🙂
Wow, it has been a while. Gotta rectify that.
Ask me again in roughly 13 years.
Mmm… Cake. A moist and light, melt-in-your-mouth white layer cake with raspberry filling and butter cream frosting, and/or a pistachio ice cream cake from Baskin-Robbins.
Whoa! My tummy just rumbled…
To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.
Le List
1. Which side of the bed do you sleep on?
2. This summer, I hope to __________.
3. When was the last time you visited a museum?
4. Would you ever consider letting your hair go completely gray?
5. Have you ever lost your phone?
6. Do you like to listen to music in the car?
7. What kind of cake would you like for your birthday?
8. Top four places to eat in your town?
9. What are a couple of reasons you like to wear makeup?
10. If it’s T-Shirt Slogan Day, what does your t-shirt say?
Okay, gimme a big smile. 🙂
Are you smiling…? I hope so. It’s Monday, we’re in it together, and we’re going to have a great week!

The last pic in the Suspension series. I love how the leaf looks like it’s floating underneath the drops.

Comics! Your nephew has been trying to get in on the action lately. Literally. The comic book scene. But since he didn’t trust anyone to do his story justice, he decided to do it himself.
He sketched a storyboard directly into Photoshop this weekend, and then worked on the final draft from there. For the story, he drew from his own real life adventures, or so he said. 🙂
Hope you enjoyed it.
Who is Tabs the Cat? About five years ago I befriended a stray, flea-bitten tabby cat with a bad case of worms. I could see he’d fallen on hard times, but his profound knowledge of high fashion and department store cosmetics led me to believe that he was more than meets the eye. We became fast friends, and now he’s actually my boss (and a successful kitty model).
