You Can’t Spell Radiant Without Rad: A Flawless Finish Makes BECCA Radiant Skin Satin Finish Foundation One of the Best Foundations I’ve Tried

December 10th, 2012 by Karen 33 Comments

becca radiant skin foundation review
Wearing the new Becca Radiant Skin Satin Finish Foundation in Bamboo ($42 for a 1.3-ounce tube)

The Christmas lights are blinking, the neighborhood cats are slinking, and the Dark Choclate Stars are twinkling in their dish. The decorations have been hung by the makeup counter with care, in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.

And he will…but he has to stop by the Petco first to pose for pics with a long line of eager pets and their parents (more on that in a minute).

It’s that time of year! — although you’d never know it by looking at BECCA. The beachy Australian makeup brand always seems to have one foot in the sand.

becca radiant skin foundation product shot
Radiant Skin Satin Finish Foundation in Bamboo, the shade closest to my NC42 skin

Designed for normal, combination and oily skin types, BECCA’s new Radiant Skin Satin Finish Foundation ($42 and available in 18 shades) showcases the brand’s trademark endless summer vibe with an almost weightless formula and a dressed-down eggshell finish that practically tiptoes on the skin.

With coverage about halfway between a tinted moisturizer and a full-coverage foundation, it’s made for guys and gals who like flexibility. Going to the beach (maybe you live in the Southern Hemisphere)? Wear it sheer by rubbing in a few dots. Or for heavier coverage, work in a pea-sized dollop all over your face, and then pat and blend a little extra wherever you need it.

What makes Radiant so rad?

  • It handles combo skin like a champ! It’s easily one of the best foundations I’ve ever used on my combination skin. Not only does it take care of any slick, oily spots on my face, but it does so without drawing attention to any flakes and dry areas.
  • It goes the distance. Lasts the day and looks just as fresh at 8 p.m. as it does at 8 in the morning.
  • Looks like it’s been applied with an airbrush. You hear that airbrushed finish thing a lot, but I gotta say — I really do think my pores look smaller, and my fine lines look smoother, when I wear this stuff. It’s as close to a flawless finish I ever get, and yet I think skin still looks real with it on, not like it’s been plastered with product.
  • The extras. Did I mention that it’s moisturizing and water resistant? It contains Ejitsu Rose and vitamin E to help skin retain moisture, to improve elasticity and to protect against damage from free radicals. Yup, and it’s alcohol-, paraben- and fragrance-free.

BECCA’s Shiny, Lightweight Ultimate Colour Glosses Live Where Lipgloss and Hazelnuts Collide

December 7th, 2012 by Karen 22 Comments

becca ultimate colour gloss
Becca Ultimate Colour Glosses from top to bottom: Fallen Angel, Autumn Punch and Berry Twist ($24 each)

Oh, hello there, lips. What’s that you say? You’re tired of the same-o, same-o fruit punch/vanilla/brown sugar lipgloss flavors and cloying fruit scents?

Lucky for you, BECCA’s outrageously hydrating $24 Ultimate Colour Glosses are here to shake things up in a nutty, new delicious way.

One word: Nutella.

First, I should note that I’m currently ravenous, and my tummy’s rumbling like crazy. I don’t think there’s an official Nutella collaboration involved here, but I swear, my nose and tastebuds detect something very hazel-nutty when I wear these…

Love the nutty stuffBut like the memory of a dream early in the morning, it quickly fades, until it’s gone within a minute.

Depending on which side of the Nutella-covered fence you’re on, you may or may not think these are great.

Personally, I would have liked to see the flavor and scent last longer, but then again, I used to keep a spoon and a jar of Nutella in my purse for “emergencies.”

These shiny, non-sticky glosses are also pigmented, and they come in 10 shades, from soft nudes like Fallen Angel, to deep, juicy hues like Berry Twist, so there’s something here to satisfy almost every pout.

BECCA even added vitamin E and emollients to the formula (but left out the parabens) to lavish lips with moisture and shine…

I’m Dancing Like a Maniac Over Hot Pink BECCA Beach Tint in Lychee

December 7th, 2012 by Karen 26 Comments

becca lychee beach tint
Wearing Becca Beach Tint in Lychee ($25) on my cheeks and lips

Dear Universe,

If you could help me find that iTunes gift card I got for my birthday last June, that would be great, because I have this sudden, uncontrollable urge to don a black leotard and dance like a maniac, a maniac on the floor.

