ALL THE FEELS! The Purple and Pink Urban Decay Vice Liquid Lipsticks, and the Crazy Emotional Ride I Went on Yesterday

January 26th, 2017 by Karen 20 Comments

PURPLE POWER! (Wearing Urban Decay Vice Liquid Lipstick in ZZ)

If I’d known what I was getting into yesterday before taking Connor to her first official outing involving a large group of babies, I would have done some deep breathing exercises or yoga beforehand.

We went to our first Kindermusik class, which is like a loosely organized music circle for babies. There’s a guitar-playing teacher who leads the troupe through songs and dances and baby sign language lessons and, basically, I lived a lifetime of emotions in the 40 minutes we were there. I got all the feels! Girl, I was a mess.

Kindermusik

What does this have to do with these new Urban Decay Vice Liquid Lipsticks? Well, I’m wearing them in this episodic representation of the emotional roller coaster ride I went on in Kindermusik class, LOL!

The Urban Decay Vice Liquid Lipsticks are a new line of lippies from UD. They’re $18 each, and these are the purple and pink shades. (I reviewed the orange and red shades and the nude and brown shades last week.)

These last about four hours on my lips, which is consistent with the other bright shades I’ve tried and OK for a liquid lipstick…although not exceptional. I was hoping they’d last longer, but I do have to say that they feel FABULOUS! The formula isn’t drying at all — another plus for a liquid lipstick — and I think they look great.

They’re available now online and at UD stores and counters.

The first emotion: nervousness, as told by Urban Decay Vice Liquid Lipstick in Twitch

I was a little nervous when we walked into the class because, ya know, it was the first time Connor had hung out with a large group of babies. Was she going to scream? Was she going to be quiet and coy? Would she be outgoing? Would the other babies be nice to her? Would she try to meow to everyone like she does to Tabs? I didn’t know!

Turns out she was fine. She was super cautious and reserved when we first sat down, but maybe she was picking up on my energy.

The second emotion: pure joy, as told by Urban Decay Vice Liquid Lipstick in ZZ

As the music started and everyone began singing and clapping and dancing together, she started to really enjoy herself. She was laughing, smiling and VERY interested in the teacher’s guitar.

The third emotion: togetherness, as told by Urban Decay Vice Liquid Lipstick in Firebird

Put to the Test: Sweat Cosmetics Mineral Foundation SPF 30 and Glow Hard Bronzer

January 26th, 2017 by Karen 8 Comments

Hitting the gym with Sweat Cosmetics Mineral Foundation SPF 30 ($42) and Glow Hard Bronzer ($42)

Entrepreneurial women of the world, will somebody please make my dream come true and start a line of women-owned-and-operated gyms with flattering overhead lighting, because I’m tired… I’m tired of looking at myself in the mirror in my HIIT class and seeing Gollum looking back at me lifting weights and doing lunges.

Until that day comes, there’s always Sweat Cosmetics.

sweat cosmetics k mat
Halfway through class and sweating like a mofo…

“Our goal at Sweat Cosmetics is to develop a line of cosmetics that contain SPF for the modern woman who strives to be physically fit while also embracing a healthy, active lifestyle. We are committed to narrowing the gap between beauty and fitness while prioritizing skin protection.”

–sweatcosmetics.com

They’re a pretty new-ish brand, and now they’re also available at Sephora. They’re all about mineral makeup that you can wear to the gym, or to go jogging, or if you do any other type of physical exercise and you want to look cute (well, cuter than usual). The line was created by a team of women Olympic soccer players ⚽ and professional athletes ? ⛸️?, which I think is awesome.

Their products are mineral-based, which means powder products, not liquid, and they focus on base products like foundation, bronzer and highlighter.

Everything is sheer-to-medium coverage, so they have a no-makeup makeup vibe. You can go to the gym, go to dance class, go to a soccer meet, whatever, and still look like you, just a little more polished. Oh! And they all have SPF.

The $42 face products come with a refillable makeup brush, which you load with one of the powders (they come in a small pot). Then you screw the powder into the base of the brush, tip it over, shake to dispense the powder through the brush bristles, and then apply to your face. There are also less expensive $24 refills available, too.

So…I don’t usually wear makeup when I work out because my biggest fear is that, ya know, I’ll be sweating, and sweaty beads of product will be dripping down my face onto my shirt and chin, because dude, I SWEAT LIKE A MOFO! I’m not one those delicate flowers who always looks perfectly dry and put together at the gym.

Nope!

