These L’Oreal Glossy Balms Are Ideal for Lazy Sunday Afternoons Filled With French Fries and Vanilla Shakes

Dear Karl Lagerfeld,

Look, I get it. I do. I totally understand why you feel so strongly about sweatpants. I feel the same way about wearing pajamas in public.

When I grew up, pajamas were strictly for use at home, and I still hold on to that belief. No one should have to see a grown man wearing red plaid pajamas on a Tuesday afternoon at the mall. I mean, really? You couldn’t spare 10 seconds to put on jeans? Please…

Sweatpants, however, I don’t know… I really love some of mine, and they’re not all bad, Karl. I have a killer pair by Zella that does great things for my bum. Makes me look like I spend all day doing squats with J. Lo and cutting carbs.

Plus, I wouldn’t know what else I’d wear with my L’Oreal Colour Riche Glossy Balms.

Come on, Karl, don’t act like you’re too good for the drugstore. *Snaps in a Z formation.* I’m telling you, I really think you’d like these balms. They have as much pigment as any of the other lippies in my makeup bag and an elegant, soft shine worthy of the House of Chanel.

I’m a Girl Without Curl When I Wear L’Oreal’s Miss Manga Mascara

September 3rd, 2014 by Karen 19 Comments

L'Oreal's Miss Manga Mascara
L’Oreal’s Miss Manga Mascara in 374 Blackest Black

Based on the cuteness factor of the packaging, at the very least, I expected L’Oreal’s Miss Manga Mascara ($7.99) to grant me lashes that Jem and the Holograms would envy.

The pink and black tube? The bendy brush? The very name itself? — Miss Manga Mascara?

It would have been silly of me to have expected anything other than cartoony doe-eyed drama.

See the joint on the wand just below the brush head? That’s where the wand flexes and bends (like one of those flexible straws)

L’Oreal’s latest mascara, Miss Manga is available now in three shades for $7.99 each. The one I’m wearing in the pics below is called 374 Blackest Black.

Now, this stuff is designed to create a very distinct lash look — thick, clumpy, kind of wet and glossy.

Not everyone’s cup of tea, and I can see why, as it’s a little costume-ish and not very natural.

L’Oreal Purple Priority Infallible 24HR Eye Shadow

February 28th, 2014 by Karen 20 Comments

I plan to make this purple a priority this weekend. 🙂

While stunning on its own, I bet this hybrid cream/powder eyeshadow, with its metallic finish, would look that much more amaze-balls under one of Urban Decay’s shimmery purples like Gravity, Flash or Asphyxia.

Can’t. Wait. To play!

Purple Priority, one of six shades in L’Oreal’s Butterfly collection, is available now at drugstores, Ulta stores and ulta.com.

Friends Let Friends Wear the New L’Oreal Colour Riche Extraordinaire Lip Colors

L’Oreal Colour Riche Extraordinaire Lip Colors, $9.99 each

The power of visualization…

Picture it — we’re at Ulta together standing in the L’Oreal area. We see a display for the new Colour Riche Extraordinaire Lip Colors, and we see that they’re only $10 each and come in 16 shades, which are more like glosses than anything else.

We start doing our makeup tag-team thing, persuading each other with things like, “Yeah, you should TOTALLY get that one,” and “Duuuuude, they’re just like MAC Cremesheen Glasses,” and “Oh-em-gee, only $10? What a steal!” And then we start dropping tubes in our baskets like lipgloss fiends on a bender, mwhahahaha!

But then, at the exact same moment, we both notice Blushing Harmony, a rosy pink that has “everyday purse gloss” written all over it, but — ruh-roh — there’s only one tube left.

I’d let you have it, of course. 🙂 Even though I’d be seriously tempted to keep it for myself. It’s a perfect my-lips-but-better shade.

An Easy 5-Minute Hairstyle To Try: The Textured, Braided Bun

February 3rd, 2014 by Karen 22 Comments

Got five minutes?

You know when your hair reaches that maddening length — that hellacious hair point of no return — when trying to wrangle it into place becomes about as easy as trying to ride a bucking bronco?

I’m at that point.

I probably should’ve gotten a haircut about a month ago, but eh. You know how it goes…

The side braid has been totally saving my butt lately. It’s cute and easy (and I feel like Katniss Everdeen when I rock it), but I still like to switch things up.

Enter the messy braided bun! 🙂 It’s just as easy and only takes five minutes.

