2-Minute Review: Getting to Know Chanel Purple Berry Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliner

July 5th, 2013 by Karen 15 Comments

Chanel Les Delices De Chanel Collection Stylo Yeux Waterproof in Purple Berry
Chanel Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Purple Berry ($30) from the Les Delices De Chanel collection

Got time for a 2-minute review?

Before you answer that, it’s Chanel. 🙂

WHAT IT IS: Chanel Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Purple Berry, a limited-edition twist-up purple pencil liner from the Les Delices De Chanel collection.

Chanel Les Delices De Chanel Collection Stylo Yeux Waterproof in Purple Berry
Stylo Yeux Waterproof in Purple Berry ($30)

WHAT IT DOES:

  • The texture’s on the hard side, but it’s actually relatively smooth for a hard pencil…if that makes any sense, and it doesn’t skip, which is great.
  • The pencil itself is very thin, which makes it easy to apply right at the roots of my lashes and water line.
  • This particular purple color doesn’t have heavy red undertones, which I like, because sometimes the reddish tones in purple liners give me zombie eyes.
  • The finish has a subtle, elegant sheen to it that reminds me a little of Becca’s Cabrera.
  • This thing’s like Michael Phelps in the water! It’s extremely waterproof, especially along lash lines. I wore it to the pool yesterday, and it didn’t flinch after 10 cannonballs. 🙂
  • For a deep purple color that lasts all day long, I apply 2-3 layers along my lash lines.
  • I know that for a lot of women the Chanel Stylos perform well along their water lines, but I haven’t been so lucky. For me they’re just okay. Along my water lines, I have to apply 4-5 layers to really see the color, and then it lasts about 5 hours, tops.
  • It’s isn’t really a smudgy kind of liner. It’s actually pretty tough to blend the edges.

Early Mornings, Late Nights and Crazy Cats Don’t Stand a Chance Against the Brightening Power of Chanel’s Convoitise Illusion D’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow

July 4th, 2013 by Karen 12 Comments

Chanel Convoitise
Wearing Chanel Convoitise Illusion D’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow ($36) on my eyes

Raising. The. Roof. Late ’90s style, for this shimmery pale golden cream, which I particularly enjoy on summer mornings when my cat wakes me up at 5 by using my boobs as his own personal obstacle course.

I think it’s the heat… It fires him up more than usual.

“Your body is a wonderland.” — Tabs the Cat

Chanel Convoitise Illusion D’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow… Now that’s a mouthful.

It has a soft, almost bouncy texture — less dense than a MAC Paint Pot, but more solid than a Cream Color from Tom Ford — and lasts about 8-9 hours for me. With the littlest flecks of golden glitter, the reflective finish is definitely shiny, but it stops short of full-on metallic.

The first time I tried it was after a rough night when it was so hot in my bedroom that I spent most of the evening trying to make the backs of my knees stop sweating through sheer force of will (didn’t work). I must’ve gotten three, or maybe four, hours of sleep, and I looked broken down and wasted the next morning.

When Your Eyes Could Use a Little Fairy Magic, Give Them the Chanel Délicatesse Ombres Fleuries Quadra Eye Shadow Palette

July 4th, 2013 by Karen 11 Comments

Chanel Delicatese Ombres Fleuries Quadra Eye Shadow
From the Land of Fey by way of Coco’s castle, the new $60 Chanel Délicatesse Ombres Fleuries Quadra Eye Shadow palette

Mermaids, elven archer girls and fairy princesses might not need the new Chanel Délicatesse Ombres Fleuries Quadra Eye Shadow palette because their immortal eyes already shimmer in sunlight, but mortal mavens looking for a luminous quad to fake their way into the Land of Fey could do a lot worse than this $60 quad.

The pink and plum shadows have an almost ethereal effect, like sunlight filtering through fairy wings, while the jade and mint green (yep, that white pan actually appears minty on my skin!) bring to mind images of water droplets glistening on a mermaid’s tail.