But the dripping and the beading doesn’t happen with these products, yay! I wore the Mineral Foundation SPF 30 (it comes in five shades; I wear #300) and Glow Hard Bronzer to my HIIT class this morning, and my makeup looked fairly fresh and intact at the end.

MAC Make-Up Art Cosmetics Collection James Kaliardos Spring/Summer 2017: Easy, Edgy, Low-Key Eye Tutorial With Strategic Shimmer and Shine

January 25th, 2017 by Karen 12 Comments

Decked out in makeup from the MAC Make-Up Art Cosmetics collection James Kaliardos Spring/Summer 2017 (one of three sub-collections in a 50-piece launch)

Ever since I started doing different makeup looks for the #MBBInstachallenge, I dunno… Something cool happened. My mind has been opened to different ways to wear makeup, and not just in the traditional sense — like whether I’m going to wear a smoky eye or light color on the lid/darker color in the crease. I feel like I’m thinking outside the box a little more than I used to.

I love looks that are “traditionally pretty” (air quotes), and I have for years, but I feel like I’m more open to trying edgier looks now and wearing them in, like, everyday life.

I did a look today using products from the new MAC Make-Up Art Cosmetics Collection: James Kaliardos Spring/Summer 2017 (there’s some info about the launch, swatches and pics of some of the products down below if you’re interested), and, basically, this look is very much my current style. There are classical elements to it, but it also has an edgy twist.

I feel like I’m entering a new phase in my makeup life where I still like classic makeup or “traditionally pretty” (there are those air quotes again) makeup, but there’s also something unexpected or surprising about it.

Let me walk you through how I did the eyes because, really, that’s what this look is all about.

Start with your basic winged liner

I didn’t do anything fancy with the liner. It’s just a thin line along the top of my lashes with a flick at the end.

My lids, I kept simple and clean, but you could skip eyeshadow altogether. I used MAC Soba Eye Shadow (a MUST HAVE from the permanent line), my favorite satiny golden brown in the whole wide world, and applied that as a wash all over my entire lid, concentrating the color near the lash line.

It starts with a kitten flick and nude lips

Then, I took the Jumbo Rapidblack Penultimate Liner from MAC Make-Up Art Cosmetics James Kaliardos and dotted it between my lashes to create an illusion of a thicker lash line before drawing my wing using MAC Into the Well Eye Shadow in Midnight Tryst (a dark matte burgundy brown). It’s a powder eyeliner that you apply with a wet brush, and it’s really good when you want liner with a soft, diffused edge.

Incidentally, I’m wearing the MAC Full Face Kit: Moons of Saturn on my cheeks and MAC Lustre Lipstick in Almondine on my lips, both of which are also from the James Kaliardos sub-collection (there are also two other sub-collections in the MAC Make-Up Art Cosmetics collection. Together the three sub-collections comprise the 50-piece release, and each one is a collab with a different MAC makeup artist. In addition to this one by James Kaliardos, there’s one by Diane Kendal and one by Kabuki.

At this step, this is a look you could wear every day, right? It would be fab for running errands, going to school or going to work.

But let’s kick it up a notch! 🙂

Time to strategically place some sparkle and shine

I used two of the Pressed Pigments from the James Kaliardos collection to do this. First, I applied Light Touch, the light pinkish beige, and packed it into the inner corners of my eyes with a wet flat eyeshadow brush.

I wet the brush because I wanted to intensify the shine and make it VERY reflective.

Once that dried, I buffed out the edges with a tapered blending brush so that the pigment looked like it was concentrated in the inner corner. I wanted it to fade out as it moved up toward the inner part of my brow (I did my best to keep it out of the lid area).

Next, I dotted the darker pigment, deep shimmery grayish purple Black Grape, along the center of my lower lashes and purposefully left it messy, because I wanted it to look grungy and imperfect.

5 Things I’ve Been Loving Lately: Pai-Shau Hair Products, Grandpa Sweaters, Premier Protein, Tom Ford Spring 2017 and the Hourglass Girl Lip Stylos

January 25th, 2017 by Karen 16 Comments

tom ford spring 2017 visual
The Tom Ford Spring 2017 visual is BANANAS!

1. This pic for Tom Ford’s Spring 2017 campaign

This promo picture for the Tom Ford Spring 2017 collection (which is up on the website for pre-orders now), gah! This is everything! I mean, I don’t even know where to start. The glossy lids, the lashes, the brows, the subtle ombre lip — there is so much fabulousness wrapped up in this picture. I almost can’t take it!

