Bobbi Brown

Take Your Look to the Next Level With 5 Makeup Tips From Bobbi Brown Manager of North American Artistry Marc Reagan

March 29th, 2013 by Karen 25 Comments

“As you can see, Karen’s not wearing any makeup at all…”

There I sat, feeling totally and completely naked and blinking wildly under the bright studio lights, as a layer of perspiration glistened on my forehead.

I’ve attended one-day makeup classes — sometimes called master classes — like this one before. Brand-sponsored classes usually held in large department stores. I really enjoyed the ones put on by MAC and Chanel, and yesterday’s, led by Bobbi Brown Manager of North American Artistry Marc Reagan, at the Saks Fifth Avenue in San Francisco, was just as interesting and fun.

It followed a similar set up. There’s a fee to attend, in this case $100 (my attendance fee was covered by the company), which is then redeemable toward the purchase of products at the end of the class.

Marc, a seasoned pro on Bobbi’s elite Beauty Team, has worked his magic on celebs and backstage at Fashion Weeks all over the world. At yesterday’s class, he demonstrated a bunch of different techniques and products on a model and answered questions while the attendees followed along, applying the techniques and trying the looks on themselves.

This time was a little different for me, though, um, because I was the model.

When I was asked, first thing I thought was, “FUN!” Second thing I thought was, “Oh, gawd! He’s going to have to take off all my makeup first! Holy sh*t!”

I’m the type of gal who applies concealer and gloss just to go get the mail outside, so I was a little nervous at first to be up there in front of the class without my “armor.”

But once I got used to it (as much as that’s possible), it was actually kind of liberating…akin to wearing a crazy cool shirt or something and just not giving a hoot.

The two-hour class was jam packed with tips. Marc did a two-phase makeup look on me, first walking the class through a natural, everyday look with the basics before cranking up the drama with more color, and between turning my head left and right at Marc’s direction, I typed a few notes on my phone.

1. Ramp up the wear time of your favorite Bobbi Brown foundations by layering them with one of Bobbi’s facial moisturizers

Ever notice that Bobbi’s line doesn’t include a face primer? It turns out, that’s because all of the brand’s facial moisturizers contain a primer in the formula.

So smart, right? Layering one of Bobbi’s facial moisturizers under your fave foundation not only helps to hydrate and protect your skin, but it also extends the wear time of the products you apply next.

2. Keep two brushes on standby to apply under-eye concealer

When applying under-eye concealer, Marc recommends first applying with a flat brush before using your ring finger to pat and blend in the edges. The flat brush places the concealer where you want it on your skin, as opposed to just pushing it around.

Then, to set your concealer and ensure that it lasts through the day, fully load a tapered fluffy brush with plenty of powder (don’t be shy!), and gently pat that on top.

3. Bring a Bobbi Brown Foundation Stick with you in your makeup bag

Does Marc have a go-to Bobbi Brown product? As a matter of fact, he does! Bobbi Brown’s Foundation Sticks, and he says, “every woman needs one in her makeup bag.”

With the sticks, which Marc says always look natural and never heavy or cakey, you can build them up for heavier coverage, or sheer them out wherever you need less. You can also wear them alone or set them with a powder, and if you want to touch-up during the day, the Foundation Sticks even layer well atop powder.

A Beauty Breakdown for the Aerin Beauty Casis Gloss Makeup Look: Radiant Skin, Gold Cat Eyes, Peach Cheeks and Pink Lips

February 27th, 2013 by Karen 49 Comments

A Full Breakdown of the Aerin Beauty Casis Gloss Look
A full breakdown of yesterday’s Aerin Beauty Casis Gloss review from start to finish

Thanks for the great feedback on yesterday’s Aerin Beauty Casis Gloss review, my friend. 🙂

There were quite a few requests in the comments for a full breakdown of the look, so here it is!

I always enjoy switching things up, so for this look, I used products I already had in my makeup bag, but in a slightly different way.

The tweaks? I wore a full-coverage foundation all over my face (not just on my chin, which is what I usually do), used two face primers (a trick I recently learned from a Sephora artist) and added some highlighting and contouring.

Before we jump in, let me just say how this was kind of a long process. There was a lot of layering, blending and buffing from start to finish. Wish I could say that I whipped this out in five minutes, but it took more like 45, LOL!

Not the quickest makeup look around, I know. If I were running to TJ’s to buy Buttermilk Pancake Mix, I probably wouldn’t go there, but for pics or maybe a party, I’d do it again, assuming I had time.

Okay, here we go — all of the makeup products in order, from start to finish.

  1. Caudalie Vinosource Moisturizing Sorbet (face)
  2. SK-II Skin Signature Eye Cream (lids and under-eye area)
  3. MAC Prep + Prime Natural Radiance Face Primer (forehead, cheeks, nose, chin and around my mouth)
  4. BECCA Rejuvenating Primer (forehead, cheeks, nose, chin and around my mouth)
  5. NARS Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base (lids)

Unsung Makeup Heroes: Bobbi Brown Jet Long-Wear Eye Pencil

February 12th, 2013 by Karen 18 Comments

Bobbi Brown Jet Long-Wear Eye Pencil
Bobbi Brown Jet Long-Wear Eye Pencil ($24), the most rocking black pencil liner to ever line yo’ lids!

