Take Your Look to the Next Level With 5 Makeup Tips From Bobbi Brown Manager of North American Artistry Marc Reagan

March 29th, 2013 by Karen 25 Comments

“As you can see, Karen’s not wearing any makeup at all…”

There I sat, feeling totally and completely naked and blinking wildly under the bright studio lights, as a layer of perspiration glistened on my forehead.

I’ve attended one-day makeup classes — sometimes called master classes — like this one before. Brand-sponsored classes usually held in large department stores. I really enjoyed the ones put on by MAC and Chanel, and yesterday’s, led by Bobbi Brown Manager of North American Artistry Marc Reagan, at the Saks Fifth Avenue in San Francisco, was just as interesting and fun.

It followed a similar set up. There’s a fee to attend, in this case $100 (my attendance fee was covered by the company), which is then redeemable toward the purchase of products at the end of the class.

Marc, a seasoned pro on Bobbi’s elite Beauty Team, has worked his magic on celebs and backstage at Fashion Weeks all over the world. At yesterday’s class, he demonstrated a bunch of different techniques and products on a model and answered questions while the attendees followed along, applying the techniques and trying the looks on themselves.

This time was a little different for me, though, um, because I was the model.

When I was asked, first thing I thought was, “FUN!” Second thing I thought was, “Oh, gawd! He’s going to have to take off all my makeup first! Holy sh*t!”

I’m the type of gal who applies concealer and gloss just to go get the mail outside, so I was a little nervous at first to be up there in front of the class without my “armor.”

But once I got used to it (as much as that’s possible), it was actually kind of liberating…akin to wearing a crazy cool shirt or something and just not giving a hoot.

The two-hour class was jam packed with tips. Marc did a two-phase makeup look on me, first walking the class through a natural, everyday look with the basics before cranking up the drama with more color, and between turning my head left and right at Marc’s direction, I typed a few notes on my phone.

1. Ramp up the wear time of your favorite Bobbi Brown foundations by layering them with one of Bobbi’s facial moisturizers

Ever notice that Bobbi’s line doesn’t include a face primer? It turns out, that’s because all of the brand’s facial moisturizers contain a primer in the formula.

So smart, right? Layering one of Bobbi’s facial moisturizers under your fave foundation not only helps to hydrate and protect your skin, but it also extends the wear time of the products you apply next.

2. Keep two brushes on standby to apply under-eye concealer

When applying under-eye concealer, Marc recommends first applying with a flat brush before using your ring finger to pat and blend in the edges. The flat brush places the concealer where you want it on your skin, as opposed to just pushing it around.

Then, to set your concealer and ensure that it lasts through the day, fully load a tapered fluffy brush with plenty of powder (don’t be shy!), and gently pat that on top.

3. Bring a Bobbi Brown Foundation Stick with you in your makeup bag

Does Marc have a go-to Bobbi Brown product? As a matter of fact, he does! Bobbi Brown’s Foundation Sticks, and he says, “every woman needs one in her makeup bag.”

With the sticks, which Marc says always look natural and never heavy or cakey, you can build them up for heavier coverage, or sheer them out wherever you need less. You can also wear them alone or set them with a powder, and if you want to touch-up during the day, the Foundation Sticks even layer well atop powder.

Unsung Makeup Heroes: Urban Decay Baked and Midnight Cowboy Glitter Eyeliners

March 29th, 2013 by Karen 25 Comments

Urban Decay's Baked and Urban Cowboy Glitter Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliners
Glitter lover says what? That’s Urban Decay’s Baked and Urban Cowboy Glitter Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliners ($18 each) along my upper and lower lash lines

Happy, HAPPY Friday, my friend.

Right before I opened my eyes this morning, when I was still lying in bed, the mental fog started to clear, and I smiled. 🙂

It’s Friday! We made it through another week.

Sorry about not being around much the past couple of days. This week kind of kicked my butt. Nothing huge, but it seemed like every day one new, unexpected thing came up to throw me off my regular routine.

I’m a creature of habit, and sometimes all it takes is one extra hour I have to spend on something I didn’t plan for, and I’m a mess after that. It’s hard to get back on track.

Oh! Remember the Bobbi Brown Master Class I mentioned a couple weeks back? It was yesterday in SF, and I went. I’m putting together a post with the tips I picked up, but it’s not quite ready yet. For now, though, here’s a sneaky peaky…

Observe my terrified expression, haha! I was asked to be the class model, and it was…an experience. Really fun, but I completely underestimated how hard it would be to NOT make any funny faces for two hours.

In other news, Urban Decay’s 24/7 Heavy Metal Glitter Liners in Baked and Urban Cowboy.

You might be thinking, “Um…but I thought the only people who could get away with glitter were gymnasts and figure skaters? And I’m neither.”