I got the idea from L’Oreal Consulting Celebrity Hairstylist Mara Roszak, who works her hair magic on glam red carpet gals like Emma Stone, Olivia Wilde and Mila Kunis, in an online webinar. I asked Mara for an easy, trendy hairstyle I could do in five minutes, and she suggested a textured bun.

Importantly, it’s easy. Just start by putting your hair into a ponytail. Then, braid the pony (haha, I just wanted to write, “braid the pony”), and secure the ends with an elastic.

That’s the Unicorn Sliver Amethyst Necklace by Crystal Cactus…

Wavy Hair Don’t Care! (And a Couple of New Hair Products From L’Oreal)

January 31st, 2014 by Karen 17 Comments

After trying a couple of new products from L’Oreal and letting ye olde mop (also known as my naturally wavy hair) air dry, this was the result…

First thing I tried was the new L’Oreal Color Vibrancy Instant Shock Treatment ($7). L’Oreal calls it a “lightweight melting mask,” and it’s designed to add shine and moisture to color-treated hair.

It’s pretty neat.

It’s a conditioner, so you use it after shampoo. Here’s the kicker: when you work it through your hair, it doesn’t feel like it’s coating the strands, but instead like it’s melting right into them. Can’t say I’ve ever tried anything quite like it before… Really cool.

After I got out of the shower and towel dried my hair, I applied about four pumps of the new L’Oreal Curve It Curl Taming Creme ($5) to it. It added soft definition to my waves without leaving them crunchy or weighed down. I like how my hair looks with this stuff — slightly wild, but not too wild, LOL! Thumbs up.

Wavy hair don’t care! 🙂

Both products are available now at drugstores, Ulta and ulta.com.

As It Is With Holiday Decorations, When It Comes to Nails, It’s All About The Statement Piece: L’Oreal Nail Color in The Statement Piece

December 9th, 2013 by Karen 14 Comments

L'Oreal Nail Color in The Statement Piece

L'Oreal Nail Color in The Statement Piece

My nails and I are totes feeling the holiday spirit now.

That’s what happens when you spend the weekend watching yule log television and listening to Christmas music. 🙂

Candy canes and gingerbread cookies for everyone (including the cats)!

Feeling festive, I swapped the green Sally Hansen Dive In polish I had been wearing for golden glittery The Statement Piece ($6.99), one of nine shades in L’Oreal’s new limited edition Gold Dust Colour Riche collection of textured nail polishes.

L'Oreal Nail Color in The Statement Piece

It’s a gritty, glittery yellow gold with flecks of silver glitter swimming throughout — very shimmery and sparkly, and a fun shade to wear if you’re into the whole textured nail trend.

If Zoya’s Tomoko and OPI’s It’s Frosty Outside Liquid Sand (from the Mariah Carey holiday collection) got together and had a love child…it would look like The Statement Piece. Or to put it another way, picture Urban Decay’s Midnight Cowboy Glitter Eyeliner in nail polish form.

Thanks to the wide brush, painting with it goes quickly. Two swipes completely cover one nail, and I can even get away with a single coat (although, per usual, I’m wearing two for this swatch).

Two layers of The Statement Piece

I think textured polishes, especially ones with lots of glitter, are great for people who are tough on their nails. They wear extremely well and are generally pretty resistant to chipping.

That said, I can already tell that this one’s going to be a pain in the butt to remove.

Oh, well… I guess that’s the tradeoff for something this sturdy.

I haven’t been able to find The Statement Piece online, so you might want to keep an eye out for it at the drugstore. Oh, and while you’re there, would you mind picking up some Temptations Treats for Tabs? He’s running low… 🙂

Length for Days! The New L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara

November 25th, 2013 by Karen 17 Comments

L'Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara
Wearing the new L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara ($8.99) in Blackest Black

Tonight I find myself pondering imponderable things…

Like, does the flapping of a butterfly’s wings affect the sway of a husky tabby’s tum halfway around the world?

Or, if I were to wear L’oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara and bat my lashes at the guy making my hot cocoa at Starbucks (being generous with the whipped cream earns you good karma points!), does that alter the sway of tabby tums everywhere?

These are the profound profundities (not really) that passed through one cat lady’s mind as she wore the new L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara today ($8.99). 🙂

L'Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara
Pretty packaging

It’s all about the (asymmetrical) brush, man!

It’s pretty neat… It looks a little like a comb, doesn’t it? With the longer bristles on one side and shorter ones on the other?