Why this sudden urge to dance like I’ve never danced before? I dunno (Flashdance). I have no idea (I watched Flashdance for the first time last night).

Life is a mystery, but I do know this: when I’m pointing and twirling in my leg warmers and the sweat’s streaming down my face, the makeup on my cheeks and lips will tough it out just fine.

You see, I’ve been wearing BECCA’s new hot pink Beach Tint in Lychee ($25) during our monsoon-like weather this week (over it!), and basically, it’s the ish.

I just shake the tube, and dot and blend a minuscule amount of this multitasking water-resistant cream on my lips and the apples of my cheeks with a finger. The resulting matte pink flush looks natural, but resists water unnaturally well, even when the rain is coming down sideways.

Special offer from BECCA: This Monday, December 10, BECCA’s offering “Unconditional Complimentary Shipping” on their US website. Free standard shipping on every order, any size, at beccacosmetics.com for one day only. No promo code required. Offer expires on Monday at 11:59 p.m. PST.

If you’re a complete blush klutz, creamy Lychee will make you look like an expert. My skin just laps it up (works on both bare skin and atop foundation), and it’s a cinch to buff out any edges.

I’m amazed by how evenly it applies.

An Everyday Plum, Beige and Peach Fall Makeup Look for Work, School or Walks With Your Cat

September 18th, 2012 by Karen 36 Comments

mac prunella sable tutorial final top

Shh… Do you hear that? Wait — let me open up my window so it’s easier to hear.

That rustling sound outside? That’s the sound of fallen leaves from the old oak tree blowing in the wind. Haven’t heard that sound in a long, long time…

It’s even a little chilly out today. I noticed it earlier when I took Tabs outside for his walk. That crunch-crunch-crunch of brown and yellow leaves under our feet, the crisp edge in the air — you know what’s up! Fall is back.

And as the seasons change, so does my makeup. I’ve been wanting to wear more fall-ish looks lately, like this little number with plum, beige and peach.

A few weeks ago I was all about dewy finishes and glow, but now I’m really interested in mattes, I think because they just seem polished and appropriate for this time of year.

From start to finish, assuming everything goes well and I don’t get distracted by, oh, say something like Friday Night Lights, this look normally takes me about 15-20 minutes. This time took a little longer because I wanted to snap these pics for a tutorial.

If you’re looking for a new fall makeup look for work or school, I hope you give this one a try, and if you do, let me know how it goes. 🙂

First, before we get started, let’s round up all of the tools and products we’ll need… Brand-wise, I mostly used products from MAC, Becca, Burberry and Hourglass here, but of course, you can swap out any of these things for similar colors from other brands.

Makeup

  • MAC Prep + Prime Natural Radiance: A face primer
  • MAC Face and Body Foundation in C5: A sheer-to-medium coverage liquid foundation
  • MAC Eyeshadow in Concrete: A taupe-brown eyeshadow to fill in your brows
  • MAC Paint in Sublime Nature: A beige cream eyeshadow with a satin finish
  • MAC Eye Kohl in Prunella: A shimmery plum eyeliner
  • MAC Eyeshadow in Sable: A bronzy golden plum eyeshadow with a shimmery finish
  • LORAC Pro Mascara: A black lash-lengthening and thickening mascara
  • MAC Select Moisturecover Concealer in NW25: An under-eye concealer
  • MAC Careblends Pressed Powder in Medium Dark: A pressed powder (used to set your foundation and reduce shine)
  • Becca Mineral Bronzer/Illuminator in Serrana: A warm matte bronzer on one side of the pan, and a neutral shimmery peach highlighter on the other
  • Becca Mineral Blush in Flowerchild: A shimmery golden peach blush
  • Burberry Lip Mist in Copper No. 02: A creamy copper lipstick

Tools

  • Hourglass Foundation/Blush Brush No. 2: A domed foundation brush
  • MAC 266 Small Angle Brush: An angled eye brush
  • Sonia Kashuk Lash Curler
  • MAC 239 Eye Shader Brush: An eyeshadow brush with a flat head and a rounded tip
  • MAC 217 Blending Brush: A fluffy eye brush with a domed head
  • MAC 224 Tapered Blending Brush: A tapered eye brush
  • MAC 129 Powder/Blush Brush: A domed face brush
  • Burberry Beauty No. 01 Angled Brush: An angled face brush

Next, using the Hourglass Foundation/Blush Brush No. 2, I prepped my skin with primer (I’m using MAC Prep + Prime Natural Radiance) before applying MAC Face and Body Foundation in C5 all over my face, and where I felt I needed extra coverage, like on my chin (dumb-@ss hormonal breakouts!), I applied a little more, pressing the product into my skin with the brush.

