The Chanel Couleurs Culte De Chanel Nail Polishes Say, “Join Us… We Welcome You Warmly Into the Cult of Chanel.”

June 4th, 2013 by Karen 20 Comments

Couleurs Culte De Chanel
The five Le Vernis Nail Polishes in Couleurs Culte De Chanel, $27 each

I try to make the meetings when I can, but it’s hard. There’s always so much to do and so little time…

What meetings, you ask?

Oh, the meetings of the Chanel Couleurs Culte de Chanel (“Cult of Chanel Colors,” merci to those years of high school French) — not to be confused with the Cult of Chanel Quads, Cult of Chanel Fragrances, or Cult of Chanel Quilted Bags, to which I also belong.

I’ve often wondered aloud to my plus-size, Chanel-loving tabby cat/freeloading boarder, “Why don’t they [Chanel] just consolidate all of the many mini Chanel cults into a single mega one?” But he just stares back at me, purrs and blinks his big, dumb eyes.

God, I love that cat…

The agendas for Chanel Cult meetings are closely guarded, and I can’t reveal the topics we discuss or the secret handshake, but I am at liberty to say that we spend hours asking ourselves, “What would Karl do?”

(We also pet long-haired, fluffy white cats that resemble Choupette.)

Sometimes, we’ll put our hair up in ponytails and pull on pairs of black fingerless gloves. Then we’ll form a circle, hold hands and sway back and forth to Bizarre Love Triangle by New Order.

Of course, ongoing membership requires the wearing of Chanel nail polish. 🙂

These days, many of our members have been wearing one of the five new Chanel Couleurs Culte de Chanel shades ($27 each). The creative types among us will often mix and match shades, which there’s a policy against (but we’ll usually look the other way).

Chanel Couleurs Culte de Chanel is a precise, concise collection of five iconic Chanel nail shades that I feel accurately convey Coco’s aesthetic, but I can’t help but wonder — where the hell is Vamp??

Wait — Rouge Noir? Vamp? Are you guys twins?

Four of the five are permanent collection products, while the remaining one, Rouge Noir, is limited edition.

One coat seems to be enough for each of the darker colors — Pirate, Rouge Noir, Particuliere and Black Satin — as well as Beige, the lightest lacquer in the group, which looks cute to me, albeit very sheer, applied with one coat, or fully opaque with three.

Okay, enough talk. Hold onto your pearls, and let’s take a look…

Chanel Rouge Noir
Rouge Noir, two coats

Rouge Noir: A creamy blackened red the color of sangria or, um, dried blood (I think I watched one too many episodes of Law & Order: SVU last weekend).

Chanel Pirate
Pirate, two coats

Pirate: Don’t forget to wear this eye-catching, super classic cherry red on September 19 (Talk Like a Pirate Day), or the next time you sail the seven seas (whichever comes first).

I love this color, and I bet Captain Jack Sparrow would, too, as the red should contrast with his black liner nicely.

Saluting Summer With Six Splashy New Stick Shimmer Shadows: The Refreshingly Cool Chanel Stylo Eyeshadows

April 30th, 2013 by Karen 44 Comments

Chanel Stylo Eyeshadows in Moon River, Cool Gold, Pink Lagoon, Jade Shore, Blue Bay and Black Stream
The six new $34 limited edition Chanel Stylo Eyeshadows in Moon River, Cool Gold, Pink Lagoon, Jade Shore, Blue Bay and Black Stream

When an effortless, ethereal cream shadow collided with a twist-up stick to form Chanel’s first Stylo Eyeshadow, I wager it was like when Karl Lagerfeld met Choupette the cat — a match made in crazy cat lady (and dude!) heaven.

Then, when some intrepid soul at Chanel added shimmer and glitter, it was like waltzing into the ritziest, fanciest Petco ever and finding an entire aisle dedicated to diamond-encrusted cat collars.

Chanel Stylo Eyeshadows in Jade Shore, Cool Gold, Moon River, Black Stream and Pink Lagoon

In other words, pretty freakin’ neat.

Add to that a bad-@ss cooling effect, and things get even better — like a battalion of drag queens with purple feather boas parachuting down into that same Petco carrying bedazzled cans of Gravy Lovers Fancy Feast while Haddaway’s What Is Love (Baby Don’t Hurt Me) blares over the store’s speakers.