Chanel Les Delices de Chanel Ombres Fleuries Quadra Eye Shadow

Part of the limited edition Chanel Les Delices de Chanel collection, Ombres Délicatesse Fleuries Quadra Eye Shadow isn’t only about spritely eyes, soft spring-like colors and delicate shimmer. It’s also about the Benjamins, as in it costs $60!

Containing colors with medium coverage, it’s one of those quads where you can pile on the layers like sediments in the Grand Canyon and never look like you’re wearing too much makeup.

If you struggle with blending sometimes, this could be a good quad to consider, because even if you accidentally apply too much, you can just buff it out and be fine. It’s kind of magical that way.

That’s Right — I’m Singing About These New Treats From Chanel: The Chanel Les Delices de Chanel Aqualumieres in French Toffee and Friandise

July 3rd, 2013 by Karen 14 Comments

Chanel Friandise Aqualumiere
Limited edition Chanel Aqualumiere Gloss in 82 Friandise ($27) from the Les Delices de Chanel collection

Sung to the tune of the chorus in Katy Perry’s California Girls…

Aw-qua-lumieres
You’re unforgettable

When you left town
It broke my heart

Now that you’re back
Any-thing is possible

Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh!
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh!

I feel like singin’. Every time I wear the Chanel Aqualumieres in French Toffee and Friandise, I see the world in a slightly better light. For the briefest of moments, the world seems less cruel, and I no longer feel the urge to shake my fist at the sky and roar, “WHY!? WHY CAN’T EVERY GIRL EXPERIENCE THE WONDERS OF CANDY GLOW!?”

Now that these limited edition glosses, which had been part of the permanent line but subsequently disappeared for a while, have returned to the Chanel line via the Les Delices de Chanel collection, I have hope again. Hope that no more makeup hearts will fall broken and shattered on glittery sidewalks. Perhaps Chanel will even bring back more of the colors, either permanently or in future limited edition releases like this one.

Chanel Les Delices de Chanel Collection Aqualumieres in 83 French Toffee and 82 Friandise
Aqualumieres in 83 French Toffee (left) and 82 Friandise (right)

They’re just as wonderful as the ones I remember from Chanel’s permanent line. Mmm… They feel so good on my lips. Not sticky at all, and they’re bursting with moisture. They also have a barely there vanilla flavor and scent.

Gals who prefer long-wearing glosses might not like the limited two-hour wear time, but at least they feel great.

If you like the look of a nude lip but don’t want intense pink or peach tones, there’s shimmery sheer beige French Toffee, which should look really pretty with something like MAC Cork, or a golden brown nude lip pencil.

Chanel Cinema Le Vernis Nail Colour Is a Good Movie, But I Feel Like I’ve Seen It Before

June 14th, 2013 by Karen 7 Comments

Chanel Cinema Nail Polish
Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour in Cinema ($27), from the Avant-Premiere collection

Sure to be a blockbusterLike a predictable but enjoyable rom-com, with Chanel’s Cinema Le Vernis Nail Colour, you already know what you’re gonna get.

You’ve only seen the storyline done about a million times before, but still, you watch it anyway and relish every minute.

And after the ending credits roll by and you’ve brushed the stray popcorn from your lap (no judgement if you pluck a wayward kernel from your bra and eat it on the sly), you smile and say to yourself, “I really, really liked that.” 🙂

That’s how I feel about this creamy tomato red.

I’m Plum Crazy About Chanel’s Provocation Le Vernis Nail Colour

June 14th, 2013 by Karen 13 Comments

Chanel Provocation Swatch
Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour in Provocation ($27), from the Premiere-Avant collection

PlummyWhy so glum, sugar plum?

Is it because you woke up this morning, checked the weather forecast and realized that it was going to be 80 degrees today, and you’re more of an autumnal angel than a summer siren? Bummed because you couldn’t rightly wear your wool sweater, corduroy pants, scarf, knee-high boots and Chanel Provocation nail polish?