Then, I filled in my brows with a MAC 266 Small Angle Brush and MAC Eyeshadow in Concrete and curled my lashes with the always reliable Sonia Kashuk Lash Curler.

Next up — eyeshadow! I spread MAC Paint in Sublime Nature all over my lids with a finger. It served as a base for the next eyeshadows layered on top, helping them stay put and intensifying their colors.

Songbirds Sing, Gypsies Dance and Moonstones Shimmer on Becca Counters This Fall

August 23rd, 2012 by Karen 32 Comments

becca songbird mineral blush
Wearing Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Moonstone and Blush in Songbird

Why? Because it was the early 90s.

That’s what I say now when I think about some of the things I did back in my late teens and early 20s.

Matte makeup was all the rage, and I’d slip on my plaid, button-down shirt over a floral print dress and black leggings, blast my worn out Nevermind tape in the car on the way to school, slick MAC Paramount on my lips and attack the day!

My little makeup bag was filled with matte goodies, like eyeliner, eyeshadow and face powder (I hadn’t yet discovered blush), and almost all of it was in shades of brown, oy vey!

When makeup shelves and counters started twinkling with shimmery makeup later in the decade, it was a revelation! — like the first time I had a salad with blueberries in it from Panera Bread (so tasty!). Suddenly, the makeup universe opened up before me, revealing new looks and ideas I never knew existed.

Clockwise from the bottle on the left: Shimmering Skin Perfector in Moonstone ($41), Mineral Blush in Gypsy ($32) and Mineral Blush in Songbird ($32)

There’s just something about shimmery makeup that always puts a spring in my step. No doubt, I still lurves me my mattes, but sometimes I need the lift I get from shimmers, like when I feel like my skin looks a little blah, like when I have a cold or bad allergies, or when I’m just having a really rough day.

Sooner or later, though, there always comes a time when I have to get serious again, and out come the matte lipsticks.

This fall, Becca is introducing three new shimmery pieces built to add a little bounce to your step. 🙂

Shimmering Skin Perfector in Moonstone ($41)

This water-based pearly golden beige behaves as both a sheer liquid highlighter and a moisturizer, illuminating while moisturizing and diffusing uneven skin tone.

Becca also incorporated antioxidants, and broad-spectrum SPF 20+ to protect against 96% of UVA/UBD rays. Plus and plus.

But the shimmer is my favorite thing about it. The mica particles are almost imperceptibly fine, so the product doesn’t spotlight my pores as much as many other highlighters can.

Kinda pricey, but I love the results. When I layer it under NARS tinted moisturizer, I feel like I look 10 years younger! And so far it hasn’t broken me out (knock on wood).
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A-

Mineral Blush in Gypsy ($32)

I’m a sucker for Becca’s baffling Mineral Blushes. How can they be so easy to blend and yet so pigmented at the same time?? Awesome!

And I love their approach to shimmer. It’s never too obvious. Just right.

Gypsy, a delicate neutral pink with golden pearl, gives a soft, natural glow to cheeks. love

It may be a little too light for some darker damsels, but light-to-medium skin tones might just fall in love.
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A

Mineral Blush in Songbird ($32)

With a name like Songbird, it had to be great. 🙂 A new addition to Becca’s Mineral Blush line, Songbird is a warm, heavily pigmented peach pink with golden pearl, and seeing as how I love warm, peachy pink blushes, I was hoping Becca would hit this one out of the park…

They did!

Brighter and more intense than Gypsy, I think it still finds a way to look natural. Nothing clownish here, and if you crave even more color from Songbird, it’s also buildable.
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A+

Celebrating 10 Years of Makeup With the Multi-Use Becca Anniversary Palettes

April 19th, 2012 by Karen 16 Comments

becca anniversary palettes
Wearing the Becca Anniversary Palette in Vintage Jewel on my cheeks and lips

Oh, Starbucks Soy Chai Latte… You’ve powered me through countless first drafts. But sometimes you can be sooo demanding! Sorry, but isn’t it better to hear bad news from a friend?