Like I said — pretty freakin’ neat!

For Zesty Lashes, Try Chanel Zest Inimitable Mascara, Which Just Might Be the Weirdest Mascara I Never Thought I’d Like

April 30th, 2013 by Karen 47 Comments

Chanel Zest Inimitable Mascara
A closeup of orange zest or $30 Chanel Zest Inimitable Mascara?

Oh, Chanel Zest Inimitable Mascara, you fabulous, adorable weirdo… Why on earth would anyone want to wear yellowish orange mascara, I mean, unless they had a coffee date with a handsome actor/spaceship captain at a comic book convention?

It’s just so…strange, and not at all what I imagine emerging from the sacred, hallowed halls of La Maison de Chanel, where I picture everyone wearing tweed jacket uniforms and strands of pearls, and stilettos click and clack down dystopian halls.

And yet here it is — Zest.

Chanel Zest Inimitable Mascara
Yes, it’s really *that* yellow

Waterproof, and designed for volume, length, curl and lash separation, Zest only looks like a blinking yellow streetlight. It’s actually one of four kooky, colorful limited edition Inimitable mascaras in the new L’Été Papillon de Chanel summer collection on counters now.

I look at Zest and think that someone in Chanel’s eye makeup department went bat sh*t cray! — but in the best possible way. Like, Karl locked up all the creatives in a room with some hella good vino and The Hunger Games looping on a big screen TV and wouldn’t let them out until they came up with something totally weird, crazy and cool that still captured the Chanel vibe.

Bold, Glossy and Bright, Chanel’s New Coral Nail Colour Dives Into Summer: Chanel Lilis Le Vernis Nail Colour

April 26th, 2013 by Karen 12 Comments

Chanel Lilis Nail Polish Swatch
The new Chanel Lilis Le Vernis Nail Colour ($27)

As far as I’m concerned, any factoid or tidbit of information can also be used to justify spending time with Chanel’s new coral, Lilis Le Vernis Nail Colour.

  • Had the most insane week ever? (Yup, my kitty boss is cray!) Let’s unwind with Chanel.
  • Did you floss your teeth this morning? (Sure did.) Now let’s brush our nails with Chanel.
  • Did you successfully resist the urge to wear Pajama Jeans to Trader Joe’s? (So far.) Cool! Let’s stay home and paint our nails with Chanel.

Chanel L'Été Papillon de Chanel collection for summer 2013: Lilis Nail Polish

It might not sparkle like its shimmery summer sisters, Azuré and Bel-Argus, but it still commands attention in its own way.

Non-streaky with a mirror-like shine, this creamy reddish coral practically leaps off the screen.

Chanel L'Été Papillon de Chanel collection for summer 2013: Lilis Nail Polish

I’ve been wearing it on my fingers this week with Azuré on my toes, and even though they aren’t colors I’d normally think to wear together, I like the way they complement each other.

You’ve got creamy coral Lilis on the one hand — ladylike and vintage — and techno teal Azuré on the other, and through some offbeat twist of fate, I think the combo just works.

Mr. T Says, “I Pity the Fool Who Overlooks Chanel Bel-Argus Le Vernis Nail Lacquer!”

April 25th, 2013 by Karen 20 Comments

Chanel Bel-Argus Nail Polish
Chanel Bel-Argus Le Vernis Nail Colour, $27

I’m starting to believe that Chanel creates nail polishes for nefarious purposes…like distracting me while toy poodles are trapped in my garage (more on this shortly).

I’ve just been sitting here for the past 10 minutes losing myself in the shimmery blue Bel-Argus on my nails…

Can you blame me? It’s enchanting… Much like Chanel’s other summer stunner, Azuré.

Iridescent Like a Butterfly’s Flitting Wings, Chanel Azuré Nail Polish Conjures Butterfly Beauty in a Bottle

April 25th, 2013 by Karen 34 Comments

Chanel Azure Nail Polish Swatch
Two coats of Chanel Azuré Nail Polish, $27

Growing up, I always had an overactive imagination. Sometimes, it was great, because all I needed were two branches and an empty flowerpot to entertain myself for hours (I’d pretend I was hosting a cooking show).