Not to worry! Fall will be back soon enough. If there’s one thing I’ve learned over six years of blogging it’s that time flies when you’re having fun. 🙂

I’ve also learned that when it comes to seasonal nail polish colors, wear whatever you like! — regardless of the season.

Chanel Provocation Nail Polish

That applies to Chanel’s dark creamy plum Provocation and your favorite swimsuit.

If you like ’em together, why the hell not? You could pair Provocation on your toes with coral fingertips for an unexpected summer surprise.

And so what if the beauty police cite you for wearing a fall color in summer? Just bat your lashes at the trooper and say, “I’m sorry, officer. I didn’t see a sign that said I couldn’t be bold.”

Truth be told, I wasn’t as impressed by Provocation as I was by Starlet or Paparazzzi the first time I saw it in a store.

Then I got it on my nails and, um, WOW! Deep and rich, yet with a hint of brightness that keeps it from looking flat, it’s nothing like those boring, blah plums I see on so many other shelves. Provocation looks downright inspiring.

I think I might love it as much as Starlet (and that’s a lot).

If You Like Red, Plum and Brown Nails, Swatch Out for Chanel Paparazzi Le Vernis Nail Colour

June 13th, 2013 by Karen 11 Comments

Chanel Paparazzi Nail Polish
Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour in Paparazzi, $27

The closest I’ve ever come to the end of a paparazzo’s lens was standing next to Tabs on the red carpet.

Second closest time was today, via Chanel’s $27 Paparazzi plum nail polish concoction.

That’s one way I definitely don’t envy Tabs — having to deal with the paparazzi so much — since they always seem to appear at the most inopportune moments.

With my luck, every pic they snapped would be of me yawning, sneezing or attempting to stealthily extract my underwear from my bum…

No thank you!

I like Chanel’s Paparazzi much better than the ones that chase Tabs.

Maybe not as much as I like Starlet, but that’s probably because of how close we are to summer, and Starlet’s coral just seems more ripe and ready for sandals and summer dresses to me (Calgon, take me to the beach!).

Just like how Starlet spreads out across each nail after it’s applied, Paparazzi does the same thing. Neither shade exhibits noticeable streaking.

One thing I do have to watch when I wear Paprazzi is my timing. You have to be in the right place at the right time with this polish.

Chanel’s New Leading Lady Is a Smooth Starlet: Take the Stage With Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour in Starlet This Summer

June 12th, 2013 by Karen 11 Comments

Chanel Starlet Nail Polish
Now playing on Chanel counters and online, the new $27 limited edition Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour in Starlet, from the Avant-Premiere collection

This leading lady is worthy of a summer tentpole film and a handful of Oscar nominations. Maybe even a sleeper hit that takes Sundance by storm, or a blockbuster rom-com opposite a foppish Brit boy with floppy hair and nice arms. 🙂

Chanel Starlet Le Vernis

This Starlet has some serious stage presence. Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour in Starlet has that certain something I like, that “it” factor that pushes it ahead of so many sweet and summery coral ingenues.

Admittedly, I rarely meet a coral I don’t love or like, and Starlet is no exception. But it differs from most coral shades in that it also leans pink, depending on the light, to showcase more of its rich pink salmon side in the shade and a cherry blossom pink in full sun. It also has subtle opalescent shimmer, which elevates its production value from indie film to Hollywood big budget.

Chanel Starlet Le Vernis

I was so excited to try Starlet the day I brought it home that I actually painted my toes with it in the middle of the night in almost pitch-black darkness before settling down to watch one of our generation’s most esteemed films, Step Brothers (“This is a house of learn-ed doctors”), and passing out on the couch.

Not really being able to see what I was doing because I didn’t want to turn on the lights, I expected to have to re-paint my toes the following morning.

Nope. Turns out I didn’t have to. To my surprise, my toes looked nearly perfect, because Starlet is smooove…

You could be painting your toes with one eye half open in the dark, and there’s a decent chance your pedi would turn out alright. 🙂

Chanel Starlet Swatch
Starlet, you are smooth! I only need two coats for full opacity.