It might not always be obvious, but when we meet at Starbucks in the mornings, I’m usually…asleep. Or very nearly. It’s often terribly early, but I look forward to our visits, and so I’ve made some time-saving adjustments to my regular makeup routine in order to make our appointments.

I know you’ve wondered about my cheeks…and how they can look so fresh and flushed, and how my lips can look so glossy, so early in the morning.

You see, I have a secret, and I’m about to share it with you (because that’s what BFFs do). The credit goes to Becca’s new Anniversary Palettes.

Becca recently released two $36 limited edition palettes to commemorate their 10-year anniversary (makeup-versary?), and they’re both really great for creating quick makeup looks without a lot fuss.

Both Dusty Rose and Vintage Jewel come with four cream products each (a Lip & Cheek Crème, a Crème Blush, a Lip Gloss and a Crème Highlighter) in a mix of new and old shades, which I usually use my fingers to apply (because I lack the coordination for brush work so soon after dawn). The palettes are about the size of a regular powder compact, and they come with what looks like a makeup Snuggie — a cute chocolate brown zippered pouch.

becca vintage jewel
Vintage Jewel includes 1) Lip & Cheek Crème in Snapdragon (a bright orange pink, new), 2) Crème Blush in Hyacinth (a bright watermelon pink, repromote), 3) Lip Gloss in Cosmopolitan (a deep berry shimmer, new) and 4) Crème Highlighter in Beechnut (a golden bronze, new)

One thing I admire about Becca is how well they seem to understand girls on the go, because the last thing I have time for when I’m rushing out the door at 6:30 in the morning is a smokey eye and a layered lip look with liner, lipstick and gloss. And maybe I don’t want to spend 15 or more minutes on my makeup. With the Anniversary Palettes, I can look refreshed and put-together in less than 5.

Say it’s the crack of dawn… I splash some water on my face, apply sunscreen, fill in my brows, swipe a little concealer under my eyes, and curl my lashes. Then, I grab one of the Becca Anniversary Palettes, blend a bit of Crème Blush and Crème Highlighter on my cheeks, and pat either the Lip & Cheek Crème or the Lip Gloss on my lips.

The blushes and highlighters last a good 6-8 hours on me, and the lip products, about 2 (I also have to reapply them after meals).

becca dusty rose anniversary palette
Dusty Rose includes 1) Lip & Cheek Crème in Tuberose (a coral pink, repromote), 2) Crème Blush in Turkish Rose (a rosy nude, repromote), 3) Lip Gloss in Cassini (a pink, new) and 4) Crème Highlighter in Narcissus (an opalescent peach, repromote)

Me Encanta la Becca Balearic Love Nail Colours

April 12th, 2012 by Karen 8 Comments

becca balearic love nail colour

Looks good on Saturday

Greetings from (now) sunny Novato! — home of the most intense hailstorm I’ve experienced in years.

No joke. Last night around 3 in the morning, I awoke to the most frightening sound! A roar of thunder that shook my world to its foundation (and must have terrified Tabs), and then a deafening tick-tack-tack sound from what I quickly realized was hail pelting the house.

It wasn’t raining when I went to bed last night, but the storm must have blown in from the ocean some time after midnight. El Hub said he was awake for a little while before the thunderous boom that jolted me awake, laying there with his eyes closed. He saw the flash of lightning through his closed eyelids, and then the counting, 1-2-3, before the big boom. Three miles from the heart of the storm.

SCARY!

Anywho, the weather looks pretty good now, both here and in the Balearic Islands (in case you were wondering). Partly cloudy and mid-sixties? I’ll take that, and to go with it, swatches of the three Nail Colours from the new Becca Balearic Love collection, $15 each. 🙂

The first thing I noticed about these polishes — I mean, after the colors — is how thick they are. Two coats deliver full coverage.

I really like the wide brush! It just sweeps over the nail, covering such a large area that I only need about three swipes per layer.

I’m still testing for wear time, but so far so good. Here are some swatches to whet your appetite.