Wait now! Come back here. Don’t run away just yet. Contrary to popular belief, gymnasts, figure skaters and Honey Boo Boo are not the only people who can pull off glitter. We can do it, too, and with Urban Decay’s gold and bronze glitter liners, we can look sassy and age-appropriate.

These long-lasting, clear liquid liners are filled with flecks of glitter so small that a Smurf could wear ’em.

What I’ll usually do with these is draw a thin line along my upper or lower lash lines with the skinny brush (although for these pics, I’ve lined both my upper and lowers for emphasis), curl my lashes, and then coat them with mascara.

When I look in the mirror, it’s hard to even discern this glitter from more than a few feet away. All I see is a pair of bright, sparkling eyes!

Affordable and stylish spring and summer beauty from Sonia K.

Kitty overlord got a taste for the finer things? Is he/she hooked on products with high-end prices?

With Tabs, been there, done that.

But ya know what? This spring and summer, refreshing your makeup bag (or your feline employer’s) doesn’t have to empty your Kate Spade wallet.

Not with my girl, Sonia Kashuk, swooping in to save the day. 🙂

Sonia Kahsuk Spring Summer 2013 all

Whether you’re saving up for a toy or trip, or just tightening up your beauty budget, get haute couture for less with Sonia Kashuk’s new spring and summer 2013 makeup.

With a packaging revamp across her permanent line, there’s excitement in the air! Say so long (at least for now) to Sonia’s signature white and silver compacts, because they’ve been replaced by new black and white cases.

Of course, you’ll still be able to find your favorite product shades, as well as some new ones, too.

On the limited-edition side, we head to Morocco!

Or rather, Sonia did, and it influenced her spring and summer makeup, bags and tools.

It’s a HUGE collection this year (available now at Target, in stores and online), and here are some of the pieces that have caught my eye…

Eye liner mania! I haz it!

— WARNING —

You may want to avert your eyes.

— WARNING —

Urban Decay’s recently relaunched collection of long-wearing, waterproof 24/7 Glide-On Pencils has been known to drive makeup lovers bat-sh*t crazy (in the best possible way).

The brand recently added 13 new shades and 14 previously released limited edition colors to their permanent line, bumping up the total number of available shades to 40.

40!

Heck, on most days I’m lucky if I can decide between Perversion and Bourbon. Forget being able to decide among 40 shades.

March 27th, 2013 by Karen 36 Comments

A Too Faced Cosmetics Makeup Breakdown
My new fave makeup look…

Hello and welcome to the hump! I’ve been awake since the crack of dawn because your nephew has figured out a new way to annoy me.

A good 30 minutes before my alarm’s supposed to go off, he claws at the side of the mattress so that I’ll wake up and feed him the gravy he so richly deserves.

Feel my wrath, woman

Tabs isn’t exactly a kitty rocket scientist, but when it comes to food, the gears in his tiny brain churn just enough for him to put two and two together. Ah, the joys of pet assisting a plus-size diva super star…

Needless to say, I’m feeling like I need an extra jump start to go along with the coffee this morning, so I’m thinking about re-creating the same look I wore in the Too Faced Better Than False Lashes post from the beginning of the week. BECCA Belle Époque Ultimate Crème Eyeliner Keeps a Lined Eye on the Future With a Purple Nod to the Past

March 26th, 2013 by Karen 13 Comments

BECCA Belle Epoque Ultimate Creme Eyeliner
Wearing BECCA’s new Belle Époque Ultimate Crème Eyeliner ($20 for a 0.08-ounce jar), one of four completely brand-spankin’ new Crème Eyeliners recently added to BECCA’s permanent collection

I’ll be the first to admit it because it’s totally true. When it comes to purple eye liner, I’m the star of my own personal snooze-fest.

It happens sometimes after 25 or 26 years… That’s how long I’ve been wearing purple eye liner (since about 1987).

I started by sneaking a rogue stick of purple Lancôme liner out of the house with me every day and lining my upper lash lines with it when I got to school (so sneaky!).

Admittedly, I had no idea what I was doing, so I probably looked like Honey Boo Boo on a bad pageant day, but I didn’t care. I loved the stuff. Still do.

So predictable, I know. 🙂 But you know what? Purple liner does great things for brown, green and hazel eyes.

I’ve always loved the look and felt that brown eyes (mine are brown) look so much more chocolatey and delicious when they’re lined with plum.

Lately, the purple liner love o’ my life has been BECCA’s new teeny, tiny jar of Belle Époque (a shout-out to France’s “Beautiful Era,” I presume), a deep, shimmery eggplant cream liner that draws feathery strokes in a single sweep and has a formula that lasts all day long.