2. Pai-Shau Shampoos and Conditioners

So, this line flew under my radar for a while. It was started in 2015 by the guy who founded Moroccan Oil, and their hook is tea. The products are on the pricey side, but I kinda like ’em. I’ve been using the Hydrating Ritual Replenishing Hair Cleanser ($26), Replenishing Cream Conditioner ($28) and Supreme Revitalizing Mask ($43) for the past three months, and my hair’s been looking pretty darned fly, if I do say so myself.

My favorite thing about them is how moisturizing they are! My hair tends toward dry because I color it and heat style, but this line doesn’t weigh me down. My hair stays bouncy and doesn’t feel heavy and coated with products.

These also don’t strip my color, and my ends have been looking healthier than they’ve looked in a really long time (no split ends).

pai-shau

Oh, and the fragrance reminds me of something you’d find over at Oribe. LOVE. They could probably pass for a subtle hair perfume. Ah… It’s like tea and white flowers.

3. Real pictures!

Do you ever get on picture kicks where you’re getting tons of them made? I love my iPhone, but nothing beats a picture you can actually hold in your hand or stick in a photo album.

A picture of pictures…

I just realized… I’ve taken at least one picture every day (usually a picture of Tabs or makeup or food) for the past 10 years.

That’s a whole decade!

But everything I do is digital, so I don’t have a lot of actual printed photographs lying around — something tangible that you can hold in your hand.

Anyway, I had a bunch of pics of Connor and Tabs printed at Costco over the holidays, and so now I’m hooked on that again. I made a bunch to send with cards, for frames and for the fridge.

The MAC Make-Up Art Cosmetics Collection: Diane Kendal Spring/Summer 2017

January 25th, 2017 by Karen 8 Comments

MAC Diane Kendal
Wearing shades from the MAC Creme Shadow X 6 in Glamorize Me palette, MAC Studio Conceal & Correct X 6: Cover Me, MAC Studio Quiktrick Stick/Diane Kendal in Radiance/Shadow and MAC Causal Colour Lip & Cheek Colour X 6: Enhance Me from the new MAC Make Up Art Cosmetics/Diane Kendal collection

DianeI wonder if Diane Kendal’s extensive backstage makeup experience influenced her part of the new MAC Make-Up Art Cosmetics collection, because backstage is HECTIC. It’s crazy, and they always seem to be running behind… So who knows? Maybe she wanted a collection of quick creams to get her models ready and onto the runway.

Well…at least, creams are quick in my experience. They’re faster to work with than powders. You can just dab them on, and use your fingers to blend them out. Even when I was doing this makeup, it went relatively quickly compared to doing an eye look with three or four different powders. I just used the creams from Kendal’s MAC Creme Shadow X 6 in Glamorize Me palette ($40), and it was so much faster to work with and blend than having to sit there and blend a whole bunch of powders.

MAC Make-Up Art Cosmetics Collection Diane Kendal

Diane Kendal is one of three makeup artists MAC tapped to do sub-collections for the 50-piece MAC Make-Up Art Cosmetics collection, which is available now. (The other two are James Kaliardos and Kabuki.) She’s a bad-@ss British makeup artist based out of New York, and before going to work for MAC, she helped develop products for Marc Jacobs and Calvin Klein Cosmetics. She’s been working in the biz since the ’80s. In this post we’ll be looking at Diane’s part in the story, and I’ve worked with eight of her 11 pieces in the launch.

There are A LOT of creams in this launch, which I find…I dunno. As I get older, I just like creams more. They’re easy to blend and don’t look as heavy and obvious and makeup-y as powders do. I’m into ’em. 🙂

So blendable! The $40 Glamorize Me Creme Shadow palette is my favorite thing in Diane’s launch. The glossy finish makes me swoon, but these shadows do scoot around quite a bit on my skin after a few hours… Be prepared because they’ll probably want to settle into the crease.

The satiny finish looks incredibly natural, and the creams are easy to blend on my cheeks AND my lips. They have pretty good wear time, too. I’m getting about five hours on my cheeks as a blush and about three hours on my lips. This is my second favorite thing in Diane’s part of the collection.

5 Things That Happen to You After You Get “Serious” About Makeup

January 23rd, 2017 by Karen 26 Comments

I can’t find my pan of MAC Soba. YES, THIS IS AN EMERGENCY!!!