But sometimes, it wasn’t great, like when one of my aunties visited from the Philippines and stayed with us for a month in the spring when I was in second grade.

butterfly-chanel-120For some reason, it was a good year for butterflies. There were way more of them than usual, and my auntie, who had a fondness for what my family refers to as “Filipino old wives’ tales,” (here’s one: “Don’t fall asleep with wet hair, or you’ll wake up blind.”) said that the butterflies were the spirits of dearly departed relatives coming to say hello.

Um…

Of course, instead of taking that as a quaint, poignant fairy tale, I kept thinking, “WOW! There are SO MANY dead people flying around my front yard,” and I assumed that it was only a matter of time before one of them, or perhaps a swarming mass, would open an otherworldly gateway in the yard, like from Poltergeist and Salem’s Lot.

I spent that entire spring running away from butterflies…

Butterflies play an inspiring part in Chanel’s new L’Été Papillon de Chanel summer collection, and it shows in the $27 Azuré Le Vernis Nail Coulour.

Chanel Azure Nail Polish

The first time I saw it, I gasped! — but not in fear. In sheer delight! The conjurers at Chanel captured the beauty of butterfly wings in a bottle.

Sometimes, depending on the light, it’s difficult to describe Azuré’s color (just like a butterfly’s wings).

Gold and Copper Lids Cozy Up to Chanel’s New Le Volume De Chanel Mascara in Prune

April 19th, 2013 by Karen 18 Comments

Chanel Le Volume de Chanel Prune Mascara
Chanel Le Volume de Chanel Prune Mascara

I love summer makeup. Love it, love it, LOVE IT!

Dewy, bronzed skin; lids luxuriating with shimmery golds and other precious metals; slick, shiny corals on my lips…

I feel like Meg Ryan in that scene from When Harry Met Sally — “I’ll have what she’s having” — except that I’m, um, totally not faking it.

I really, really love summer makeup. 🙂

The beauty brands are laying down their beach towels on the warm, sandy beaches of Makeup Land right now with their summer makeup collections…

I recently added some new Chanel to my summer collection sandcastle, and I’m loving it so far. It’s Chanel’s new $30 Le Volume de Chanel Mascara in Prune, a do-it-all mascara in a blackish burgundy shade that lengthens, thickens and separates.

Basically, the whole shebang, and no flaking or smudging.

A Righteous Rhapsody in Blue: Chanel’s New Bleu Le Volume De Chanel Mascara

April 17th, 2013 by Karen 34 Comments

Chanel Bleu Le Volume De Chanel Mascara
I’ve got the blues… The Chanel Bleu Le Volume De Chanel Mascara blues…

Blue mascaras usually give me the blues…

Buuuuut, not in the good way.

You know how many times I’ve started out marveling at an intense sapphire on a mascara wand only to get it on my lashes and think, “Um…is that it? It’s not even blue. And where’s the length and thickness?”

Now, Chanel’s new Bleu Le Volume De Chanel Mascara is having none of that. This $30 delphinium is blue perfection in tube, and I think it’s a worthy addition to your fashion-forward wardrobe this spring.

Chanel Bleu Le Volume De Chanel Mascara wand
Just look at that magic wand…

It looks lovely standing next to the original Le Volume De Chanel, also known as “The Best Darned High-End Mascara This Side of the Rockies!” Also known as “lash crack!”

A great option for when you feel like mixing things up a little, or just want to wear a conversation starter…like a flashy cocktail ring or that tattoo of “Mrs. Christian Bale” across my left boob.

Ha. Kidding (or was I?).

Like the original Le Volume, Bleu does it all — lengthening, separating, thickening and holding a curl. It even makes it through the entire day without leaving behind a trail of flakes or smudges on my lower lash lines.

But even more important than all that, I can see the blue!

Two coats of Chanel Bleu Le Volume De Chanel Mascara

Those crazy cats at Chanel sure know how to do sophisticated blues. They’re always rolling out elegant, colorful blue eye makeup that works.

Sexy alien blue lashes, these are not. If you’re shopping for blue lashes that are visible from five galaxies away, you may have to keep searching…

Two coats of Bleu on the left, and naked lashes on the right

Say you’re out on a date with your companion about an arm’s length away. They’ll just see quick flashes of blue as you answer, “How was your day?” or, “How did you refrain from shanking your boss?”