A Peachy Pick For Improv Spring Picnics or Any Time You’re in a Rush: Jouer Honeysuckle Tint Quickly Blossoms on Cheeks and Lips

March 26th, 2013 by Karen 12 Comments

Jouer Honeysuckle Tint
It’s picnic time with Jouer’s new Honeysuckle Tint on my cheeks and lips! — part of the new spring 2013 collection available now online and at Jouer counters inside Nordstrom and Henri Bendel stores

My favorite part of last weekend? When El Hub knocked on my office door to invite me on an impromptu picnic.

Mind you, the picnic itself was great, but immediately before El Hub knocked on my door, I was feeling a little blue… The picnic was a perfect opportunity to not only spend some quality time with him but also with Honeysuckle, a new spring shade in Jouer’s line of $20 multitasking cream Tints for cheeks and lips.

Naturally, a picnic with your sweetie is infinitely better when you’re wearing peach blush and lipstick to go with your sandwiches, chips and lemonade.

Pretty in peach

I was crunching numbers (taxes, bluh) when I heard a tap-tap-tapping on my door…

One look at my sad face and bleary eyes told El Hub all he needed to know.

“You wanna go on a picnic?” he said, stepping over Tabs, who was sprawled in front of the doorway like a 20-pound kitty gatekeeper. “You, me, sandwiches from Whole Foods and a nice patch of grass? Come on, let’s go. Can you be ready in five minutes?”

He handed me a glass of water he was holding and an allergy pill. “Here, take this, Bubble Girl.”

This time of year, I’m allergic to everything, so I chugged it down. He grabbed the glass and turned to leave.

“Five minutes isn’t enough,” I said after him.

He bounded down the stairs and hollered back, “Now it’s only four minutes!”

Sh*t. Four minutes?? I kicked into fast-and-furious makeup overdrive, rubbing a few dots of tinted moisturizer on my cheeks and chin, patting concealer under my eyes, brushing a bit of eye shadow into my brows and curling my lashes.

A minute left on the clock, but I felt like something was still missing…

I looked around the room and noticed Tabs rolling on his back, blinking with sleepy eyes. My pan of Jouer Honeysuckle was half buried beneath his tum.

Large and in charge…and hiding makeup wherever he goes!

Seriously, dude. I will never understand how or why this cat enjoys stealing and sleeping on makeup. It’s just the weirdest thing. I guess it’s good that Jouer housed the 0.07-ounce pan of Honeysuckle in a sturdy brown compact, because not only can it withstand jostling around in my makeup bag, it can also withstand the power of a portly XXXL tabby.

After liberating the compact from Tabs’ voluptuous girth, I pried it open with my fingers, and swept and blended Honeysuckle’s sheer, lightweight cream formula on my cheeks and lips.

Purrfect. The semi-matte peach was exactly the kind of casual color I needed for an improv picnic and the rest of the day after, since it lasts 5-6 hours on my dry cheeks, and about an hour on my lips.

A Cure for Sallow Skin: Physicians Formula Sexy Booster Sexy Glow Bronzer

March 26th, 2013 by Karen 19 Comments

Physicians Formula's Sexy Booster Sexy Glow Bronzer in Bronzer
The $13.95 Physicians Formula Sexy Booster Sexy Glow Bronzer in Bronzer (also available in a second version called Light Bronzer), available now at drugstores and online

In an ominous dream I had the other night, Olympic Skater Johnny Weir warned me that I was making a big mistake…

In the dream he told me two things — 1) that I didn’t have enough sequins in my wardrobe and 2) that I wasn’t wearing bronzer often enough.

I had to agree with him about the bling…

By nature, I love to sparkle. So I’m totally on board with that.

But about Johnny’s second bit of advice, I hrrumphed!

“Duuuuude,” I screamed from my dream seat next to the rink, “I wear bronzer a lot. Like all the time!”

He landed a triple axle and yelled from across the ice, “Don’t lie. I saw you at Kate Spade yesterday, and you looked tow’ up. What you need is a good golden tan bronzer. The warm, healthy glow could do you some good.”

Then he skated up to me, pulled the white scrunchie I was wearing from my hair (I never figured out why), and skated off until he disappeared into a hot pink fog…

(Yeah, I really have to stop eating those rice crispy treats before bed.)

This was one of those dreams I initially forgot about but remembered later in the day.

It was Saturday, warm and sunny outside, but I was feeling pretty crummy about being stuck indoors doing my taxes. At the time I was wearing my rattiest pajamas with a scrunchie in my hair (yes, it was white) and didn’t have on a lick of makeup.

I’d just glanced over at my pan of Physicians Formula Sexy Booster Sexy Glow Bronzer sitting on my desk when the dream occurred to me and I blurted, “Johnny Weir!”

The golden bronzer is part of a new spring collection of products designed to increase yo’ sex appeal.