1. You get caught up in the limited edition chase

Symptoms of this particular malady can last for months — in some cases (ahem!), years. Once stricken, you may find yourself doing things like going to a MAC counter at the crack of dawn (even before they’ve put out the collection for display) to snag a nude peachy pink lipstick, which you’ll eventually take home to comparison swatch against the other 20 LE nude peachy pink lipsticks in your stash.

Chances are, all of them will look more or less alike. (For what it’s worth, this is rarely a permanent affliction.)

2. You stare at brows

When you’re out and about, you’ll find yourself staring at other people’s brows and, if you’re next level, you’ll mentally file them away into one of several categories, like Instagram brows, Cara Delevingne brows, ombre brows, skinny brows and microbladed brows (among others).

There’s a whole language dedicated to describing brows, and you’ll know all of the terms. 🙂

3. You frequently ask yourself the hard questions like, “Do you reeeeeeeally need another neutral palette/coral lipstick/off-black liner?”

And even if you don’t, you can still easily justify adding another one to your collection.

4. You start coveting every shade of brown eyeshadow known to womankind

And if you happen to misplace a particular shade of satiny neutral golden brown (or whatever else it may be) that you need for your makeup on a given day, you’ll have a meltdown if you can’t find an exact dupe.

Seriously, forget about replacing it with another brown, because those other ones JUST WON’T WORK.

5. You get misty-eyed when you think of the one that got away…

You know — that one limited edition product that you wanted so badly but ended up not buying for whatever reason. Why didn’t you pick it up when you had the chance?? Were you out of your mind!?

This will haunt you for years…

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. I hope you had a great Monday, babe. Mine was pretty uneventful, which was fine with me. I needed a mellow day! The most exciting thing I did was make these two-ingredient pancakes for lunch (with two eggs and one ripe banana), and all I have to say is ewwwww.

I think I did something wrong because it tasted like a banana omelet.

Yeah, not doing that ever again. 🙂

How was your day?

January #mbbinstachallenge Look 3 (Week of Jan. 23-30): Smoky Taupe

January 23rd, 2017 by Karen 7 Comments

nars madly blush
Smoky taupe for this week’s #mbbinstachallenge

It’s week three of the #mbbinstachallenge! I was really excited about this one because it’s totally in my wheelhouse. The theme: smoky taupe.

Funny… When I was digging through my makeup drawers looking for makeup to use for this look, I grabbed a whole bunch of golden taupe powder eyeshadows that I thought might work with it, like Urban Decay Dark Horse and Secret Service. And Mushroom, in particular, was one I thought would totally work.

Oh, and I also tried this old MAC Starflash shadow called Smoke & Diamonds from 2009’s Love That Look collection, which is golden taupe perfection incarnate.

I tried all of them in various combos, but they just didn’t read quite like the inspiration picture below…

satiny taupe gray smoke
My inspiration for this week’s look

The gal in the picture has a hint of glossiness on her eyes, and I couldn’t get that same effect with those shimmery powder shadows I grabbed, so I ended up going with some cream shadows, like this one from Tom Ford called “Spring 2015” (yes, that’s its actual name, and I love it so much that I stocked up on it). It’s a fan-friggin-tastic dark golden taupe. And another TF shade called Platinum.

I used the dark golden taupe all over my lids, hit the outer V with dark matte brown MAC Brun (a powder eyeshadow), and then I smoked out the lower lash line and the edges with satiny golden brown MAC Soba.

So I did end up using some powder shadows for depth and to transition, but the glossy effect was thanks to the cream shadows.

New Urban Decay Vice Liquid Lipstick (Part 2): The Pink and Brown Shades

ME: Hey, there’s a shade in this line of liquid lipsticks I’m reviewing called “Brat.”

EL HUB: Did they name it after you?

ME: …

He may or may not have a point…

Ooh, yeah! There’s an Urban Decay Vice Liquid Lipstick shade called Brat. And I might be a brat; therefore, I will wear Brat, and I will be extra bratty, with a side of brat, when I wear it. 🙂

Round two of the UD Vice Liquid Lipstick swatches (here was round one: the red and orange shades)! These are the pinks, nudes and browns…and some funky brownish taupe business (see: Studded).

Just like the reds and oranges from the other day, these all look amaze-balls in pics. Even the metallics! I was so surprised. I had so much drama with the first metallic I tried from this line, golden orange Flame, which was basically a mess on my lips, but all of the metallics in this second batch are flawless. No vertical lip lines, patchiness, no drama.

I think Amulet looks particularly beautiful. I’m not normally a metallics person, either, but I’m totally into it.
