My Latest Red Lip Love: Covergirl Outlast All-Day Lipcolor in Blushing Berry With LipPerfection Lip Liner in Passion

September 16th, 2014 by Karen 9 Comments

I’ve been jonesin’ for a new red lip look, and this new combo by Covergirl hits the spot.

First, I line and fill in my lips with neutral red LipPerfection Lip Liner in Passion ($6.74). Next, I add a layer of metallic reddish berry Outlast All-Day Lip Color in Beaming Berry ($9.99) directly on top. Then, for extra shine, I top it all off with the clear topcoat that comes with Outlast All-Day.

Feels very Christmassy, doesn’t it? I’m gonna keep this one in the mental makeup Rolodex for the holidays.

The Spice Must Flow…Through Covergirl Clean Glow Bronzer in Spices

September 11th, 2014 by Karen 19 Comments

Covergirl Clean Glow Bronzer in Spices

Covergirl Clean Glow Bronzer in Spices

Spices: for adding flava to your look.

OK, that was corny…

Like spicy corn salsa. 🙂

Covergirl’s Clean Glow Bronzer in Spices ($7.89) is a matte powder bronzer with a bit o’ kick to it. It may not pack enough heat for darker skin tones, but it’s got a little somethin’-somethin’.

Use the peachy brown, tan and dark taupe-brown separately, or mix them together to contour and warm up the skin.

I actually don’t use this as a bronzer, but rather as an improv matte eyeshadow palette.

Yup, that’s right. I think the medium and dark shades make fantastic crease colors, and the lightest shade does a bang-up job as a brow bone highlighter.

Gotta love those multi-taskers (especially when they cost less than $8).

If you’re interested in spicing up your life with Spices, you can find it now at drugstores, supermarkets and online.

If You Have Eyes for Copper, Plum and Burgundy Shades, Try Covergirl Queen Collection Eye Shadow Pot in Dazzle Q185

September 10th, 2014 by Karen 12 Comments

Dazzle Q185, meet the Dupe Alert 3000.

Dupe Alert 3000, meet Dazzle Q185.

I had high hopes that Covergirl Queen Collection Eye Shadow Pot in Dazzle Q185 ($4.49) would be a respectable, dramatically less expensive dupe for MAC Mulch, but according the Dupe Alert 3000, “BEEP! Subject is a little too coppery red. BEEP-BOOP! Match negative.”

Oh, well.

That doesn’t stop Dazzle Q185 from being a beautiful shade in its own right. It packs plenty o’ pigment and looks even more intense layered with a reddish copper cream shadow. I really dig it with Laura Mercier Burnished Copper or Chanel’s New Moon.

I think it also goes well with colors that contain plummy and burgundy tones, like MAC Sable, Twinks and Sketch.

So there, stupid Dupe Alert 3000. Take that. 🙂

The Look for Less: This $5 Covergirl Cheekers Blush Is Almost a Dupe for $28 Benefit Dallas Boxed Blush

September 9th, 2014 by Karen 11 Comments

Covergirl Cheekers Blush in Soft Sable

Covergirl Cheekers Blush in Soft Sable

Werble, werble, bleep-bleep, boop!

Werble, werble, bleep-bleep, boop!

Oh! That’s the beautiful sound of the Dupe Alert 3000, an advanced, cutting-edge alarm system I secretly acquired from Cyberdyne Systems this week.

Shh… Don’t tell anyone, but I keep it in my office right next to the cat treats, and it chimes whenever a drugstore product that could pass for a more expensive product is in its proximity.

Today it was Covergirl’s $5 Cheekers Blush in Soft Sable that set it off. Soft Sable is a peachy brown with shimmer that could easily stand in for Benefit’s $28 Boxed Blush in Dallas.

To the blush snobs, don’t knock it ’til you try it. Soft Sable buffs more easily than a bodybuilder and blends beautifully. When I wear it, I can usually go six or seven hours between touch-ups.

Plus, and this is my favorite part, it’s only $5.

Dispatch your personal robot assistant to the nearest drugstore or Ulta to find it. It’s also available online.

Werble, werble, bleep-bleep, boop! 🙂

7 Ways to Win a $100 Gift Card From Ulta Beauty and $29.97 in Products From the COVERGIRL Bombshell Collection! (Ends Monday, Jan. 13)

COVERGIRL Bombshell collection and Ulta gift card giveaway
Wearing products from the new COVERGIRL Bombshell Collection

You know how in every group of gal pals, each gal kinda has her own role? You’ve got the mother hen, the braniac, the tomboy, etc.

Me? I usually fall into the role of “the funny one,” or “the weirdo writer.”

I always thought it would’ve been fun to be the one all the boys flocked to, aka “the sexy one,” but alas, seduction was never my forte.

I seriously could not seduce my way out of a paper bag. (Remind me to tell you about the time I dove into the ocean without my glasses or contacts on and swam away from a cute guy…who ended up being El Hub.)

Even though I’m not a seductive siren by nature, I still think it’s fun to role-play, especially with makeup. It’s like stepping into someone else’s shoes for a while or playing a character for a day.

A few things from the new Covergirl Bombshell collection…

Characters like “The Bombshell.”

Enter COVERGIRL. This spring, COVERGIRL is channeling bombshell beauty with their vampy new Bombshell collection of cream shadows, liquid liners, mascaras, lipsticks and nail polishes in colors designed to tempt and seduce.

Which brings me to this…

You know what I’m about to say, right? 🙂

IT’S GIVEAWAY TIME!!

And mini-tutorial time, too. I’ve joined forces with Ulta Beauty and COVERGIRL this week to bring you a bodacious bombshell giveaway and a sneak-peak at a makeup tutorial I’ve been working on using products from the new Bombshell collection.

To go along with this, I’ll be posting a step-by-step coppery golden eye makeup tutorial to YouTube next week.

3 Out of 4 Mockingjays Recommend Rogue Red Glosstini Nail Polish From the Covergirl Hunger Games Collection

October 22nd, 2013 by Karen 8 Comments

Future revolutionaries, take note. Next time you start a rebellion, keep a bottle of Rogue Red Glosstini from the Covergirl Hunger Games collection close…because it just seems right to wear a glittery reddish gold polish on your claws/paws while you’re usurping authority.

That, and it’s only $3.79!

That’s a small price to pay for defiance. 🙂

I really like this one, even if it isn’t entirely unique (reminds me of Riveting from the China Glaze Capitol Colours collection).

It’s glittery, pigmented and smooth. Great, great and great.

I’m using two layers here, but I think I could have gotten away with just one.

Check your local drugstore for availability (this one seems a little hard to track down online).