I panic a little when I can’t find my stick of Bobbi Brown Jet.

Okay, a lot. I panic a lot. And based on the fact that Jet is almost always out of stock when I stop by a Bobbi counter, I’m probably not the only one.

Jet, a deep, true black long-wearing gel liner in pencil form, has a flat matte finish and sells for $24 as part of Bobbi’s permanent line.

That may sound like a lot for a basic black eye liner, but seriously — Jet is anything but basic. I think it’s easily the best black pencil liner available on any counter now.

The long-running Unsung Heroes series features some of my favorite permanent collection products from a variety of bodacious beauty brands. 🙂

Why do I like it so much?

Because it gets great, great mileage. Like a Prius times 12. We’re talkin’ crazy good wear time on my lash and water lines.

Over the years, I’ve worn (and stockpiled) dozens of black liners, and Jet is the only one that consistently lasts 16 or more hours for me (yes, some days are REALLY long) without getting patchy or breaking up throughout those infernal, eternal days. When it’s on, it’s on like Donkey Kong.

Whenever some cruel twist of fate/scheduling forces me to start my day well before dawn (when even the chickens are still snoring) I grab Jet.

Sometimes I’ll see some very minor smudging around hour 12 (!), but still — hour 12? That’s impressive.

And it’s super easy to apply. Jet’s silky, soft formula coasts along my lash and water lines like a private jet at 30,000 feet, and one swipe delivers a dark, dramatic black line.

For smudgier looks, I’ll buff out the edges before Jet sets, which usually takes around 3-4 minutes.

Where Jet doesn’t rock my boat is in super blended looks with powder eye shadows; for instance, when I use an eye pencil as a base for smokey eyes. In those cases, when I need maybe 10-15 minutes to manipulate my products, Jet simply sets too fast.

Bobbi Brown Sparkle Eye Shadow in Gold Star Gets Gold Stars for Elegant Glitter

January 18th, 2013 by Karen 17 Comments

Bobbi Brown Gold Star Sparkle Eye Shadow
Wearing Bobbi Brown Sparkle Eye Shadow in Gold Star ($28) from the new Brighten, Sparkle & Glow collection

Yes, Sparkle Eye Shadow in Gold Star, you get a gold star.

But not just any gold star…

We’re not talking about one of those little sticker stars you got for turning in that kick-@ss book report on Flowers in the Attic. No, we’re talking about a big, bold, glittery gold star, because this shadow’s all about glitter.

Camera shy glitter.

I couldn’t coax it out of its shell for these pics, but Bobbi Brown’s new limited edition $28 Sparkle Eye Shadow in Gold Star sparkles like a meteor shower in real life.

And it’s brightening, too.

Yup, brightening. It and a gang of other Sparkle Eyeshadows star in Bobbi’s new spring Brighten, Sparkle & Glow collection, which launched earlier this month (the collection with the funky mosaic-like pressed powders).

Gold Star is the only one that isn’t a re-promote in the release.

Part of me fears glittery eyeshadows…and yet given the choice between a glittery shadow and one with a matte finish, I’ll always choose the sparklier one.

I’m afraid of accidentally crossing that line between classy glitter, and walking into a gas station bathroom with bare feet, wearing short cut-offs three sizes too small for me and a trucker hat.

I like glitter, but I do not want to go there…

I want the kind of sparkle I can wear to the Met Ball or to a fancy after-party at the Cannes Film Festival, ya know? Elegant glitter. And I feel like fresh, elegant, refined Gold Star glitter gets me there.

Today, Crocheted Animal Hats, Glittery Butterfiles and Bobbi Brown’s New Spring Collections Stopped Me in My Tracks!

January 4th, 2013 by Karen 35 Comments

Novato never hustles and bustles like San Francisco does. It’s a sleepy village compared to the city.

In the city, everything moves so fast! Sometimes when I visit I feel like a fish fighting up stream, or like I’m a raft caught in a current, totally out of control.

And then, suddenly, something — sometimes it’s colorful crocheted animal hats — stops me in my tracks!

Other times, it’s a window display with sparkly butterflies that have glittery wings. 🙂

Today at Saks Fifth Avenue in the city, it was Bobbi Brown because — ohmigosh! — they have so many new things out for spring.

The Brighten, Sparkle & Glow Collection

Like the Brighten, Sparkle & Glow collection, with its mix of brand new and previously released products.

I’m particularly interested in these new Brightening Face Powders ($50 each), which come in all sorts of crazy colors! Like, one of them has pastels in it, with blue and yellow and green pans, and another one has purples and pinks and mauves.

My first thought? That these were eyeshadow palettes, but they’re actually products for your face.

Not Just Nude…Uber Nude

It’s funny to me that Bobbi Brown called this the “Uber Nude Lip & Eye Palette.” LOL!

Okay, so maybe I’m way too easily amused.
