Tuesday Beauty Tips: Boosting Your Confidence

May 11th, 2010 by Karen 41 Comments

Tabs

Today cat blogger Tabs of Party With Tabs shares a few of his favorite tips to boost self-confidence.

What’s up, ladies? This morning I woke up to two things:

  1. The rumbling of my tummy for gravy (I still haven’t figured out how to open up those cans of Fancy Feast without opposable thumbs, damn), and
  2. …the sound of my executive assistant, Karen, blubbering into her pillow.

“Tabs,” she cried, “I have writer’s block the size of freakin’ China. I don’t want to disappoint people, but the honest-to-gawd truth is that I’m not feeling funny, happy or inspired. I feel about as great as a dirty litterbox…that should have been cleaned three days ago.”

Next thing I knew, homegirl was sobbing into my fur, basically ruining the blow-out I just got at the Blo Bar SF.

Having heard enough, I climbed onto her chest, stared deeply into her eyes and said, “Woman, you need to calm the eff down. Get a grip before you end up cutting off your ear Van Gogh-style. You see, I can’t have you doing that. I need your ears fully functional, so you can hear my cries for gravy.”

The Highlighting Power of Rosebud Salve

May 6th, 2010 by Karen 28 Comments

Written by Julianne

Today Julianne of The Family Julas shares an unconventional way to put a beauty cult classic to work.

We all know the famous Smith’s Rosebud Salve, the famed multi-purpose medicating machine in the pretty tin can. You can use it on your lips, on your skin, and on your diaper rash.  It’s always sold right by the cashiers at Sephora with all of the other beauty musts, like the Shu Uemura eyelash curler. It’s an American classic.

However, you may be underestimating the true power of your tin of Rosebud. While it’s pretty on the outside, and pretty on your lips (maybe not so much on your diaper rash…), it’s also a very pretty highlighter. While droves of makeup addicts have long been spending heaps of cash on Benefit’s High Beam or MAC’s Strobe Cream and other facial equivalents to blinding Christmas lights, the solution to your highlighting woes may be sitting in your purse.

What’s the Beauty Tool You Always Like to Have with You When You Travel?

April 3rd, 2010 by Karen 40 Comments

I never go anywhere without my MAC 266 (here’s an ancient review from YEARS ago; don’t laugh). It keeps me from venturing into The Land of Funky Brows. And then there’s my beloved Shu Uemura lash curler, but you probably know all about that, ha ha!

How about you? 🙂 What’s the beauty tool you never leave home without?

MBBTV #8: Tweezerman for Benefit & Crazy Lunch Lady Hairs

April 3rd, 2010 by Karen 14 Comments

How’s it going, girl? 🙂 What are you up to today, and are you doing anything for Easter this weekend?

Can’t say I have anything exciting on the agenda (other than hopefully watching Hot Tub Time Machine), but we are driving out to visit my parents in the East Bay tomorrow morning. I’m looking forward to seeing them and getting out of dodge for the day.

Anywho, here’s a video look at the Tweezerman for Benefit collection of tools for cute brows and lashes.

For more on the Tweezerman for Benefit collection…

NOTE: The pattern on the slanted tip tweezer in the video is supposed to be yellow and not orange or pink (something goofy happened to the color in that part of the clip).

MBBTV: Episode 1 – Using a Moisturizer Before Applying Makeup

March 7th, 2010 by Karen 57 Comments

Heya, ladies. Guess which blog just turned three years old. 🙂 Yup, that’s ancient in internet years! MBB’s officially a senior citizen.

Sorry about the hiatus from video, but I’m gonna do them more often now. Here’s a quick tip I learned from makeup artist Billy B, who explained that moisturizers are good for more than just moisturizing.

Tuesday Beauty Tips: Because Words Matter

March 2nd, 2010 by Karen 57 Comments

What do you say (to yourself)?

How would you describe your inner voice? Is she a supportive personal cheerleader, one who lifts you up with positive words of encouragement, or is she constantly criticizing your every move? If yours is the former, consider yourself blessed.

Some of us (I’m one of ’em) have slightly less supportive inner voices. Mine’s a perfectionist, and I appreciate her chiming in when I’m working on a big project with lots of details to manage; other times, though, she can be a real pain in the @ss, pointing out my faults and reminding me of everything I do wrong: “God, you’re so dumb,” or “That was the worst possible choice you could have made,” or “Why even bother? You’re never going to get your crap together.”

It comes down to a question

Tuesday Beauty Tips: Three Things You Can Do Today To Cultivate Your Inner Optimist

February 23rd, 2010 by Karen 43 Comments

I went through a serious doom-and-gloom phase in my mid-twenties, and pessimism, well, it was MY JAM.

I was unhappy with my job and living situation (roommate trubs!), and things on the boy front were full-on craptactular.

Basically, I felt stuck, as in not going anywhere. Worst of all, I couldn’t stop the negative record always playing in my head: “Everyone around you is doing well, Karen, and your life sucks in comparison.”

If this sounds familiar — if you’ve gone through phases in which you’ve felt like a perpetual pessimist whose glass was/is always half empty — you’re not alone. 🙂

It took time, but once I made the conscious effort to see things in a more positive light, slowly, things began to improve. Studies show that optimists tend to live longer, forge stronger relationships, and lead happier, healthier lives.

Is this glass half full or half empty?

Um… easier said than done, I know. So how do you join Team Optimism?

Signs You Could Be Grinding Your Teeth and What To Do about It

February 20th, 2010 by Karen 25 Comments

Teeth grinding, or bruxism, is no laughing matter. While it’s something most of us do from time to time and doesn’t usually become a health problem, a bad case can ruin a perfectly good smile.

The pressure we put on ourselves even while asleep can be such a pain, ladies. Jaw pain, chipped teeth, smashed molars, earaches, toothaches, headaches, accelerated tooth decay and tongue biting are some of the worst pains severe bruxism can cause.

Are you bruxing your teeth?

Mine started about a year ago. I’d wake up with a sore jaw and had no idea why. My dentist clued me in on my next visit, seeing telltale signs of tooth wear that revealed the culprit: I was grinding my teeth.

“Karen, how’s your stress level?” he asked.

Stress level? Well, I hadn’t won the lottery yet, and we were worried about the recession and El Hub potentially losing his job. “Not awesome,” I said.

According to the American Dental Association, experts aren’t sure what causes bruxism, but stress and anxiety are at the top of their list of suspects, along with allergies, sleep disorders, ear infections, an abnormal bite and crooked or missing teeth.

My dentist had a mouth guard made for me from a custom molding of my teeth, a rather expensive solution that cost a few hundred dollars out of pocket, but I didn’t want to wear my teeth down to stumps so I agreed. I wore it every night to bed, and before long my jaw soreness disappeared.

If you suspect you might be grinding your teeth at night (your SO might even be able to hear it), a visit to the dentist might be in order. If they tell you “You’re bruxing,” ask about less expensive options to custom-fitted nightguards like…

  • The Doctor’s NightGuard Classic Dental Protector – $17.99
  • DenTek Mouth Nightguard – $19.99
